EP 975 Beaune Wine Tasting

Gary Vaynerchuk tastes 3 different Beaune reds from Burgundy, on the suggestion of a Vayniac. This region is in the heart of Burgundy and makes great values for a region known for its expensive wines.

Wines tasted in this episode:

2008 Dubois Chorey Les Beaune Clos MargotBeaune White or Red
1996 Maillard Savigny Les BeauneBeaune White or Red
2008 Chateau De Chorey Beaune Les TeuronsBeaune White or Red

Lines of the day, Mott, ‘That’s just Awful.’ GV, ‘That’s just like you and I became New Teenage Ninja Turtles, picked up the manhole, went down there and it was like sewer city.’

Hilarious episode full of different ways to describe stinkiness (including ‘a rhino just farted’)

Also notable for a rare swear word having to be bleeped out

Great stuff

  • Where can I get a wine bottle WLTV Sticker? My Macbook is pretty bare right now along with my bank account. CKC, you gotta love us : )

Who doesn’t love a good Beaune! Especially when smothered in Rhino fart. K-lassic.

QOTD: NY Pete’s cellar w/an empty U-Haul waiting in the driveway.

How’s about some U.S. Cab. Franc? CA and WA duel? Or, maybe an upper-crust Paso Robles selection?

Great show Gary. Makes me want to get back into the Burgundy, which I have been off of for a bit. Can be hard to find value there. This makes me interested to try again.

QOTD: Tokyo. Been many places, but have only flown through there. Can’t wait to go.

  • MattB

John_J – glad to see to DRC dream hit you too! You can join the crew in the cellar if you are up for it! Cheers, MattB

  • Whats up bro? Just wanted to make the CKC connect. The rhino fart killed me too…Absolutely outrageous but probably right on with the description. Where you from?

  • QOTD: Wow, one? One? I’m going to say Angkor Wat. But this is a tough one to pick.

  • Have you ever tried a Pinot? Theyre pretty good.

the baseball hof is in cooperstown, ny…and the football hof in canton, ohio. cooperstown is a must see for any baseball fan. visited the hof two years ago and couldn’t get enough of it…and it’s in a great little town too. you must go!

  • That’s a fun game. Can I play?

  • QOTDCKC: I’d hit up the furthest bathroom stall from the door on the first floor of the Wine Lib and see what it’s all about. You can tell a lot about business from its bathroom. No lie.

  • This is great.

THAT was a pretty spectacular, and enviable episode! It truly looked totally delicious!!

Thanks for the highlight of Becky Wasserman’s selections. this is the kind of info that can propel young wine afficionados to the next level of involvement, and like numerous others, her work proudly, clearly, simply, carries her name (in the small print!). http://www.huffingtonpost.com/brad-haskel/becky-wasserman-a-unique_b_317291.html

QotD – Mind boggling territory here; I think I smell something burning. Never mind, my brain just split apart, again…
Arbitrarily, and as you say establishment, perhaps the Guggenheim , in Bilbao.

Anywhere? a long night in Paris, starting at Jaques Melac wine bar, move to Baron Bouge, then A al Biche au bois, followed by more wine at Tonneaux Les Halles

Pinot Noir has slowly become one of my favorite varieties lately. I like the lighter side of the wine and the more red fruits that it offers. Taking a break from the heavy Cab’s/Bordeaux’s.

I may try these three out.

QOTD – Machu Picchu – It’s on my bucket list to visit the lost city.

I really wish I could find these wines in NZ, anyone with any ideas??

QOTD: Probably Kiev in Ukraine. That’s where my family came to the US from, and I’ve never had the opportunity to go over there and check it out.

  • Great show. I had a 2007 Louis Latour Volnay last night. Still tight and definitely needs 2-3 more years. Good thing I have another bottle.

Good question. Usually I would say some high end restaurant that I really want to go to, but I’ve been to like all the ones I want to go to now. Maybe somewhere in Africa. Yeah some real cool resort in Africa, that’s where I wanna go

qotd: thomas keller’s French Laundry. not too exotic but what I really want right now.

Gary, I was a bit confused whether you thought the second wine you tasted was stinky or not. You should be a little more direct with your adjectives. Just sayin’… ; )

QOTD: This might sound dumb, but the crosswalk on the Abbey Road cover. That’s an “establishment” of sorts…if it’s an event, it would be the Super Bowl.

Great show, love the Beaune, love the Wassermans. Their Burgundy selections are always good. I am a big fan of museums, and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg is high on my to do list. I think it would be a fun place to do a show.

Alright Gary, you got this lurker and college kid to come out and post. First off, love what you are doing with the show. Got into wine last year after taking Wines and Vines at Virginia Tech, then picked up on your show and everything you’re doing about 3 months ago and have been hooked ever since. Keep up all the great stuff you do!

QOTD- The one thing that I am just as interested in and getting involved with is genealogy. So my one place to visit would be Santa Croce del Sannio, Campania, Italy. That’s where my father’s side of my family came from back in the early 1900’s when making the move to Western PA [How ’bout those Steelers? ;-)]. I’ve yet to visit, although I’m planning to go back in a few years for the 100 year anniversary when my great grandfather left Italy for good for the States. That’s also one of the places I wanna explore with my wine purchasing this year to expand my palate a bit more and try out some wines from Campania.

GV, Great ep…..love the descriptors…..AND big fan of the Mottster’s Smelling and Tasting Notes. Here’s the Smelling note that will go into the spreadsheet (& CellarTracker) for stinky wine #2:

“NOSE-this is Stinky (Mott smells and says, “Oh, that’s just AWFUL!!…like backstage at the Barnum & Bailey circus with the animals”); this is sewer city; not only sheep, but this is Rhino fart at it’s finest; this is very aggressive and very earthy; this is some stinky-ass SH&T; mushroom, poopy and I LOVE it;”

QOTD: how ’bout front row, center at a JLo concert at the Beacon Theatre (damn she’s lookin hot on American Idol) 🙂

btw, I asked you a question on previous episode about a T/N you had on the Viognier….di you say “mulchy” or “mochi” ? Answer ya douche!!

Bring on the barn yard. Gotta love the rhino fart. I’m a woman…but no need to refrain from crassness. Always prone to the typical old world bret. Can’t get enough. Step up Mott.

QOTD: Check out the coral reefs along the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. Unbelievable.

Really good show! I always enjoy the descriptions. Very evocative. I was thinking about a couple of future show ideas…1) Vertical tasting of Chilean Cab or Australian Shiraz (you pick producer) to give an idea of how these wines age 2) Riesling show comparing Pfalz/Rheingau/Mosel in Germany or Germany vs Alsace vs Finger Lakes or Australia. Just some thoughts.

QOTD: Would love to go stand on the Great Wall at some point. Also excited about a trip including Kilimanjaro currently in the planning stages.

  • Ryan Richards

Great episode, I am really looking forward to trying to find some decent Burgundy just to see if i get the hype, and you’re starting me in the right direction.

QOTD: There are so many places in the world to see!! Diving the Great Barrier Reef though is my must do and see before death though.

“Da Stinky stink stink Stink… and I LOVE it!”
    Now THAT’S a quote!!

    …or waynoo da wino’s cellar… What Ballers!!

    😉

  • I actually think New World will over-power the food! When in Rome do as Romans do! So Italian food…Italian wine! I think a Barbera d’Alba or Chianti Classico would work beautifully. Many of these wines have an inherent smoked meat aroma, earthiness that mimic the flavors found in the food. They also have enough acid to cut through the creaminess of the dish and cleanse the palate. If you’d prefer white wine, I’d go with a Pinot Grigio or Pinot Bianco or even Italian Chardonnay.

Hope the meal is great! Cheers!

  • I didn’t get to stand in the middle of it…but being there is truly amazing!

I agree too. Would definitely like to see some more Laid Back Friday episodes.

  • Cherry popping, rhinosauras fart, sewer….Awesome descriptors today Gar!!

QOTD: The pyramids…but might be a little dangerous! Other ideas…Count Dracula’s Castle in Romania, Corcovado Mountain in Brazil, Stonehenge in England…

You sure you don’t want to be Rocksteady so your farts can make it into GV wine descriptions?

So I lurk…until now. I’m not at all into Lord of the Rings or any other type fantasy stuff – nothing against those that are, I just tend to find myself watching ESPN or Discovery Channel. But I must admit, A girl I liked was going with some friends and…I did see the original Lord of the Rings in Theater…as a high schooler<–that really doesn't look like a word. Anyway, all I was thinking the entire time watching it was "WHERE DID THEY FILM THIS?"

New Zealand is the place I want to be…at least for a week. Sipping on some Sauv Blanc…perhaps even after taking a few runs. May take me 40 years but I'll get there…whether they(my wife:) like it, or not!

  • Spent some time in the small down of Beaune, beautiful place. Went there in their winter when there were no tourist around so we were given some super special treatment around wineries.

  • Globex

great episode! Love the adjectives!! Don’t censor! The description of the De Chorey Les Teurons made my mouth water, sounds like the perfect choice to enjoy with my wife on Valentines Day. Thank you for introducing it to me, I’ll be a hero.

QOTD: Cucuron France with no watch, no iPhone, no laptop, far from the financial markets and noises of the pits… and no return flight in pocket.

  • After many years of drinking and enjoying a wide variety of wines from all over the world, I’m enjoying my “Burgundy” stage at this moment. Great show, enjoyed it a lot…
QOTD: 1) The Great Wall; 2) The Pyramids; 3) Angkor Wat; 4) Le Montrachet vineyard. 5) Fleurie, Beaujolais.

  • First of all, huge bears fan here, I know what it’s like to get so close and lose. The superbowl loss in ’07 was much more devastating to me than this year’s loss. Bears v Jets is a much better watch than Packers v Pitt, imo.

QOTD: I definitely want to see the canals of Venice and leaning tower of Pisa among other popular spots in Italy. But the one thing I want to see so bad is the Moai statues of Easter Island. For whatever reason, they fascinate me, but it is particularly hard/expensive to get there. Someday.

  • QOTD: Brasserie-Brouwerij Cantillon (Cantillon Brewery) in Brussels. They have public brewing sessions from time to time where visitors can see the production of Lambic and Gueuze!

  • Davis CA, close to wine country! What about you?

  • Loved the stinky show, Gary.
As you said, most people don’t like Burgundy when they’re new to wine (myself included)… I love it now, but it was a journey. All roads lead to Burgundy (does anyone know who said this?)
    QOTD: Wine Library of course.

  • Big G, I love how you mix up your exiting slogan. It’s always fun after 4+ years of watching to hear about a new varietal. Look forward to trying it.

    QOTD. WLTV 3rd floor.

  • Nice man that’s legit! I’m in Ellensburg, WA. It’s not exactly wine country but I still enjoy it. I go to Central Washington U.
