I think he said marzipan fruit, as in marzipan marizipan… it is often made into fruit shapes.

I’m sorry, I’m from Denmark and are not familiar with marcipan fruit? or marcipan marcipan?
So its just marcipan shaped as fruits? Here we use marcipan mostly for confections, and if the marcipan is shaped like fruit or animals- it has really nothing to do with marcipan. Its very artificial. Could it be something like that? Again just wondering and trying to understand.

    20-16 Jets

I am generally a big-red drinker, but when I drink whites I do really enjoy Torrontes and Sancerre; have had some really nice Torrontes for not a lot of bones. 17-10 Jets..enjoy the game

I am in like flint, just got the day off. Let me know if anything changes.

I have had several Torrontes and I very much enjoy the crispness and floral component.
Blacksmith Cellars out here in CA make a lovely one that made the “SF Chronicle Best Buys under $15” list last summer.

Looking forward to after the Super Bowl so I won’t have to hear about football for a while. ; )

Audiofan, I hope that it is the Torrontes grape that is implied as the simpler of the two! But ,yes, especially in the rather generous fragrance of big ,floral bouquets (literally) ,accompanied by some spiced fragrances, I find them to run towards a similar profile, in the nose especially, but also, they would both run across the palate much drier than those misleading olfactory signals might anticipate. I do agree, that the complexity of Alsatian Gewurz (rather than goopy, cheap, factory-industrial ‘products’ of newer-world production) can be sublime, especially from Cru Vineyard AC designates, but even entry level efforts are often richly balanced studies of weight, acid, and fruit profiles, whereas Torrontes I’ve had, while easy to enjoy, seem to deliver much on the nose, but light bodied, (unripe) stone fruits, and similar hints of melon, carambola, etc. I think maybe I was just a bit to rushed, and vague in my response, which many might note, I am usually not… sometimes long winded ,even. My bad… peace, cheers, etc.

  • QOTD1: Steelers 24 Jets 10….this score brought to you by a very disgruntled Pats fan.
QOTD2: Never…but will definitely give it a try soon.

I do believe that yes, GV means simply ‘marzipan’, (artificial fruit shaped (popular artisinal item), or otherwise. I think he digs it. I agree, it is rather artificial, and the almond component is subtle, so for a non-sweet (NOT) lover. like myself, it is easy to lose the ‘almond’ component, and just perceive the sickly sugariness. yuck. But then again, Amaretto is also from almonds, and though it is, on its own, sickly sweet, can easily be diluted, as incorporated into coffee or coctails, pretty wonderfully.

  • Anonymous

Yay! for almonds! Marzipan, and otherwise.

  • New poster here, Been watching the show for the last month and I love it. I am going to give Torrontes a try next time I go wine shopping. Looks like there are a lot of great ones to try for a very reasonable price.

    QOTD1: Jets 24- Pitt 21
    QOTD2: see above.

  • Anonymous

Ahh, thank U for clearing that up. Totally agree in both aspects, hate the artificial “candy marzipan things” but big fan of Amaretto (also by it self). AND LOVE REAL MARZIPAN.

  • QOTD1: Lion 24, Jets 17 (wake up Rick, wake up)
QOTD2: Have had a few and will continue to buy.

  • Meh

QOTD: Pitt 27 Puke green 17
    QOTD2: yes, meh

  • Ha! Good one, Audiofan.. BTW, I agree with your comments about Torrontes. There are so many other white wines I’d rather drink..

  • Anonymous

Congratulations to your Jets for their acheivement. I will pull for them as my Cowboys are so woefully out of the picture.

    QOTD #1 Jets 21 Pittsburg 17
QOTD #2 Not that I can recall but would love to try one.

I went to LSU and spent a decent amount of time in New Orleans. I often went to Elio’s in the UPT off Claiborne. I like his selection for the most part. While in Baton Rouge I loved Matherne’s grocery store on Highland huge selection and often didn’t “end of the season” sales and I would stock up

  • Anonymous

QOTD#2: No, but sommethhing to try if I can find it.

  • Anonymous

    Steelers: 24
    Jets: 10
    I have tried torrontes.

  • Anonymous

How would you compare Torrontes to other white varietals?

  • Anonymous

I wish – thanks for the invite. The bay area is tough to pull off until Tioga Pass opens.

  • Anonymous

    QOTD#1 – I’ll go 21-17 Jets
    QOTD#2 – yes, I’ve tried torrontes.

  • To @ Moltei: In my opinion, Torrontes is light with floral notes (no oak).. lighter than gewurztraminer.

Hi there Sammy. Saw your video blog with Sam Plunkett. Really good stuff, well done. Look forward to viewing more of them. I’m from Melbourne. Do you have your own vineyard/winery? Have you been affected by the floods there?

  • Anonymous

Out of absolute shock and despair in response to the way my Patriots ended up on Sunday, I refuse to answer the first QOTD… and I very VERY reluctantly congratulate you out of personal respect as a fan and friend. I DON”T WANT TO TALK ABOUT THAT GAME!!

    QOTD (b.): Yes, yes YES!

  • Anonymous

Shhhhhh!!! As much as I believe everyone should try new wines and expand their palates just for the thrill of it, I am afraid you may have let out my favorite secret. Please stop telling everyone how incredibly delicious Torrontes is… I like paying only $9-$15 for it 🙂 And impressing people at dinner parties with ‘my exotic wine of awesomness and value’.

  • Gday Peter,
My day is Fine Wine Manager at Dan Murphys in Shepparton, then on the side I have my own wine brand called Seraphim Wines where I specialize in Goulburn Valley Shiraz and Cabernet. I source my grapes from various vineyards around the region. So far we havnt been affected by the floods – Fingers crossed!! What do you do with yourself??

“The way things are going, they’re gonna Malbec-stone me.”
Jeez, are you telling me you got nothing better to do than read every post here? (Wait a damn minute…I ALSO sometimes read every post…God help us!) And the larger the glass, the bigger the pour!
P.S. Sprite & CitrusWater are two completely different things; the Sprite rarely tops 85 points while the CirtusWater frequently hits 89+ depending on how cold it is!

Hey, don’t always get to post everyday so when I’m around I like to have a laugh with you guys! Take it easy…this & cleaning the litterbox is all I got! But I’m pretty sure there’s been others who have surpassed me by far. Speakin’ of cat pee, I’ve noticed that distinctive aroma in certain white varietals…right before I poured it in my wife’s glass! ;-D

  • grr, more american football! Hence, this episode only is about 4 minutes long, as far as I am concerned! 😉
    So, QOTD1 : no comment!

Good decision to talk about torrentés, which I really like…visited some bodegas in Argentina (most of it doesn’t come from Mendoza, I think, but from Cafayate, and it’s typical to plant the torrontés vinyards at higher altitude) a couple of years ago. In Cafayate, there’s even an ice cream parlour with torrontés ice cream, nice!!!
    So, QOTD2 : yes

  • Jets 24 – Pit 10
    Bears 28 – Pack 24

    Bowl
    Jets 31 – Bears 28

    So exciting. Nice wine.

Been away for a while. Sorry. Work always getsw in the way. I have to say I was happy for you Gary that the J-E-T-S won on Sunday. They sure are an entertaining bunch.
    QOTD: Yes.
QOTD #2: Jets 30-24 in OT

  • Nice Show! just a comment about torrontés riojano. Mostly it comes from Cafayate and the Tomero torrontés riojano grapes come from there. Far away from Mendoza in Salta. Calchaqui Valley.

  • ahh
and its better if the torrontés is new vintage
I think 2008 its too old for this grape
maybe thats one of the reasons of the H2O alike

  • Anonymous

The WINE part of the show was fine, although the wines themselves were not impressive.

QOTD: Torrontes? Yes, I’ve had a few. As for the prediction,

    Pittsburgh 24
    NY Jets 23

  • Jets 17 Steelers 20

  • yes

  • Yes. Love Torrontes. Didn’t know there were a few varieties. Thanks! Love the Colome every year, Alamos not bad either.

  • Think the second one (Altivo) was too old. I think it needs to be fresher.

    Thank you very much.

QOTD 1: Jets get bent over and spanked and not so gently reminded that they don’t belong in the playoffs. Rex Ryan continues to talk trash about next year.
QOTD 2: I have, but cannot recall which one it was. Clearly, it was memorable.

BTW, I have posted once before under another name, but I suppose this is my first official appearance outside LURKERVILLE. Hey y’all!

  • Anonymous

GV – congrats on the Jets win! I knew you’d be over the moon when I saw those results.

QOTD: have definitely enjoyed Torrontes in the past and look forward to doing so again!

  • I don’t know what to do with Torrontés.. The cute girl dorm-smell kond of putts me off. Maybe I didn’t have a proper Torrontes yet but to me Torrontes seems a Gewurztraminer without the depth and with too much sweetness.

Any suggestions for a good Torrontes?

  • Anonymous

    AotD #1: Go JETS ……… Jets 2 @ Steelers 0

    AotD #2: Yes …. love Torrontes !!!

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Jets 24 Steelers 17 and in the NFC Packers 31 Bears 14. Jets And Packers In the Super Bowl perdiction to come later and being from Minnesota I bet you I will not be picking the Packers to win this game. Good show Gary.

  • pacw808

Yes on the Torrontes! The other is just not my thing.
