    Happy Birthday Gary!

Side QOTD: Because there is such saturation in the wine industry in California I believe it can be a place for value. I mean there will be some wines that they will refuse to drop price on. But I don’t see the reverence for California Chardonnay in the public anymore. Not that California makes the worst Chardonnay, we know thats not true. But California has lost its Judgement of Paris Pizazz! If Washington and Oregan can weigh in just as well as California, California is going to have to play ball.

Official QOTD: 63% Red, 30% White, 4% Rose, 3% Sparkling

  • What happens to all the “un-drank” wine after the show? As a proud member of the ckc, I’m here to say that no wine should go “un-drank.” It’s just not right.

Value area will be Lake County. It’s logical because it’s just North of Napa and the land is a bit cheaper. It’s all a matter of time before Lake County blows up like the other appellations in CA.
For now you can find gems (especially Cab) like the Obsidian.

QOTD: 60% Red 35% white 4% Rose 1% Sparkling. I love making sangria out of Pedroncelli’s Zinfandel Rose.

Side QOTD: Yes, California can be good value. You just have to know which producers understand how to make a good $15-20 dollar bottle of red. OR areas that have undervalued, high quality wines 🙂

  • NY Pete

love the no editing policy … ROTFLMAO.

  • Adam C

70% red. 20% white. 10% bubbles. I do think that Cali should be puttting out a lot of good wine under 20 bucks, its hard to find though. I get excited when I find a good one for cheap, but almost expect it from some parts of France.

  • DaveAll

I was just going to ASK for a secret pack this evening! GREAT NEWS! Ordered as soon as I saw it in the links, now I’ll listen to the episode. woohoo! Then to plan my neighborhood party! (we put you on wall projection and enjoy the wines)

  • TheGreatWazu

Although the game was mondo-exciting, the Jets are quazi good but they find ways to win; The Giants are better birthday boy. 70% Red/ 20% Champaigne/ 8% White/ 1% Rose/ 1% Welches with a cork. Cali charges more just ’cause they can, like Toyota used to but they aren’t the only game any more. South Africa is very Caliesque and for half the price. Nice episode. Glad you had a nice birthday.

72% Red 19% white 4% desert 3% bubbles 2% rose.Plenty of value plays in CA… melville, tablas creek, chappellet mountain to name a few off the top…

    My Pie Chart:
    88% Red
    7% White
    4% Sparkles
    1% Rose

Can California be a value play? Yes.

  • QOTD-side: Sure it can be, pretty much anywhere but Napa.

  • SniffySmith

Happy belated Gary! Today is actually my fathers’ bday, kind of a cool coincidence.

QOTD: 60% Red, 35% White, 5% Sparkling – Sparkling going up due to Giants WS victory! I hate to say this, but I’ve never had a rose I liked. Open to suggestions to change that.

SQOTD: I think you hit it on the head recently when you said that Zin may be the last frontier for value in CA wines. Pinot and Cab prices are ridiculous, and other varietals, esp. Chard, are creeping up there too.

  • 66% red
    28% white
    5% rose
    1% sparkling

  • Anonymous

    QOTD #1: 65% red; 30% white; 4% sparkling; 1% rose.

Side QOTD: I think Napa Valley will have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the value wine market. Having grown up in that area, there is this attitude that their wines ‘deserve’ a higher price. There are many other wine areas in California that have provided really good wine at value prices.

  • sQOTD: red: 75% white: 20% sparkling: 2% rose 1%
I think value can be found in california but there isn’t enough of it to call it a value play. Some of the most over-priced wines I have had have been from california but I’ve had a few values.

  • DaveAll

QotD: 60% red, 30 white, .04% rose, and 7% sparkling, 3% port, 5% fruit – yes, more than 100 cause I drink too much. hahaha.
What i’d like to know someday – qotd: where do you buy (percentages) your wines? grocery store, wine store, winery, online, etc. Would be interesting to know of the vanernation where they buy… and has it changed as a result of listening to you 950 episodes? (i’ve watched them ALL) some twice.

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

Zin is where it’s as for me!

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

    I’m going to go with:

    60% Red – Decreasing
    35% White – Increasing – THANKS, GARY!
    4% Sparkling
    1% Rose

I like the value you brought, inadvertently, to the table. Double-deuces on some Cali Cab’s and Chard’s…hard to beat. Just like Sniffy said below, Cali can bring back QPR’s with great quality Zin. Love me some Lytton Springs.

Good looks on the Thanksgiving pack, bro! I’m grabbing it now!

  • DaveAll

side qotd: let’s see… jug wine, Gallo, etc. sure, California can be and has been a value wine. :*)

  • Anonymous

QOTD: 99% red, 0.9% white, 0.1% other (if red or white is not available) 😉
SQOTD: Yep, avoid Napa, go to Paso Robles or Santa Barbara among a few others

    Happy late Bday!

  • MTmax

Of course there are great values in California. There are great values everywhere.
(Check out Rabbit Ridge from Paso Robles – great value California wines)

    QOTD – 80% Red, 15% White, 4% Rose, 1% Sparkling
California, like most places, depends on the location. Napa, no. Paso yes. Lodi yes. Monterey yes. Temecula – no

  • Cybertlh

    QOTD: Fall/Winter – 99% RED, 1% White. Spring/Summer 80% Red, 15% White, 5% Rose.

It’s all about the food with White and Rose. Less seafood and roast chicken on the grill in cold weather…

  • Anonymous

81% red, 17% white, 1% sparkling, 1% rose. Thank you CT.

  • QOTD: 75% Red, 15% White, 9% Sparkling, 1% Rose.

SQOTD: Of course California can represent value in wine. I feel the trend might be rather high to favor the big name wineries but there are a lot of quality wine producers–by sheer number of wines produced in the massive state of CA–in the lower price ranges that fly under the radar. A lot of value (and quality) that may be overlooked in favor of the iconic wineries.

  • scottEJ

Nice little lineup. Try the Alta Maria Chard. if you have it. It’s the sister of the pinot you did a few weeks back.

QOTD: 35% red, 35% white, 15% pink, 15% sparkling. Sure, there’s good enough priced wines coming out of Cali. However, I’ve found it easier to spot when actually going there and not relying on what the local stores provide.

  • handymom

CT tracks me at 73% red and 17% white. But truth be told, the majority of the whites are served to guests who prefer whites.

  • jjt

Well, value is relative, and if the Euro has a couple more weeks like the last one, there may be some very price competitive French stuff out there…

  • Anonymous

    QOTD-
    75% red
    13% white
    10% sparkling
    2 % rose’
QOTD #2- CA is kicking and screaming its way into value. There is plenty of unsold wine to be had for less than the original prices currently.
