EP 975 Beaune Wine Tasting

Gary Vaynerchuk tastes 3 different Beaune reds from Burgundy, on the suggestion of a Vayniac. This region is in the heart of Burgundy and makes great values for a region known for its expensive wines.

Wines tasted in this episode:

2008 Dubois Chorey Les Beaune Clos MargotBeaune White or Red
1996 Maillard Savigny Les BeauneBeaune White or Red
2008 Chateau De Chorey Beaune Les TeuronsBeaune White or Red

95/100

Lines of the day, Mott, ‘That’s just Awful.’ GV, ‘That’s just like you and I became New Teenage Ninja Turtles, picked up the manhole, went down there and it was like sewer city.’

Hilarious episode full of different ways to describe stinkiness (including ‘a rhino just farted’)

Also notable for a rare swear word having to be bleeped out

Great stuff

    The Kop at Anfield.

    Long live The King.

WOW! I obviously waited too long on this one because you have TONS of comments already. Kudos!

QOTD: I’ve been to a few Western European countries, and seen a few of their historical monuments, and loved the experiences I had there. I’ve had some unforgettable family vacations within the USA when I was a kid. However, I’ve never been to the East. Ever.
I would love the unique and completely new experience of visiting something like Malaysia. It apparently has such a diversity of cultures, and the landscape ranges from tropical island to sky scraper-riddled city to verdant farmland. I’m there.

Loved the show! Glad it was a good one after the Oregon disappointment. About to try and find all 3 right after this post.

QOTD: I will stay stateside and say dinner at The French Laundry in Napa.

  • I lived in Beaune teaching English for a year. It’s where I discovered wine. Every time you review something from the Beaune region of Burgundy, it makes me smile.

  • QOTD: no doubt, Federer’s box on Central Court on Wimbledon’s men final.

  • Wow, good answer, Sushi from Chianti!!

  • Awesome show, wow! Forest floor stinky stink stink stink? Doesn’t get more real than this. Loved the action.

  • I’m a Renaissance addict, with an affinity for the history of Henri II and Diane de Poitiers. I have always wanted a picnic lunch on the banks of the Cher River overlooking the Chateau de Chenonceau in the Loire Valley. Of course my picnic spread would need to include the Loire Valley bliss; a roll out of goat cheeses (Crottin de Chavignol, Sainte Maure du Touraine, a little Pouligny), crusty French baguettes, some cornichons, quince, and a bottle of aged Vouvray from the 60s, unfined/unfiltered Nicholas St Bourgeuil cab franc, a tarte tatin finished with a Anjou mousseux and a Coteaux du Layon dessert wine.

Dreaming in the morning is a great way to start the day…

Not if us bluenoses have anything to do with it !

Wonder where to get a Quirky..WLTV? They look like what I’ve been needing for some time!

  • Matt McCabe

Why do you like this kind of corkscrew, Globex? It looks like a regular type. I am tired to ripping my cork corks to shreds!

  • Globex

yep I hear ya. Nothin fancy, and we toss the cork upon opening. If opening a bottle out back on the patio I use one similar to this http://www.epicstyle.com/p-385-bell-corkscrew-wooden-handle.aspx except its 20+ years old. Old school I suppose. 🙂

  • Took me a while to get here, but REALLY Loved the show. If you ever get to Paso, you have to check out Windward Vineyards. They produce as close to this style as they can, and they do an AWESOME job. Many don’t care for the stinky with floral, tart strawberries and cranberries, but I think you would find some friends here. Love it!
QOTD: Roubaix Velodrome showers. Where all the greatest cyclists in the world have all rinsed off the Arenberg mud before collecting their cobblestone trophy. If those walls could talk…

QOD – The French Laundry, San Francisco.

I seriously want a shirt that has Rhino fart. There has to be a talented designer that can make that happen.

  • QOTD: too many good “spots”.. first one that comes to mind would have to be Machu Picchu

  • I LOVED relating the nose of a wine to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I’m going to do my own QOTD.

QOTD: Who is your favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle?

Thanks Gary mine was Donatello, he was by far the smartest turtle and most vital to the clan. Plus purple is a vastly underrated color!

Real QOTD: I would love to take a boat across the Delaware river at exactly the same time that Washington crossed to ambush the Hessians. I know, I’m a dork.

Qotd: I might be a little bit biased because I love any and all meat; but for special occasions my family loves to go to Tejas De Brasil. The bring around racks of every meat possible and I would practically starve myself that day so I could eat as much of it as possible. It would also be a great place to do a pairing show imo because they would already have all the different types of meats available and you could just mix and match with a few wines.

Great ep. My choice would be El Bulli, but since that closed, I would pick the Fat Duck in London.

Also, I would like to see a review of a couple of Passetoutgrain wines. I’ve been meaning to pick up a couple of those.

Great show on Beaune…thank you for the fart references of course but especially for the wine!

QOTD: Almost anytime, but especially after a show featuring French wine…under La Tour Eiffel at midnight, with some bread, a bottle of luscious red and my favorite red (-haired wife)!

Amazing episode! Since I’m not from the US episodes like this appeal to me a lot more than the ones where you are trying to find value plays for Americans (most of the wines are not available for me anyway…). Also the length seemed ideal in comparison to rushing it in under 10min. Great stuff!

  • Gary, when you talk of stinky, you talk about brettanomyces?

QOTD: San Isaac Cathedral in San Petersburgo

  • Anonymous

taste wine while sitting on the head of the sphinx in Egypt please! (after the protests)

  • CKC represent! QOTD: New Orleans French Quarter. Does the music get any better?

If you are talking wine restaurants, it is Bern’s Steakhouse in Tampa. The wine list is a phone book. If you want a wine from the year you (or your parents) were born, this is the place.

  • I really enjoyed this show, very educational and I liked the stinky-stink! I would love to visit the Taj Mahal and explore parts of India. I lived in New Zealand for a while and that is a place to be visited! South Island…Milford Sounds

I’m glad there are still some good burgundys out there at reasonable prices. Yesterday I bought a Mecurey Premier Cru that was recommended by the owner of my favorite wine store for only $20. I hope it is good and a good value. QOTD – I would be playing golf at Augusta National.

  • David Cremone

Love the “Earthy” wines as well. Nebbiolo still my fav.
QOTD: I would love to be in the Piedmont region of Italy just as they pick their crops.

QOTD: One place?? I’m sitting here thinking and one special place does not come to mind. In fact every minute a different place comes to mind and none of them would be #1. After this show, I was thinking Hospice de Beaune but that’s not my answer. Maybe Penn State Beaver Stadium during a good game but that’s not it either. Home with my husband would be my most often answer but we’d also like to go other places.

My husband and sons and other male relatives had a great time visiting Cooperstown last summer. In addition to the hall of fame highlights, they watched youth leagues that had traveled there from all over the country. Coincidentally they saw friends from school when a local PA Phila suburb team was playing a team from CA.

I just want to let you know that I really enjoy this vlog! I am a college student and trying to learn about wines on a college budget. My knowledge is very minimal and it’s hard to always READ about how to taste wine correctly and how to describe it. But watching it on here is the perfect way for me to see how it is really done and will improve my blog. Obviously, you know what you are doing but if you want to check mine out:
    http://collegeandwine.wordpress.com/

and any feedback would be awesome! my email is [email protected] as well! Thanks!

  • Hey Gary and everyone. I am a winemaker from Washington State. I used to watch all the time, then stopped due to winery ownership overload….but I am back now. I love what you do and thanks for all you have done for the wine industry in the US!

QOTD: dying to check out priorat and smell those rocks.

  • Don Simpson

I love that Gary used “Rhino Fart” in his tasting note. That is perfect.

QOTD: Thunder Show in the Eiffel Tower. Make it happen.

  • tjvalla

    get in there my son

  • tjvalla

    definitely!
We’re actually still waiting for Mott as an official guest…

Interesting show as I generally find Beaune wines a little disappointing for the money – despite them being cheaper than majority of Burgundy.

QOTD – 13th hole at Augusta National golf course.

The diplomats I tend to invite over often to prefer beef over fowl dishes for dinner?

QOTD – for me, Machu Picchu, Pyramids, Great Wall? I want to get some more ancient exposure. For WLTV, how about more NY Wine love? hit up some North Fork or Finger Lakes establishments?

  • QOTD: El Bulli all the way!

  • I guess we will just have to wait and see

  • WineCutter

QOTD: Londolozi Game Reserve in S. Africa with my kids when they are old enough to make the trip.

  • TommyB

tough one, probably a vineyard in Tuscany with a woman so beautiful its incomprehensible – with a bottle of Chianti and some food of course.

As much as I appreciate the IDEA of fine Burgundy, the financial dimensions always makes me say, “Why not do a Loire Valley red, or any number of other interesting reds that are WAY less expensive.” Is it really worth it? I’m sure the Burgundy devotees will say “absolutely”. Ok fatcats, invite me over sometime!

Tour and tasting at DRC in Burgundy…maybe a walk through LaTache.

I would love to visit the turkish underground city of Derinkuyu and see the ruins of their underground wineries.

  • QOTD: Dinner at El Bulli followed by Ferran Adria sitting at my table for a nice chat.

  • Nice double rinse on the last one.
QOTD: Ski Hut in Chamonix, France.

I like that idea. I’ve already got that trip booked for May, and the woman too.
