  • Smarshall

    90% RED 70% Cab/Bord 20% Pinot/Burg
    7% white varitals
    1% rose (summer only)
    2% late harvest
bubbly in its own class good anytime and always a couple of bottles in the fridge, drank often but not often enough

  • Don Simpson

I was drinking a lot of whites and bubbles over the summer but with the colder weather the pie chart is starting to swing back to the reds. Current breakdown:

    45% Red
    35% White
    20% Sparkling Wine
0% Rose (still haven’t broken into this category yet)

I think it would take quite some time for value to re-emerge in California. I’ve been steering clear because my money can go so much farther in other parts of the world right now.

  • Cameron

Qotd: 50% red, 30% white, 15% sparkling (mostly Champagne and prosseco), 5% rose (including sparkling rose).

  • QOTD: 70% Red, 25% White, 3% Bubbles, 2% everything else (including Rose, port, icewine, etc.)

Side question: I think the value is going to have to come from places like Santa Barbara, Paso Robles, and the lesser known north coast AVAs. Land is too expensive in Sonoma and Napa. I hope (and think) that there’s an opportunity for wineries in those “lesser” areas to sort of take up the QPR cause and become major players via high QPR wines.

QOTD: 55% White; 35% Red; 5% Port; 5% Sparkling — have not really tried Rose, but on the to do list. Recently have fallen hard for dry Riesling which has really tipped the white balance.

Happy belated 35th GARY!!qotd: Definitely, it just depends WHERE in California the wine’s coming from. Or what the vartietal(s) is.side qotd: You didn’t mention Yellow wine Gary. About 42.5% red, 42.5% white, 8% sparkling, 6% rose, 1% yellow.

  • cnwebber

    75% red 20% white 3% sparkling 2% everything else

    QOTD 1: 70% Red, 27% White, 2% Bubbles, 1% Rosé
QOTD 2: I definitely think that Cali can be a value play, I’ve had some killer wines lately that are very reasonably priced. I think that if enough producers start bringing the thunder in the lower price ranges it could actually shift the overall price downward. Plus… they’re competing with a lot of $7-15 malbecs right now (due to their popularity), and I can definitely see that driving some producers to lower some prices. I don’t think the top shelf Cali bottles will be changing anytime soon ($60+), but I can definitely see some more values start to pop out in the $15-30 range, of which there is already quite a bit out there that is good.

    QOTD 1 — 60% red – 35% white – 4% bubbles – 1% rose
QOTD 2 — There are definitely many good deals to be had in California, especially now. Many distributers will need to move inventory of a particular wine to make room for the incoming new vintage. Therefore, they will offer these wines to restaurants and retailers at a discounted price(depending on the laws of that region). The Restaurant/Retailer can then pass these savings on to their customers. Just ask your local sommelier or retail salesman if he/she is getting any good deals. I am offering several big name Napa cabs at my restaurant for almost half price. But you have to ask, because most of the time we can’t list them at the discounted price so as not to hurt the “brand equity” of said wines.

P.S. THANK YOU MOTT in advance for working on Thanksgiving to put up the show. I hope you have a great one.

  • Really depends on the season. Winter it’s about 70% Red, 25% White, 5% Sparkling, and 0% Rose. Come summer time the red and white flip and I’m more around 30% Red, 65% White, 5% Sparkling and still 0% Rose.

    QOTD1: 59 red, 39 white, 2 sparkling
QOTD2: no not in by neck of the woods, as long as the availability is as poor as it is, and the euro dollar ratio, makes the producers focus on the US market

  • Phil Anderson

SQOTD: 50% White (only because we open a white virtually every night to start the eveningn off), 45% Red, 4% Rose, 1% Sparkling
QOTD: Of course I think California wine can be a value but you have to search a little bit. As you just tried a very good $22 Cab, they can be found.
Happy belated birthday, you pup! : )

    QOTD – 40% Red 40% White 19% Sparkiling 1% Rose.
QOTDII – Yes, Californian DEFINATELY has value if you look. I.E. Redcar Box Car Syrah is awesome for $20. Ridge Zinfandels for $35 are some of the most ballanced wines on the planet. Peirano Petite Syrah KILLS Bogle for about $20 or less. Hell, screw the Chard’ Gary just had, I just had an ’08 Au Bon Climat Chardonnay for $22 that kills it!!
California has the value if you stay away from the crowd.
    -WORD!

I’m not big on Rose myself.

Even at half price most of those big name Cab’s are overpriced in my opinion. I can get better cab from South Africa for under $45 all day.

One thing that would help wineries the most is getting the blasted governement off their backs. Everyone should check out the essay on Calera’s web site title “Wine ans Communism.” A must read for all free people. Well people who were once free anyway.

Looks like nobody’s really drinking champagne (forget those other “sparkling” wines…I know, there’s some decent ones out there, but the French OWN this catagory) – a shame, because its one of the greatest wines to drink at the dinner table; it literally goes with everything. It is also one of the greatest values (especially the grower champagnes) in world-class wine. A full-bodied blanc de noirs can be drunk anywhere a great Burgundy/Pinot Noir can, likewise a bigger-style blanc de blancs can easily be a wonderful substitute for chardonnay (or other full-bodied whites) and is unreal with seafood, etc, while there are more delicate champagnes that qualify perfectly as aperitif wines. If you’ve never tried it, drinking champagne throughout a meal can be one of the most sublime experiences a wine lover can have. Most drink them far too young; most of the greatest wines (and most memorable) I have had were mature champagne(s). So, like GV says (and you know you gotta do what Gary says) they’re not just for celebrations – drink more champagne!

I agree with you and posted later about what I think are great values in California. I think people are hung up on Shafer and Opus One. There is Paul Hobbs second label, Crossbarn, making some exellent reasonably priced Cab’. It is not oaky or over the top in my opinion.

    QOTD1: 70% red, 20% white 5% sparkling, 4% dessert,1% rosé
QOTD2: California value? I have no idea. Good wines from the US is often rather pricy in Sweden. But I don’t care since I spend money on wine and chocolate and nothing else 😉

  • I guess the staff at WL drink it to learn more they too.

  • Oh, another that actually listed dessert. Good.
