line of the day – ‘It’s like smelling Batman…dark’

Great show, absolute classic. Mott back to his psychophantic best – after saying he smells a heavy dose of barnyard GV says it’s not there, try it again. Mott caves in – ‘it’s disappeared’

Great to see GV so pumped for a show, His enthusiasm is contagious. Capped all by the hilarious ‘hair on chest’ moment at 4.20

    GARY!!!

    Well… Ive adored a lot of Nebbiolo..No, never had Freisa D'asti ..
Like smelling Batman? LOLOL (I refer to Glen.as Batman..just sayn)

QOTD: GINO! <-buddy from AZ, I found an Italian in the desert! LOL He's 82, grows his own veggies…has dirt shipped to him! LOL He's all about his dirt.. He gardens, listens to jazz music, cooks…and has amazing never-ending stories about the world as it was.. He's spiritual -fighting cancer & says if he loses, he still won… <3

Gary..you look great. What is it? Your hair is at a good length too… Whatever it is, it looks good on you.

    qotd 1. NO
qotd 2. My folks. Even though they are in their 70's and I am married and a father of 2 great kids, they won't hesitate to smack me upside the head if they think I deserve it. My mom still won't hold back from using the wooden spoon, either… you know what I'm talking about!

  • lawrenceleichtman

Definitely on a roll these last two episodes with new wines and I have never had a Freisa in my life and I pride myself on tasting a lot of different wines. At under 20 bones for both of these why not?

  • NorCalKing

    SQOTD: Never had it.

QOTD: Still living? Maybe Joe Salvador. He used to teach vocational school. One day a student setting in his car gave him some lip and Joe walked over and ripped him out through the driver's window. Classic.

Your dad's right up there though.

  • latticus

Prolific lurker Loved the show! This is why I watch.
QOTD 1 No, I have never heard of or tried Freisa D'asti

My 16 month old twins Miles & Madeleine are also fans of the show. They dance and smile whenever they hear the opening to WLTV. Keep doing what you do.

  • guymandude

    That was a great show!

    qotd; heard of ,never had.

  • Hello Gary,
I have been really enjoying your book.
I say enjoying because I read a bit, apply your advice, and then continue.
You are obviously a very amiable guy and I wish you all the greatest success (and the Jets team).

    Best,
    Miles Branman

PS. My passion is cars. Not too original, but like you, I a fairly competent with video.
When things really start to cook with MilesPerHour, I will shoot you another comment.

  • First QOTD: Never tried a Freisa.
Second QOTD: A professor in college who could be summed up in one word: “Francophile.”

  • “I feel like clubbing a gal, pulling her by the hair and sharing a meal with this wine.” -GV

    HAlarious!

Another great episode. I love the solo, love the guests, love them all.

QOTD: My dad. Can't pull up an internet browser.

    Side QOTD: N

  • orangebottle

thank you for the show Gary. you are bringing something new to the table that opened my eyes again. this episode is a signature WLTV.
Qotd: a Freisa what? i'm not in that five.

  • LLUErker

Side QOTD – I've never had it.
QOTD – My uncle Reggie. He grew up in the Philippines and he refuses to buy a lot of produce and meats at the supermarket, because he believes that the sellers have switched them with things he considers undesirable. For example, he won't buy pork because he believes that they were switched with cat meat, because that's evidently the kind of thing they used to do in the markets in the Philippines. Or at least, so he says.

Disclosure: I am the importer for Cascina Gilli. The bottle you tried has been in port for less than 3 weeks and may still be showing some signs of bottle shock. It was fermented in stainless steel and aged in a combination of concrete and stainless steel vats. As the bottle shock wears off the wine will show much more refinement and depth. I love the enthusiasm for trying something different!

  • Brunellofello

What can I say Gary, one the best shows in a while. You certainly had your A-game on, but the wines were the stars of the show today. QOTD: I had never heard of fresia until today. QOTD2: I think of a man we met on the streets of Rome who started talking to us in Italian. His daughter was with him and said he was welcoming us to Italy. What was so old timey about him was that he said he was 90 and that he had worn a suit, tie, and hat everyday since he was 18.

  • JeffR

No – Have I ever had a freisa.

QTD – Dad … one word he constantly uses … “photostat”.

    Nice episode.

  • finest

Long time lurker, so not sure if I count, but I have had a freisa. I saw it on the shelf of a local store a month or two ago and had never heard of it, so gave it a shot. Can't remember who the producer was.

  • QOTD: Never tried it, but just ordered some of the 2007 Nidoleres La Raphaelle 🙂

Great ep, can't believe WLTV is almost at 900!

  • I had a St-Chinian too…it was pretty intriguing.

  • “I cut down trees, I eat my lunch, I go to the lavatory…” Two lumberjacks, Batman, Flintstones…hilarity. Loved to see a great performance by the Roussillon.

Side QOTD: Never had, never heard.

QOTD: No one off the top of my head. I had a REALLY old Micro professor. We of course made the “he knew Napoleon” jokes. Had very much an ol' school Brit-mentality about him.

“this is smack you in the face if you get out of hand 1963 at sears.” best line ever.

i'm really excited about trying / finding these wines. sounds like they'll be great for my palate.

QOTD: My godmother / great aunt, Sicilian to the bone, went to Mass every day, amazing cook, hand made ravioli, simple, perfect cannolis, grew tomatoes in her yard, poured me little glasses of wine cut with water for dinner when I was 8… I miss her.

  • WineWoman

Side question: Believe it or not, “NO”.
QOTD: My Boss. But only in lack of media knowledge, computer-illiteracy–but a very intelligent, talented guy, very fashionable and health-conscious. My husband is also a little old-school regarding fashion trends, but maintains a high-level of respect and manners and going into the 4th of July weekend, it might be just “patriotic” but he makes an attempt to buy American. Many of these admirable qualities have been lost by many throughout the years.(Is that “God Bless America” I hear playing in the background?)

  • WineWoman

It's about time for his annual “crew-cut”…..

One of my favorite episodes yet! Side question . . . never heard of Freisa d'Asti but just ordered three bottles (and three bottles of the Raphaelle!). QOTD: has to be my late father-in-law, Tony. A great guy!!

  • waynooo daaa wino

Yo Bro, Had some Curtis Winery White Rhone Blend!! Pretty Goooooood !! Hope Ya doin’ Greeeaaat !!!! Time for me ta Craaassshh……. ;o)

  • Darlene O.

Great show, Gary! QOD: Has to be my Dad, who is now gone, but was from Slovenia in Yugoslavia. His Papa had a cellar, made his own wine…

  • ahillsey

I'm just sayin….LOVED IT. Jeffrey Wolfe is old skool, wine shoppe owner that bleeds terroir.

  • jeffsjeff

Yes, GV, you are most definitely on a roll. I left a comment last week when I was frustrated with the guest situation, now here's my comment THANKING YOU for three excellent shows in a row. Just you and Mott and a few bottles of wine is all WLTV needs. THEN, when you bring on a guest, it's special and educational, not pompous and promotional. Speaking of amazing guests, how about some Sasha!?

    mini QOTD: Never had either.
QOTD: A journalism professor I had three years ago who forced us to lay out newspaper pages by hand using rulers and #2 pencils despite the school paying for $1200/license software to do just that. Old schoooooooool…

  • John D.

Love it G! 2 for 2 baby. Both sound right up my alley.

QOTD: My Grandfather. A farmer who raised beef cattle, ran his own lumber mill, always wears flannel, punched a guy out for calling him 'buddy' at a bar, eats Meat & potatoes every night and listens to Big Band music. Old school doesn't begin to describe him.

  • Joe

My gosh Gary, can't you at least learn how to pronounce the veriaty name before the show? It's FRAY-ZAH not FRES-YA.

  • Gary, you are awesome. I'm sort of a lurker but I'm coming out of the woodwork to answer this one!

QOTD: My 80-year-old Jewish grandfather, papa Burt. Owned a clothing store on State Street in Chicago in the 60's, collected cufflinks, and always tells me to sit down and eat something (even if I adamantly tell him I'm not hungry). He told me once that sometimes he and his buddies go to car dealerships to see how low they can haggle expensive cars down, just for fun. Haha, classic.

  • jlilley

QOTH: My buddy Carlo's dad. Old school Italian, made his own wine and grappa in the garage. Man that was some rough stuff… especially the grappa!

  • Good show!!!!!!!!!

No, never tried a Freisa.. Not sure if I want to. Need more information. 🙂

  • John Rogers

Great show keep it up and yes, you are on a roll. I could also tell by listening to you (really enjoying it). I don't think I will find those wines here but will look anyway.

QOTD: 1. never 2. Knew a guy that took people out horseback riding in Idaho. Didn't talk alot except when he had too but a very tough capable man.

  • Stan

    Gary,
Great episode, loved it when you kicked back and drank some of the Roussillon; that tells me you really liked it. Old world is coming back with a vengeance. I have never had a Freisa, will have to search one out. Being on the West coast in a remote area, I am limited as to who comes out to deliver wine. Will have to travel to find it. I have a customer named John who will not buy anything unless it has some “Dirt” in it. Love this guy and enjoy finding the right wine for him. Keep it up Gary, you are on the mark.

I am in the middle of a WLTV marathon, catching up on about six episodes and Gary, your continual attack on those who don't comment has lead me to the site today. Keep up the thunder.

    Jesse from Korea.

  • Good info jeff. Is it a young wine nonetheless?

  • hair on the chest, flinstone wine, that's hilarious..and true. Great comments! It be fantastic if I could get sort of a “energy/knowledge transplant” from you Gary.

Following you from the Netherlands, and will keep on doing so. Great work!

“It's so dark… it's like smelling Batman”. My favourite web quote this week! Thanks Gary.

  • scottEJ

Excellent content, G. I don't even think I can find a Friesa locally, and I live in Chi.

QOTD: My Grandpa (rest his soul). I only ever saw him in coveralls and an old, dirty baseball cap. Dude was a farmer and the sole supplier of produce for an entire county. He literally lived off the land and fed others while doing so. Always had a mouthful of chaw tobacco and from what I gather, made his own booze in the woods. Wasn't much on dental hygene due to looks of those missing teeth and probably bathed once (maybe twice) a week to conserve water. And, a person who I can honestly say died from a broken heart when my Grandma passed – he passed one month later after being married for 60+ years (probably longer as the records were a little hazy at the end) having known each other ALL of their lives.

  • tripp

QOTD 1. yes, just last month in Rome, Italy. There is a woman who is crazy about Italian wines and offers guided tastings (our best experience in the eternal city, btw. Is called vinoroma.com) One of the wines we tasted was 2003 vintage of this Freisa you have in the show and it blew our minds.

  • OldForester

Das-whaat-I'm-talk'n-abawt! Excellent; as has been the recent bunch of “classic” shows. No one can do what you do in this “Gary and some bottles” format. I'm beginning to think that any time spent with interviews and visits to pubs is a big waste of talent. …Keep the “classics” coming!

  • Marcusr34

    WOW-ODD
my Local wine merchant (LCBO/Vintages) describes this totally differently:

CASCINA GILLI VIGNA DEL FORNO FREISA D'ASTI 2007

Vini Buoni d'Italia 2010 bestowed one of its highest honours – a Golden Star – upon this wine. The Italian wine bible, Gambero Rosso (2010), also heaped high praise upon Cascina Gilli's Vigna del Forno Freisa d'Asti 2007, awarding it a score of Two Glasses (out of 3). This crisp and fresh wine exhibits a light but lingering effervescence – think slightly sparkling in temperament – and delivers lovely fresh scents of raspberrry and spring blossoms. An ideal match for antipasti and charcuterie.

  • CharlieTN

QOTD: One of my friends from college was from Florence. She was mega old world. Put everyone else to shame in the sophistication department. Kinda like Mott.
