  • Helmet took a nice dousing there on that last rinse.
QOTD: Mustard and (green) relish. When we were kids we actually ate hot dogs with crunchy peanut butter on the bun. It was delicious but I don’t think I would be into that now. I’ll have to re-try it.

  • Len F

Can’t wait to see the next food pairing.

QOTD – Chicago dog dragged through the garden!

  • norcalking

    Isn’t a pickled cucumber a pickle ?

  • LurkerKing

QOTD: Straight Dog gotta be Mustard and Onions. Only do chili if its a Coney Island Dog from Lafayette Coney Island in Detroit, MI. (Best Coney Island in the world).

This episode is approaching maximal levels of thunder like Hulk Hogan picking up Andre The Giant, or a young Vaynerchuk in his prime. 🙂

  • WineWoman

Nice selections of wines, with or without food.

QOTD: Usually plain or with Gulden’s mustard.

  • norcalking

    Gary,

I’m with you on two things; Lot of Bad Ass Melbac out there. So much so that I tend to stay away from it altogether. Also, I LOVE mustard! Spicy brown, sweet hot, dijon, there’s some sweet hot Hawaiian that kills.

QOTD; I can’t eat hot-dogs anymore. Everything but the squeal as they say, including nitrates and nitrites. Ugh. Sucks to get old, my body is my temple, and all that.

  • Beth

Thanks Gary! QOTD: ketchup, mustard, onion veggie dog!

  • QOTD: NO KETCHUP! A traditional Chicago style Vienna Hot Dog, mustard, relish, onions, tomatoes, pickle, hot pepper, celery salt! YUMMMMMMMMMY!! on a regular bun no poppy seed!

  • nice comparison!

Just discovered WLTV a week or two ago via a lecture of Gary’s linked to TED.com. Loving the show. Gary, come out to Australia and do some shows here!

QOTD: Tomato sauce (ketchup, only not as sweet).

  • Anonymous

QOTD — usually just ketchup and a little mustard; sometimes ‘kraut, mustard, and a little ketchup or, if I don’t mind making a mess, mustard, chili, cheese, onions, and kraut, but you need a knife and fork (and lots of napkins) for that!

  • Hotspur75

Pickles, mustard, mayonnaise, roast onions. Definitely beer-food. I’d try some crémant to gulp down the mustard. Or go with semi-matured C9dP blanc. If it has to be red, I might try some Chinon.

  • The action figures are back! I like chili dogs with mustard-no onions.

  • elvindeath

I think I’m going to have to hunt down some of the Mas Julien.

As for the QOTD …. being from Detroit, there’s only one way to enjoy a hot dog … Coney Island style. Chili, sharp yellow mustard and a pile of sweet onions on top.

And as for the chalkboard, Gary … you can relax. No way the Lions win 2 in a row. This city would explode if we strung a couple wins together.

You could have at least gotten a good dog. I mean, $25 wine with a $1 dog….. A nathan’s or hebrew national wouldn’t have broken the bank right? Also, I would have gone with a really acidic white to cut through the fat of the dog. Or perhaps a young beaujolais.

  • A fun, fun show and always wondered what paired well with a hot dog. I had the Bosca Malbec not too long ago and thought it was delish. My notes were very similar to yours.

QOTD: My perfect dog would have mustard and sauerkraut and maybe some onions if they would fit. #2 option would be chili with onions. I never have ketchup on my dog. Hate it.

P.S. I would worry too about playing the Lions at Ford Field. I watched them last week spank the Skins and force Shanahan to put in Grossman for the 2 minute drill! Hilarious bunch of buffoons here in DC. It will be fun to watch Revis Island vs Megatron. Good luck

    Cheers!

QOTD: I love my Chicago Style Hot Dogs!!! Onions, tomatoes, hot green relish, cucumbers/pickles, mustard, and those little spicy peppers make an outstanding hot dog. It’s a sin to garnish your tube meat with anything other than mustard!

I can’t wait to go to Tucson to have myself an true Sonoran Dog!

  • Lots of brown, spicy mustard and if I can throw some sauerkraut on. Have to confess I have not tried to pair wine with that. The profiles are making me wonder about German Riesling though.

qotd: I enjoy a naked beef frank on a steamed bun…maybe some sriracha. There is a joint down the street that does some pretty creative and delicious stuff though. My fav is the Seoul Dog. Beef frank with Kimchi and chili paste.

  • question of the day
id eat my hot dog with anything, gotta change it up once in a while.

  • You are correct sir! Ketchup is for Kids!

  • QOTD: 1) With just Dijon
    2) With just French’s
    3) With either of the above aforementioned and kraut.
    4) The works

MOTT”S answer was very disappointing…and leads me to believe he was the kid who still ate Elmer’s glue well into high school when no one was looking.

  • Troytee

    QOTD: Mustard

Liked the comment about B.A.M jumping the shark. I feel a little Aussie Shiraz fakey wine and quality slip coming. Malbec could easily become a homogenized ‘brand” style wine. Watch out Argentina… save the quality.

    Jets 23-Lions 20

  • QOTD: depends on the situation:

Fenway Park – just mustard, or even plain
    Cookout: ketchup, mustard, relish
Dog Stand: Everything they have, whatever it may be

  • Tonyj25

Depends on the dog, but NEVER KETCHUP.

  • Anonymous

    Fun show, thanks!
QOTD: Mustard and relish. Sauerkraut if it’s the real deal, but it’s not often I find that. Wonder if that’s what I answered the last time you asked this?

  • King of “Pape”

Smothered in cornmeal and deep fried on a stick

  • Nice!
QOTD: I like plenty of mustard on the bottom and a toasty bun…

  • Anonymous

Restore the Roar……….if I worked across the street from a 7-11, it would be frozen Cokes all day long, and question of the day is mustard and ketchup, but if I’m in the homeland of Detroit it’s all about the Coney (chili, onions, mustard and cheese).

  • Great episode… next time you’ll need to try the DOG w/ some chili and cheese…

QOTD: 2 ways… the previously mentioned chili/cheese, or mustard, relish and chopped onions…

  • PisPaul Blankces0332003

QOTD: Hot dog and mustard. Watched your episode with a glass of Malbec,2008 Crios with pizza. Enjoyed and thank you.

  • Pisces0332003

no idea with first 3 letters in front of my name. Wow.

  • Noleesk

    la belle province style!

  • noshooz

Drowning in ketchup! I paired hot dogs with a pinot noir once, it worked out pretty nicely.

  • RobinC

    QOTD: with mustard and rellish
Familial relationships are confusing sometimes but isn’t your brother-in-law already married?

  • A Märzen would work fine of course, but the classic, all-season champ is the regular Weissbier. This coming from a former resident of Munich, where a proper breakfast is white sausage, pretzels, sweet mustard and a wheat beer.

  • Anonymous

Hot diggity dog!!! I was just in today and picked up a malbac… along with your last 3 bottles of Pahlmeyer. Nice extension to the wine room…. 🙂

QOTD: I like a hot dog with potatoes, onions and ketchup. Or cheese and ketchup with mustard. Or sauerkraut with all of the above or at least one of each. But since I’m now on The Fresh Diet I can’t have a hot dog….. 🙁

  • Dusanmal

QOTD: Mostly just with mustard. However, I like to sometimes remind myself of country where I grew up: try hotdog with horseradish or with hot ajvar(ayvar)… Where am I from?

Side note: you mentioned that white wine can age in this episode. To connect to previous episode QOTD – this Summer I had great education by Sommelier at Victoria&Albert at Disney Orlando. I noticed very odd entry in their wine list: Santenay Clos Du Passetemps Baron De La Charriére 1995 … First it is white Santenay and I haven’t seen those but as excellent reds. However, more puzzling was that it is 15 years old white… We ended not trying it, but still some talk with the expert about what happens to aged white wine was interesting… Maybe in some future WLTV GV will try some quite old white and tell us more.

    OOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHH THIS????!!!!???!!

  • John__J

GARY! I wish I knew this episode was coming. I’m telling you right now that Gewurtz is an awesome pairing when eating hotdogs, you need to check that out. Trust me.

Qotd (2): You’ve asked this one before, but I go one of two ways: Chili and Cheese, or sauerkraut, relish, onion, mustard.

    Either way, the Gewurtz KILLS.

  • Gregory

QOTD: Mustard, Kraut, and Celery Salt; you got to have the Celery Salt. I can enjoy other ingredients, but these are the basics.

  • Smarshall

WTF reduced to the redickulus. I love it. Next time I’m at a wine shop in NJ across the street from a 7/11 I’ll give it a try. Until then I will pair it with Slurpee it takes a lot less effort and I’m outa there for under 3 bones. I’ve had tons of Slurpees better that the wines I can find at that price.

  • Agree with the bacon wrap. Make that a horseradish mayo and a bacon fat-fried jalapeno and I’m in heaven!

Btw, my first post as well. Bacon brings people together!

This show is on the good to know list. great show, i like it.
    QOTD: Ketchup. keep it simple.

  • Alex T

QOTD: More of a Brat guy, in which case I go mustard, maybe onion and lil’ kraut. With hot dogs, I go straight ketchup, but it’s usually because I feel the need to have at least 3 in one sitting. Like orangebottle…keep it simple.

  • Anonymous

fun show. I’m with Mott. Ketchup only.

  • HugeneOR

Surprised you didn’t go for a pinot to pair with a hotdog.

QOTD: usually go for the classic ketchup and mustard. But if you want something a little more out there, jalepeños and cream cheese. Try it and tell me that it’s not delicious.

  • drewgoblue

I like my hot dog with mustard and beer at a ball game! Not sure I’d want to pair it with wine to be honest. It’s like pairing Beer with Lobster; you can do it, but wouldn’t you be better off with Champagne or Sancerre?

  • ALLAN

    Top 100!!! YAY!!!!! 😛

    Very fun show.

    Qotd: I’ll go for everything.
