QOTD: Once or twice a week is good to do a 5-minute one wine show on the laid-back couch. Head-to-head at the table is also good for a couple of times a week. There you have it. That should handle 4-5 shows a week and you could tape them all in one day.

  • if you have 5 min you have 15.. Just saying. Loving the Malbec’s lately…

  • Anonymous

I wouldn’t mind a 8-10 min show but 5 is short changing us. I like the idea of more head to heads. In the end i guess I could be ok with 5 min shows as long as there is a show each day. But if your only posting 2 or 3 videos a week they need to be longer.

  • Anonymous

Ideally 20-25min shows where you cover at least 3 wines. Brown bag and great guests like papa Sasha. Keep rolling Gary.

It is great you have come out slut! Just make sure you keep it very slutty! 😀

I think a mix of show lengths and bottle formats is probably the answer that will lead to the most happy viewers. As others have already suggested 1-2 short shows combined with some longer ones would work well.

I do like that in the shorter episodes you usually tell us a bit more about the region and explore some off-the-beaten-path wines. I think this works best if you try to choose a wine with a style characteristic to the region/subregion/varietal.

An epic 30 minute episode would also be more than welcome every couple of weeks.

    Just my two cents.

  • Anonymous

I think the majority of the episodes should be like this, but once a week or so go longer. Maybe even make it a brown bag and get the info on the wine after the fact.

I bet someone has asked this before, but what does he do with the wine after the episode? If he just pours it out it would be great to have a pick of him pouring out a really expensive wine.

  • I disagree John. There have been areas that have been producing wine for hundreds (some thousands) of years that deserve our attention. Just because they don’t have the marketing machine or the prestige of some chateau doesn’t mean they are not worthy of a 5 minute show. That is why I said to do the research behind the scenes and then present a bottle and an area.

If I see one more video on a wine from the Rhone or the Loire Valley, I’ll vomit.

But, Yes. Yes John, I am young. 😉

To follow your logic. I am looking for that Mustang or Harley among the Mercedes. Vroom, vroom baby. Vroom vroom. 😛

This episode went well, but the one wine format is like a home run swing–all or nothing. What happens when you are reviewing a 75 pt stinker–it seems like it would be hard to fill 5 minutes of content with a wine that sucks.

  • I’m basically a lurker, so I’m not sure if that qualifies me as the “silent majority” or not. 😛
But I prefer the shows with multiple wines (the blind shows are my favourite, but not all episodes need be blind). Two or three bottles is my sweet spot.

I’d love to see you have Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson on the show. I’m not always a fan of the guest shows, but he’s an incredible human being, and with wrestling having such a big influence on you, I think it’d be a great fit. Following his Facebook page I’ve developed somewhat of a man-crush. I have no idea how “into wine” he is, but I have no doubt he’d make a great guest regardless.

  • Thanks! I’d love some suggestions and hopefully I can find it.

  • *in her best bugs bunny gremlin voice* MMmmmmmmmmmm could be. 😉

  • The short format seemed REALLY short and felt something was missing. I prefer multiple bottle tastings better for comparison purposes. I especially like Brown baggers. Try having people brown bag some wine for you and then you try and guess varietal, price, maybe even region if you please. It’s all good, but since you asked………

This was a nice show. One wine can work but I’d hate to see you replace all your shows with this format. Once or twice a week, if you want to “nerd it up” about one wine, I say go for it.

I still think 15 minutes, 3 wines is the format I enjoy the most. I like 3 examples of one style so I can get an idea of how that style might be and maybe I have a chance of finding at least one of the 3 specific wines.

I am not a CKC but I’m cheap like one so I like your “value plays” quite a bit. I like it when you mention that a $20 wine from some unknown place is as good as the $50 one from the famous place. So “value” doesn’t always mean under $10 to me. Find me mass-distributed 90 point wines for under $10 with an old world style. Easy right? 😉

It’s “Pork Pulled Sandwich” Lets get it right.

QOTD; Mix it up,brown bag, head to head, cool quest, one wine.
Good show, go with the feeling of the day.

I really like your little stuffed noodles David. Especially with white sauce and a bottle of Barbera d’Alba, mmmmmm goood! 😛

QOTD: I like the one wine format for a quality wine or something that needs some in depth explanation (not just to make the show shorter) At the end of the day it’s nice to be mixing things up so you do some brown bags, selection for a reign or vineyard special guests and so on. So I love the idea as an “addition” to the great format that everyone already loves!

  • Anonymous

Mixing it up is good, but I like head to head with the same grape from the same region at different price points.

I caught it! I am also aware of your “chemical” infatuation. I picked up on that awhile ago and I’m at getting through your list you provided. I still bow to you ole wise one.

    Melba,
You do realize that Gary is doing all of this for free and just might have
better things to do than research very obscure wines or growing regions. In
this age of global communications it’s hard to believe that there are
undiscovered gems out there waiting to be discovered. If there are, go out
there, find them and become rich and famous for doing it.

Gary, rubbing shoulders with James Suckling…way to go Idaho!

  • I like the format of singular wines. It allows newbies like me a chance to absorb and try without breaking the bank. I am in the camp of, “Try everything to find what excites you.”

Pulled Pork, not Pork Pulled…then again what does it matter….open wide and shovel in regardless what its called

Love the weekday short shows and love the specific infos about “appelations” and grape varietals. I like the nerd factor in your shows,I would not mind if you cranked that aspect up a bit. Maybe you could go short shows during the week and then a big ass show at the end of the week!

  • Anonymous

I definitely preffer multiple wines. It’s nice to get more info. about a particular region and technical info. However one wine just doesn’t cut it for me.

There appears no one format that provides WLTV utopia – each format provides something different – like body parts, each has a purpose and a value. I like the single bottle show – but also like the others. The time for naval gazing about which format is best, is over!

Very interesting show! I knew nothing about Malbec from the Loire before watching this. Thanks!

  • Randall

    “Old” being the operative word…

  • qotd: i think head to head is the way to go.

  • GOTD: Head to Head

Gary, How about 1 winery at a time ? I really wonder about the entry level vs. mid-level vs high-end from same producer.

  • If the silent majority is truly silent how do you know what they want? As I have said in the past: a lot of Gary is better than a little Gary but that is better than no Gary. I, like others, am not convinced that you could do one format nor would we want it. I guess my big feedback would be it would be bad to have one wine fail to represent so choosing the wine would have the change a bit. As always I love the nerdy info so learning there is Malbec in Loire is fascinating.

Can’t wait for episode 2k you should really know what you are doing by then ;)!

  • Unless the one wine is expensive…

Hi Gary, I just wanted to say that i discovered your show about two weeks ago and have been HOOKED since! I must have watched a hundred shows since then and can not get enough. I love in DC and loved your Weygandt show so much. I live two blocks from his store and it’s the best. Funny cause I used to live two blocks from Kermit Lynch’s store in Berkeley as well. Anyway just wanted to say keep of the good work, I will be watching religiously from now on.
QOTD: Prefer multi wine shows cause I love the comparison and especially prefer the themed wine shows. Suggestion: would you do a show focusing on Burgandy Fixin wines?

  • Anonymous

for the most part, anything that you bring to the show be it long, short or what ever, it works for me

  • Anonymous

I enjoy the one wine shows and say get the shovel and go even deeper. What should we expect on the nose/mouth for this varietal before you taste it. I watch the show for education and entertainment so on the occasion when you do go one wine nerd it up.

Throw in some classic blinds too, horizontals and verticals would be way interesting. I hosted a Sauv. Blanc blind horizontal recently and it blew people minds when I got to the reveal.

  • Welcome to the nation!!

  • QOTD: I think that only one wine is a bit short. Head to head or the 3 wine format are the most enjoyable… And have the longer shows yes we are all busy but this is a great way to layback from all the daily crap and enjoy one of the great things in life… Keep up the great work…

  • Nick Doheny

Thanks! Drinking a Brouilly right now and catching up on old episodes. Cheers.

  • Anonymous

Head to head would be a great way to keep the show tight and focused.

  • QOTD — One wine show is better than no show IMO, so I would say maybe have 1 or 2 multiple wine shows a week with a couple of singles thrown in for good measure or maybe even 1 big brown bag episode a week and and the rest 1 or 2 wines. I dig the short shows and I also dig the long shows and I think it would be a shame if you did away with the longer shows all together. Just my .02$

  • Anonymous

I like the 1 or 2 bottle show…short and sweet for this busy world we live in !!!

  • Anonymous

QOTD: one wine is good for once in a while, but i’d like to see 2 or 3 per show.

  • Don Simpson

QOTD: I think this one at 6:40 was pushing it to get the wine in and the shoutout so 5 min might feel rushed. 8-12 min shows are still very tight and enables you to bring the killer content. A great strength of this show is the variety in formats (1 bottle, head-to-head, blind tasting, guests, laidback Friday, flip phone, sneak peaks of Wine Library and staff, etc.) Keeps it interesting and fun. The only thing I’d stay away from is those weeks when you have 3-4 guests. It gets tough to watch several back-to-back 30-35 min shows. Keep up the variety and the Thunder!!!

  • Anonymous

Liked the show and the concept. I like the idea of doing these shows with 1 wine or a head on head type thing. I will say this though, if your doing the head on head show I would like to see there be one common and simple thread. Because one thing I like about this is that you can get into detail about the information and how it relates to the regional wine business with out getting too bogged down in it. So to quote a common phrase/concept from writing technical engineering papers, use the ‘keep it simple stupid’ conept.

Bill Cosby once said “The sure way to failure is trying to please everybody” that being said, I don’t mind the one bottle shows. Personally I rather two or three wines @ a time. The people that would be attracted to quicker shows means just that………the subject of wine and learning about wine is not a priority due to their attention span towards this subject. Therefore speaking for all the people who think such moments as the three part Kermit Lynch episode were full of brilliance, and loaded with wine knowledge and charisma, I want to keep learning about a subject that has a TON of subject matter which will appeal to me @ the cost of five minutes or thirty. #justsaying

    P.S. If it’s a show, it’s a show.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: One bottle shows, three bottle shows, head to head, blind, guests, on airplanes, in hotel rooms…mix it up!! But whatever you do, don’t promise that you’re going to do it! 😉

    p.s. It’s time for a live (real-time) show.
