EP 918 2005 Marques de Riscal

Checking in on one of the most classic producers of Rioja, Marques de Riscal. The 90 point score caught my attention big time, does it live up to the hype?

Wines tasted in this episode:

I really like Marquez de Riscal is one of the wines that we always drink with my family when growing up, we drink a lot of spanish and argentinian wines….. I like the Luigi Bosca Malbec, and the other day a drink Irony from the Russian River Valley that was very nice, also always hae a bottle of Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blac, living in Florida sometimes in the mood of a great salad with a crisp fresh white…

  • I know these had to be taped BEFORE Monday night….bad game, Good show Gary.

QOTD: I like to drink Gamba zin…. 🙂

  • is the Luigi Bosca Malbec a fruit bomb? Looking to try some different Malbecs

  • QOTD: N/A… too many different things to try to have a “go-to.”

    Nice show Gary (as always).

Re QotD: the 2007 Mas de Gourgonnier Les Baux-de-Provence –> a really beautiful red rhone blend, $15 bucks (great QPR) — the terroir really comes through, and as a bonus, its organic. Its a perfect medium-bodied wine to sip as the summer winds down — and just as you commented, I usually pop one and enjoy a glass or two over three nights – putting the vacu-vin to good use. 😉 Would love to see your impressions of this one.

Thnx to you too Gary, for ALWAYS pumpin’ out great content!

I would say that i don’t think wine NEEDS to blow my mind every time i pop a cork or unscrew a cap. It’s meant to be enjoyed with food most of the time, folks.!?!? Thanks again for bringing the thunder!

    Qotd: JEEEEESEEEEEEESSSSSS, that’s a though one………. I enjoy a good aosihjÃ¥a0wehga0iwhgÃ¥aidgÃ¥aoidhgaÃ¥osidhg and that’s about it! 😛

“Young as a fool, and green as a tree
happy as a man can naturally be….”

  • Good show. I don’t mind the one-wine shows as long as they’re mixed in. I wish I could see more non-reviewed wines. By the time you do the review, it’s already hard to find, so I’ve given up looking myself.

QOTD: wine bottles always last me a week. My prof mentioned Little’s Law a few weeks back. When he was building his wine cellar, he needed to know how many bottles it needed to hold. Figuring he drinks 5 bottles a week with 5 years of aging each, it would need 5/wk * 5yr = 1304 bottles. That’s madness I don’t want any part of.

Gary, when are you doing the mead show?

    “The house that Mott built….”

Bring back the Mottster…… Who’s with me???????

    :o)

QOTD: Something by Chateau Ste. Michelle. Usually their Chardonnay.

  • QOTD: No vino this week…Blue Point Oktoberfest

Always though hump day was a weird expression for several reasons, wont go into them for fear of driving everyone on the forum to suicide due to boredom. Decent show, always dig Rioja, Tempranillo is such a diverse varietal and is gaining some serious steam in the US.

QOTD: Our wine, most of the time it?s free (but I still do pay for wine) and I don’t have to stop and pick it up. I usually raid the tasting room after the bottles have been open for a day or two.

  • Where is Mott vacationing?

At the moment it’s Lot 175 Cameron Hughes Merlot. Don’t laugh – it’s the old Haven’s Merlot that they bought in barrel and bottled it under the Cameron Hughes brand. Not too bad for an $8.00/btl weekday wine. I feel sorry for Haven’s though

    Too late, bye bye

That’s all??? Bring the comments thunder!!! Yehawww-i-ooooo

  • The fun part about wine is that I don’t have a go-to wine! Not by producer at least. I do enjoy lighter wines though.

At most I might buy a case of a particular wine. Once it’s gone though…time to move on….

Up until I got diagnosed with Gastro Reflux today, my go to wine lately was Vinho Verde, Rene Barbier Spanish White, and Txakolinas during this blistering summer. Will be on a sabbatical for a little while until I get my gut in order.

I just tried this wine recently, along with 2004 and 2003. All very solid and at a great price point. I thought the 2005 had a little bit too much new oak compared to the 2004 and 2003, but will probably mellow. Its available everywhere and represents excellent value. Not sure if its a 90 pointer. 87 seems about right. Hump day wine: Kanonkop Kadette.

Paul Sauer brings the thunder!!! I love it. But don’t drink it everyday, though,!

  • Allan

Cool, the way to cut it.!

QOTD: Twenty Rows cab or Bogle petite sirah (both of which I got into based on Gary’s past recommendations.) Thank you, Gary.

QOTD: I’m poor so my go to wine is whatever looked interesting at Trader Joe’s for under 6 bucks. heh 🙂

Looking forward to Wine & Web tomorrow. I missed the last 2 episodes because football was on and I have priorities. Hey, is there any way to listen to past episodes?

QoTD — no special wine for me; usually finishing off whatever is open!

I bought way too many 09 Coffaro petites, escuros and Cabs so when the time is right it will be my Wensdy night wine.

QOTD: Lately it’s been the Monkey Bay Sav Blanc. Nothing amazing, but it’s ten bucks and I can find it anywhere.

@TitanicJack – The Bogle is another great deal too, tasty

I think the show is replayed at the same time Friday nights if you are busy Thursdays… I don’t think the old eps are available anywhere legitimately, so unless someone has recorded and uploaded somewhere you might be out of luck.

You had the same reaction I did to the Riscal. Meh. Now the hotel is another story. Stunning!

QOTD: Nothing in special, but i prefer an easy drinking for a Wednesday night. Maybe some nice Riesling.

love the comment about Glee. LOL.

FML- the day after I post how nice it was to have a full episode, we’re back to these short nothings. It’s like you go to a restaurant you’ve heard great things about, you order your food, and you get two bites worth. It may be a great two bites, but it’s not nearly filling enough. Also, what’s with the chalk board? It used to change every day. That was cool. The same thing week after week is boring. If I want to read about your radio show, it’s on the right side of the screen. Change up the chalk message!

QOTD: I try to drink something different with each new bottle I open unless it’s something I absolutely love to keep expanding my palate, so I really can’t say… usually <$15, 85-89pts is a good weekday/humpday wine, saving the more expensive/higher scored wines to enjoy as a nice end of the week treat.

Nutin special, what ever’s next on the hit list.

QOTD: Go to wine, it’s “exclusive” to Marks and Spencer in the UK market, Umberto Fiore, 2006 Nebbiolo D’Alba, only £7/8, maybe $12? Solid 89ish point wine.

QOTD: Oh, I only drink Krug…

When I saw Marquez de riscal, I could almost taste that wine in my mind. I’ve always liked it but never loved it. It was a wine that I have always felt, even more so than others, really needed food.

QOTD: My true answer would be my own wines, but I try not to shill too much on here. So, other those I would say Kermit Lynch Cote Du Rhone, Bogle Petite Sirah and Casa Lapostole Sauv. Blanc.

  • L’egance of Looavull

QOTD: I usually try something new for the pal, but my go to wines are 06 De Loach Cabernet and 07 Ercavio Tempranillo (which I love for the ultra silky finish) at double 15 bones.

Wow, GV drink for 3-4 more years. Jay M. drinking well through 2030. Now I can absolutely see how scores and tasting notes differ but why such a MASSIVE difference in drinking window. Someone please enlighten me

I have a case of ‘murrieta castillo y gay rioja ’01’ that I’m not looking to touch until 2025…

QOTD; Hess Allomi Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Widely available, under 20 bones, surprisingly complex and robust. Not just another cheap Cal Cab.

  • QOTD: my current go to wine is the 2006 Twenty Bench Cabernet Sauvignon. Just can drink that on the spot and shut the world out and put the blackberry in the garbage disposal… at least think about it.

After all of the, back to crushing it working on a new business.

Love Paul Sauer. What a great wine! It is not too crazy in price, but Kadette is more Wednesday night, Paul Sauer more weekend. Cheers Allan!
