    hey hey

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

    In the house!

  • What goes with a hotdog with mustard? The answer is obviously a Bavarian wheat beer. πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

    Top whatever!

  • Anonymous

I fear for you Melba. Watch your back dear πŸ˜‰

  • Nice show Gary. We did a Pinks Hot Dogs episode pairing it with Sake One sake, an Oregon Sake producer (http://www.wineweirdos.com).

After tons of bbqs on the back patio we have concluded Central Coast Syrah (Core, Hug, Booker, etc) goes great with Hebrew National Hot Dogs.

  • castello

    top 7?

  • I hear you JF. Got my Teflon back shield on. πŸ˜›

QOTD: I’m not dogmatic about this one. I like mustard and sauerkraut, but I like other things too. Chili is good. NYC Papaya joint style, with those onions in whatever liquid that is. Seattle style, with cream cheese and whatever else is on hand (no joke – try it). All in all, it’s more about the high quality hot dog for me than it is about the toppings. I could have amazing toppings, but that 7-11 hot dog that’s been in the roller thing for 4 days still makes me a little ill.

  • TheGreatWazu

Ya can’t beat a dirty dog with those red onions from the Sabrett truck! Here’s one…Cream Cheese, Scallions and a Dog wrapped in Bacon…KILLER. Clayhouse Adobe Red is spectacular with hot dogs but nothing beats Harry M. Stevens beer on tap during a cold Giant/Jets game. BTW your ability to taste is a freaking mazing.

  • And Malbec wins again. This ain’t no Bunk Ass Malbec.

QOTD – ALWAYS with raw onions and yellow mustard. Sometimes with chili if the chili is good. Sometimes with saurkraut if the hotdog is more of a sausage-like dog as opposed to kust a regular hot dog. NEVER with ketchup and absolutely NEVER with that sweet relish crap.

  • jc9683

Onions and mustard! Legit dog! Malbec is the varietal of choice at bbqs but a nice pinot gris or unoaked chard is always welcome. I like the simplicity of the episode, but in no means “dumbing” it down. well played. As always, thanks

  • NY Pete

    spicy brown mustard.

  • Nick Waters

Spicy mustard, and a whole wheat bun.

  • Great show! You should get back to these pairing episodes! Remember the cereal!? Maybe do a fried chicken episode?

Gotta go with mustard…chilli and cheese when the time is right

  • Not a MΓ€rzen/Oktoberfest style beer? I figure pretzels and mustard. Or am I being a dork head.

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

Another classic pairing show, GV! Still doesn’t beat the cereal episode. QOTD: Ketchup, Mustard (more lately), relish, and onions

  • Larry

At a ball game with a beer. Mustard, onions, and relish.

  • Larry

But what wine would go with a Sonoran Dog?

  • StL Italian

QotD: I like mine wrapped in bacon with sauteed onion, horseradish, mustard, ketchup, sweet pickle relish. And GV, good luck to your Jets! (I can say that as the Rams don’t get to play you guys!) ohhhh, first post, not a lurker anymore!

  • Jorgen UK

Great show Gary, I love italian bbq and they have a great fennel salsiccia that goes very well a medium bodied Chianti or if you want more fruit a Aglianico based wine,

QOTD: Stroong sweet mustard and raw onion

  • Anonymous

Well, I can die now that I know what to pair with a hot dog πŸ˜‰

QOTD: I should go back and find the ep where you asked this same question and just refer you to that ep but, hell, I’m too lazy to do all that work πŸ™‚ Yellow mustard and sometimes diced onion.

  • Neil

QOTD: 1.) Mustard & Sauerkraut on a Polish; Mustard, Ketchup & Sweet Relish on a Hot Dog.

  • QOTD: mustard and relish. Great episode! I love the episodes that focus on food and wine together!

  • Slushpuppy

You asked this qotd not that long ago. I’ve had them all different ways, and by far the best dog is Chicago Style! David Berg wiener on S.Rosen’s poppy seed bun. Yellow mustard, dill pickle relish, thin sliced tomato, chopped onion, celery salt, and pepper.
Sorry Mott, but ketchup ruins the taste for most people unless you are in the under 12 category. Smell it first.TR

Damn, I forgot to comment on how impressed I was at the big assed budget for the show. Man, ONE (1) (don’t they sell them for like 2 for 79-cents) 7-11 hot dog. Clearly UPTOWN tonight!

  • Haha good episode. This is funny because I just bought hot dogs for the first time in a long time yesterday…now to find some Malbec. Have you ever done a wine pairing with mac n cheese episode?

  • VIaDomitia

Relish and onion! As for pairings, I would think that what matters is not the dog itself, but the condiments. Afterall, the condiments have more taste than the dogs!!

  • TitanicJack

Nice! Wish you had gotten a little better dog though. QOTD: with lots of mustard, chili and onions. Yum. Pair with a Mollydooker Carnival of Love because carnivals and hot dogs always go together.

  • Terrandabo

I too am in the cult of mustard, so first I pour on the mustard. But just to control the ‘tard, I add a little bit of ketchup. Then, if they’re available I rock the onions. I love that onion dispenser doo-hicky at Costco. Maybe a little relish, and if the mood strikes a slap of sauerkraut.

I wouldn’t even eat a hot-dog if it had a condom on it.

  • Anonymous

This joke brought to you by comic and satirist Bill Maher.

  • Vincentscudder

QOTD: Dijon musturd, relish, onions, and hot peps. NO KETCHUP!

  • castello

    Ketchup mustard relish!

  • SniffySmith

QOTD: Depends on the dog. If I’m gettin’ down on a 7-11 special, just gimme the yellow mustard (maybe some relish if im in the mood). If you’re talking about the gourmet, sausage type deals, bring on the spicy mustard, onions, and coleslaw.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: “med det hele” as we say in Denmark (all included), so that would be ketchup, mustard, remolade, raw onions, fried onions and pickled cucumbers. Something like this:

  • Andyhagle

    Mustard , onions & chilli

  • Frisco Grapes

QOTD: 2 ways… 1. Chili, cheese, onions and french’s mustard. 2. Sauerkraut and dijon mustard.

  • Frisco Grapes

LOL! Something about the way that weiner looks, scares me.

  • Frisco Grapes

Oh, and I like my dogs cooked on the open grill, blackened on the outside and slightly split open.

  • QOTD – I grew up as a ketchup and onions kind of guy, but after a number of years in Chicago, I have to say that Chicago style is where it is at: pretty much everything on it EXCEPT ketchup.

  • Frisco Grapes

Carnival of Love and a dog? LOL! That’s 2 ends of the cost spectrum.

  • Interesting show. QOTD: I love lots of mustard, tons of raw white onion and maybe a little dab of ketchup.

  • Ktbyrn2

Q.o.t.D.- taco style: a dab of chili, crushed tortilla , tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, and sour cream all on a sesame seed bun. Just had it before I watched the show.

Has he ever done an episode where he makes these bizarre food combinations?
Popcorn with too much butter so you throw a few apples in there, I laughed out loud.

  • scottEJ

If it’s a high-quality kosher beef dog, give it to me plain on a steamed bun. Otherwise, mustard or mustard w/onions.

Thanks. I’ve had the Luigi Bosco from prior vintages and they’ve always been fairly dependable. The Beringer…meh, meh, meh for the price. Love the Languedoc.

  • shoreguy

Ketchup on a hotdog is like putting ice in your cab. Mustard and almost anything else works.

  • Anonymous

I like my dogs Chicago style (with no onions, though). The combo of the dog, mustard, pickle with the kick of the sport peppers makes for a tasty dog.

  • Tom T.

Sourkraut and mustard. Sometimes chili or relish to make things different. IMO the Chard and the Syrah were too expensive for hot dogs. Maybe you should have tasted the dogs with only under $15 wines.

  • Anonymous

    Hmmm. okay.

qotd; When it tastes like grilled swordfish.
