lines of the day – ‘did you see my hair on that episode, spike city USA’ and talking about when customers used to disregard GV in the shop because they thought he was too young, ‘I used to systematically blueprint on how to humble them’

Classic the line of the day; would love to have been a fly on the wall when those pain-in-the-ass clients got their come-uppance

GARY!! We have yet ANOTHER Vinho Verde reference!! Good God, man… what's it gonna take?

p.s. I really don't wanna start a long, drawn out campaign for V. V. like what was done for vin jaune! 😀

    N.B.L. 4 U…

  • dsallen

CKC here – I only know of one guy at my university who took a “beverage tasting” class. Nothing fancy.

QOTD: I've loved Pillar Box Red for a while; it's always a hit at gatherings. I'm not sure how vastly available it is, though. Anyone else had it?

  • ONUMello

GV, you said to let you know if we haven't seen these- to be honest the only one I've seen at Ohio supermarkets is the Louis Jadot! I may have just missed the others since I've been buying less wine there and more from you, but I don't think we have 'em. BTW 750ml = 25.4 ounces!

CKC QOTD: Just graduated from the CKCs; small Ohio Northern University doesn't have many wine drinkers and certainly nothing organized- the midwest is mostly beer pong

QOTD: I end up getting the Ste Michelle Riesling every vintage- it's one of the first wines I remember really liking as I was getting into wine and even though it's a bit simple for my palate now, it's still enjoyable and tough to beat for 9 bucks

  • howlr5

Columbia Crest Horse Heaven Hills Chard,Cab Sauv and Merlot are ridiculous QPR wines.

  • howlr5

Great show. Glad you are back in the Thunder Saddle!!

  • howlr5

    750ml= 25oz

  • wizzardsblog

    Welcome back Gary 🙂

  • ilbee

Should I be offended by the QOTD since I'm not from the U.S. and live in a country where it is not allowed to sell wine in super markets? Guess not

Jaboulet Cotes du Rhone sells at 11 ? here, hardly the same value play. A nice episode anyway, haven't had too many Pouilly Fuisses but there are definitely some good to great ones available.

QOTD: One of the few really good QPRs here is Steinschaden grüner veltliner riede stein at 9,15 ?

  • CJ

    Hi Gary !

Interesting, that you tried the Parallel “45” ….. I had it in a tasting for a german wine magazine three weeks ago and had a simmilar impression of it. Concerning the Pouilly Fuissé: You know that 2008 wasn´t really a great vintage in many regions of France – especially not the Burgundy ! Nice show ! Cheers

  • tarany

QOTD: Funny you should ask, because Parallele 45 is my go to super market wine. I believe it was maybe two or three years ago that GQ recommended it as an available everywhere, old reliable, cheap mainstay. At the time, I was definitely in the CKC, and it's just kind of stuck with me since (despite the fact that quality can vary from vintage to vintage). My favorite wines are still from the Rhone valley; I love me some granache.

My other favorite cheap and semi-ubiquitous wines, although maybe (?) not quite commodity wines, would have to be Bodegas Borsao garnacha “Monte Oton” and La Mano mencia roble.

    Should be a fun week!

  • Cannot buy wine in the supermarket, but would like to, and everyone should be able to buy Guigal Côtes-du-Rhône

  • castello

    hundred first!

  • castello

    CKC????smartass

  • Iggy

Wolf Blass Cab Sav Merlot blend. Not bad for around $9 Aus.

  • castello

McManis overated! Ok it's only 7 bucks but still..

  • castello

    poo—lee fuise?

  • j3w

QOTD – Ghost Pine Merlot goes on sale here (out west) for $13, Coppola Claret maybe $2 more the same price, both are great grocery store finds.

A few people mentioned Pillar Box Red – way too much rocket fuel in there for my taste.

  • MarcBelgium

Supermarket wines, sounds interesting. And indeed, this was a nice show.

QOTD. I never, ever buy wine at a supermarket.

  • RichieHell

QOTD: Well there is this Pinot Noir from Germany made by a guy called Michel Stehr. It's about 4 euros over here and it's pretty darn good for the pricepoint.

  • plcb

I haven't watched yet. The supermarket selection looks like plcb fast movers.

  • Steve

750 ML = 25.36 OZ. Think of it as a hair more than 2 beers.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, I’ve liked both the 06 and 07. And at $11 it’s a good QPR.

  • NeilMc

The Monte Antico is a very good wine for the price – I thnik you can find it at Costco for 7.99/btl.

  • Anonymous

Really? Those guys are pretty crazy, amazing that that quality of bubbs is made right here in New Mexico.

  • Pillar Box is one of my standards as well. Mmm mmm!

  • VaDcRealEstate

QOTD – 2009 Jam Jar . . . . a sweet Syrah, $9.99 a bottle at World Market. Had it first at the best steak place in DC, Rays The Steaks, and paid $22 a bottle. I'd never heard of a sweet Syrah but have to say, it's addictive!

  • Nik_B

Good idea to have a week of supermarket wines – should be interesting to see how they rate.

The UK is probably a different market, as supermarkets here have an amazing selection of wine. Majority of my wine is bought through supermarkets as there are 3 or 4 great ones to choose from (all with proper websites).

The wine that I think is the best value is:
2009 Eva's Vineyard (from Hungary) – a mix of Chenin Blanc / Pinot Grigio / Királyleányka
It is £3.99 normally – I got it for 25% off, so it was £2.99 ($4.65)

  • zrm

Sorry i missed this one last night. Was at the Octavin tasting put on by corkd in DC. Was a great event. SUPER STOKED FOR SUPERMARKET WINES!!!!!! Being in different regions than you Gary makes it really hard to find the wines you review this is excellent!!!!

  • Pizza Vino Joe

Parallel “45” has been one of my favorite inexpensive wines for years. It has been very consistent.

QOTD: Bogle Petite Sirah. One of the first episodes of WLTV that I ever watched was when you pitted it against David Bruce and another more expensive wine. I was happy to see that you rated it higher then the big boys.

  • HuskerJamie

    There's a wine class at U Nebraska-Lincoln.

I'd go with Dancing Bull Zin.

  • guymandude

Like the supermarket finds, good to see some not so fake tasting.

    qotd; Cht. St. Michelle Chard.

  • Penn State never had events with any regularity but I hear certain campuses are starting to develop them.

Recent supermarket find for me would be 2007 Snap Dragon Chardonnay.

  • QOTD: Twenty Bench Cabernet Sauvignon

  • BurkND

Just bought a $7 Opala Vinho Verde at Whole Foods that was OUTSTANDING – does that count as a supermarket wine?

  • Melissa

Don’t be offended. There are a lot of places in the US that you can’t sell wine in a supermarket. You are not alone. 🙂

  • I cant, I get 4 and I’m not using the big ass glass, just big gulps

  • Kaholo1

QOD Segura Viudas Brut. Side Note: Did GV look tired or is it because I am…?

  • QOTD: Wines from Fetzer and Columbia Crest

  • WesMcAllister

QOTD: Since I am in Canada all of our wine prices are a bit higher. Right now one of my Favorites is 2008 Dr. L Riesling. I just paid 12.99 for my last bottle and I am sure it would be found much cheaper in the USA.

  • ChrisR

QOTD: For white I'd go with the Aveleda Vinho Verde, and for red probably the Louis Jadot Beua-Villages. Both are quite servicable and not 1-dimensional, IMO. Like the theme this week, I know you'll follow it up with some serious nerd stuff next week. I'm definitely going to be looking for the Parallel 45!

  • Claire

Covey Run, Columbia Valley Merlot, 2006. $5.99 at Fred Meyer in Boise Idaho.

  • Anonymous

Yeah – gotta have some guests in there now and then. They’ve been fairly good shows remembering back to the recent ones.

  • Docteurqui

    Jacob's Creek-Reisling, Bogel-Petit Sirah, Tiene Duende-Garnacha

  • Anonymous

Just off the top of your head?

  • NeilMc

QOTD: 2008 d'Arenberg “Stump Jump” Shiraz McLaren Vale South Australia. For 8.99/btl it's hard to beat for a weekday play.

Welcom back GV – you'e on a roll. Thank you.

  • angelatcarslon

Glad to have you back. It was a loooooooong week.

QOTD: Well, since TJ's hasn't (and probably won't) hit all 50 states, I'll stay away from our private label stuff and go mainstream. The Perrin Reserve Cote du Rhone is quite serviceable for $7 although I haven't had the 2007 yet, I hear it's really good. Concannon's Monterey Coast Petite Sirah ($7-10 in CA) is a great BBQ wine and I like it just a little better than the Bogle. Piper-Sonoma NV Brut ($13-15 in CA) is consistently good, the Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling is decent for the price point ($7-9 in CA) but for a few $ more, I'd go with the Dr. L from Dr. Loosen ($11-13 in CA).
BTW Everyone, it's International Riesling Week!
Drinking a glass of one of my favorite “everyday” Rieslings: 2006 Dr. Pauly Bergweiler Noble House Riesling ($12 in CA from my local wine shop) every day in honor and hope to get to a few of the local Tasting events.
    http://www.destinationriesling.com/events/riesl… for more info.
Loving Life while drinking Riesling : )

  • Jennifer Verdon

My favorite supermarket wines are tied between Magistrate wines available at Kroger stores (they are a great bang for you buck wine – fantastic quality!) and the new Zamarro wine ($3.99) at SuperValu

  • IF i buy wine at a supermarket, it is the Arthur Metz Pinot Blanc. GREAT bargain at 4,39 euro's so about 6-7 dollars.

  • dsallen

I paid that much for it here in Texas a few weeks ago; I haven't really seen it cheaper anywhere. Maybe another state?

  • Cardiff_Kie

QOTD: Las Rochas – Granacha & Toasted Head Chardonnay

Side QOTD: Recent Grad of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo – SLO TOWN! Great wine programs from marketing/viticulture/winemaking – 30 miles south of Paso.

Gary would the Jets have any team chemistry if they get T.O. ? R u getting juiced for Hard Knocks..
