    Cheers, mate!

QOTD: Just had a real nice 2007 Louis M. Martini Sonoma County which really brought it the other night. My favorite right now is a 2007 Avalon Napa Valley, but you can’t go wrong with the Left Bank wines.

Great show, I will go out and get the Chateau St. Jean. I have their 2008 Chardonnay which I may have to open in the next day or two.

  • I like the 15 minute format. Gives me a nice break in the day.

QOTD: I’ve moved away from the cab world for the moment, but I have enjoy the ’08 Villa des Anges. Good price, decent wine.
Favorite cab of all time has to be stag’s leap. Can’t recall the vintage at the moment however.

  • L’egance of Looavull

I thought you were going to say Rocky Horror Picture Show lol.

    QOTD: 2006 De Loach

  • laughingmagpie

Favorite Cabernet – Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Artemis.. Current favorite it is a BC Cabernet Blend, just released their new blend and I’m crushing on the 43% Cabernet Franc…

  • QOTD: Can a list a Cab Franc? πŸ™‚ No, my favorite cab sauv of the moment is the 2006 Hellraiser Cab/Merlot from Aussie land. Wonderful porch wine, bright with lots of fruit and delicious factor. My favorite of all time is yet to be determined. I simply haven’t had very many Cabs to weigh in on this.

  • YNWA.CPH.DK

I think I overdosed on the cab back in the nineties too. This episode makes me want to get back into it!
QOTD: Torres Mas La Plana (aka “Black Label”), Penedes, Spain. Great value. Just had a 1978 and it held up well, even though cellering hadn’t been optimal.

  • Jonathan Alfaro

QOTD: Favorite cab of the moment & of all time (though admittedly I don’t drink very much cab) is 2006 Caravintas Cabernet Sauvignon.

The are a relatively new, boutique winery in Solvang, CA, but they source their fruit from all over California for their various wines. The cab fruit comes from Napa. I like it because it has quite the “delicious” factor. Smooth, silky finish.

QOTD: Tough one. Summer has me in a very white mood… liking the lighter reds.

Still: Cab of the moment – Still looking, but drinking Sean Minor 4 Bears. Not too serious, but serious enough to enjoy. We’ll see what fall/winter brings.

Cab of all time: Bordeaux blends, do they count? Chateau Haut-Brion (haven’t had a bottle in decades) is a memory of greatness, and the Chateau Lascombes is also a great memory of my early years with wine. Usually just can’t find ’em any more… and then just can’t afford them.

  • GV Loved the Cab tastings. thank U !!

    Q’s OTD

    -1-
    Favorite – tough one.
I need to lean on the Brice Jones episode and his thoughts and QOTD:
What’s your Favorite Wine” so it would have tosay It was a 1994 Chateau St Jean Cab I had with my wife while visiting Napa enjoying a candle light dinner and celabrating our 20th wedding anniversary: hmmm that was 1998.

    -2-
The Cab I’m drinking now is a 2006 Cameron Hughes Cab from the Red Hills district in Clear Lake County that I purchased for $11 beans and believe me it is FABULOUS.
It’s silky smooth and very inexpensice

    Thanks Again
    I will be listening tonight.

Where can i sign in??? :OP

    YIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIPIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

  • Excellent episode. It’s going to be hard to answer the QOTDs as I rarely drink straight cabs.

    QOTD1: none – see above

    QOTD2:

    • 1996 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate – USA, California, Napa Valley (12/31/2009)
Cork in pristine condition: could have been bottled yesterday. Decanted 2 hours. Dark ruby. Rich spicy cassis nose. Rich red currant entry with obvious signs of maturity followed by mineral & lingering cedar. Could easily mistake this for Bordeaux. (91 pts.)

    Cab of the Moment…Gemstone 10
Cab of all time…97 Whitehall Lane Reserve

  • trying to drink Cab’s but failing hard since I’m hooked on Syrah from Rhone at the moment.
QOTD: Not drinking any cabs for the last 3 month’s, just other varietals, all sorts
QOTD: Fav of all time? Shafer 1.5

  • Happy #Cabernet Day everyone! These 4 did pretty well. I haven’t had the Chateau St. Jean recently…then again I haven’t been drinking much cab recently. My wife rarely drinks it, so I usually have to polish off the bottle. πŸ™‚ Will try and tune in tonight.

QOTD: Of the moment, Don Melchor. Guess it’s my Chilean background talking. All time? I have vivid memories of Montalena Estate, Mondavi, and Beringer Reserve.

  • Good show.

QOTD: Not a big cab guy, highest rated this year was 2006 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Galitzine and its also my highest of all time, small sample size though.

  • Elvindeath

Good episode, Gary. Always good to see the cab episodes … no matter how much I try, I can’t get away from solid California Cab.

QOTD: Favorite Cab of the Moment ? Got to be the 2007 Scarecrow, just because I finally cracked the list. Of all time ? 2003 Larkmead Estate Cabernet Sauvignon … the wine I picked up innocently off a shelf to take home for a nice dinner that kind of got me hooked on “serious” wine. Larkmead is still a fave – terrific quality at a real “affordable” (for Napa) price point. Love to see you taste some on an episode some time.

Do you think the Scarecrow is ready or needs more time?

  • Umm, the most cabernet in any of my empty bottles (24=all) is 7% in a Saint Emilion. I guess I liked it, but my experience is very limited. All of my unopened bottles are Riesling (I keep saving them because they’re too special) and mead.

Gary, when is the mead show?

  • Picked up a bottle of the 07 Scarecrow earlier this year. I opened it for a friend’s graduation; I agree it’s pretty awesome stuff. I used to be a fan of Larkmead, the 05 and 06 didn’t do as much for me as I was used to.

  • It’s drinkable now, but decant it for awhile. I had it in a decanter for about 4-5 hours before I drank it. Time in the bottle ain’t gonna hurt it. I had about 1/3 of a glass left the next day when I woke up and the wine was still awesome.

  • Tried the 2006 Galatzine on my birthday this year. Pretty solid wine. It’s probably on par with the 06 of their main Cabernet. The 03 and 07 Cabernet definitely eclipse it though. Had the 03 this year and the 07 this year a week after it was released. The 03 was awesome and I can see why Parker said it beat Sloan, Screaming Eagle, Peter Michael, Bryant Family in a tasting. The 07 is way young but I think it might be better than the 03; one of the best cabs I’ve had this year.

  • Have had the 02 Heitz about 5 times recently, was pretty solid. Never had the 97. Looking forward to trying the 2007. From what I’ve heard the winery thinks the 07 is the first wine up to their old standards since the vineyard was uprooted in (I believe) 87.

    Let’s have fun…. let’s have a bag-in-box show?

  • Schrader’s some pretty awesome juice. I’ve only gotten to try the 06 T6. One of my favorites. Recently tried their sister Pinot Noir project Aston Estate. Tried the 07 Clone 777 pretty solid, really dug the style. The only thing I’ve had similar stylistically is Adrian Fog, which I’ve been a huge fan of. The Fog can have a lot of bottle variation from what I’ve seen with the levels of acidity. The Aston seems like it’d be less susceptible to the variation.

  • Big fan of the older BV’s. I’ve had the 85 a couple times recently which was still showing well. Tried the 74 a few weeks ago and it was showing better than the 85. I did get to try a taste of the 69 once earlier this year and it was holding up remarkably well.

Good show, for once I have tried 3 out of the 4 cabs you reviewed. Chateau S. Jean is one of my parents stand by producers, and therefore I end up drinking quite a bit of it, their stuff is not bad at all.

QOTD: have not been drinking Cab recently (besides the afformentioned Cab)

QOTD 2: 97 Cake Bread single vinyard (I completly forgot the vinyard but I remember it was single designated)

  • Sweet Reverend

QOTD: I actually haven’t been drinking cabernets recently. I think my favorites have come from V. Sattui in Napa. I haven’t visited in a while, you may have just inspired me to make a trip up there in the near future.

  • Anonymous

I’m still at the stage of my wine drinking where cabs are my staple although I do purchase many varietals.

QOTD: Love Lewelling Wight Vineyard Napa cabs and am anxiously awaiting my shipment of 07’s which recieved a 98 score from Parker. Their standard cuvee is outstanding as well. More elegant rather than in your face Napa cabs.

  • It’s amazing how much many high end Cali Cabs are dropping in price. I’ve seen the current vintage of Cing Cepages from St Jean in town for $35.

QOTD: The last great US Cabernet I had was the 2005 Shafer Hillside Select. Had it two weeks ago and it was my favorite cabernet-based wine of the evening (against 06 peter michael le pavots, 05 Harlan’s The Maiden, 83 Haut Brion, 05 le bon pasteur).

Of all time, many wines passed through my mind, but ultimately I had to settle on probably my favorite Cabernet producer in California: Ridge. Even then I couldn’t decide between three wines, one for drinking now, one for in a few years, and the third because of the mixture of the wine and the story:

    1) For drinking now: 1991 Ridge Montebello (Gary I know you’re a big fan of this one).

    2) For drinking in a few years: 1992 Ridge Montebello (can’t believe how youthful it seemed last year)

    3) 1985 Ridge Montebello. I took a girl I hadn’t seen in a few months out to dinner earlier this year for her 25th birthday. I wanted to get a great bottle for her birthday (she has a great palate so I knew it wouldn’t be wasted) from the year she was born. She had the 1991 Ridge with me and loved it, so I decided on a bottle of the 1985 Montebello. The bottle was opened, and thankfully it wasn’t corked. After about an hour in the decanter the wine really started to sing; quite awesome.

But, the best moment came when I turned the bottle around and started reading the back of the label. I started smiling and laughing. She wanted to know why. I turned it around and let her read it. Paul Draper’s notes on the wine said: “Drink in 25 years.”

It’s pretty hard for wine to get any better than that.

  • Just so happens I am good at “procuring” things. I’ll see what I can do you. πŸ˜‰

  • Brad the Canadian

Question of the day: I had a bottle of wine at a wine store named Cellars of Somona called 2005 Kurtz Stagecoach Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, simply the best Cab i have ever tasted. I’ve read the 2006 is even better. It’s about $80 a bottle, so the one i drink now, as long as i can find it (it’s usually not imported to Canada) is GORDEN BROTHERS – it’s amazing stuff!

I’m going to try and call in tonight! Cheers man. When’s the next time you’re planning a wine event/ vacation for the Vayniacs!

  • Agree on Shafer. Had my first Hillside Select recently (05) and found it awesome. Very focused in the mouth.

Freemark is one of the wineries I find most people divided on. Some love it and some hate it. One of my friends who owns my local wine hangout opened a 02 Freemark Bosche to try against the 02 Heitz Martha’s my friend brought. The 02 wasn’t showing spectacular and was very hard to guess where it’d go. I decided to open up a 92 Freemark Bosche, since my friend who bought the Heitz never had an old one. The 92 I have to say was quite stunning. I even gave some to a guy that works at the wine bar who hates Freemark and he was pretty wowed by it. I’m a fan.

Still to hot for cabs right now.

Will have to try that Cht. St Jean in an 07

  • Hey Gary

Good show, thanks. It’s strange – my wine drinking habits often centre around trying new things (the last bottle of wine I bought was a Picpoul de Pinet), yet the one thing I never bother trying is Californian Cabernet. I couple of cheaper, commercial examples I’ve had have been very average and the prices commanded but the more prestiges labels on the export market seem extremely bad value. You’ve almost expired me to give Cali cab another go.

QOTD: Favourite Cabernet of the moment – ‘ChΓ’teau Smith Haut Lafitte’. Favourite Cabernet of all time ‘Domaine A’ – for two reasons. First it was the first really good Cabernet I tried and it made a massive impression. Secondly because the crazy bloke who owns it insists on growning Cabernet in Tassmania, despite all the proof that it’s not suited to the grape – though the irony is with global warming he is soon going to have some of the best vineyards in Australia.

    Cheers
    Andrew

  • SniffySmith

    Hey Gary,

Great show, lovin’ the CA cab selection. I too, got bored with cab and went elsewhere. I’m starting to come back to them now.

@DickSyncrude – Yes, it’s pronounced “St. Jeen”. The Winery is gorgeous, right off hwy 12 (big wine road in Sonoma) Check out Ledson too, if you ever go.

QOTD: Right now, I’m digging the 05 BV Rutherford Cab. All-time: 98 Dry Creek Cab – It’s what got me hooked on wine

  • Did I hear right? Gary gave the Provenance an 80+ ? and he STILL recommended it! Or did I hear the score wrong.

  • Anonymous

    Hey Sniffy
Sorry if I came across as a smug Canadian, but there have been some pretty ragged French pronunciations on this fine show. Thanks for the tip; we get St Jeen here. I’ll check it out.

QOTD: Sterling Cab 1998. Only one i’ve tasted in the last few months and the best one too.

  • Anonymous

Have you had the ’96 Montelbello? I’ve got a couple of bottles and I was wondering how they were drinking.

  • SniffySmith

No worries, you didn’t come close to smugville IMO. I would recommend the 06-07 Sonoma Chards from St. Jean as well. Cheers

I loved those Ristows. They were made by Pam Starr, till aout 2001, but I have ever confidence that her successor will continue to turn their great fruit in gold.

  • Doug

Still waiting for the blind tasting of 2007 Cali cabs!

QOD – Best this year – 1997 Chateau Montalena
    Best of all-time – 1969 Heitz Martha’s

  • Joe L

Big Ass Glass, value, middle and expensive Cabernets. You brought the Thunder.

Gary great comment on Chateau St. Jean and price points. They were just a run of the mill winery until WS gave them wine of the year. Prices went through the roof. Kudoos to them and you to point out that they lowered their prices.

QOTD: Favorite Cabernet of the moment Vittiano Falseco $9 bones

All time: 1991 Dominus, true a meritage but tons of Cab flavors

  • Thanks, For a min. there I thought He was drawing WAY outside the line…..
