  • Short and sweet, digging the format. I was able to pick up Mondavi 07 Cab Oakville for $23, so I’d say thats my fav for the price point. Love picking up 07’s on the cheap during these recessionary times!

    March on!

  • Randall

You’re safe in your castle for now, O King John The First. We serfs don’t have the technology to create bows and long swords and so forth. But your day is coming, my Liege…

    :D!!

    Matt,
I think a lot of it has to do with where you were brought up on wine. Those of us who were introduced to premium wine in California probably have a greater tolerance than people on the East Coast who were probably inducted into the premium category with European wines. I would love to taste with Gary just to see if this may be a correct theory.

  • ALLAN

    Who gives a crap, Me!

As always the noble king has his congregation in mind. If I could make Gary give everyone deserving a shout out I would, but alas I feel this is beyond me. But you are correct, I (for once) had others in mind when I made my exclusive (West Coast) statement.

Under 30 usd? Difficult to say. In Belgium it’s hard to find good Napa Cab at this price. It’s even impossible. Generally spoken, good Napa Cap starts at +/- 48 usd (for ex. Frogs Leap). For very good quality (for ex Shafer one point five Napa 2007) you pay easily 75 usd. In the ‘lower’ price range, the best US cab I tasted last year was the Laurel Glen Samoma 2004. But that’s not a Napa… and if I convert euro into USD, the price of this wine was about 39 usd.

Okay, share the wealth :-)Where are you getting it for that price?

I recently had the 2008 Louis Martini in a 5 cab blind tasting and I, and the other taster, both thought it was a 90 point wine and it cost $11 at Costco. Unbelievable deal in my opinion. I also recently enjoyed 2008 Ghost Pines (Napa/Sonoma) ($15).

    Nice show by the way.

Justin Regular Cab. QOTD for Gary!….If the Jets had made the Superbowl and you were one of the fans that thought you had tix only to find out you didn’t when you arrived, is there ANYTHING that would make it right for you?

  • Anonymous

To be clear, the 2008 Martini I had was Sonoma.

    GV:

The Louis Martini is a deal for sure. The show didn’t suck today. I’d score it an 86.

I’m right with you on this one cellarrat. There was just something about this 5 min quickie that was far superior to the others. Maybe it was the side-by-side thing. 😉

  • QOTD Best Napa cab I’ve had under $30 comes from a little-known producer called “Relativity Vineyards”…All sourced fruit with a non-disclosure agreement. Their ’06 Mt. Veeder cab is mind boggling…Found it at Gramercy Wine Cellars on 19th and 3rd ave in Manhattan. (They also make a Pritchard Hill cab for $50 that is easily in the ballpark of some of the cult producers)

  • Unfortunately you can’t get it anymore, but the Havens Cab was pretty solid and under $30.

  • Leatherpalate

Mondavi or Beringer. Strange- thought your were going to pan the bejesus out of these wine and then you pulled back a little…

Great Show Brother. You were really bringing it and I’m Like’n the content and the side-by-side. A little “Thunder” but not all the way there. Maybe it’s because I just finished the James Suckling video and there was “THUNDER” all over the place in that. That was HAPPEN’N!

I have had this Louis Martini and still have a bottle or two laying down. Love this a lot! Glad to see you give it an 89 and RP 91. Everyone whom I have talked to that has had this has LOVED it. The “FYOOZ” sounds real nice also. I will have to be on the lookout for this. I know I can still get the LM 2007 and I think the 08′ is out also, not as good.

QOTD: Can’t think right at this moment. I’ll have to lament about this for awhile and get back to you on this. This Louis Martini has really been there though.

I wish to change my position back to my former title, ‘Power behind the
    throne’.

QOTD; In the past I would say the Nine Points, but the last one left me wanting something else. So I don’t know.
    Good show.

  • Anonymous

The 08′ not as good. Get the 07′, it is the real deal. That is if you like the Cabs.

The Avalon is nice for the price.

Was tasted on the Suckling video and they loved it! 😉

Really! What happened to the old Allan, Mr. Sarcasm! He gets another shoutout and he has gone all soft on us. 🙁

  • Hey Gary-thought the show today was ok, but I’m not a huge fan of the 5 min shows, for me, the best WLTV episodes have been the 30 min blind tastings of 5-6 wines!

  • QOTD: Nothing. Haven’t really purchased any Cali-cabs in the last 12 years. Overpriced in all price categories

Bigvine 07 Napa cab. 15 bones and VERY tasty.

  • i had Louis martini cab and was not impressed even at $12, i did llike Duckhorn Decoy Cab at $20 and Chateau Ste Michelle Indian Wells 2008 at $14 (costco) but my wife’s real favorites are Tom Eddy Elodian 2005 and Mollydooker 2009 Maitre D…these are great and under $30…..

  • I haven’t had enough California Cab to know what I like best yet, but great show as usual.

  • I like your style.

  • diggin the Double Bottle Pour….

solid show but almost, almost, almost seemed like you were trying to make sure you came in close to 5mins….I’m just sayin’

  • Anonymous

Glad you asked. I really like the Twenty Rows cabernet 2007. Wherever I bring it, people are impressed.

  • Clo Du Val which sells at Costco for around $24.

  • Anonymous

Joel Gott at $16 while simple goes well with food and doesn’t drain the wine budget. I like this format. Martini always has a redwood taste to me like the old vats that were used in the 70’s and before so I never could cozy up to it. The Fuze sounded like the oak monster. So why haven’t we seen him come out?

  • have to admit, I have not tried many napa valley cabs, but I really like the 2007 Clos du Val.

  • Anonymous

QOTD; 06 Big Vine Napa Valley, 07 Roots Run Deep Napa Valley “Educated Guess,” 07 Hess Mount Veeder Allomi Vineyard. All under twenty bucks. Great stink nose on the Hess.

One of Gary’s recent guests recommended visiting the Hess facility for their art collection and the wine, haven’t been, so now it’s on the top of my to-do list (not the chore one, the fun one).

Oak monster a no show. Interesting turn of events.

  • GV
I liked the 5 minute head t head, but I really lve gd guests.

    QOTD
Beringer 2006 & 2008 Knights Valley Cab in at only $15

  • Format doesn’t work for me. Well, not the format; there’s nothing disagreeable about putting two wines head to head. The length of time doesn’t work for me, though. Getting to spend a minute and a half on each wine? Things are rushed significantly.

An episode this brisk is not something I’d like to see much more of in the future.

  • Cool format, look forward to more like it.

QOTD: I second the 07 Roots Run Deep “Educated Guess”

  • Todd

QOTD: Great question, I don’t buy hardly any american cab, especially napa. I just haven’t tasted enough napa cab at that price, I need to be, but so much great stuff, so little time.

  • Anonymous

atlas peak 04,steals the show for <30. bones,I'll have a pizza w/ louie martini on any night.

  • The infamous Oak Monster didn’t show up? I like the H2H though a tad “short” for my blood.

QOTD: 1) Raymond Reserve 2) Beringer work well for me.

    Cheers!

P.S. I visited the Martini winery in Napa and they were very nice down-to-earth folks.

  • QOTF: Nice call DrinkandTrade! Honig Cab has been so solid over the years—my first reaction as well.

I used to drink a lot of the Souverain Cabernet, easy to find in a pinch, especially in grocery stores.
