Really liked the format of today’s show! I’m excited to try some Gaglioppo.

No smoke taint in the Alta Maria. In 2008, several high-profile fires ravaged Sonoma and Russian River with terrible smoke damage but the central coast (specifically Santa Maria Valley) did not have fires.

  • Hey WL, You have the wrong wines linked to the video.

  • The “Wines tasted in this episode” is showing up wrong… He didn’t taste the 2009 Statti Gaglioppo in this episode, he tasted the 2008 Alta Maria Pinot Noir. I found it at http://altamaria.com/.

QOTD: Cristom Vineyards Jessie Pinot Noir 2007 from the Willamette Valley in Oregon!

I thought that Cincinnati might have an outside chance, but Tom Brady’s new contract took care of that. So probably Green Bay and the Saints with GB going all-the-way!

A really good Pinot lately has been Bouchaine, Carneros (Sanoma Valley) ’09.

Ok, raises a lot of possible comments. But since I have been tasting a lot lately, here it is: Are there great wines or great bottles of wine. Do you open a wine and try it, and judge it. Do you give it an hour, four hours, 24 hours? A year, 5 years, 10 years? It’s really a snap shot. And Gary, I know you know this. You call them like you see them. The more I have really tasted wines, and evaluated them from opening, evolving while drinking, and now next day. And maybe over a period of time, if I have purchased several bottles, the more I have realized how it is really difficult to make a final judgment on wine. We can only do the best we can do for our palates at whatever point in time we are tasting said wine. Gary said it best, trust your own palate. Cheers!

Also, Jets, Gary, if you have not addressed it, what do you think about locker room controversy. Not sure this is really one to wade into though…

Superbowl 2011 Same match-up as last year
Fav Pinot Black Kite 2005–comes to mind.

qotd: Black Kite 2007 Kite’s Rest… mmmm mm.
Not the Jets, that’s for sure! πŸ™‚

    Thanks for the heads up!

  • A dumb Rhein king

QOTD: I’ve only had one Pinot Noir this year – Greg Norman Estates. I think it was 2007. It was pretty good.

  • Alexandre-CF

    Great, great and great show.
i love this head 2 head format.
this weak is bringing the thunder πŸ˜›

QOTD: Amayna Pinot Noir 2006 -ViΓ±a GarcΓ©s Silva ; just delicious, chilean pinot is bringing serious thunder.

  • Superbowl: Denver Broncos… a long shot but I will still go with it.

  • Ouch… I can’t really answer either of the QOTD’s. Football-wise I lack the knowledge, and PN-wise, I don’t think I’ve had any this year! Been focusing more on Rhone, and recently, Italy. And of course some locals. But I suppose I could offer a guess as to the Super Boil result – Knicks will defeat the Sharks. In four tight sets.

  • Yeah! And I couldn’t comment on the Encruzado episode last week… I say we get an anti-glitch protest going.

  • Well, at least it’s a pairing that would make sense…

    QOTD

Ready, I havent had one Pinot this entire year. I have never met a Pinot in my normal price rang (15-25) that I have liked.

Super Bowl Champion: wow, tough after this week. I really think the Saints can repeat, Brees is amazing. I know the Texans are a hot pick right now, but cant tell. If I had to give a team from the AFC it would be the Ravens

    I love it too

QOTD: Too early to tell, I’ve only watched 4 games! Though the Saints looked mighty impressive against Brett Traitor. As far as pinot noir, I haven’t had too many, but for $7 the Red Tree is a good every night wine.

  • DaveAll

QOTD: nothing on football, sorry. Pinot? I’ve had none this year that I recall.

good show. thanks for having two wines!

I discovered Chalone a few months ago. Not everything they produce is great, but some of their wines are outstanding. Definitely worth trying when you find them.

Thanks Alyssa! Also here is the wine @ WL: 2008 Alta Maria Santa Maria Pinot Noir

You got my vote on Laetitia Pinot Noir.

Although a huuuuuuuuuuuge Steelers fan, I am going with New England winning it all. Another great episode.

Had a Roco Pinot Noir recently and it was killer. Great fruit and super nice silk on the palate.

QOTD: Pats – Saints. Pats all the way.

  • Anonymous

Surprise team for me may be the Texans. They were really impressive in their win and look to have a lot of potential. Too soon after one week to make Superbowl predictions. There were a lot of really good Pinot Noirs this year so hard to pick just one. Had a really good Elk Cove tonight along with a lot of other wine at a poster party for the Santa Fe Wine and Chile Fiesta. Favorite of the night was the Justin Justification 2007.

  • A great, great show. We are both down in the doldrums this week so understand no reference to last night’s debacle. I will find some of the Alta Maria.

QOTD #1: Colts (of course) vs Nawlins (repeat though Manning wins this one) I thought of picking GB but Grant is gone for the year or maybe Atlanta.

QOTD #2: Pellegrino (Olivet Lane) from Sonoma http://www.pellegrinisonoma.com/pellegrini/index.jsp

    Cheers!

  • Can’t have GB and the Saints, both same conference. Bouchaine is a very good pinot.

do you guys really think this ep was taped after MNF?

Ill keep an eye out for that Alta Maria. That sounds really neat and Ive liked the wines from that area.

    QOTD – Saints vs Texans

QOTD 2 – Arbor Brook 2007 Estate 777 Block Chehalem Mountains Oregon

  • Too funny! Just picked up the Alta Maria over the weekend. Haven’t cracked it yet but might need to try it sooner now!

QOTD: Hmm been digging Fort Ross for its QPR but best is probably The Williams Selyem I opened for the anniversary over the weekend.

QOTD2: All I know is it isn’t going to be the Niners.

  • Hah was thinking the same thing. No way!

  • Nice show! Solid

QOTD: Football… im going to go Bears! but for no real reason… Haven’t had to much Pinot Noir this year… but I guess I would say 10 Minutes By Tractor from the Mornington Peninsular.

Favorite Pinot Noir that I drank this year was 2001 Goldeneye. Cherry Bomb!!! Very concerned about Matt Sanchez. He looked shell shocked in the pocket. Checking down to his 3rd option way too early. Still see the Jets in the playoffs but not in the Super Bowl. New England/Houston AFC Title Game.

  • Don Simpson

    QOTD: Ravens vs. Saints

This 8+ min, 2 wine show, for me, feels like baseline for nice, tight no fluff WLTV. Like a well trimmed filet, satisfying without over-indulging. When this is where the show starts, I really appreciate “dessert” when I get it. Way to go Gary.

QOTD: Patriots over the Packers…just feels like Brady is about to go into “eff you” mode.

    Seahawks vs. Ravens

    Tori Mor Pinot from OR

  • Aaack! I loved this show, Gary!

I’ve wondered about Crossbarn because its big brother, Paul Hobbs 08 Russian River is the best pinot I’ve had this year, but not an everyday or every week wine at $46. I have picked up and put back the Alta Maria at least twice in the past few weeks while shopping as I am still on a wine-buying moratorium (which will end as soon as Sea Smoke is available to purchase). πŸ™‚
    Cheers.

  • I tried to buy the 07 Gap’s crown last year but sold out quickly πŸ™
    Love Sojourn!

  • Wish I could remember where I heard of Alta Maria but I just neglected to put this one down. After this episode very interested in trying it as I am with you in not being able to afford $46 every day.

QOTD: To be honest I couldn’t even fathom a guess at this year’s superbowl. As far as my favorite pinot noir of 2010 goes I had a red burgundy in February that I really enjoyed but I can’t for the life of me remember the name of it. Kind of a lame post, I know, but I figure it’s better than being a lurker.

Best pinot of 2010? Thomas Fogerty, with Robert Sinsky Vineyard a close second. Not a big Ponot Rah-Rah though.

Superbowl? Anybody’s guess. My Niners stunk up the joint on Sunday, I can’t believe Smith wasn’t pulled.

  • Yes, I will definitely buy Alta Maria next time I see it. Hey, I think it was you that mentioned Alysian wine a few episodes back, yes? Anyway, I ordered a couple of bottles and can’t wait to try them. (well, I guess wine moratorium is over). πŸ™‚
