EP 941 Tokaji Tasting with Jean-Guillaume Prats

Gary Vaynerchuk meets with owner of Cos d’Estournel in Bordeaux to talk about a new project, Tokaj Hetszolo. They taste 3 different Tokajis from the estate and talk about the wine business (sorry about some of the background noise!).

Wines tasted in this episode:

2003 Hetszolo Tokaji Aszu 3 Puttonyos
2000 Hetszolo Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos
2001 Hetszolo Tokaji Aszu 6 Puttonyos

Why outdoors? And what’s up with the chalk board in the foreground?

  • dancin

Love Tokaji. Great seafood wine. Try Oremus Mandolas dry for a reasonable, consistently good non desert wine that can be aged a number of years.

  • Redtail

Gary, Jean-Guillaume Prats is such a class act. He is always great. You worked very well with him. This may have been your best pairing to date.

  • Wow… just bought my first Tokaji the other day – a 2000 Hetszolo Tokaji Aszu 3 Puttonyos. Might just taste along when I watch this later.

That was fun! I thought the city noise would detract, but Jean-Guillaume is absolutely charming and wonderfully knowledgeable, so I forgot about the noise. I liked the ending questions for your guest.
QOTD: You are absolutely right! Clean and simple foods, not dessert with this wine. I haven’t drunk or bought Tokaji in far too long- tomorrow without fail!

  • A location ep – nice!

  • sideout

Cool stuff. Haven’t had any but know a little about Tokaji, thanks to GV. Didn’t know the pricing was so reasonable. Great guest and interview. Sound was a little tough but love the change.

  • ben from boston

very interesting. great episode all around. nice touch with the random questions at the end.

qotd – probably out of my price range (spent all my money on armagnac)

  • Nice Show, Informative

  • TitanicJack

Very interesting and educational episode. Wish it had been recorded indoors.

  • kuruneko

Tokaji is great. Never tried anything from Hetszolo, though.

  • kuroneko

Grr, why was my name wrong? Oh, well. Nice episode. Interesting to see Gary discussing with a thoroughly French guy. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Great episode. What a good guest Jean-Guillaume was, he really enlightened us on the history of Tokaji. This I really appreciate because I have only heard of Tokaji from the Vayniacs and on your show. Very good “Thunder”!

I bet that phone number behind your head (212-966-4774) gets a lot of play after this airing.

Nice show Gary. I’ve been exploring sweet wines lately and will get some Tokaji soon.

Great show, great guest. You guys are really on a roll here recently!

QOTD: I LOVE TOKAJI … and you introduced me to it GV, so thank you. I have only had a few (they tend to be pricey), but I have loved everyone that I have had. I agree with JGP’s statement about Tokaji with other foods. Next time I drink one, it will be with cheese. Thanks for the tip!

  • castello

One petunia 2 petunia 3, 5 and 6. Will have to try it with sushi.
    Nice show!

  • I liked the show a lot, though the background noise was kind of ridiculous. Another stellar guest.
A great way to go into the weekend.

QOTD: I will try them with foods and report back. The best I can do.

Edwardo, are you listening? How can you NOT like the guest shows???????? So much education. So much getting us out of the American bubble. We’re great but there is a lot of greatness ALL around the world. Thank you for the global exposure Gary.

QOTD: Absolutely agree. I am a huge fan and practitioner of the sweet-savory theory of cooking. Balance is what you want in both food and wine.

  • ๐Ÿ˜€ A passionate frenchy and Gary in Toronto ๐Ÿ˜€ Good!
ร“, igen, a tokaij egy igazรกn finom bora
QOTD: Have had tokay with chevre mixed with parsly and walnuts. A tremendous combo. I think that Tokaij goes with almost anything, if the wine os of good quality.

  • no worries about the noise…it’s just like we are on the street enjoying the day with you.
hmmm….who’s that using the camera…I can just about see the reflection in the window. Trying to use the chalk board as a stabilizer? MOTT? Or one of the Vayner Media folks?

Have not had nearly enough exposure to Tokaji…must do something about that.

  • Jerry

Big, Big Bordeaux fan. A fantastic coup getting someone of such stature to appear on WLTV
But I gotta’ tell’ya, very unprofessional to do such a show on a sidewalk. What were you thinking! (I wonder what he was thinking) It wasn’t just the noise, which was bad enough but sitting there and expecting to have a normal conversation about a subject we all love was [is] way too much to expect. Sorry, thumbs down for me.

  • Andy

Great Episode Gary! Great Guest! Thanks..

  • FUUNNNY you should be tasting Tokaji!! JUST at LWS a few days ago talking about tokaji & the ones we had in france & the one I own! Small world… ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Very charming and knowledgeable guest! FABULOUS interview style! I love the Q & A with him, think you should do that with all of your guests! It reveals alot about the person and their life! The noise was distracting but was worth listening to for sure!

QOTD: Imagine the combo would taste delish…

  • aha…it is Mott!
@ Turks & Frogs Restaurant Tribeca

QOTD: Hmmm may take a little while to answer this one…we’ll see what I can scare up.

    Enjoy the weekend!

  • hear hear!

  • WoW Jerry I am so sorry you feel that way, guess this was a miss for you ๐Ÿ™ “real” is important to me, we had a nice time shared some good info I am super sorry you were so upset by this ๐Ÿ™ -gv

  • Phil Toronto

  • Sorry for the noise….

  • Thnx pal ๐Ÿ™‚

  • ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Sorry jack ๐Ÿ™ outside seemed fun and real ๐Ÿ™

  • ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Jerry

Had no problem with you, of course had no problem with Jean-Guillaume but ‘real’ can be accomplished on an outdoor patio of a prestigious restaurant or many other venue’s that would be far superior to the sidewalk. Sorry for the negativity but you can do better.

  • castello

    Boo to negativity!

  • Slushpuppy

Excellent boys! I wish you could have been eating fresh oysters with the tasting.
    Smell it first.TR

I feel like you pulled Jean-Guillaume out of a different time. You flux-capacitored a wine maker! Overall I know little of Tokaji but it has given me a different view on sweeter wines. So thanks Gary, I understand where Jerry is coming from but an episode like this thrown in every hundred or so isn’t the end of the world.

The traffic in the background and the wrangling chains were louder than the two of you. You might want to look into getting better mics. Sometimes even in your studio in can be difficult to hear your guests.

  • Phaser

I have tried a few Tokaji’s but never with a meal or food, only after dinner. They are a bit on the pricey side, but maybe, heck it’s something different! I can’t handle sea food, but the wife boss should be able to think something up.
ALso I liked how he “Talled to us” nice guest!

    Phaser

  • Understood and I apologize, will work on it

  • I appreciate it, I am allowed a mistake every 100, right?

  • Anonymous

Don’t really do sweet wines but I definitely want to try one of those . Great guest, although I think he knows more about the 2010 then he let on.

  • Im going with the ok on car noise… but no on the loud chains.

  • philoxera

    Proper Show….Proper Wines!

  • Anonymous

One of my fav types of wines these past 15+ years! QOTD — I don’t know about with oysters, but I love a glass of 3 puttonyos before dinner, or a 6 as dessert

  • No problem… I liked the vibe of the episode but I agree with the author of a post above mine that different microphones should have been used. However, the show endured because the content of this episode was meaty and interesting! Thanks GV.

  • SF BAY SWIMMER

Once I got over the noise I realized Jean-Guillaume could throw down some serious knowledge. Loved the story of Tokaji after the Tsarist revolution and what it meant to the quality of these wines. Glad to hear there is a resurgence of these wines and aim to pair these with Asian foods.

Look forward to Georgian wine show as Jean-Guillaume expressed an interest in the future of this region. Sasha would be great to have for this as these were such familiar wines during the Soviet period. It would be good to check in to see how this area is developing. They’re very easy to find at the Russian delis in my neighborhood.

  • The noise wasn’t a treat, but it wasn’t that bad. I wouldn’t sweat it. Jean-Guillaume Prats and the wines were too good to be ruined by some street noise.

  • NY Pete

    hey hey

  • As everyone has said, the noise was annoying at first but then we must understand you’re in NY so it goes with the territory.Wonderful guest, tons of historical knowledge which I liked quite a bit for my laid back Friday though it is ironic the Bolsheviks wipe out the aristocrats which wipes out their wine industry. Ehh, serves ’em right.QOTD: I could try it with oysters, scallops but have always associated Tokay with after dinner apertifs or desserts. Unfortunately, your wines are “Not Available” so I won’t be able to taste test.No predictions?Colts 34 Texans 24 (Manning will torch them on MNF)Jets 20 GB 17Cheers!GO COLTS!
