lines of the day – ‘did you see my hair on that episode, spike city USA’ and talking about when customers used to disregard GV in the shop because they thought he was too young, ‘I used to systematically blueprint on how to humble them’

Classic the line of the day; would love to have been a fly on the wall when those pain-in-the-ass clients got their come-uppance

  • Justrelax86

Just graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in June, Wine and Viticulture major. Second ranked wine and vit program in the nation son!! Just got a job at Justin Winery in Paso Robles.

Good to see you stinking to your roots again with these lengthy shows, loving it. Don't forget, your good at talking, your not good at not talking.

  • hokie wino

“CKC QOTD”: I just graduated from VT this past semester and we had an awesome wine class taught by John Boyer in which we watched past episodes of your show every week to go along with the particular region we were talking about.

QOTD: I've been a big fan of the “Trumpeter” Malbec by Familia Rutini from Argentina ever since I discovered it on a cruise this past May. My parents aren't huge wine drinkers but they also love this wine.

  • Hawksberry

    Concha y Toro Carménère

  • Dcaragher

GV – Good show, good to see the CKC's making a guest spot!

QOTD: I love the Charles Smith House Wine! Can't beat it for $10 and it shows the terroir of Washington State!

I am out of college, but I went to UNH (University of New Hampshire) and they do have a wine course!

  • camira

    bogle cab, i guess.

  • Hoze

    QOD: Menage et Trois Cab
And a question for you…tried to order some more wine last week from Cindarella and your folks tell me that you can no longer ship to Texas. 🙁
Something about not being a Texas Wine distributor??? Any plans to rectify the situation?

  • peggers

QOD: Silverlake Roza Riesling around $10
and I 2nd the Texas shipping question 🙁

  • Alex T

CKC, recent graduate from the University of Michigan (see last paragraph), and my first post having been a seasoned lurker until now.

QOTD: Caves Vidigal Douro 2005, 11 bones. Not exactly supermarket distribution, but I found a few Vidigal wines at a local shop, including a boxed wine that impressed me. Don't remember the price on the box, but all of their bottles were under $15, some under $10.

I believe Woodson deserved the DPOY over Revis (AND he's got his own wine). Also, I believe undrafted wolverine DB Donovan Warren will make the Jets 52-man roster this year.

  • Phil G

QOTD – don't have many, but maybe something like Friexnet or Gruet on the sparkling side of things…

  • Phil G

Go blue! But Revis is awesome…

  • Toewee

Just saw another UM grad in the comments — go blue!

  • Welcome back, Gary!

QOTD: I still like the occasional bottle of Yellowtail Merlot!

  • philoxera

Yooo! You have European wines over there ?????

    Jolly good show…OLD MAN!

  • JustinM

QOTD: Alamos Malbec 🙂 It was on WLTV and rated 88 for $8. 8!8!8!

  • JustinM

    double post… my bad 🙁

  • Pouilly Fuisse was one of the first wines I ever tasted (not with my parents).
That and Beaujolais got me into wine.
IIRC, PF was quite inexpensive in the early 90s, but has gotten much more expensive here (B.C.) the past decade.

  • YNWA

QOTD: Anything from Miguel Torres. You never go wrong with him.
However, I'm trying to keep my alcohol rations as high quality as possible, so supermaket wine has become seldom for me…even more reason for me to follow the week's shows; to see if I'm missing out on something!

  • Phredd3

QOTD: Does Six Grapes Port count? I can get it from my local supermarket. It doesn't really seem like a “commodity” wine, but that's my answer and I'm sticking with it.

Aside: My son fell down the stairs once. I was behind him at the very top of the stairs when he was just learning to walk and he went ass over tea kettle right down the carpeted stair case. I beat him to the bottom of the stairs and kept him from landing on the not-carpeted floor at the bottom. It is still my most impressive athletic accomplishment to date, and quite likely to remain unsurpassed.

  • Mikebest12

    QOTD:
I work in the wine buying team for a major supermarket in the UK. I'm amazed by the value that is offered, they get a lot of bashing but some of the own-label wines are without a shadow of a doubt some of the best value wines out there. My branded wine of choice would probably be something like Jacobs Creek Shiraz, juicy, fruity, easy.

I also wanted to pick up on your comments about when you were in the store and liked to get your own back on people who didn't respect your wine knowledge because of your age. I had/still have experience that, I was working in a restaurant with a decent wine list when I was 18 (we can drink booze at 18 in England) and spent 2 1/2 years there. I learnt a tremendous amount there and especially about the particular wines we stocked and what went with the style of food we served. Often people would dismiss me, I took steps not to get people on their guard so I wouldn't ask them if they wanted 'help' because I didn't want to offend them but invited them to 'discuss' choice of wine, asking questions like did they want to try something new or an old favourite etc..

I always found that when I made people feel embarrassed or showed them I knew more about it than they did, it felt good at first, but afterwards I felt that I hadn't gained anything by doing it and even with the most arrogant of customers, it was probably better to let them enjoy it, even if they were wrong. After all, there's nothing worse than the snooty somellier which is exactly what I didn't want to be. You can be sure they're never going to come back and spend their money where you own/work. Also you might just have a MW sit at one of your tables! (Though thankfully that time I didn't have an argument with her!)

  • Tomdarner

By the way Mott: This video is posted in Pouilly 'FUME', but should be 'FUISSE', sorry, just wanted to point that out.

  • Tcc1525

    Gary,
A great value wine is Trace Cabernet, can buy it locally for 9 bones! This is one of the best selling wines at one of Michigan's largest wine shop called Champanes.
    Tim

  • I like the Parallèle 45 2007 a lot actually, and do buy it from time to time, although with import tarifs it's a bit more than $8 USD here ( more like 20 ).

QOTD: we always find Cuné Crianza, Ramón Bilbao RIoja and Santo Tomás Tempranillo in our local supermarkets, and they're all nice wines ( different of course, but nice ).

  • JayZee13

Interesting concept for the week although I doubt I will get much out of it. However, I have had the Parallel 45 before and for the price-point, it is generally pretty decent wine.

QOTD: I'll give you two – Columbia Crest Cabernet Sauvignon and Cline Old Vine Zinfandel generally range from drinkable to semi-decent for my palate.

  • ilbee

Being 24yo and working as a sales person in a liquor store I get the same attitude from customers sometimes that you and Gary used to get but it's hard to get angry at them since I have been guilty of similar things myself. E.g. if I'm in a computer store and I see a female working there I might assume that she is not as knowledgeable as a male employee would be.

Prejudice sucks but it's just too easy to make wrong conclusions about people based purely on their appearance.

  • Fantastic episode… I finally got to catch the first episode and many other early episodes of WLTV of your show while you took last week off. Exciting evolution!

Side QOTD: UCLA extension offers some serious wine programs. They will be accredited by 2011. Straight out of UCLA and now I am doing wine at the extension on the side with these adult classes.

Real QOTD: I would say the Protocolo Tempranillo–if that counts–which is roughly 6 bones (if you will…) and versatile when it comes to pairing. A weekday sipper but certainly enjoyable. Tempranillo is just an awesome varietal!

Cannot wait for the episode tomorrow. And, how about that Kovalchuk deal not going through or Frolov going to Rangers? Love off-season moves. Not sure if you really follow hockey? Just throwing it out there!

    QOTD – My wife and I enjoy Peter Lehamann's Clancy's 2005.

I have been watching your show for some time now. The bad part is that I am in Israel and can not buy any of the wines you recommend. The good news is that we have enuf of our own to keep us happy for quite some time. I am co owner and operator of Wineofthemonth club in Israel. We seek out wineries that make 10K bottles or less a year and bring them to our members and friends. Amazing stuff… I would recommend that you try and seek out some Fusion wine. It is not Israeli wine per se but it is wine made with Israeli Chitzpah..
The shiraz cab is amazing and the Spanish stuff in incredible. Can you buy it in the States?
One day we should tape a show together…

The 2 bottles of wine i enjoy and religiously price check at all supermarkets i go to are:

    1) Coppola “Diamond Collection” Pinot Noir – depending on the vintage, the best price i've seen is at Cost Co for 12.98 on the '07 and 13 somthing on the '08, Trader Joe's priced both vintages at 14.99 – a great wednesday night wine!

    2) Sterling Vinyards “Napa” Cabernet Sauvignon – the '03 was my favorite vintage and i started paying attention to the price after that. Most supermarkets carry this wine and good prices range from 18.99 – 21.99 (mostly at Asian markets) and more expensive at places like Whole Foods and Bristol Farms where i've seen it priced as much as 25.99 for the same vintages as at the Asian markets.

  • Bill_Murray

Welcome back. QOTD: Robert Mondavi Napa Cabernet. When i lived in Hoboken, $16.99 at the A&P or Shop Rite / bottle for the 2004 was a S T E A L. I'd say for any $5 – $15 drinker, especially cab drinker, it is THE wine cheap enough but good enough to get you interested in higher priced wines.

@ theburnmill – Peter Lehmann is a great call too. Clancy's or the Barossa Shiraz are both awesome and affordable.

  • chicago mark

Monkey Bay ..Rose and or the Sauvignon Blanc. A decent quaff for the price.

QOTD: PA, nephew…no boo's in the stores : ( We are excited that we can get it shipped now!

  • plcb

QOTD: I saw one of my favorites posted already, Ramon Bilbao Rioja Crianza. Other possibilities are Trivento Torrontes, Chateau Ste Michelle Chardonnay.

FYI the Parallel 45 is regularly 11.99 in PA but sometimes on sale for 8.99.

  • Tracy Reasoner

I had the Parallel 45 and it was great with pizza and burgers. In Hawaii this sells for $12 and I gave it an 88 rating. A solid value wine!

QOTD- I have no bottles of chardonay in my 200 + cellar so when I do drink it I but super market chard which is either a Deloach or J. Lohr

    aloha,

    Tracy

  • Yip

Long time lurker since I saw the sake episode.

I'm 19 and in college and, thus, cannot buy alcohol so I have been brewing my own sake, mead, and beer. I am not in a wine program, but I am going to do an independent study on brewing huang jiu. Maybe when I'm good enough I can send you a bottle 😛

  • Jssharp2

    QUTD: Forest Villa Cab

  • rieslingrocks

QOTD: “Durius” it is 100% Tempranillo from Castilla Y Leon. 2 Euros 49 cents a bottle.
It is a brilliant BBQ wine. When I buy it I can never believe the price.
In a blind tasting I had with friends it came second only to Chateau Pichon Longueville 1999! A stonking wine!

  • adam_riley

I went to school in Boston at BU (graduated 3 years ago) and we had a pretty serious wine class there.

QOTD: My favorite is Marqués de Cáceres Rioja, 12 bones, and I like to drink it a lot.

  • BillyClyde

Love that you admitted that your approach to customer service when you were 18 was to humiliate your customers. My…how you've grown.
QOTD – Couldn't help but notice that a lot of the supermarket wines in the comments were still 12 bones and up. For us for everday, much cheaper. – Me – Little Penguin chardonnay about 6 bones, spouse – Beringer chenin blanc about 6 bones. Both are cheap and completely drinkable.

  • Don Simpson

Gary — your timing for this episode is crazy because I was actually just thinking the other day you should do a show in widely available wines across grocery stores.

QOTD: 2006 Ergo Rioja Tempranillo — I actually first had it at Founding Farmers in Washington, DC. They carry it at Giant and Safeway for about 12 bones so I'm assuming its available everywhere. Nice flavor profile and a great every day sipper!

  • MDSmitty2488

CKC QOTD: Unfortunately the University of Michigan does not offer any course on or about wine otherwise you know I would be in that class every semester

QOTD: My favorite supermarket wine is Joseph Drouhin Laforet whether it be white or red I feel like these two wines really deliver for the value and are nice middle of the week wines.

  • VanF

Awesome run of Thunder!!! Krank of out GV & Mott!!!
QOTD: Kim Crawford… sauvignon blanc OR pinot noir… luv 'um and can find them just about anywhere. Great summer fare. Drinking a Starborough sauvignon blanc from Kroger for the first time and it's NOT bad BTW!

  • MDSmitty2488

  • the flashes were from the camera for some photos a mag needs of him…

  • PatW

QOTD: Mondavi Reisling (Moselle). Had some tonight with a sandwich. Goto wine for everyday and family that are not much into wine.

  • lawrenceleichtman

interesting episode. Since I have to count Whole Foods in the supermarket mix and there aren't that many supermarkets in Santa Fe, Kermit Lynch Beaujolais is my favorite supermarket wine.

  • Ditch00

Currently out of work so enjoying all the ppast episodes of wine library and trying to get back into the scheme of things…
Cant believe youre approaching episode 900….wow..

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

Glad to see you doing this type of episode. Very interesting on the 45! Will have to pick up a bottle and see what it's like.

Side note: When I got into the cigar business, I was 18. Nobody wanted to take my recommendations and got picked over for the “older sale rep in the store”. I knew in my heart, I was more knowledgeable on the topic and had been studying tobacco/cigars for since I was 14…plus smoking them. So, Gary, I know what it's like to pull out the trump card on those that think you are too young to know what you are talking about. I used to tell people, “You may have been smoking longer than I am old, but do you know what you are smoking?

QOTD: I'm going to go with Penfolds Rawson's Retreat Shiraz/Cab. For $9, the profile is great. No “Space Bag” for me…leave it in the box…lol.
