lines of the day – ‘did you see my hair on that episode, spike city USA’ and talking about when customers used to disregard GV in the shop because they thought he was too young, ‘I used to systematically blueprint on how to humble them’

Classic the line of the day; would love to have been a fly on the wall when those pain-in-the-ass clients got their come-uppance

  • Welcome back, Gary!
    Super-excited to watch this.
It was a week off and it feels like a month+.
Hope all is well in your business life.

  • Love the Jadot Pouilly Fuisse! It's a favorite of our customers and so classic White Burgundy! THe Jaboulet Parallel 45 is wonderful and a personal favorite of mine in the “everyday” wine category. Wait til it opens up a bit Gary YUMMY!!

  • AllanJonassen

If you ever see a 1978 La Chapelle buy it!!! Will change your life!!! maybe???

Great idea for the shows this week!

SQOTD: I'm not a CKC anymore, but I know that St Paul Tech has a wine professional certificate program. I've always wanted to attend, but spending the $$ there is a lower priority.

QOTD: My wife and I really enjoy the Ste Michelle Riesling for the price point.

  • AllanJonassen

Let's just face the facts… This wasn't worth the wait!

I would never ever buy any of these wines sorry, bad mood hittin'…

I can find a boatload!!!!! of great QPR under 20, that's what i will spend on a bottle……

Qotd: Tio Pepe Sherry, get my boat rockin' at the moment.

Rock on GV, let the good things come………………..

  • Zinopece

    QOTD: Penfolds Koonunga Hill

  • castello

Louis Martini Cabernet Sav from Sonoma or Napa. Now owned by Gallo but good for 15 to 20 bones.

  • NY Pete

  • drt999

I haven't seen the Kreusch here, but have seen the other two

QOTD Sometimes, I just gotta have Riunite with my pizza

  • Live show? And we missed it? πŸ™‚

For cheap wines – the big thing is whether or not it's offensive. For cheap wine, simplicity isn't always a bad thing.

  • drt999

    Shocking!

  • Randall

QOTD: I know I keep yammering about Trader Joe's, and I DO APPRECIATE the leeway to do that on your vlog, Gary, but I think I have to say their wines (made by ASV in San Martin) are usually WAY better than their prices would suggest. I'm glad they get a decent distribution. I like to think I have pretty fair tastes, but not the best bank account, so I really dig Cindy, TJ's and things of that ilk…

  • What are the odds?! Was going home and search for the Parallel 45 which I just brought home and lo and behold, it's on today's episode! Tasting some along with the episode and I have to agree with you GV, for the price, there's a lotta flavor goin' on!

QOTD #1: Graduated last year (advertising design & print) and I'm not sure there were any wine clubs/groups but I definitely knew of a few beer drinking crews that got together and got together often.

QOTD #2: My go-to supermarket wine is either the Pillar Box Red or Root:1 Cabernet. Good stuff, all around 10-12 bucks.

    Good show, sir!

  • Wow, what a great show and looking forward to the entire week. I love it when you “slum it.” Oh, and #19, please, it has to be Johnny U, he “owns” #19!!!

And yes, your hair during the first Jadot review. It was hilarious. I remember it well. πŸ™‚

QOTD (Main) since I'm not a CKC: Hmm, how about plain old Mondavi Woodbridge Cab. I remember buying a case when I was a CKC at 4 bones a bottle. I thought I was in heaven drinking this in Acapulco on New Year's Eve at a Mexican villa.

Great show my man. You bring the lone smile to my face all day.

    Cheers!

“This is a safe zone” COMPLETELY shifted my mind from wine to Old School….

“I'm wondering what kind of underwear the waitress is wearing. It's probably just a basic cotton. But then I think, maybe it's a thong….”

I don't know if Saint Julia Organic Malbec is in other supermarkets, but it's always in My Organic Market (a small chain here in MD and VA area)….and it works with a weekday meal.

  • ZachNYC

Cool show G. I was just thinking about an episode on this topic the other day. I must have communicated that to you telepathically.

The only supermarket wine I see in NY – on Long Island is Chateau Diana and I've never tried it. But if our wonderful governor has his way, the supermarkets will be selling a wider variety real soon.

  • Another Hokie shout out. Love my Va Tech. πŸ™‚

QOTD: Oh boy, I hate to admit this. The wine, *gulp* I get in the supermarket is Beringer White Merlot. I feel so dirty.

  • Randall

    As well you should…

    ;}

  • And this is the palette your trying to work with. You can see my graduation to Pinot Noir is going to be a difficult one Professor Higgins.

I believe kicking and screaming are going to be involved. ;P

  • BrianAF

interesting episode, im looking forward to the series.

Qotd: I don't know if living southern california allows our grocery stores to carry better wines, but my favorite “grocery store” wine that I have seen in most grocery stores, is the Groth cab.

  • ROFL

  • Bah to the both you! πŸ˜›

  • WB GV, Mott & crew! Interesting ep to open up the series. Can't wait to see what else is on deck!

Side QOTD: No Enology or wine programs at my alma mater (Brandeis). There were some people that would sometimes go in on a slightly more expensive bottle with me. I introduced A LOT of people to Carmenere for sure. I know Rutgers had a killer wine class…prof brought in some excellent wines from his cellar. Seniors only.

QOTD: Saw the Woodbridge Cab on here, which I am guilty of. Jadot is on there too. My wife's go-to under $10 is actually distributed by Leonard Kreusch: Twisted River Riesling. Their Late Harvest is really nice, though I have yet to try their Dortmunder or Gewurz.

  • Lizzy 43

favorite supermarket wine is cupcake sauvigion blanc. :0)

    Lizzy43

  • orangebottle

qotd: Ravenswood Zin, Chateau Ste Michelle & BV Cab. and Ken Wood Chard.
this is an interesting category, i'm looking forward to see more this week.
    great show!

  • Randall

:D!! Hey… I'm not trying to rebuild someone else's palate in my own image, here. I simply suggested PN and those others because you prefer white and PN is a med. bodied, NON Cab-like (read: big, tough, non-sweet, dry, chewy tanins… iow what u prob hate about reds) red wine that is quite easy drinking and versatile. I didn't start MY wine drinking w/ a big, tannic monster either, ya know…

    πŸ™‚

  • winerooks

QOTD: Wow, this is tough. I like Cupcake Merlot. Alamos Malbec. Marques De Caceres. La Vieille Ferme Rouge. Cecchi & Monte Antico. Concha Y Toro Diablo is usually good.

  • Randall

D'oh!! Forgot all about the various 'single vineyard' Ravenswood Zins out there. Good call…

  • Liar. You came out of the womb with a glass of Cab in one hand and PN in the other.

The LM Sonoma is at Costco in the Bay Area for $10.99

  • Great show! I'm gonna have to find Parallel. I don't think I've seen it around here in Normal, IL (or my usual town Ames, IA).

QOTD: I actually have 3 wines for you. DiseΓ±o Malbec, Bogle Petite Sirah, and Columbia Winery's Gewurtz. These have rarely disappointed me.

  • johnfarrin

I can see Vayniac's aren't big on math. And SHAME on you Gary for not knowing that there are 25.35 oz in a 750ml bottle πŸ™‚ Math 101: 33.8 oz in a litre; 1000 ml in a litre; 75% of that is 25.35 oz.

  • Ged21

    QOTD: Layer Cake Syrah

  • Latour90

Welcome Back GV. I must say that i don't get the thing that the VaynerNation is upset with guests. The Michelle Turnbull episode was classic. That said.. What is what with of all the flash bulbs going on? That said i love the tasting. Us Vaynernation guys need a few inexpensive views. I've been drinking the “First Run” Shiraz from Australia for five bones. Pretty good.

  • Randall

The only conversions I remember are from my misspent youth…
    (1 ounce = 28 grams, e.g.)

Of course, I do know that there are approx. 2 beers in every 750ml of tasty Belgian beers…

  • DrDelurk

QOTD – Don't buy in the Supermarket much these days (too much local Cali wine + too much Cindy buyin' = too much wine!) … That said… in the old days:
Barefoot (all types are great QPR) … Bogle Petite Syrah … Dancing Bull Zin.

  • Great to see you back! Hope things went well – you sounded like you got some exercise!

Have had all three on occasion and agree with you about the Parallel “45”. A nice Wednesday night wine you don't feel guilty about drinking!!

QOTD: I really haven't bought wine from a grocery store in a verry long time. The liquor store near me has this great Masi Masianco Pinto Grigio+Verduzzo that has been my Thursday nite wine lately $10…no brainer!

  • QOTD1: I'm back at grad school now and I'm the President of our Wine Club. So many Business schools have them! We teach people about wine, the industry and have speakers come in (ahem, Gary…. ). Super fun!
    QOTD2: La Crema

  • winesaurusrex

Funny you mentioned it, Yellow Tail Shiraz. That is my thursday night chilling out playing world of warcraft wine.

  • Phaser

Nice show, the wine of the people!

    QOTD: Double Dog Dare Merlot.

  • Garagiste

    Casillero Del Diablo Carmenere

  • Me being apart of the CKC at Iowa State, we actually have a wine class that we can take (have to be 21 of course). But, the guy who teaches it is our university President's in-house cook.

Might have to take it, but it's pretty hard to get in because it fills up quickly.

Still need to actually try some wines…
