lines of the day – ‘did you see my hair on that episode, spike city USA’ and talking about when customers used to disregard GV in the shop because they thought he was too young, ‘I used to systematically blueprint on how to humble them’

Classic the line of the day; would love to have been a fly on the wall when those pain-in-the-ass clients got their come-uppance

I have been waiting for this forever! I still have never seen that Riesling in South Dakota…

QOTD: J. Lohr Estates Cabernet – put it on the show!

  • Karl

There are 25.36 US liquid ounces per 750/Ml bottle of wine.
In the Willamette Valley, OR where I work there is a junior college with a winemaking/Viticulture program.
I am attending Cornell's program for Enology and Viticulture in the next year.
My favorite supermarket wine is d'Arenberg Stump Jump or more common a Penfolds Koonunga Hill.

  • WpgGord

QOTD: Santa Rita 120 Sauvignon Blanc.

  • QOTD: Bodegas Juan Gil “Wrongo Dongo.” All.Damn.Day

as for conversions… no worries. Relating to the CKCs out there, the only conversions I cared about were converting dollars to pitchers of beer. Got out of hand though when I priced up a car at 7,500 pitchers of beer…

I've always found the Jaboulet parallel 45 to be an easy to find, decent wine. It's never thrilled me by any means, but I've picked up quite a few bottles on the fly when in the need of a table wine.

  • WineWoman

QOTD: Except for Wegman's or Whole Foods, most supermarkets do not sell wine in the Dirty Jerz, though I think they just passed the law to begin selling wine in grocery stores. I usually go outside the box and don't purchase the well-known, easily accessible, mass-produced wines even in the 10 dollar range, but someone gave me a Gascon Malbec that I enjoyed –also the Mondavi brand, Casa Lapastolle and Cantini Zacagnani(with the little brown paper ribbon).

  • Jwyche4

    What up Gary.
CKC checking in from the U of Central Florida. We have quite a few wine courses due to the large hospitality program at our school.
QOTD: I'm always down for the Sebeka Sauvignon Blanc as grocery store wine goes.

  • Jasonstrader13

    QOTD: gruet bubbly

  • DAveAll

thanks. nice show. nice to see you don't know oz in a bottle. haha.
qotd: Casillero Del Diablo Cab Sauv. and Alamos Malbec.

  • gotsha

QOTD…Hands down, my fav grocery store wine is Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc

  • Wine Doc

My supermarket lock is Conn Creek Cab. No bones about it.

  • Agree on the Parallel 07, only 87 from gary is just mean :). The 2006 was rubbish

  • benkearney

    QOTD: Columbia Crest Cab Sauvignon

  • don’t you mean 1961? That changed someones life 😀

  • mattgmann

QOTD: hrrrmmmmm… Chateau st Michelle dry Riesling is a winner. And gotta throw in Babich Savignon Blanc as well.

Not sure if these are all supermarket wines, but widely available winners for me are the Juan Gil Jumilla, Mont Marcal Cava, Los Rocas Garnacha, Bodegas la Cartuja Priorat, Altos de la Hoya Monastrell, Evodia Garnacha.

There's a definite spanish theme in my inexpensive wine purchasing behavior. If you're going to spend some time on CKC wines Garry, you cannot pass up a spanish show! Where as the French wine section in the super market is generally pretty bare, there's almost always a <$10 tempranillo/rioja that is drinkable.

I'm looking forward to some domestic value plays. Most domestics that make it into my house are mid priced Meritage blends. I will throw out an inexpensive pinot I've been drinking though. Called Spruce Goose, from Willamette (i think). Not face meltingly good, but styled in a very old world manor, and just plain tasty.

One more nice inexpensive wine so as not to leave out the french. Terres Falmet Cinsault is a light, simple, very inexpensive wonderful little wine. Very fruity, and a little funky, and interestingly cloudy in the glass. Worth a try.

  • mattgmann

+1 to the kim crawford sav blanc

  • or just one, belgian beer have a tendancy to come in 750 ml bottels too 🙂

  • mattgmann

+1 on the bogle petite syrah

  • orangebottle

    thanks Randall.

  • gotsha

Thanks for the vote of confidence.

  • Stan The Wine Man

    Dude,
I am slightly disappointed that you came across as a wine snob tonight. Oh well, I guess the “commodity wines” are not good enough for you. Define a commodity wine anyway. That is a good question for you to answer. Does it mean a wine that is easily available? A wine that is mass produced? Just curious.
My favorite “Commodity Wine” as you put it is the Marietta Old Vines Red Lot whatever. Always consistent and usually above average.
Gary, you did a good job as usual and I always appreciate your opinion. Just saying. Cheers!

  • Clarkbar27

Thanks for the big ups to the Midwest, your brothers in humidity.

Overall import wines dominate for my palate. It's hard to say enough about the value, vinification, packaging, nose, taste, and finish. While domestic wines have made significant strides, it seems imports are focused on cepage/grape type, terrior, climat, and price. Fundamental but not easy.

Lately wines from regions around Sicily have been really exciting. We are enjoying Aglianico and Nero d'Avola a lot these days. Definitely worth checking out to break out of the noble three…

    Cheers

  • QOTD: my go to supermarket wines are columbia crest gewrtz, ch st michelle riesling and My guilty pleasure, (you know the one you never admit to buying/liking, we all have one) would have to be Sutter Home Moscato.

Great show gary think i had the 06 parallel 45. buddy served it for one of his parties. I remember it as ok but nothing to spectacular. All 5 bottles finished and considering there were 40 people mainly beer drinkers has to count for something.

You’re lucky to get any wine in Frickin South F’in Dakotaneck!

  • Anonymous

Bogle rocks for under a 10 spot.

  • Anonymous

I think most of us love the guests

  • Randall

    + 2…

  • Anonymous

Gary can get six glasses of wine from one bottle. Knot the big ass glass!

  • John Rogers

Nice to see you back. The wines should be available but I have my doubts. Parallel 45 sounds interesting and will look for it. Great idea for for weekday wine break without denting the wallet too much.

QOTD; Mostly Washington wines but the one I usually get is Barnard Griffin cab/merlot under ten dollars usually and quite consistent in quality.

  • KAHUNA

I like that Gary goes all gangster by throwing down with Chardonnay – LOL –

    “Gary why are you crying?”

“bbbeeecccaaaussee Mom I got picked last in dodge ball again”

“but Gary didn't you tell those kids that Pouilly Fuisse is Chardonay?”

“yyyyesss Mom, but then they pulled my underwear over my head”

“well did you learn anything from that experience Gary”

“yeeessssss I am never wearing white underwear again because the skid stains show up too much”

  • Cole

  • paulLI

what's your view on supermarkets selling wine in NY state?

  • paulLI

We can't buy wine in supermarkets here in NYC. Thanks gary! The following question is for Gary…

  • Randall

    R… O… T… F… LMAO!!!! :D!!

  • Great show cant wait for the Aussie cheapies…

QOTD: Can't say I buy my wine from the supermarket… but a lot of my friends loved their “Goon Bags” as we say in Australia! Youtube it or Wikipedia it! Its box wine… usualy Chardy.

  • wawineguy

QOTD: Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling or Brut if I'm looking for good everyday bubbles. Columbia Crest Grand Estates Cab

  • j3w

I don’t think a $45+ Napa cab is really in the spirit of the QOTD.

  • Brunellofello

QOTD: 06 Monte Antico and Kim Crawford

  • Jrouss

QOTD: I like close duval cabernet

Also nice shout out to Wyoming there,

  • JoEv

QOTD: I really enjoy Chateau Le Roc La Saignee Rose. It's nice and fairly affordable ($12.50) and has a wonderful forward minerality that I don't typically associate with roses. A great summer wine. It should be distributed everywhere but probably can't be due to limited production. (Sorry, but I can't shop for wine at the supermarket, PA laws forbid it.)

CKC QOTD: I went to UPenn, and they have a great wine tasting preceptorial (seminar) that's always a big hit and has a long waiting list.

  • Mgrady4

Come on gv, Strike Force in 1985, really? You were right about Santana and Martel they did team up as Strikefore and were tag champs, but they were a team from late 1987 to early 1989. The difference between WWF in 85 and 89 is huge, it's like Bordeaux in 2002 vs. Bordeaux in 2005.

I think you may have been remembering the Can Am Connection (Martel and Tom Zenk) they came a few years prior to Strikeforce. BTW, didn't Demolition suck?

  • jaredlevy

In answer to your side QOTD, I am involved in a CKC wine program. In fact, I'm the president of the Hofstra Law School Wine and Food Club (former training facility to your New York Jets). We would love to have you come down and speak!

  • Brasmovicz

that's funny… I just finished a bottle of the Jaboulet and had the same reaction: I saw it everywhere and didn't want to buy it. I finally tried it and got much of the same profile-dark and red fruit (mainly cherry strawberry) and a nice touch of gaminess. decent structure, but oddly pliable (likable) in the mouth, easy-drinking, but not without some individual characteristics, or truly rhone-y characteristics. I thought 88-87, based on my being excited it was so affordable and my being a devotee of rhone stuff these days…

  • QOTD (real): Famega Vinho Verde, perfect hot night porch wine!

  • IB71

    Good show, as usual.

    Favourite (danish) supermarket wine:
Terrunyo (Concha Y Toro) Carmenere (Chile).

I also quite like the Santa Ana, Mascota, Cabernet Sauvignon (Argentina) and Duboeufs Flower Label Beaujolais Crus.
