Not too sure about the five minute format…seems a bit too short

Hey Gary, long-time no see. But I saw your twit inviting those of us who had been gone for a while to check this new format. And I LOVED it. This is what I was yearning, information beyond only having the tasting notes. This new format has brought me back.
But I don’t mind the longer programs when “wine is in the house”. If you have good WINE info and guests, you can go longer.
Thank you for this format. All my best.

Hi GV, great little show, this short format is fine, but please, where is the Laidback Couch?
Mott, great appearance on the other show, always fun! K. Murph too, rocks.

My question of everyday: When is WL going to go Worldwide??? I want shipments to Brazil! Please!!

QOTD: Chinon, Sancerre and beautiful Châteaux, like Château d’Azay-le-Rideau , Château de Sully-sur-Loire and Château de Chambord, to name a few.

  • Randall

Right on… I “assumed” (and we all know how dangerous That can be) that you had to change your handle because of log-in probs, like many other people have had to do. Glad you’ve been lucky…

  • Wine Buff

QOTD – was there last month for friend’s wedding. Loving the c franc, but got to spend money on good ones, even locally.

PS – am a long time lurker. GV – I promise to end my lurking if you “link up” my wine parody of American Pie – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ypTyAb1nj0

    Cheers.

Love the new format! I’ll actually have time to watch your show every day this way. Longer episodes are still great once in awhile too.

  • I’m not sure I like tighter one wine shows. I don’t mind the extra commentary, sports/web talk. My two cents.

  • purplegrillz

    Holy Smokes!

@GV …. know thyself…. you know you can’t stick to one format. Embrace the chaos, you know you won’t be able to resist riffing for 20 minutes at least once in a while when you’re feeling it.

That being said, I like a tight info jam once here and there, today was great, I have no hair on my Loire Valley Knowledge Ball, so thank you!

Had a South African Chenin Blanc from Moulderbosch and it was very full flavored, I actually liked it better over ice, or as they say in Costa Rica, Con Hielo.

  • AideMediaGroup.com

I dig this but it’s going to eliminate visitors. You need a longer show when bringing in others for tastings. I hope this doesn’t mean fewer special guests.

  • Anonymous

I like the new tight format, nice to hear some more of your wine knowledge coming out, when you’re only tasting a single wine.

As for the Loire Valley is concerned my current knowledge extends to that it is in France.

  • I really like the shorter version 😀
But I think you need to alternate, one longer, one shorter, and one middle ^^ with respectively 1,3 and 2 wines 😛

Concerning the valley, I’ve been to Paris quite a few times, but never there. So cannot really give an opinion 😛

  • This is a LOT better for me, I try to take a bit of time each day to see what you have going on. I love the show but it is honestly much better a bit shorter and on point for me. By the way you rock Gary, ask your audience when you want real info. I did the same yesterday and got an answer I did not expect, an answer that will make my life easier and let go of something I THOUGHT was important.

  • Even though a longer format gives you more time to tell your story, I realize that most people’s attention spans are very short… and their time available even shorter. So I say stick with shorter posts on a regular basis and then intersperse longer, more explanatory posts occasionally to mix it up. I’d even suggest even shorter, maybe 2-3 minutes. Thanks for being a great role model!

My only feedback would be to think about what got WLTV to where it is now. IMO it’s the camaraderie Mott the off-the-cuff talks about football and other stuff all WITH the wine discussion. I’m sure you’re pressed for time, but IMO I say leave it the way it is. Nothing wrong with doing a quick-hit every once in a while, but I like the longer format better. Just my 2 cents.

  • I think if you are going to showcase one wine and give a history of the region then I think it should be one that you know for certain is well made and to your palate. How awful would it be it you gave all this schpeel and you end up hating the wine?

Also, I think that you should focus on really unknown areas. What about the Romanian Region of wine making or the Shenandoah Valley Region? That’s where these tight shows should really go.

    *Hands over 2 cents*

#1 Be you but the less pitchy version….still find you heavier on the promo side of your “brand” than the early days. Not bad…just NOT necassary!
#2 NEVER put the bottle directly in front of your face…EVER! Watch any Madonna video(queen of strong camera eye contact)
#3 Bullet your points somewhere really handy as your high energy couple with all the content/facts can come off rambly/discombobulated
#4 Shorter format better. It is tighter and….still can compare and contrast which I do with 2 products on skaterslandingtv.com
#5 Move the Jets spitoon to the side or less prominent position as it occupies to strong of a position…You are pitching/sharing wine…we know about your love/passion but the segment is about wine and the audience…you are a host/guide…you shine through no matter what. Leave something more about you to be discovered…
#6 Turn all your Sirius and other media info into ending simple grapics that you can use as you verbally mention them on the Outro not Intro…leaves audience fresh about where to find you next both visually and orally..plus you do not know when anyone will watch this online so dates/times are not going to be accurate
#7 get right into Intro with great enthusiasm for the product of the da and why it is important/interesting to us/viewers
#8 keep it evolving cause it is becoming more effective
#9 Thanks for the open sharing nature you bring to the plate
    #10 🙂

  • I like the short format? but I miss the comparison between the wines. I am such a wine n00b and if you say this wine is tea-like with crushed lemon peal, I don’t know if that’s unusual for this varietal or is it a signature flavor?

  • Anonymous

I don’t know much about the Loire valley. I didn’t drink wine at all when I visited there back in the dark ages, so I can’t claim first-hand knowledge of any of the wineries. Nice region to visit, though.

I prefer the 12-15 min length, personally. I like when you have time to get a little crazy, and it means that one sucky wine doesn’t ruin the whole show. You can find 2-3 wines that have enough in common to still get all nerdy on us. (As if any wine expert who can’t pronounce “Chateau d’Epiré” could ever be considered truly nerdy.)

  • San

Love the new format! Always interested to hear your opinion but sometimes see the 15:21 time frame and think “Ahh, I don’t have that much time right now” and then end up forgetting to go back so…thumbs up from me!
I still would like to see the old format when you have a good guest.

  • Allan

Great FOCUS on this show. Good energy. More please….

Qotd: Not enough, that’s for sure!

I would say, go with this format until people get bored with it. I won’t. 😛

  • Anonymous

    Love it!:)

  • I think I like the regular format better, if you can keep it down to 15 minutes is the key for me. But I like you are mixing it up and trying new angles. I prefer multiple wines style.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: love loire wines, whites especially, muscadet, sauvignon blanc and chenin blanc the best. Fruity reds nice too… but for me it’s about the whites.

Short form? Great to hear more about new wines. Line the added depth. Since it’s shorter… perhaps you could even do a few more shows a week! 🙂 Long is good too.

  • Allan

Keep on being unpredictable Gary! 😛

  • Allan

Bründlmayer is awesome, i have a couple of bottles of Grüner from him…. Lookin’ forward to tryin’ them out. Cheers waynooo. YEEEEHAAAWWWW!!!

  • BillyClyde

New format-meh. I like the comparisons of multiple wines and I will miss all the digressions. This almost makes you seem like just another wine nerd. But if this is all you have time for, I’ll take it.
Loire Valley – I know my wifel loves the vouvrays from there.

  • mrzitro

GV is always reinventing the wheel. Good for you.
QOTD: there are some awesome Cab Franc wines from there.

  • Great show, as always, Mr V.
I like the quick format, which as you say is easily consumable, however I also like it when you compare a number of wines.
I think it would be great to mix it up and keep both formats.

  • KAHUNA

Sounds like you are memorizing some wiki information then repeating it- If I wanted boring video reviews with memorized information I would just watch my own.

When is the big news announcement coming that was up on the chalkboard?

What about the big party on Sept. 25th?

You should send an email or Twit about the new format

    Licorice and wine is stupid

Why send an email about Tailgating Wines when you drink root beer at Tail Gate parties

    You leave Jets games early

You hired a 6’10 dude cause Vaynermedia sucks at basketball

Woody Johnson looks like a jerk in his dopey green tie and lame ass white hat

When is the “Thank You Economy, I Am Sorry” Cruise?

  • Anonymous

I prefer the longer episodes, but I agree that you do come with the fluff quite a bit, nttawwt

stick to the normal format imo

  • Love the Loire for some awesome Chateaux. Visited Vouvray winery many years ago, and was cool to actually see a real wine cave. Too bad I was too young to really appreciate it.

Love the short 1-wine format. I often don’t have a lot of time to watch, but I know I can slip several of these short segments in.

One suggestion though, if you’re going to continue with the shorter formats, I’d consider “tightening” the intro. With less time, spent, I’d rather see more of you and the wine than the 10 seconds spent watching the intro. On a 30+ minute episode it’s not a real fraction of the whole, but pared to 5 minutes you’re cuttin in to my attention span.

  • Anonymous

this is slightly more informative, but Gary, you can still be yourself while being informative. This doesn’t feel like I’m watching Gary V.

  • I likes.

  • Sergio

I like this new 5min format. Former episodes where to long and some lack of content. Maybe someone could say this is to serious, formal, too much information; but well i guess this is the right evolution after almost 1000 episodes.

  • Frank Steele

Booooooring. Leave the short episodes on the cutting floor. I watch to see YOU (and the wine) and hear your opinion and look forward to being ENTERTAINED.

If you keep the 5 minute format, I will resort to just looking in the Gary’s rating section and not watching anymore.

  • While the shorter version for quick bites and see what wines you like or dislike I like the longer version as we get more of your personality and that is what makes WineLibrary TV and makes me tune in.

  • Anonymous

GV – 110% business! I like the format, I would suggest mixing it up, but given time contraints, I like the information, tasting note, and OUT! Good luck with the radio show this week!

  • I love this Gary. I am a nerd though, so this is right up alley.

  • Every now and then, I think its OK, but… I think me and most of the viewers enjoy a longer show cuz its entertaining, better than watch TV, that’s for sure. Try to keep it between 10 and 15 minutes, I think its gonna be fine. BUT! If you’re in a rush these days… keep doing the 5 minute show and a big special 20/30 minutes in the end of the month or something haha Just don’t stop it =D keep the vibe up. Cheers!

  • Greg Schneider68

Perfect!! Especially when I only have a few minutes to watch…..lots of good info packed into the five minutes….. hope it becomes a core feature.

  • Terrykaney

I like the new format but not at the expense of not having guests and multi wine blind tastings. Keep changing it up Gary and leave some time to talk about your Jets/sports. Will try and check out your new show this thursday.

  • -scottlecount

    very High School book report.

  • Here’s my take on the new format: I like video for entertainment but not so much as a delivery vehicle of facts. I love the details, but would rather have those presented in a map or a wiki. In written form… I love Hugh Johnson’s World Atlas of Wine for example. So an idea would be to do a brief show that’s entertaining but then link to a database of content for more info, and mention it on the show… like a cool interactive app or something?? Cork’d 3.0?

  • Jim Mccowan

Like having multiple wines, like the blind tastings, and you can lose the guests . . . unless it’s your dad!

  • Anonymous

Hurray for the nerdy white wines!
I haven’t had a lot of Loire Valley wines, but I’ve enjoyed what I’d had.

Hmm, I’m on the fence about the short format. I like the factoids but would rather have more wines featured per episode. The comparisons are a major part of the fun.
Maybe have Battle Royales between different regions? One well-known vs. one super-geeky? “Famous” producers vs. “Little Guys”? “Noble” grapes vs. lesser-known regional varietals? Could be very entertaining… : )
And I’m TOTALLY bummed that your Tahoe gig is the same weekend as a friend’s wedding. : ( Any stops in SF this time out or just Tahoe?

  • Allisonvidug

I like the short format. Quick and interesting. Gives me enough information to be interested in googling or sourcing out the wine. Do you ship to Canada yet? : )

  • NY Pete

classic K Man … lmao … that is all

  • Just Jack

Licorice and wine is indeed stupid. That is all.

  • Just Jack

    Not haiku indeed
    Something else wondered Randall
    a new form perhaps

As I’ve said many times in the past, I like pretty much all of the various “types” of WLTV shows. I like guests, but not in excess. I like the marathon shows when they are very interesting. I like the blind tastings, but not all the time. I like the one on one battles that you’ve done. I like this format as well. But most of all, I like VARIETY. So keep mixing it up.

As for the Loire Valley, I am familiar with Chinon and with Sancerre and Muscadet, but that’s about it. I like many Chinons (love that cab franc) and have enjoyed a goodly number of Sancerres (best Sauv Blanc for my money). Frankly, the wine shops in Ohio don’t carry much of a selection of Loire Valley wines, so that makes tasting them a bit of a challenge.

  • Gary – I like the new format, it seems this is all the time I have these days to devote to watching…(wish it were different!!)…I liked the in depth, info packed wine spotlight…I liked the appelation and “terroir” info – make for a better understanding of the wine.

Previous to this show I really didn’t know much about the Loire, Sancerre being the exception…
