It has been declared not legally possible to not like Moscato d’Asti. That said, I, and many others, find it delicious, but it is not for me. Sweet wines generally aren’t, but I always have a few on hand, for dad’s taste, or for any guest, dinner, or event that might call for a light, pleasant or sweet, quick taste to change gears, or signify some moment in family time, or whatever. If you take one to a friend’s house, they’ll never say no ( complicated problems, notwithstanding). So, with that in mind, and that I don’t buy sweets with MY drinking in mind, I try to get real quality/taste/ balance (acidity is a must , here). There’s generally some German offerings, whether eiswein of even indiscriminate grapes, or Riesling Auslese, or better, or various Mediterranean Muscats. But in Asti, one that always leaps to mind is Michele Chiarlo Nivole (375mL). Not the bubbly kind, but def. w/ frizzante, and exquisite complexity. Well above the standard, average offerings.

  • just u wait and see ๐Ÿ™‚

Good show. I’ve never been able to get into Moscato d’Asti. I like white dessert wines and dry whites like Rieslings, but Moscato d’Asti has always seemed like a middle ground between the two and I’ve never really seen the point. If I want sweet, I go sweet. If I want dry, I go dry. To my palate, when you go halfway between the two you lose the best parts of both. I guess it often lacks the acidity which I feel keeps well-made ice wines from becoming cloying.QOTD: I definitely move even more towards reds than usual as the winter wears on. I also find myself appreciating dessert wines more, particularly during the holidays, which might have a lot to do with the general abundance of sweet things around the holidays. Last year I visited Quebec in early November and came back with a few bottles of ice cider which I served with pie at Thanksgiving. Big success. Speaking of which, let’s get that secret pack up ASAP, eh? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • give it to me!

Indifferent to, but can enjoy Sparkly Chenin Blanc a la Loire, Frizzante Lambrusco, well made Sparkly Shiraz, Constantin Frank Celebration Semi-Dry, Mumm Napa Sparkly Burgundy ( I forgot what they called it a dozen years ago, winery only),even Cava, Semi-Seco… all different degrees of good.

  • NY Pete

no … rewind and listen to the QOTD again.

  • Another great show! These wines are light and fun!
    QOTD: Moscato d’Asti!!!

  • TLove

QOTD – Malvasia. I love cheese in the fall with dessert and I am a huge fan of a heavy, complex raisin-driven Malvasia to cover the sweeter side of dessert. Also up for Greek Assyrtico as well.

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

    HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY!!!

Have been looking for a Md’a to pick up because I hear so much hype surrounding them. And it’s time to get off of Drake, because he is getting played out. Just say NO to Young Money!

QOTD: I’m a Champagne guy to be honest. But I do love some Saunternes!

PS – Don’t you love how Gary says “Barbaresco”? haha

  • Stepping up to say I’ve had Moscato d’Asti though it’s been a while. Fun show. After my Cru Beaujolais weekend just have to say thanks for keeping it fresh and pushing people in new directions.

QOTD: I love my bubbles dry. Just the perfect way to start an evening and almost nothing you can’t pair food wise. Just started wondering about sweet. I’m thinking it is time to try some Sauternes again, it’s been a while.

    Fun episode.
I am a big fan of Jacques Selosse, unquestionably expensive but for a treat, say somebody was turning 35…

  • I do not think i’ve had one, but definitely want to try. Wish the wine selection was better around here
favorite sweet wine’s probly a good sauternes or riesling, sparkler would maybe be a cava.

Yes… the widely available Martini & Rossi Asti Spumante. But I just got an order from WL last week & I picked up a bottle of the first wine, glad to see you liked it (especially since it sold out!) Funny, the exact same thing happened to me with the Villa des Anges cab!

    QOTD: Any authentic eiswein

  • jrouss

I LOVE moscato d’astis. they are so much better than any champagne or prosecco

  • LOL!

  • liko sf

I like the La Spinetta Moscato D’asti. I used to work at a restaurant that would sell the splits and I would always recommend it with dessert.

QOTD: I enjoy all bubbles, particularly Sorelle Bronca prosecco. We served it at our wedding instead of champers.

  • jjt

You know, for inexpensive, dry and tasty autumn bubbles, it’s hard to beat some Blanc de Blancs like Boyer Brut…

  • Globex

great show, made my mouth water to try some. I’ve never had Moscato.

QOTD: I was getting ready to put my order in later this week for some of J. Lasselle’s, and Veuve Fourny & Fils champagnes, but I think you just showed me a way to save a ton of cash but cutting that order in half and supplement the other half with some of this rapper drink.

  • Ha! I just heard that the RC Affinity is a great wine for the price. Will have to try it, Thx. Oh and whatever the deal is on Nov 16 – I’m intrigued.

    Gary ! Bro!
Now your talkin my Wine! I posted a while back about Moscato D’Asti.
I bought 5 Cases of IL Conte D’Alba Moscato D’Asti. I loved this Appetizer/ Desert Wine. This one’s just 5.5% compared to the ones you tasted. I was told this is the Original Opici Winery like the one we had here in Altaloma (Was Cucamonga back then) CA. years ago. I just looked at my Cellar and found another Moscato D’Asti by IL Duca Imperiale. Funny, I see now they are both Bottled by CA.I.VI.P. Spa S. Stefano Belbo-Italia. Imported by Maddalena Brands LA. CA. (San Antonio Winery). Great price, I hate to say because last year they ran out. It’s only $8.35 a 750ml. Don’t tell anyone, I only have 4 bottles left so I gotta get me some more! Better than a Dry Champagne. Just Tasty! Thanks Gary for bringing the Moscato to the Table.

QOTD – Favorite sparkling wine I’ve ever tried was the Lingenfelder Satyr NV sparkling riesling. Lots of fun to try different things!

  • Loved the energy. Go NY-area! I’m totally used to Moscato, as my ILs LOVE it. As was said, the lot of us polish off a few bottles as aperitifs or early meal beverages.

QOTD: Love me some Cava, though Winecrazy’s suggestion of Taittinger Rose is great. Beer season is porter/stout/winter ales, though I have to admit I was hitting the fruit and sour beers lately. Just got to have the latest vintage of New Belgium’s La Folie with my fellow beer bloggers at #BBC10, which is DELISH.

  • tom A

    OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH THIS!!!!????!!!

  • Scottlmatthews

Moscato d’astis is a fun time, but champagne is a serious party!

QOTD-E & E Pepper Shiraz (Australian) Sparkling-an amazing red sparkler that screams for the cold autumn days.

  • Anonymous

    I’ll admit it!

QOTD: During this time of the year, I would drink a riesling cuvee by itself and for bubbles I would probably go with Blanc de Blanc…an odd choice but Blanc de Blanc just comforts me in the winter time.

  • Anonymous

Haha, nice energy Gary. But c’mon, you’re a Scorpio? I would have gone with Aries.

QOTD: Have had Moscato d’Asti. I’m more into Brachetto d’Acqui. The ladies looooove it.

  • Anonymous

SOMEBODY is riding high off a late game comeback! Yes, Revis Island is back in full effect.

    Never had a Moscato d’Asti

    QOTD: Dry Sparkling Rose

  • My Italian clients love their Moscato D’Asti’s, they have something ot celebrate almost every week, it’s insane how much they drink (they love everything bubbly, and of course averna and grappa), and I’m thrilled that they always count me into their celebrations.

QOTD: we’re drinking Cava for bubbly right now, have at least four of them so it’s about a months worth. For sweet wines we have in cellar Malaga, Dulce de Parras and Sauternes.

  • Texture of the wine is what Moscato are all about. For my pallet this are the greatest wines in the world, due to the fact that this wines are like cream soda. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you Garry for an other great show!!!

I have had a few Moscato d’Asti in my day, and I love to pair them with both lighter savory dishes, as well as less sweet fruit-centric desserts.

QOTD: I don;t think there is a better wine to pair with the cornucopia of dishes on the Thanksgiving table, or for my palate on any given day in general, than Rose Champagne. However, for value lately, I’ve been scouting out Champagne-quality Franciacorta (both Brut and slightly off-dry) that often can be had for half the price of comparable wine from France’s legendary sparkling wine region. Find one while the lack of consumer knowledge decreases and these wines start to command the prices they deserve!

AND- GARY, DO A FRANCIACORTA EPISODE SOOOON!

  • I agree on the Brachetto d’Acqui comment. Love the stuff. Also love Hana Hou Hou Shu sparkling sake.

  • SniffySmith

I guess my hip-hop culture is dated, I thought it was all about poppin’ the crissy-crissy!

QOTD: Not much of a bubbles guy. There’s nothing wrong with them palate-wise, it’s just too easy for me to go overboard and wake up hating life. If pressed, I would say prosecco. Usually I stick with port, late harvest wines, or just red wine and semisweet chocolate.

gary: can you PLEASE do a sit-down interview with mr. christopher mott?????

    QOTD: sparkling shiraz is good.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: For sweet wines, I really like Coteaux du Layon but it all depends on what I am serving with the wine (foie gras, chocolate, cheese, etc.). For bubbles, I love crรฉmant but I don’t think you can beat a good grower’s champagne.

  • Toewee

I agree with another poster. Interview with MOTT!!!! Sweetish wine Gewurtz.

I’m going to move some bug juice today……….

  • laurensNL

Ordered some Vajra Moscato for christmas dinner ;). Great stuff!

QOTD: Apart from Moscato I like Blanquette de Limoux (great value for money), Coteaux du Layon but also champagne for special moments.

  • DAveALL
