I think it is hard for California to be value after they got used to being upscale. They may need to try harder to attract buyers in these times though. I do not buy much California wines except for a couple of favorite wineries that are good values. My wine drinking is about 75% red, 10% white, 5% sparkling, 5% rose, and 5% dessert. I need to drink more of the 5% wines next year.

California has plenty of value plays. Many well-known producers get together and do value projects, many second-label wines and if you visit CA, you can scout out many lesser known areas and small producers making phenomenal wines. Or visit Wine Library…

  • California’s Central Coast offers great value. Oversupply of wine has also dropped prices.

QOTD: Depends on food, time of year and company. At the current moment:
    55% red,
    10% white,
    20% sparkling
    13% dessert/fortified,
    2% rose.

*Sparkling wine is extremely food friendly, & with the holidays comes plenty of desserts!

Drinking, and enjoying, more whites than ever. More opportunities, less red meat. Would have done a pie chart, but I can only have so much pie and I’m saving that for Thanksgiving. Under the circumstances, a “bar” graph seemed more appropriate.

    Great show.

About 40% Red, 40% White, 15% Sparkling and 5% Rose.

You can definitely find value wines in all appellations of CA. including Napa, you’ve gotta head off the beaten path and look for them.

  • QOTD: 82% red, 15% white, 3% sparkling, 0% rose

Side QOTD: I think every major wine producing region has at least SOME good values. It’s just a matter of sifting through all of the wines that are not such good values, and of course, the more wine any growing region produces, the harder it will be to find those good values, generally speaking.

side QOTD: Given what I’ve seen on this episode, yes, it could be. But generally, for quality wine, not yet.

  • Wow. Looks like you all need to drink more sparkling wine! I’m so hot on the bubbles right now. Mine probably breaks down like this:

    White – 45%
    Bubbles – 29%
    Red – 25%
    Rose – 1%

Well, I’d lump on-line and local together, and get
    wine store 74%
    winery 13.5%
    grocery 12.5%

About 1/3 of the ‘wine store’ has been WL!

  • Wadesh

95% reds…although I have to comment that since I’ve been watching your show, I’ve tried more whites. It would have been 100% red a year ago

Thanks Gary. I was starting to get a little shakey, the jitters were setting in. Nice show! A quality start of my week. I agree with you on the Cali wines. I think there are a few nice value plays there, but on an overall they are still heavy handed on their price points.

The Jets again got lucky in OT, two weeks in a row. WOW!

You’re getting totally soft in your old age. Three California wines at 89, 90,and 91? Like the Loew’s commercial, “UNHEARD OF!” πŸ˜‰

Would like to up the white and bubbles, probably the expense of Red. Rose is my ‘on a desert island and could can only have one kind’ wine.

Double check your label for Obsidian Ridge Winery – I think you will find it comes from Lake County, CA – not Napa (The ‘North Coast’ appellation is a tip off).
    70% red, 20% white, 9% sparkling, 1% Rose

Assuming my restaurant/bar drinking habits mirror my CT account, I drink 69.5% Red, 25.7% White, 4.8% Rose. Some of all three categories (including red) were sparkling, and some of the red category includes port.

Great show, have not been very active in viewing or posing recently. Just finished harvest, so I have some catching up to do. Glad to come back on an episode were my home state represents!

QOTD: Yes. I did not catch the episode where you may have said Zin might be one of the last frontiers of CA value, but I could not agree more. Although I am completely biased. CA can have very good value in many of the appellations, you just have to be willing to keep looking (and drink some expensive unimpressive wine from time to time).

SQOTD: Recently I would say: 55% white 40% red 3% Rose 2% sparkling (need to drink more bubbles) on a not so seemingly random side note, for all you beer fans out there that wish they made a sparkling wine like beer try the Deus, here is a little info and ratings: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/202/7661

  • TLove

OTD1: 85% red, 8% white, 5% dessert (including port), 1% rose. But drinking more and learning more.

QOTD2: I would really like to see California slip in price. I have absolutely no interest in spending $30 on a bottle of a so-so, over-oaked berry bomb of a wine when I can get a really good bottle of Gigondas, Ribera del Duero, or top southern Italian wine with the same viscosity, but far more complexity, age, and balance. Do I think thats going to happen? Nope.

  • Glad you had a great b-day! I like the classic-style eps too, though Ray did rock.

    Side QOTD: Red 55%; White 35%; Bubbly 4%; Rose 6% – very unbalanced πŸ™
QOTD: I have trekked away from Cali with my palette. I may have to step back.

Good show GV! QOTD: Red 80% White 15% Rose 5% Sparkling 0%
Cali value? Less and less so. And even less for cab’s. For value I look to France, NZ, Spain.
For California value I look to syrah, as most of the zins the last few years have been over-ripe and over extracted.

  • XXXXX

    red 25%

It can offer great value, if you like CA style wines. But for my preferences it is overpriced and I am not crazy about the style in which most of the wines seem to be made

  • Sevagpc

    50 percent Red

Happy Birthday Gary! 35? You sure πŸ™‚ ???

  • Sevapc

By the way, I do believe CA offers value. It has a lot to do with where in CA. Right now, I am big on the Central Cost/Paso Robles, Santa Cruz County, Mendocino County. Napa and Sonoma are great, but there is so much more to be explored in CA.
