line of the day – ‘I used to do ‘other things’ to bring out my personality on stage.

The lighting was horrible in this episode and that ruined it for me – either my eyes are going or everything looked dark. Also, it’s always tricky when the guest knows so little about wine, no matter how much of a good bloke they might be.

QOTD: I normally have a few glasses of wine before I head out for a show. But, most of the places I play have shit for wine, so whatever is on cue in the house is what I have.

But, if I were to pick…. I suppose something big and hedonistic….like an el nido Clio, or something from K vintners.

  • If I brought wine to a tailgate, I would get my ass kicked. Only craft beer is acceptable. 🙂

    Me too!
    I’m in.

One good Train deserves another. Here is the Live From Daryl’s House Train podcast:

BTW, what was the name of the Californian Chardonnay that Mr. Stafford (any relation to Jo Stafford?) likes? Cape… Brett?

  • most show promoter’s or venue production will see “wine” on a band’s rider and 9 time out of 10 put s $10-$20 red wine (usually pretty boring) backstage. i’ve since had my tour manager change the rider to list specific wine regions (alsace, russian river, rijoa, finger lakes, chateauneuf du pape etc..) rather than, “two bottles of wine.” now it’s like something different every night.
QOTD: anything inspiring. a great glass of wine can make a great show.

  • Afun, relaxed informed episode.Enjoyed the information, and intrest in wine. Hmm,at a rock concert it would have to be a full spicy RED.

Finally…Gary gets rid of the ugly, brown plaid shirt 😉
Great show, though some audio difficulties that put a dent in certain parts. But not material.
QOTD: Depends on where the concert is and what time of year. Outdoor concert in July…cold, dry riesling. Indoor concert in October…syrah.

  • Tom

Love Train. Hopeless is one of the great songs of all time (IMO). Great show, but like some other viewers also had some sound issues at times.

    QOTD — Rose d’Anjou!

QOTD: probably beer but I will go with a nice crisp Sauvignon Blanc

  • What a great, really down to earth guest – very enjoyable viewing indeed.

Great QOTD. It would definitely depend on the weather, but when I tailgate, I’m always sure to have a sparkling wine on hand.

Gary, you should do a show on the best wines for a tailgate. There are so many factors to consider: weather, length of tailgate, food, alcohol content. I’m going to give this some more thought Sunday before my Steelers beat up on the Jets.

I’m feelin the ring tone, “absolutely perfect.” RIP Curt Hennig

  • Just wanted to say Thank You for the link. Was fantastic Matt.

Too much back light, the video quality was terrible. There was also audio issues.

And now tell us what you don’t like!

Good episode, Stafford seemed very down to earth. Not too big of a Train fan, but I enjoyed Meet Virginia when it came out. Glad Australia put up another good showing, although everyone will forget it and go back to bashing by tomorrow.

QOTD: A big ass Zin, Cab or syrah, or maybe bubbles; although I must admit I have never tailgated anything in my life.

  • Anonymous

I would probably go for a sparkling wine. Maybe a cremant de bourgogne.

  • the audio quality was a little off at times but i’m not gonna hold it against you since I enjoyed listening to Jimmy. I haven’t been to a rock concert in a long time but I think if i did go i’d probably drink something with a good amount of bubbles. demi-sec/champagne seems fitting

    Is that a Norfolk Terrier?

  • Huge MEH, Train is not a rock band.

QOTD: Depends on the band, the temps outside, and my mood

In Cancun now…..I’ll comment later. Cool guest!!! I’m sure this show ROCKS!!!!!!

  • Tom

Yup — thats Toby, my 8 year old Norfolk. Great spotting with such a small photo icon.

QOTD: I’ll have a glas of port.
My brother plays in a rock band and they drink port before concerts and actually serve it to the audience, so I guess I have to say port 🙂 cheers bro!

What a fantastic breed! Unmistakable, even with such a small photo.

Great show, great guest, who makes great music. Just had the K Northridge and loved it.

QOTD: I’d do the K again for sure. Delicious and big. Puts me in a good mood.

  • sideout

Thanks for the cool link. He said Cakebread.

  • Anonymous

    Rodenbach(ber) is ok for me!

  • cool show….never thought of a wine before a rock concert.

day concert would be a white, and night would be a dark red. Something like Motley Crue might call for some custom mixed wine drink.

  • Ian

QOTD: it’s gotta depend on what show you’re seeing doesn’t it?

    classic rock – sparkling
    blues – burgundy
    indigo girls – Riesling
    indie – cab
    heavy metal – Jack

QOTD: I feel ya Jimmy, before an event like a rock show a Red might get me a little too mellow. Bubbles always get me in a good mood, I think I’d have to go that route. It would be fun to have sparkling wines from all over the world for a big “tailgate”.
