Not too sure about the five minute format…seems a bit too short

  • I like the short format but I think you could split the focus between short and long. I don’t know why but it seems that a lot of content makers on the web have started to lean toward shorter or (even worse in my opinion) at “standard” tv/radio times. If your podcast etc, fills one hour- let it fill an hour. But if you’ve got more info than can be squeezed in an hour- why the hell are you sticking to an hour? That’s the great part about the internet- THERE ARE NO RULES. Seems like a lot of people are starting to forget that. The key, no matter what you’re doing, is to keep true to who you are and what you do- that way, you’ll never loose.

Short format is great, but only if wine is worth drinking. You might have to pre-taste, or edit (try another, then another, then go with the one that was o.k.), or shoot more than one episode if the first wine really sucks. I’m not really interested if you’re going to spend five minutes crapping on a wine. I don’t doubt your taste buds, but I want to be lifted up. Don’t mind if you review 3 wines looking for a good wine, but for some reason with only one wine, I need it to be interesting if not good.

  • Julianne

Hey Gary! Thank you! I’m such a geek for information on regions, climates, growing seasons per vintage, production methods. I totally love the new format. If I can’t easily get the specific wine that you’re discussing, I still can take my newfound knowledge and apply it to try something new. And I always have five minutes to spare, so it will be much easier to keep up with my Wine Library episodes. Thanks for making my continuing wine education so laugh-out-loud entertaining. Love and peace!

  • Gary, I met you at a book signing in Little Italy and I’m a big fan (cause you keep it real). I pretty much drink full bodied Melbacs and Cabs, but I will definitely go buy this. I’m a novice when it comes to wine and this format really helps especially because you talk about the region and you taste it. The focus and tighter format is great for educating people like me and for a world with a short attention span. πŸ˜€ By the way I’m reading “Crush It” for the 3 time again, so I can continue to crush it.

  • Belugajones

This show certainly was really informative for only being 5 min long. However, I tend to like the long episodes more. I ditched my cable to save some bones and instead I just stream you, jon stewart, and colbert, so if they’re too short I have nothing to watch!!!

  • C-Daddy

I like your videos to be about 15 minutes and I enjoy the fluff so long as you don’t skimp on the wine nerd stuff. The more information you give, the better in my opinion. I like 3 or more wines being reviewed because usually only one is something I might go out and look for.

QOTD: Hey Gary. I like the short format, but I think you’ve discovered what people want… Variety! You’re always changing it up in style and format. If you can’t make everyone happy, make everyone happy every now and then. I’d like to see you bring something totally new onto the show, I think it’s time to add a new “tradition” like the laid-back Friday couch, but obviously not that (new). Keep it up GV!

  • Randall

    HA!!!!!! Too Funny!!

  • thnx C-Daddy!

  • Rasul means a lot to me man, really, thnx!

  • Beluga I really appreciate it, thnx for the feedback!

  • Aurora

Gary: With respect…why don’t you spend more time reviewing American wines than foreign wines?

  • Loved it! I like the longer episodes too though I have to say. It’s nice to devote a good 15-20 mins to your show and let all the info absorb throughout the course of it. Also, it’s tons of fun to see your comparison of multiple wines during the longer episodes. As always, loving it!

  • Julianne u rock, thank u!

  • Thnx Hot Rod

  • Seth thnX man!

  • Agree!

    Great show again!

Of course, I could listen to you, the Vayniacs and wine talk for hours everyday. But if you do shorten it up, a good nerdy info show is a great way to go.

I’m with nickgrzenda and probably many others – I enjoy the variety! And since I’m always grateful whenever you do a show, I enjoy it and I don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

I thought I knew Loire fairly well, but this was nerdy good news to me!

Thank you Gary for all and any show you put out.

    Cheers!

  • Randall

Dude!! You took the words Right Out of my mouth!!
America has become way too hooked on ADD.
A little is nice, too much is deadly… kinda like vino…

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

    Another good show, Gary!

Whether its 5 mins or 35 mins, I enjoy the information. I’m more of a fan when it comes to 15+ mins and the “fluff” is what makes the show. You’re descriptions make the show and the wine more interesting. Love the nerdy wines…love learning about them. Since I became a Vayniac 5 months ago, I can’t tell you how much I have learned and appreciated. Keep it up at whatever format you choose. Talk to you on Thursday!

  • Auroa will do, makes sense maybe I am missing the boat!

  • Sasha means a lot, good feedback!

  • Lorenzo

Ill post from the non-wine side of things. The reason I watch WLTV is the “in between” time. Meaning your intro and outro but even more the “in between” of the 3 wines. That minute or so of your rambling with a guest, or mott, etc is what I enjoy most. The wine part I appreciate but I prefer the ……. (Remainder of comment cut off by Moderator Gary).

  • Fantastic info! I like the longer format better but this was excellent content packed into a short snippet. QOTD: I’m a big fan of Loire, especially Sancerre but obviously don’t know enough because I am not familiar with Savenniere. Will definitely seek some out!

  • Ryanpalmerfoundation

Gary, if by tighter you mean shorter than you could possibly have text at the beginning introducing the viewer to the wine. But I sure hope you don’t change it. I really enjoy the shows and your detailed explainations. Keep it up and I can’t wait for the Thank you Economy!

  • I really enjoyed this actually… very digestible but at the same time I think they should maybe vary in length. If they were only 5 mins all the time it might seem like to show is getting lighter. I guess we’ll have to see but I’m sure you’re trying this for a reason ;).

  • Nilo Lemos

like this format also, like both

  • Nilo Lemos

    stupid question

  • Rprouty

    G.
I got to go the other way on this one….I believe that more is more…not less is more. I enjoy the long format show with random sports/wine/life banter peppered through out. I’m loving the loire right now. With the hot summer the crisp white is what i go for every time.

  • No92

I like the longer format. I feel I get more info with three wines of the same style. I also enjoy the stories, the sidetracks and tangents. That for me defines the show. I want to hear stories about Mott, Lizzie, the family the staff, and the behind the scenes. I used to watch a lot, now I just tune in when you are reviewing a style I am interested in; bubbles, Riesling, Russian river, central coast, beer, parings or guests. Congrats on 900. I remember 300 and I still have the wristband to prove it. Help me change some laws in IL. Best, – Jon

questions like these is what make people all over the world think that americans are all ignorant nationalists that know nothing about the rest of the world culture, wine is culture and it did not start in the States, read the book ” A Short Story of Wine” by Rod Philips

  • Ben

Good show Gary! I like the 5 minute show, but I would be disappointed if they were always this short. I like comparing wines head to head, and I appreciate the “community feel” of the longer shows.

P.S. – I’m a bit of a lurker, but only because up until today I’ve always had to watch the show via ipod because my computer was so old it would barely play the video. Now I’m up to speed with a new macbook pro!

  • Nilo Lemos

no you’re not, Gary! good wines comming from all over.

  • Randall

Give me a BREAK, a–hole!! What… you don’t like your regional wines/beers/produce/cuisine style??? Lighten up, my man.
(and I use that term Loosely)

p.s. maybe you would do well to find out more about American wines, food, etc.

    Hey GV,

I like this style, but I agree with No92. I really like the tangents, sidetracks, and the variety of wines. With that said, love the show regardless.

  • Randy

I like the new format. I really enjoyed your discussion on where the wine was made. I think a mix of some in-depth, focussed episodes (new format) mixed with 3-wine tastings (old format) episodes would be ideal.

  • Randall

Cough cough mhemm cough *douche* cough hem cough…

  • CentralCoastKyle

Dig the format. Machine-gunning through 3 wines of similar style, aoc, varietal, etc. for the 11-15 minute show is also great. It’s nice to seen wines judged against each other to put them in perspective. Qotd pt 2: low to mid-priced value, oh boy. Chinon rosΓ© absolutely rules, Sparkling/Moelleux is reasonable and delicious. Aged whites for outrageous prices. Currently selling a killer 1992 Vouvray Sec for $30 Retail $56 Drink in house, at my place of work. If your looking to expand your old world palate and are willing to spend $15-$30 on decent wine look no further than the loire.

Liked the new format. It’s good to get the information although a little fluff is always good. By the way is there a podcast of your debut on radio. I was unfortunately working and missed the airing.

  • Hey Gary! It is hard for me to watch all the episodes of your show because of school, so the shorter format does make it easier to keep up. However, I think the “fluff” is very much a part of you. I enjoy your personality as much as I enjoy learning about the wine, so I don’t mind hearing you elaborate about certain things. Either way, keep up the good work

  • hollisd

great show gary. love the info. one i can watch a few more times to suck in all the info you gave us.

  • I really like this format of the show for all of the info, but like others have said, the fluff really adds to the show and makes it more “Gary” like. All in all still loved it.

On another note I will play the pessimistic and say this might be a way for you to break the news to us softly that you are running out of time in your busy schedule. Just a thought but I am sure that is not the case.

  • so pitted andrew

QOTD: Gary, while the short episode appeals to me in theory, I can rarely get enough of you. I therefore will always prefer longer episodes with plenty of lolzzzzz. P.S. I don’t know shit about the Loire valley because I’m 20.

  • QOTD: I know a little bit about Loire Valley but could always learn more.

Qotd2: Really enjoyed this informative format… still get the great tasting notes which you are so good at but with some more information. What’s not to like?

  • city

Great show Gary, I’m a huge fan of the white wines coming out of France right now. I know you’re a busy guy so the 5 minute shows might be beneficial to you, but I love the episodes with three wines. I think that’s the perfect number to review per show. I like when you taste them blind too, so there’s no preconceived notions. Keep up the awesome work!

  • city

I thought that too! Oh no, Gary’s too busy for the Vayniacs nowadays, but I hope it’s not true!

  • waynooo daaa wino

    TOP 200….. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :oD

  • Guest

QOTD – How can shorter be better? Do you only want to watch the last 15 minutes of the Jets game? Don’t you like the pre game tailgate party as well as the entire game?
The longer formats allows us to settle in with you. This felt like a rush job vid on your end. I know it saves you time and you can “can” a bunch of shows but (in my oprinion) you are losing why this diehard fan watches your show. Certainly hope the shorter shows theme is short lived.

  • I really like the short format.

  • L’egance of Looavull

Really like’n the new format! πŸ™‚
