    Malbec from France! thank God

I’m porting over my value wine comment from the last show, since this show posted 10 seconds later.

Hughes Beaulieu 2009 Picpoul de Pinet. Underrated grape in Picpoul, and super inexpensive absolutely delicious wine. ~$8-9, great acidity, light and crisp, but not wimpy.

  • LurkerKing

LURKEY LURK LURK LURK LURK LURK!!!

  • ALLAN

Lovin’ it, because you’re lovin’ it G! Thnx for giving The Loire Valley a push….

    Qtod: Just roll

P.s Mott will have to get some extra cash for all that zooming…… 😉

  • ALLAN

    SAAAAAYYYYYY WHHHHHAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!?????? :Op

  • ALLAN

    OHHHH, it’s that crazy wine-guy again…. 😛

  • Anonymous

qotd: Head to head would be cool between obviously competing wines. But like Allan said….just roll. 5min one day, 6-parter the next. Variety is awesome.

  • QOTD: I like the one bottle tight shows but also the three+ bottle shows as well. The multi bottle show offers a great chance to see the difference in specific regions or across specific variatles.

Loire rocks. I’ve got a few inexpensive Chinons lined up for tomorrow night.

  • Randall

    YYEEEEHHHHHAAAAAWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

QOTD: Variety is the spice of life…

  • Globex

I’m definitely intrigued by your description of this wine and gonna order some to try. MOTT – where’s the link up to vinyou.com? hahaha!!

QOTD: single wine 5-minute format is ok if I can learn more about the farmer behind the wine as well (kinda Kermit Lynch style).

  • QOTD: 1 wine? Nay! Rather h2h then.

  • Anonymous

I like that you have a variety of formats, that you don’t tie yourself down to one format Gary, that is why its fun.

That being said I’ll watch a show even if its 30 mins cause I know you have something to say if it runs that long but you might lose some viewers.

Anyways, I guess variety is the spice of life. Can’t believe I went cheesy on this but I just had to since it came to mind.

  • Anonymous

    I vote for a mix of the following formats;
    – Single bottle
    – Head to Head
    – Brown bag

  • Anonymous

QOTD: I like the short episodes from time to time, but I think I prefer 2 wines at least, especially for new and lesser known varietals, so you can compare!

  • Anonymous

QOTD: I prefer a more schizophrenic approach. If you feel like doing 1, then do one. If you want to do 32 and take 3 hours, I’ll watch that too. Multi-wine/single varietals – fine. Blind tasting? – great. Double-blind? – wonderful. Cross-sectional sample of a region like Languedoc? – Love it. A single interesting wine today? – that’s great. It’s more important that you are having fun with it too.

  • Enjoyed your flare, Gary!

QOTD: I don’t mind once in a while but maybe you can elaborate a bit more on the region and the varietal!

  • Anonymous

I like a head to head format better, if you only do 1 wine and its bad, then you feel like it was a waste of time

  • I think if you do 1 wine shows every time people might lose interest. I agree with sniffysix that part what’s great about your show is that we don’t know what the format will be. Also, I really enjoy it when you have guests on. However, I am in favor of the short/tight show. 10 minutes is perfect for me.

  • Randall

    HEY!! I resemble that comment…
    🙂

  • I agree with baseball and winetechie. Mix it up. But when you do a single show, focus on the place and varietal heavily. When you do a h2h, contrast the two greatly. Most important part is finding the new regions and educating us at the same time.

  • Nick

Interesting malbec! It will be hard to find but i’ll go out and look for it.

QOTD: don’t start a routine. I like the way you are bringing the show right now with multiple formats. If you do the 1 bottle format, i like to see a bit more information and background to it. My favorite eps are the 15m longs where you discuss 2-3 wines. Also love the guests episodes from earlier on where you bring MW’s, MS’s and well knowledge people to the table.

QOTD: The ones who are telling you that they love the tight, one wine shows are just trying to impress you with how busy they are. I’ll bet they’re on the couch for three or four hours a night watching TV, or Facebooking or Tweeting 🙂 Stop and smell the roses.

  • Randall

Funny thing, John… I was thinking that exact same thing.

  • fat chef

We almost always have a bottle of malbec on the rack, love it!!

QOTD: Just keep mixing it up. I enjoy the variety, and not knowing what to expect. I have a feeling if you nail down a concept the show will get boring. Follow your heart!

  • Love the Malbes…

QOTD: Mix it up.. although you’ll need a few of these short show on top of each other to make 1,000 by the 21st!!!

Interesting question. My paisan, who is not a fan of yours, has always bitched that the show is too long for anybody who works and has a life to pay attention to. I, on the other hand, a big fan, have always enjoyed the mulit-wine shows, especially brown bag tastings, musch more than the solo flights. To me, one of the more fascinating things to see is a veteran comparing wines of the same varietal – maybe from different regions or harvests. When you do only one wine – a wine I am very unlikely to have tried or even buy in the near future – the excitement factor is pretty low.

  • ALLAN

You’re always awesome John. Great comment! ;OP

  • Nick

    well said

  • Eagleputt

Keeping doing what you do. Whatever format you feel like at the moment. It’s important that you stay interested in order for us to stay interested.

  • Jason S.

As a newbie I’ve been going thru back shows and my favorite episodes are definitely the ones with the expert guests as well Sasha of course! Even though the run time of these episodes is over my single setting limit it is definitely worth it to break them up into multiple sittings for me. Also, luv your variable format and laid back Friday’s!

Great show, liked the “one wine” format for a change of pace. Here’s a thought… 1 wine per day Mon-Wed, then review all three again head to head on Thu. Or could do 2 wines per day head to head, same varietal with cheap vs pricey, same varietal from different “terroirs”, or something like that!

If you are pressed for time G, just send a case of wine to my house and I’ll tape myself drinking it. Might even make a comment or two:)

  • ALLAN

    Where’s Castello-witz??? That guy’s always late…….. HEHE! :))))

  • Anonymous

After posting, I read the comments that preceded mine, and agree with most folks. Variety and unpredictability is what the show has been about. It’s like opening up a pack of baseball card. One pack might give you Micky Rivers and Thurman Munson , and the next pack may give you Jim Eisenreich and Butch Huskey.

  • Oh, man! I almost bought this from the Library when I was there the other day! Let’s see what GV has to say on the matter (of the wine, not me almost having bought it).

  • ALLAN

    I think NOT! 😛

  • So I’m about half way through this episode, the part where you’re asking for feedback about the length of show. You say something like, “I know people that leave comments on the show are always asking for more wines… but there are a bunch of people emailing me (silent majority) that want short shows.”

So is the silent majority (aka LURKERS) more important??? Interesting…

Anyway, not a bad show. I like finding little one offs like this wine. Sounds interesting.

QOTD: I like the one wine format, if it’s something really interesting (much like this one). But if it’s a more well known region/varietal combo, I’d prefer to see at least two, if not three… but what do I know as a lowly daily commentor…

  • Anonymous

QOTD: You’ve got skill enough to pull off almost any format you’ve attempted. I think the way to go is to keep things fluid. Don’t get set into any one format. You’ll be great!

I love the information. Please keep pumping out info on varietals and regions. I LOVE THAT!!!

Thanks and keep up the good work!

    Steelers till I die!!!

    Yours,

    B.S.

QOTD: I like one wine shows if the wine is like some discovery or something that might not be so commonly known. I also would have liked like a rounded out ending on the wine description cause you did seem to cut it a little short. I wouldn’t mind a one wine show once a week I think thats fair.

This Malbec seems right up my alley, I enjoy a decent amount of pepper.

  • Love the shout-out for @Sarno 😉 QOTD: Was not a fan when you started shorter episodes, number of views and comments proved me wrong. Keep it mixed for the time being though, the longer shows are better storytelling.

  • Randall

Yes… “connect with your base”… “show them that you give a F%&#”… “if you want to succeed in business you have got to let actions speak louder than words”…
    sound familiar, G?

  • John__J

qotd: for me the answer is simple: just keep switching it up, don’t do the same thing all the time. Keep doing what your doing and give us the occasional 2 parter guest episode, and the 7 minute 1 wine episode, and the 3 wines from one area episode, and the 4 wines blind episode, and have SIR Gary pop in every 150 episodes or so (I would certainly enjoy seeing him more than that personally.)

  • I am gonna keep pushing you on this V. I like the one bottle shows BUT does it have to be from an area that we have beatin’ to absolute death on?! (Loire vailley…again!)

Go behind the scenes and maybe do a tasting of Vermont wines, Israeli wines, Estonia wines or any other region that is not well known for us, pick a bottle and do a little history of the area and it’s wine making roots and suggest it to us.

  • Anonymous

Good show Gary. I think you should mix it up, if you only have one wine you want to talk about do one. If doing several wines sets the stage for what you want to get across, do several. Doing head to head blind is always fun, and meaningful if the same price point. Or it is always educational to do maybe 4 wines of the same type from same region at different price points to see what you get for your money. Just so many ways, no one format is best.

  • John__J

And Mott dont forget to spend some more time in the Touraine buddy!!

  • John__J

I agree I had a great picpoul blanc from Languedoc that was in the same $ range and it certainly brought the q.p.r.

  • Burp

  • Hi Gary! First time poster.
QOTD: Personally love the episodes that go BEYOND the thirty minute mark (straight, no part 1 or part 2) the episode with Laura Catena comes to mind. If you got the time go for a long show, love the show either way.
