Gary Vaynerchuk meets with owner of Cos d’Estournel in Bordeaux to talk about a new project, Tokaj Hetszolo. They taste 3 different Tokajis from the estate and talk about the wine business (sorry about some of the background noise!).

Wines tasted in this episode:

2000 Hetszolo Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos
2001 Hetszolo Tokaji Aszu 6 Puttonyos

  • Could these be considered “Halloween Wines”? A nice Tokay with some candy corn?

    🙂

  • WineWoman

    Charming, informative guest.
QOTD: I have tried the Riesling with steak Combo and it does work well. I continue to experiment. Spicy Meatballs simmered in a sweet Riesling were phenomenal.

  • NY Pete

whatsa matter you guys don’t like NYC street vibes …

  • NY Pete

sounds like the wind was more of a factor than NYC …

Great show GV. Bruno’s son did good. I’ve had some Tokajis before and liked them. Not a big fan though as a food wine. I will try one with oysters. Jets 31-Packers 17

good show dude … keep bringing the thunder!

  • K is for Kate

The background noise got pretty ridiculous at points, but I have to admit the setting was kind of fun like getting to listen in on your conversation. I love eavesdropping on people at restaurants, but their conversations are rarely as interesting as this and the participants are almost never as charming as your guest.

  • norcalking

QOTD; Good call Castello, Sushi-Shashimi. Gotta try it!

I phoned the number. Couldn’t resist. It sounded like Jean answered the phone. Tribeca, nice. HA!

Your guest was right on with his restaurant picks, adds to his credibility. Some Tokaji at one of those two joints, life would be good.

A long time ago when I was first discovering wine a Sommelier at either Christian Brothers or Berringer told us not to hold the glass by the bowl, saying that the only one that wants your fingerprints up there are the FBI.
To this day I do not, do not, like holding any glass that way.

    Good show GV.

Gary, I like the sidewalk action because it’s what makes you who you are and it’s what makes your show authentic and reachable to the common man. I hope to see MORE! Outdoor patio of a prestigious restaurant? Come on bro…GO HOME with that shit Jerry. Keeping the vids raw is what makes them special. Keep it real Gary.

  • Wack due to not using lapel mics. Loved the content, and everything but just because you want to be raw doesn’t mean you need to give up on some quality production. (Aka getting lapels). If you want to do outdoor shows from now on, no need to apologize over and over it just means one thing … you MUST buy lapels. 😛

  • Good show ! Jean Guillaume Prats was an excellent guest, with an amazing historical knowledge of these wines and Bordeaux. You should have in back at WLTV for a “Bordeaux Blowout” ;o).

A couple of years ago I watched him in an interview with eric jerardi at Cos D’Estournel in Bordeaux France – he was great then too. Thanks GV.

  • Ever since Gary Vee gave Cos D’Estournel the top position in his 100 wines book I’ve bought two bottles, 2004 and 2007 vintages, both incredibly lush and aromatic (and quite expensive I might add).
    Love Tokaj wines.

QOTD: completely agree that Asian cuisine goes incredibly well with Tokajs… that said, we’ve had them with Chicken “Tostadas” and “Chiles Rellenos”, OMG, quite heavenly ( seriously, try this Mexican food/Tokaj pairing, it’s out of this world… )

Ballin’ at Turks & Frogs. Very nice Gary. Thanks for going to the guest if that’s what it took to get him. It was worth it, backround noise notwithstanding. You’d think that a guy like you could get a table inside. Never had Tokaji, but you have inspired me to try it. Will report back later.

Turn up the volume and quit wineing, (no pun intended)

  • DaveAll

need lapel mics. could have been a good show. best wishes!

  • DaveAll

too funny. was that NYC street vibes? could have been Cleveland… you sure? haha.

  • NY Pete

    btw …. 24-14 … J…E…T…S … JETS JETS JETS!

GV is taking way too much flak for the interview and the sound quality. I am always on his case for talking over the guest but this was one of his best. Sound was rough but not unreal. I think the heavy complainers must be trying to sneek a peek at work and got busted for turning it up. Love the guest, love the different location, hope to love the wine. I learn something with every epp. Thanks GV! Not usually into “sweet wines” but I will try these.

  • sideout

    Agreed

Really enjoyed the episode, guys. Thanks for being on the show, Jean-Guillaume!

QOTD: I love sweet white wines with seafood and I will definitely seek out some of your Tokaj Hetszolo to drink with oysters.

  • NJ Big Chris

    Great show. Great Guest.
Just had my first Tokaji 2 weeks ago. Chateau Henye 2000 Aszueszencia. Loved it. Big fan. Will be adding more to the rack soon.
I drink a lot of sweet wines. Mostly as as aperitif. Great w/ cheese’s and fruit. Great w/ seafood too. Spatlese and Scallop’s works for me. Anything spicy is awesome too. I agree w/ the mexican food comments below. But its gotta be hot to pair well for me. I’m talking unseeded shriveled Jalapeno’s here. Looking forward to trying one of the wines we saw today.

  • Varanids

Great show, loved the Cos d’Estournel 2000. I’ve had only one Tokaji, it was mostly all apples and honey and lacked much depth. I think I need to try another!

  • Simply great.

YOU ALREADY DRANK ‘EM??? Sad…they had such a promising future…to be taken at such a young age…alas, poor Cos; I knew him well…

Don’t sharks also swim in the bay?

Of course he does. Maybe he’ll take pity on the rich and only charge $12K a case for the ’10.

Hey John…have you heard about the Discovery Channel?

  • Congratulations for getting such a distinguished European guest on the show! Love how the interview skills make every show so engaging for the viewers. I am a huge fan of sweet wines and I so agree that the term “desert wines” should be banished.

  • Joseph

Gary, Sorry the sound sucks. I don’t always listen to just your show but browse and listen at the same time. I couldn’t this time because the wind and traffic was too much.
    Peace
    Joseph

  • Ain’t Laughing Like Anyone Now

    You’re Awesome Gary!

Qotd: ? (out of my league)

  • Anonymous

QOTD: I am a big Tokaji fan when recommending something interesting to customers to pair with dessert, but I have to agree with the spicy Asian food pairing. I cannot think of a much better complement to spicy Thai or other Asian seafood dish than a slightly sweet Gewerztraminer or even a fresher, 5-Puttonyos-or-less Tokaji. As for sweet wines with steak, that is an intriguing pairing that I have yet to explore… but I will have to soon!

  • Yes of course we did, it’s only wine after all.

  • TheGreatWazu

Very nice episode. I like the change of venue (once in a while). If you guys weren’t Mike’d up this time….I would next time. The street sound was cool but louder than your voices. It’s great to learn about wine too. Thanks. btw…if the Knicks didn’t try so many 3 point attempts they could have beaten Boston. The Knicks are better inside than they give themselves credit for bro!

  • For those of you who complained about the noise, check out this “classic” show. One of my favs.

  • Nobody says “passionate” better than Gary V. No worries about the background noise.

  • philoxera

Best show in a long time…Tokaji is one of personal favourites

  • John__J

Killer show. Jean-Guillaume was great and I love the Tokaji wines. They have better q.p.r. than nearly all the better known sweet wines out there.
qotd: I’ve done it with cheese, foie gras, desserts, but not oysters. I’m anxious to try that pairing now

  • Anonymous

I can’t stand the whining about the noise. This is what keeps it real. Listening is a skill and these whiners need to start using that skill. Gary, things were just fine and I didn’t even have the volumn turned up to 11. Keep doing what your doing Gary it is fantastic! Wait, I am typing to loud and can’t hear myself think so I better turn off the computer. Waaaaaa!!!!!!!!!

  • Prion911

This may be the best episode that I have seen in a very long time. And they are all very good! Informative, nerdy, inspiring, change of locale was nice and the noise was no problem. I am certainly going to check out Tokaji and get back with the QOTD.

  • Great show. Exciting to see another top name in the wine world invest in Tokaji wines. Hugh Johnson’s vision was brilliant back in the 1980s. People are still following. If you haven’t been to the Tokaj region, GO. Sure, it’s remote. The drive from Budapest is long. But the history, architecture, wines, vineyards, mountain views and people are surreal.

PS — love the “on the road” format, Gary.

Interesting show. Cos d’estournel is one of my favorite producers of all time! I have only tried Tokaji once or twice. I will be sure to try it again with seafood.

Great show…awesome guest! Proud to enjoy the ‘nerd’ quality of this episode…helps keep the passion for wine alive! Looking forward to tasting Tokaji.

Very interesting show. I spent 3 days in Budapest during September and had Tokaji each day. I drank it with cheese and snacks so I cannot comment on if it is good with seafood, but I brought a bottle of “5” back and will try it that way. Thanks for the excellent show.

Dude, how funny. This definately is a “Classic”! The “Big Ass Glass” sliding across the table had me on the floor. I score this “THUNDER +”!!!!

  • Thank You Sideout this means a lot to me

  • Just Jack

A lovely change of pace. Very knowledgeable guest and good questions. The street noise only added to the charm except for a few places where I couldn’t quite make out what he was trying to communicate. I think I got the gist of everything though and would have to give this episode a 91+. The only thing I would have liked to hear GV comment on more is the acid level. When it comes to sweet wines, I find that the acidity makes all the difference in the world to me between a stunning, balanced wine and a flabby mouth full of over ripe fruit and sugar.

QOTD: I have not had a Tokaji with seafood. But… I can’t resist a challenge so I will have to make that happen within the next week or so and see how well the theory holds up. I suspect it will work for my palate as I love Sauternes with oyster. (I very rarely pazz up any excuse for oysters.)
