  • Wow. All I can say is WOW. But I can also say that I am still not a big fan of pinot. Pinot Champagne yes but pinot noir? No. Sorry. Maybe I'm not spending enough money to find a good one.

QOTD. Maybe Monte Antico Rosso or maybe a nice Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Although Gary mention ribs so probably Gratien & Meyer Saumur Rose Brut. Rose Chanpagne and ribs is awesome.

  • I like the Cline Viognier or even Kathy's Cuvee by Rosenblum. Both very good and won't break the bank.

  • Randall

QOTD: Schramsberg Rose Bubs and then some El Toro 'Poppy Jasper' with the BBQ'ed ribs…

  • I understand your point but I like to see wine from different angles. The vineyard owner, to the producer, seller and so on. I don't like 3 days in a row of the same type of person but I like to see GV mixed it up.

And yes mgmann…Gary does the squirmy worm sometimes. πŸ˜‰

  • laposte

Oh for the 4th it has to be Chablis with oysters.
but what will we have for 07.01.2010? Think Canada…

  • QOTD – As the fourth is a celebration, I am thinking that one of my J Vineyard Brut Magnums will have to be brought out, probably the 2000. Nothing like a big bottle for a little fun.

    Love the back to basics!

  • ONUMello

FWIW, I really enjoyed this episode- perfect length, entertaining, & shared some great knowledge!
QOTD: My mother in law is interested in trying a real zinfandel as opposed to just white- I can't wait to teach her!

  • Gary, can you clarify why you give the Montille Nuits St Georges Aux Thorey a major pass, but then give a score of 87? I was thinking 87 is a “good” wine?

  • good episode, still liking this format
QOTD: going to be in the UK so hopefully will have some good wine at a nice restaurant there hah

  • orangebottle

QOTD: Sangria with ice for a very hot 4th.

  • Iowa State University representing CKC!

QOTD: I'm away from home for internship, so I'll be sharing a prosecco with some new friends. Never had prosecco, and excited about trying that!

  • Emins

Great show! I've been watching since February or so and the Lurker Guilt is getting too much to bear. So I had to make my first comment. Also wanted to mention that I was introduced to your show in my wine class at Purdue and have been watching ever since.

As for the show format, I really like both guest and non-guest episodes, though some guests weren't bringing the thunder.

QOTD: I had a dream last night that I was at a wine tasting – which was awesome but then went downhill when they wouldn't let me taste the Pinot Noir. So Pinot is probably what I'll have, though Beaujolais has been on my wine to-do list for too long!

  • LLUErker

Yeah, it WAS Mortal Kombat with the little outburst there. Though, it was actually “toasty!” Interesting show, I'm somewhat intrigued by the idea of the half-bottle, which would allow for more tasting for less of an overall investment. For a not-so-well-off person like myself, that's pretty important.

QOTD – I picked up a couple of Cavas I found at the store, so I'm pretty excited about that. I tasted one and it wasn't bad, so I'm curious and excited to taste more on the 4th. Unfortunately(or fortunately, I don't know), I'll be in mixed company, so I'll have to chill it beforehand. Should be good, though.

  • LLUErker

“Good” is all relative. Like, he tears some wines down like it's nobody's business, then gives them 80-85. Also, even at 87, his pass/recommend decisions are made with price in mind as well. And, at 55 bones, that feels like a pretty major pass.

  • Don Simpson

Gary – I love the energy today! You brought it back to the old school and it did not disappoint, great show!!! It was interesting to learn about this part of Burgundy.

QOTD: I will be in Napa and Sonoma July 1-6 for a good friend's wedding. I would appreciate if the Vayniacs leave me some comments with recommendations of wineries to visit! The wedding is at V Sattui but I'd like to check out a bunch of wineries in both Napa and Sonoma.

ps: Toy Story 3 was absolutely incredible, you need to go see it. Best Pixar movie so far, in my opinion…

  • Fun show. I'm a big pinot fan, especially burgundies, even though i think burgs are the biggest crapshoot when it comes to whether or not the wine's going to be good.

QOTD: It's my birthday on the 3rd so I'm throwing a wine get together at my usual hangout in town. Haven't decided what I'm going to open but I may go Burgundy with the 02 Mommessin Clos de Tart. I had it before and enjoyed it and would like some people who weren't there when I opened the last bottle to stick their nose into it too. But, I also kinda want to try something new. I wish the store had a better white selection, cause I'd totally dive into some white burgundy. A friend is opening the 05 Rubicon Rubicon which I had with him once before and it totally knocked my socks off and surprised me (I expected it to be average), so I'm looking forward to seeing if it holds up.

QOTD: I have a bottle of 2007 Savennieres (Domaine du Closel – Chateau des Vaults: La Jalousie) that I'm saving for a special dinner this weekend with the girlfriend. Love the chenin.

  • Michael Shaw

Learn something every time I watch – thanks. Any Washington wine shows in the future

  • Yes! I love the back-to-basics shows!!! Tight, focused and educational. Keep 'em coming, GV. I love Pinot Noir but tend to shy away from Burgundy (a crap shoot as someone else stated below).

QOTD: Domaine Vieux Telegraphe CDP Blanc 2007.. (hope it's as good as I've been told) and Domaine Carneros (by Taittinger) my fav bubbly under $20..

  • “Does he hate the Jets,” asked my 9 year old sister. “No,” I replied “but why do you ask?” She responded, “because he's spitting in their helmet.” This is interesting to me. That's all. Other than that, thanks for shouting out to CKC, I appreciate it. Gato Negro Merlot and Sutter Home Red are two wines that I'll be drinking for a while….luckily I can deal with that.

  • castello

    represent Ernie! Welcome,, Chenin Blanc!

  • castello

We will not allow you to get sober sir

  • castello

V Sattui is in the heart! A little touristy but enjoy. The money they made there they reinvested at Castello di Amorosa, north of there. They built a Big ass Castello(Castle). Their Merlot is to die for. The Cab is also awsome along with some good whites and desert wines.
The Merlot is the best buy at 36 or so.
Yes the 2001 is the inspiration for my handle.

  • $68 for 90 points?!? Major pazz with 37 million Zs

Pop and pour if you can!

  • castello

RU Puerto Rican? What will you wear?

  • Thats was really back to basic and some newbie hint's, good for attracting new audience.
    Only to 927?
QOTD: I got hold of some white Crozes-Hermitages that I would love to share with friends a nice summer day soon.

  • Imueller

qotd: I might have the inside track on getting some sardines (hard to get in Colorado)to grill up over the weekend and i'm pumped to try them with a vinho verde and an albarino i have. I think it's a pairing that my friends will like but have never had.

  • Mark McNabb

Nuits St George is a beautiful town. Great show Gary. QOTD: Maybe 2004 Rafanelli Zin.

  • Mark McNabb

I am in the CKC!! Haha.

  • This Is Radio Freedom

Molodets! I tasted the wines through you and I really feel great. Little tipsy. Just kidding, that's the weed i just pakuril. That was a great episode. I am a cosmonaut and can't drink now. So it was really joyous to watch, see and hear you taste it. Bood'i zdorov!!!

  • jason carey

I thought Montille's wines are really made to be drank after 10 years or so.. It may be closed down right now..

  • ilbee

Gotta get more into red Burgundy. Somehow it's just so much easier (and cheaper) to get something like a Zweigelt or a new world Pinot when you're looking for a light red to go with food.

QOTD: gonna be a pretty normal Sunday outside the U.S. I guess, maybe I'm not in the demographic for this question…

  • RichieHell

QOTD: My mom got an interessting Chateauneuf du Pape for her birthday a few years ago. I swiped it because she would have poped it like two weeks later and it would have been way to young. I'm looking forward to getting it back and having it with my mom.

  • Allan

    Gary's in a good mood πŸ™‚

Good show, but what a shame…… and popping those '06's was just wrong! They are all babies…

I need to explore Burgundy more…… Any Vayniacs out there have any recommendations?

Qotd: I'm not an American, but will post if i taste somethin' nice!!! πŸ™‚

    Cheers!

  • Allan

“What's the use of gettin' sober, if you're gonna get drunk again…..”

  • Question of the day, I am happy to share red table wines from the Douro region of Portugal. I am really enjoying the vinho verde wines and have been sharing them with everyone that I can.

  • zanne_70

QOTD: in London with friends for the 4th but will be popping crΓ©mant from Chateau du Petit Thouars.

Great show Gary – would like to see you get even more of your nerd on!

  • Rita

Great episode Gary! I am a big fan of Burgundy wines and was waiting for your review for some of their wines. Was the first one you tasted (Daniel Rion) a “Village? or it was a 1st cru? I also believe the second one is from Volnay, right? From my trips to this area I learned that wines from there are somewhat lighter than other areas ( Gevrey Chambertin, or Chambolle Musigny etc.). Will try to find the 3rd one you?ve tasted ( I am not in US) ? liked your description. Would also love to see you taste some Burgundy whites, like the Chablis and the Montrachet wines… Regards

  • Yaniv

QOTD: I'm not an American but on our independence day (the Israeli) I popped an israeli cab from a small boutique winery named “Amram”.

  • QOTD: I am trying to come up with a wine pairing to go with a carrot cake w/ cream cheese frosting. Celebrating a friends birthday and making her that cake… the frosting is sweet so I am thinking of going for something light with a good minerality.

  • loved the price-is-right reference, probably went over most of the viewer's heads….you probably learned how to say “Showcase Showdown” before “Mom” πŸ˜‰
