I live in Israel, which is very warm country and you would think Israeli’s would drink more refreshing and crisp white wines, but we don’t…we drink 75% red, 20% white and a mix of Rose and Bubbly. Personally, I drink about 90% red, 8% white and 2% rose. I am not a huge bubbly person. Thanks Gary!

QOTD2: I couldn’t say, I rarely drink California wines as here in Italy they are really difficult to find and really pricy.

Probably 40% red, 40% white, 10% each rosé and sparkling.

Re California wines, I don’t see them as value plays at all. Certainly they aren’t on the international market (I live in France) but even when I go home to the US, I wouldn’t say that anything on the west coast is a value play.

I have given up on Ridge, at a recent Ridge tasting one they poored was PINK! And all the others seemed light and watered down. Been drinking Ridge wines since the 80’s, always a fan until recently. I think Paul most not be making the wines any more? Recent style is much more lady-like. Light. Still like Storybook however…..

I don’t think of CA for value. As far as my drinking, looking at a whole year (the only fair way as I do drink somewhat seasonally), I think I probably drink a little more red than white (but not much more) and about half of either of those amounts of sparkling. Rose would be probably about half of the sparkling amount, with small amounts of dessert and fortified. Lately I’ve been drinking more white than red, and if this trend continues I will have probably had more white by the end of this year.

    Thx G!

Might have to try this wine with my cous.

  • Agreed. Their unoaked Sonoma Chard is a killer value and their Pinots are fairly priced in a world where CA Pinot has gotten overripe and overpriced.

  • Have you tried their Paso Robles Zin? Much more in the bigger, spicier style!

  • 29% for the bubs. Nice and very specific!

Gary, watched again and since I like grippy and chewy(not that you mentioned this descriptor) wines, should I wait a while or is it drinkable right away?

I watched with my little boy(9 months) and he was just chillen n watching at least for a little while.lol

    Keep up the good work!

As for the value question, I think that you can definitely find good values in CA, you just have to work at it. Also, there are a lot of values one year that jump in price the next vintage when they get a good reputation…

  • John__J

Yeah just type in vin jaune on wikipedia or something. It’s one of the world’s rarest and most unique wines. Gary had one on once, but he didn’t get a good one. It needs to decant for a good few hours, and needs food. I recommend comte cheese with it. It’s also the only wine in the world bottled in a 620ml bottle (called a clavelin)

There are QPR wines to be found in California from some of the smaller producers in Napa and in some of the wines from the central coast

Yes, there definitely are value wines to be had in California. Central coast, Paso Robles, Lodi, and Napa (from lesser known wineries). Especially with down economy there are trememdous deals out there.

GV – No on air love for Cotchery & the “CATCH”?? Shame Shame…

As for the %’s, nothing set in stone, constantly fluctuating based on company.

California Value Play? Sorry, but I don’t see it, compared Dominus to Cakebread the other day, both where too young, both where over-priced, and while California has a unique style ( yummy indeed ) you can get better quality elsewhere for MUCH less – even Canada ( Osoyoos La Rose is better than Dominus, and it’s $50 ).

  • Nice to see GV by himself again.QOTD: (this year) Red: 61%; White: 37%; Rosé: 1%; Sparkling: < 1%Will California be a value play? Short answer is “No”: with the exception of zinfandel, at virtually every price point I can (easily) think of plenty of superior offerings from Spain, Italy, South Africa, Chile, Argentina & even France.

Shopping direct with the Cali Vineyards I’m not seeing the prices being dropped to be considered moving to a Wine Value Play.
What I do see is you and the WL Team working the deals with Distributors and/or Vineyards and passing it on to your customers.

A little geography lesson, Gareee: Lake County is a different county than Napa County. Lake County is on the other side of Mount Saint Helena from Calistoga, to the east. It has within it one of the few large, natural (I think) lakes in California, Clear Lake. Lake County is hot in summer. Parts of it have obsidian all over the place. By the way, I wonder how you’ll feel about the Obsidian Ridge 2007 after it’s been cellared ten years.

It is cruel and unusual punishment to introduce your thanksgiving package when some of us can’t get it! I inquired with your wine club how come you don’t ship to MA and was told that producers can ship wines to MA, but wholesalers cannot. I researched it some more: WSJ (not a producer) wine club ships to MA, Williams Sonoma wine club can ship to MA, the California Wine Club (not a producer) ships to MA…. Gary, you know people, so have your people to talk to people, I’m sure there is a loophole that will allow you to open a new market. I’m a desperado to have a tasting with you, c’mon. For the QOTD: the distribution of my drinking habits changing constantly. Right now I would estimate it as such: 45% white, 40% red, 10% bubbles, 5% miscellaneous (occasional rose` included). BTW, do you consider vin jaune a wine?

    Hi Gary

I’m a lurker coming out. Happy BD old man (my 60th is coming up in January). I probably drink 59.5% white, 40% Red, 0.5% Sparkling, 0% Rose. I went out to eat with my wife and friends while visiting Myrtle Beach, SC this past weekend and tried a Prosecco for the first time; it was high on the smiles and yummy factor so I think sparkling wines will be the next frontier I explore.
