QOD: how about tasting some South American Malbecs? Argentina and Chile are making some great, affordable Malbecs that are becoming increasingly popular these days. My fave is Kaiken but I’d love some other ideas too. Thanks!

  • Allan

    Morgon tonite…….

I love the Norton face-off idea. I can’t speak for VA, but for MO, the Stone Hill Winery produces MO’s best Norton, and Stone Hill is the largest winery in MO so it is the easiest to obtain. MO is also known for it’s ports which are tasty. Look out of ’10 MO wines. It hasn’t rained here in forever, so the grapes should have been concentrated when they were picked.

QOTD: Something fun with the brown bags, such as wines from different regions of Spain, wines from different appellations of Tuscany or maybe a riesling blind tasting with wines from Alsace, Germany and Austria. Especially the last one would be really cool, wouldn’t be quite as easy as guessing whether a Chardonnay is from Bourgogne or California

Gary, you have got to bring in OZ CLARKE! Please try to bring him on the show when possible. He would go right there with Kermit and Peter! This would bring the “THUNDER”!

Drinking an 08′ Oyster Bay Pinot watching your past episodes! CLASSIC!!!!!!!

  • Tony

Gary – label said ‘frizzante” – means ‘Fizzy’ in Italian – Prosecco is produced Frizzante, Still -usually only available in Italy and the most common “Spumante” – full sparkle. Frizzante has 1/2 the pressure of Spumante — love the show, 1st time viewer — TG, Hidden Valley Lake, CA,

Some great suggestions. Love the staff guests idea, and a schedule! Yaco, are those even wines?.. can’t wait.

Some pretty weak ones too. Argentina malbec? GV’s done probably 20 shows on it. Guests: Ferrer, Catena, 3 Thieves (btw love the poster, thanks GV). Come on people a little effort? Archives are available, it’s all free.

QOTD: Are all the good ones taken? How about more from the private celler GV? Mailing list stuff like when you did the Kosta? SQN, Marcassin, Cayuse? I know its frustrating for the viewer when its hard to get them but I find it fascinating when wines get so expensive and hard to find. Makes me think of what list should I be on now! If I had listened to you on Cayuse I’d be drinking the frog every weekend. Rats!

Maybe you and Sasha knock off the whole bottle on the couch. No rinse or spit!

  • Allan

OZ CLARKE!!! OZ CLARKE!!! OZ CLARKE!!! i’m with you….

  • Allan

    Beaujolais ’09?

  • QOTD; Brown bag.

  • didovino

Great week of shows. What about wines from lesser known or unknown regions against classic regions in brown bags !!! Let’s see if the new regions bring the thunder !

  • SniffySmith

What are your thoughts on the Oyster Bay? I tried one myself after seeing it on WL

  • Phaser

Start “Wine’s from the states. It seems each state has some kind of wine production! You should start with Michigan! That’s 52 shows? Or something.

    Lions! one in a row!

I have been watching your videos for about a year, so I don’t know if you’ve ever had Greg Norman as a guest. That would be fun!

  • rwino

How about NZ Pinot verses Oregon Pinot verses a burgandy.$ 40-$50..Price point… or
“wine storage” and how wine is effected by shipping, does it really ever recover 100%

  • Anonymous

I have had this before WLTV had it on the show and I really like it. I am partial to the Pinot anyway but this one really has a nice balanced palate. No oak and the fruit is really pronounced. A nice pinot for the price. GV had it right when he rated it on the show. A nice suprise for a twist top.

  • Hendrik

I’ve made several show suggestions over time. Thinking about it over a few days I think I’d like to see something about relatively unknown or unpopular varietals. E.g., Akicante Bouchet, Ugni Blanc, or even Concord grapes, ha ha ha. If your gonna to continue to educate how about it? Nobody likes a nice Bordeaux better than me, but how about the wine pallette you used to speak so highly of?

  • victor

Not a fan of the screwtop for the bubbly – how are you supposed to saber it open? qotd – food/wine pairings, wine and music, wine vacations, sake sake sake, how does your palate change as you become inebriated? 62 and counting… Did I mention sake? Keep it up and thanks.

    QOTD: TERRY THEISE!

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Cheap wines. under $10. Different variety every day. Big tasting too. No less than 7 or 8 at a time. Burn through them and try and find a few gems.

  • QOTD: For one thing, how about some wines that are a little easier to find? Maybe it’s just me stuck here in Puritanical Massachusetts, but I can barely ever find wines that I see on WLTV. Other than that slightly personal request, how ’bout some more “lesser-known” Italian whites? I’ve always been a big fan of Vernaccia. OR possibly some white wines that could work for Thanksgiving.

  • Anonymous

Gary, How about on importers. I realize with recent quest you do show case their wines but it is something often overlook in wine procurement. Good importers show case wines from a number of regions, generally still good even in poor vintages.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: I like watching about unknown/lesser known varietals. I always like the brown bags, even though I like the $430 montrachet I can’t compare what I think about it because I can’t afford something like that.

  • QOTD: WASHINGTON! WASHINGTON! WASHINGTON!

  • Phil Anderson

QOTD: I like where Jacaranda went as I’d LOVE to see more Washington wines. Going with THAT flavor, if you will, how ’bout Madeleine Angevine (is THAT lesser known enough Fischerman?). That varietal is actually grown in the Puget Sound AVA of Washington which most people would be very surprised about. Also, how ’bout a whole show of completely unoaked Chardonnay? Ryan Patrick Vineyards produces a Naked Chardonnay that I find very refreshing and would love to hear your take on it, Gary.
ME, with a LOT a bit of you, are changing the wine world! 🙂

    Great ideas and questions!

  • Allan

    That’s a great idea…. Gary’s gonna get sloppy drunk 😛

    Moulin-À-Vent, D.O.A. 69p.
    Morgon, Fab. 89p.

  • GermanChemist

    Hi,

QOTD: German non-Riesling wine. Furthermore you could do some nice 2005 Bordeaux (Should one buy more 05s or wait for terribly overpriced 09s)
    Take care!
    Steven

  • And ask about Chrissy Evert! 🙂

  • How about wines being produced by colleges or high schools? I remember that gem you found a couple years ago that knocked everyone’s socks off.

  • A_S

    QOTD:
    RIESLING FROM MOSEL!!!

A really nerdy episode would be fun:)

(When was the last time Sir Gary was on the show???)

  • A_S

    That’s a great idea!
    Brown bags = fun

  • Eirikpm

QODT: I would really like too see you, Gary, test your palate. Go double blind, and see if you can tell what grape it is, if it`s new world/oldworld, pricepoint etc etc. That would be alot of fun! 😀

  • Happyhank24

there are soo manny wines that are not reviwed by any one do some under 8-12 red wines that dont have a score and score them u might find a gem or 2 find value dont forget about the CKC

  • Anonymous

QOTD. High end Italians versus High end Bordeaux.

  • CdP in NYC

Riondo’s now screw-capping their prosecco. Seems like a solid move to me.

  • Michael Harris

How do I send you a wine to review? There is a local guy living in my Mom’s town who has his own label and local winery. you can respond or not to my email – [email protected]

    thanks
love your book by the way…
    Michael

  • QOTD: I really enjoy when you do food pairings. There are so many choices, new discoveries replacing the old myths (red- meat, white – fish).

Still waiting for the sushi pairing I’ve been suggesting. 🙂

  • Pizza Vino Joe

QOTD: Maybe a blind tasting between a true Ice Wine and the lesser expensive cryo-extracted ice wine styled wine would be interesting.

  • K2G

    Gary,
Can you do a show on collecting 101. I’m talking all the nuts and bolts, good vintages to look for, what styles/vineyards (besides the obvious Bordeaux) do well in the secondary markets, proper storage, do you keep it in the wood crate, how do you go about selling it once it (hopefully) increases in price, can you sell it by the bottle or do you need to sell the whole case, how long – or is it more a determinant of price? ANy info you can provide would be awesome and very educational.

  • John__J

Wow a QOTD I’ve been waiting for (and you’ll be sick of me Gary by the time you get through this).Qotd: Rarely heard of wines/varietals/regions, How about:1. A Uhudler from Austria, or an Ausbruch, or Strohwein, or a Schilcher2. Wines from Jura- Their chardonnays have a real unique terroir to them, they also have good Cremants, interesting and unique reds, vin de paille, vin jaune (you gotta decant that one a long time and have it with food)3. a wine made from a grape vine other than vitis vinifera4. a DRY German Auslese riesling5. A wine from the island of Reunion (#50 in top producing wine countries)6. Wines from Mexico, Corsica, India, Slovenia, Cyprus, England7. Wines from Uruguay, you could do a whole set of Tannat’s from dry to dessert, or Uruguayan Tannat vs. Madiran8. Hungarian Tokaji tasting-start at 3 puttonyos and work your way up to Essencia9. Misplaced wines, Kind of like a varietal in a place you wouldn’t expect to see it, like aligote, or Saint Bris from Burgundy, Chasselas outta Alsace, Muller-Thurgau outta the Mosel VDQS North of Alsace (in France), the STILL RED wines out of Champagne-Coteaux Champagne, wine from Irancy-the Burgundy appellation that features the red grape Cesar10. A Charbono tasting-Robert Foley, and Summer’s are pretty good11 A Valdiguie, that red fruity grape that’s not sweet and you drink chilled, J.Lohr actually makes a good one that’s really cheap12. Wine Fridge’s-Are they a good buy? Even if they keep the wines cold, does it have the right humidity levels?13. a Pinot Gris Rose, I’ve had some from Loire14 a Hungarian Kekfrankos vs. German Lemberger vs. Austrian Blaufrankish (all same grape)15. a Pinot family reunion-Noir, Gris, Blanc, Meunier, St. Laurent, etc.16. A wine from every state, you could do 5 a day for 10 days. (Go with Black Ankle for Maryland)17. MADEIRA Episode (I get the feeling you’re not that into dry Sherries or Madeira’s) dry to sweet would be cool-Sercial, Verdelho, Bual, Malmsey I could go on forever, but I’ll stop here as I’ve probably already gone too far

Love the brown bags. Bring on the Riesling blind tasting and as an added difficulty factor let’s see if Gary can pick which country and/or region. Go big, at least 6, 2 from each country, not any from the same region. Hey KMurph, maybe you could throw in a Washington or better yet Michigan wine and see if he can find it. Treasure Hunt!

  • John__J

    Sir Gary is awesome

  • Allan

You can say that again!!! 😛

Madeira ohh yes, and sherry i love so much. Favourite is the Lustau sherries. Dry.

  • Ben

    Bordeaux wines please……………

  • SniffySmith

For under 20 bucks it’s a great value, esp. for a pinot. It didn’t do much for me at first, but after letting it breathe for a few hours, it improved dramactially. Cranberry, cherries, a little smokyness, good juice.
