  • Here’s my cat (The Catster) next to a bottle of Burgundy:

QOTD: We have a yellow lab named Kate. She’s a good friend.

  • Grill Factor

My family is from Le Marche, was there 2 months ago and smashed some Verdicchio. Let me tell you this, in terms of food and wine and charm, Le Marche brings more thunder than Tuscany. Yea, I said it…

I love fish. Poor old Jack, my Siamese fighting fish, died 6 years ago this November…

  • that’s up to the man…

  • WTG Verdicchio. Last Italian white I had was a Gavi. Definitely will have to check this out. Nice tight show.

QOTD: My two kitties, though they’re troublemakers…Luna and Ginger. In case you were wondering, Wasabi is Luna’s middle name.

  • WineLou

These inexpensive verdicchios are surprising to people as they are terrific food wines (try them with fish in a cream sauce, as the acidity is perfect). But what’s truly eye-opening are the the single vintage and reserve bottlings, which are world class wines that nobidy knows about. Some of these are not substantially more expensive than these wines. Bucci, La Moancesca, Garofoli and Umano Ronchi are all making spectacular wines that are worth seeking out.

  • Schriftlieder

a couple french winemakers I’ve spoken with favor cement tanks because they do not flavor the wine like oak might, and are not as reductive as stainless steel tanks (ie, static electricity inhibiting oxigenation of the wine)

  • Schriftlieder

The Brunori wine tasted is their entry level, young vine wine…if you see the “San Nicolo” around, at about $16, it’ll rock your socks off. Had it at a restaurant in Manhattan last week … great value.

  • Don Simpson

Gary – nice job featuring Verdiccio! I’ve been exploring the italian whites over the past 6 months and have enjoyed this varietal quite a bit.

QOTD: I grew up with dogs (brittany spaniels) and for some reason we always gave them american indian names, which we shortened. For example, Shenny (short for Shennandoah) and Chey (short for Cheyenne). I will definitely get another dog someday, but my fiance and I have a red tabby cat named Izzie and she’s pretty damn cool.

  • Don Simpson

Not sure which part I like better, the fact your cat is next to a bottle of burgundy, or that its name is Catster! ha. Well done on all fronts.

  • Good show ! I’ll be trying some Verdicchio this weekend. Thanks GV.

    OOTD: Siberian Husky…named “Linus” !

  • flavasauce

    QOTD:
As you can see from my avatar I have a pug named Ethel, but we call her Chubby most of the time. I also have a Jack Russel Terrier named Lola. Used to have a cat named Beaver who now lives with my parents on a big farm in CT where he’s much happier than being trapped in an apt in San Francisco with me and the 2 dogs.
Animals rule!!! Unconditional love is what they’re all about.

I’ve been running the gamut of Italian wines and Verdicchio is one of those varietals I’ve yet to try. Got to see if I can find one of them.

QOTD: I’ve had a lot of pets growing up: three cats and two dogs and I, like Mott, have trouble picking which one would be my favorite. We just had to put down my dog last week though so I will give him a shout out, “We miss you Scout!”

    GARY!!!!!

QOTD: I had 2 Beagles when I was a kid..Jigger & Beasley.. BEASLEY was my favorite..she followed me everywhere, even to school…I had a special basket made for her on my bicycle…for this, my brother called her Toto… LOL Annnyywwaaayyyy….
I also had a Great Dane named Bogie, remarkable, smart, LARGE dog! LOL

    xoxoxoxo

  • QOTD: Dog, labrador retriever; Nuba Java http://goo.gl/qL37

My first Verdicchio was a meal in the Venetian Las Vegas of all places. A complete shock at how well it paired with dinner. GV – you might have pointed out that the Brunori is a Verdicchio ‘dei Castelli di Jesi’ – which is primo Verdicchio territory.

Unfortunately the only one I can find at home is Fazi Battaglia – which is in a funky bottle but isn’t the best Verdicchio I’ve had.

QOTD – currently living with two Terriers – the puppy Airedale who drives me crazy, and an older Wheaton who keeps me sane. Can’t choose.

  • Love love love the Verdicchio! Great Show! Love the short nerdy format! Thanks for the info!

QOTD: DOGS!! When I was growing up I had a cocker spaniel-poodle mix her name was Pepper-she use to let me dress her up in doll clothes and so tolerated it. As an adult I had a Doberman Pincher named Mandy and she was the best! They both were rescue dogs & we had great memories together!

QOTD — I prefer small-to-medium sized dogs. My wife prefers cats, Ergo, we have two cats!

RE: Verdicchio; I like them, and would certainly order one dining out Italian rather than Pinot Grigio, but at home I’d go Chenin Blanc rather than either

Adam and Eve said, ‘Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked with us every day. Now we do not see you any more. We are lonesome here, and it is difficult for us to remember how much you love us.’
And God said, I will create a companion for you that will be with you and who
will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you
cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be,
this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in
    spite of yourselves.’
And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve.
And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and Eve and he wagged his tail.
And God said, ‘I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for
you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG.’

Thanks! Great article- I had no idea, though my husband informs me that the Romans invented concrete, so it makes perfect sense. So much to learn!

  • Fun fact: Verdicchios are favorites of Florentine mid-wives ( look it up ). I like them a lot.

QOTD: I have a Husky (my dog), his name is Lobo- http://www.flickr.com/photos/sokalo/3301666822

We had cats when I was growing up, but recently I have become very attached to a friend’s dog, who stays with me when my friend travels. Thanks for turning us on to verdicchio. I’m not sure that I have had one, but I too like white wines with good acid and need to try them.

  • Never had a Verdicchio but anxious to try one.. Thanks for expanding my palate, Gary.

QOTD: No pets (my apt bldg doesn’t allow them). Would love to get a golden retriever someday though. Are they the sweetest dogs or what?

  • NY Pete

If you post one more “I’m sorry” I’m gonna come to your apt. and punch you.

  • Gonzo

    Dogs rule.

Thanks for the shout out to Verdiccios. Very underrated. What’s your take on Orvieto?

  • I’m sorry !

  • Gonzo

Dang. I actually do know how to spell Verdicchios. Sigh.

  • Troytee

Verdicchio is an awesome off the radar white for me. I always try to push it to my Pinot Grigio drinkers and get them to experiment.

QOTD: Best pet- I’m not home a lot so all I have is dust bunnies.

  • Thanks for the great show. I will definitely try these.
QOTD: Dogs, my dog in particular, Moxie Crimefighter.

  • Noleesk

PERCY my beloved first pet as a child (a cat). Now I have another cat, which was saved on the street by my brother, named Priss (from the movie Blade Runner) . She is the BEST!!I must admit…… I am a lurker………but i couldn’t not answer this question of the day

  • Dgonzalez026

Cats are not lame… they may be evil… but not lame. Mine is trying to kill me on a daily basis… really. You can’t leave out a wooden handle steak knife. She sneaks into the sink, steals the knife, and then leaves in exact spot me or anyone else in the house, when getting out of bed in the morning, places their feet on the carpet or rug. The other day she was on the house phone pushing 66666666, and my daughter accused the cat of calling home to talk to daddy. Not lame, just evil!!

  • Anonymous

Thank you, he was a good dog and is missed terribly, but he’s much happier now.

QOTD: I’m a cat person. Long story, but my wife & I currently have seven in our house, yeah it can get nuts but we love ’em!

  • Anonymous

I’ve got an orange tabby named Remy. They’re fun, playful cats.

  • Anonymous

Nice tight little episode. Good to see the Verdicchios showing well.

QOTD: Dog = Caspian, turtle = Nicodemus. Dog > turtle. Dog > everything and anything

  • Anonymous

Dude, that’s against the law where I live 😉

  • Anonymous

    Moxie Crimefighter! Great name! Cheers!

  • Anonymous

Really? Where do you live & (if you know) why is that the law or what’s the limit? Where’s the ‘dislike’ button?

  • Anonymous

I grew up with Malamutes. Great dogs.

  • Anonymous

I’ll admit I’ve never had Verdicchio but I’m excited to try some. I’m always on the look out for varietals I don’t get to see that often or ones that I have never heard of.

QOTD: I have always liked cats, they seem to love a house’s geography.

  • Tom H

My girlfriends mom had been talking about Verdicchios all summer. She is a bartender and wine conosur on Cape Cod. I tried a couple and it is PERFECT for summer (especially on the beach).

    VT – GO HOKIES!!
