Line of the day – ‘I start making kangaroo references that piss off Australia.’

Always love these on location episodes although could’ve done with Mott at the beginning when the light wasn’t right, GV looked like he was in a shadow.

  • Congrats Gary on 5 great years!

QOTD: Still love the beginning videos on wine glasses, getting your palet trained, what vintages mean, how to taste wine, & decanting wine that I make students in my wine class at Virginia Tech watch. Also the episode with Laura Catena is great especially since it happened 2 days before a local tasting of many of the Catena wines.

Hope you will some day make it down to Virginia Tech.

Gary – CONGRATULATIONS!! 5 years and 989 shows is just an immense achievement. I hope you have allowed youself at least a moment to reflect on the last 5 years and put it all into perspective. You started out as a maverick looking to shake up the staid and conservative wine world, became a “viral” phenom with a growing fan base and emerging show style, and are now truly an established pillar of the modern wine world – boasting guests like Jancis Robinson, Kermit Lynch and James Suckling – all wanting to connect with the Vayner-nation to discuss serious wine… WOW! Not Bad 🙂

QOTD – favorite episode. So many great shows it is REALLY hard to pick just one. If pushed I think I would go with #148 – “How to get your wine palate trained”. A masterpiece – very Gary V, excellent serious message combined with crazy frantic delivery combined with hillarious moments that still makes me laugh today. Closely followed by the Kermit Lynch and Jancis Robinson episodes – both wine rock stars that did great shows.

Congrats Again Gary – roll on episode 1K and the 10 year anniversary 🙂

    Cheers!

Hard to pick one. Either the first Sasha episode, or an episode that turned me onto Sojourn or Black Kite, or maybe the first Wine Cellar episode. Thank you for the 5 years!

Congratulations on five years. Your videos have been a huge part of the Virginia Tech Geography of Wine class. Can’t wait for your visit to Blacksburg, VA.

As a new Vayniac, I was so happy and relieved to hear that this wasn’t the end. I know everyone else feels that way, too. Let’s see some cool guests and contests as the thunder contiues!
QOTD: I like whenever you rinse more than twice because you forgot whether you had yet.

    Hi Gary,
Congrats with the first 5 years!
My favorite episode was the tasting in the snow storm and the tasting with Nicolas Joly. And seeing your Dad, of course.
    Greetings from Copenhagen, Denmark, and

Congratulations, and keep on going!! Favorite moment, well. . . “I give the dirt a 91, the ’99 Cristal an 87.”

  • Ok, the show was just alright, but the QOTD is a great one.

QOTD: It has to be from the first time I stubled upon WLTV. You were talking about a couple of WA wines and there was a cab from Woodward Canyon (if I’m remembering correctly) that you said was going to “swan out” over the next couple of years. Then you talked about how Mott was the master of that play.. getting in good with the tall, slightly awkward girls, and staying friends with them until they become knock-outs around 17-19 so you can date them… It was the best, and I was immediately hooked.

Archer is fantastic. It is everything Bond wished he could be!

  • Thanks for five awesome years Gary, watching episode after episode inspired me to (finally) start my own little wine blog. Your enthusiasm and pure joy at sharing wine with us is infectious. Can’t wait to see 1000 episodes and many more years of crushing it!

I will try and make this as brief as possible, but I fear that might not happen. For starters, most people (including myself) that claim to be “experts” are not. The wine industry is so multi-faceted and diverse that even the most seasoned worldly wine savvy individuals (the hardcore followers/tasters, trade professionals, winemakers, negotiates, media personalities etc. etc.) or people who have actually made wine for years still have overwhelming amounts of knowledge to absorb. My recommendation is to do exactly what I did and first seek out people who enjoy wine and have a similar passion to you regarding tasting, learning and living wine. Secondly there are “palette training” kits that one can buy that can help push you in the right direction, Google them online and read up on them before you consider purchasing one, there are impostors out there. Seeking out the actual foods associated with wine “flavors” is also a great way to start. I would also recommend (depending on where you live) seeking out wine appreciation classes, or various other university extension classes if that is an option to you. There are innumerable amounts of resources that you can take advantage of if you know where to look. Home winemaking or interning/volunteering at a winery might be something to consider as well if you have that at your disposal. I have barley scratched the surface regarding one of many possible beginnings you could undertake, and I am sure many other people on this site could give you much better ideas/starting points. Ultimately as long as you expand your senses, widen your knowledge of wine in general and meet interesting and informative people along the way and maybe make a few friends; the details are less important. Debating the finer points of winemaking and the wine industry can be like debating politics and religion to some, and can be equally frustrating. Keep in mind at all time if it stops tasting good and being interesting and informative you may be doing something wrong. PROST!

  • QOTD: How To Get Your Wine Palate Trained. – Episode #148

Congratulations on WLTV’s 5th anniversary. Looking forward to Episode 1000! It better ROCK!!

Great episode, although a little unconventional, a fitting episode to have on the 5th anniversary. This episode in many ways embodies what you were and are trying to do regarding WLTV. Expanding peoples knowledge and senses in an entertaining and informative way (the Gary V packs) while simultaneously reaching out to a community and embracing new forms of communication and connection. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING GARY. You are one of the reasons why I am passionate about my own humble involvement in the wine industry.

QOTD: Too many to list in one QOTD but some of the highlights were Heidi Barrets episodes, Kermit Lynchs epic, the Bhuler phenomenon, a couple of the epic debates/typing shouting matches I have had with a few of the more “vocal” Vayniacs, Our recent West Coast Vayniac meet up turned drunken yelling match between myself and a much respected Vayniac (who deserves a shout out more than most). The list could go on…………….

Do some research for online classes. I took some classes at the local Junior College but it depends on what part you want to get into. There are many wine students watching and commenting, so you’re in the right neighborhood right here. Good luck.

  • Loved this episode! So interesting to see behind the scenes of the tasting room.
QOTD: My favorite moments involving the show: sitting at the bar of the restaurant I worked in after we closed watching your show on the laptop with the chef and bartender….we would go crazy for the “oak monster” and “poopie on the nose”! Good times!

Fedt at se andre danske vayniacs 🙂

  • Your the man Boyer, had you in 05 for the World Regions class, by far the most entertaining of my time in the burg. Glad to see you forcing the kids to watch the show, would reccomend the first 125 or so as the better shows, imo. Will have to try your wine bar that someone mentioned you opened up recently next time we are around campus. Hopefully your “research” on drinking continues to go well.

This is an awesome day. Thank you for all the great years.

qotd;I gotta say the best memory was meeting you and having the opportunity to drink some wine together over dinner ,just hanging out and talking, the time you spent, it showed you are as genuine as you seem. Thanks

  • Congrats on the 5 years.

QOTD: Buehler was classic, Joly, Charles Smith, tasting outside in a snow storm, and of course Mott and Sascha making appearances. Let’s taste some Gdamn wine!

  • Anonymous

Many congrats, GV – looking forward to #1000, too. You’ve been an inspiration.

QOTD: Any episode with Sasha and cheese. You make love to the camera, he perfectly forgets that it’s there. The two of you are magic.

  • Charlotte K. Jensen

    what could it be?

QOTD: I’m torn between brown-bags and or when you have great guests either from viewers or cool winemakers.

Tip of the hat to the show.

  • Gary V: Oh man, a little bit of me and a S***load of you has changed the wine world and we like it, we like it a lot!

QOTD: Easy…#148. That episode is the best and I have watched it a dozen times. “There’s a party in my mouth…don’t get crazy.”

  • Charlotte K. Jensen

Ha ha. Its Rasmus. I know that guy. Gonna follow U guys. And good luck with that.

Total grineren da jeg læste dit indlæg. Inden jeg så linket tænkte jeg: Ha, kender da en, som har gjort det inden jer (det var inden jeg vidste, at Rasmus var en af jer) for vidste da, han havde lavet noget julekalender.

Sounds very possible. Also to Denmark.

  • Randall

    Worldwide, baby!

I’m new to the show and have only watched a handful of episodes, but all of them have been great and are really helping me get into wine.

Also, CKC from Virginia Tech here! Your show has been awesome for our 500 person wine class. It would be great to get you down here.

  • Congrats Gary!! Five years in web time has gotta be like 100 years in real time. Thank you so much for all you have done and given the wine community. It is pretty stunning really.

QOTD: This question has had me stumped for about 24 hours. I finally decided the Kermit Lynch episode(s) maybe my favorite. He just had some incredible stories and I thought your interview was superb.

    Happy Anniversary!

Got a great treat this weekend as I was driving home from a buddy’s wedding and listening to neuro lectures on cd to get ready for a test this friday, I was switching cds and what do I hear in taking one cd out and putting another in? GV on NPR, awesome! That was a great reason to take a break.

QOTD: Who didn’t love the Oak Monster?!

  • Curls_CDN

    Congrats Gary!

    QOTD – #148 was fantastic… epic… quintessential Gary Vee….

  • Congrats on five years. Come to Blacksburg VA and we can show you how to celebrate. #CKC VT

    Gary and Associates,
    Congratulations on five, “Fruitful” years!

I an a bit of an NPR addict, and on Saturday I was so happy to hear not only Gary, but HOTDAMN! a Merlot tasting on my radio. Vaniacs, check that out. Mott, Link. That. Up.!

QOTD; Pick one??! Seriously? Today was pretty good. I was impressed with Tastingroom’s operation. Looked like a damn clean room up in that place.
Otherwise, anything with your dad, and I like the Mott “Pickles” episode, although I can’t remember the number.

The old standard “Time in a Bottle” by Jim Croce. Just for you GV on the 5 Year Anniversary! 😉
    NOSTROVIA!

  • Happy 5 years GV

QOTD: I really liked the expanding you palette episode where you showed specific foods to try. Also, you had some awesome quotes about the oak monster I liked. “the oak monster completely kicked me in the nuts” was great.

But if you come to Blacksburg I can guarantee you that’ll be my favorite moment for the next 5 years!

  • John__J

Oh cool I carry St. Amant’s Zinfandel

  • John__J

So St. Amant? That’s cool, I carry their zinfandel where I work. I’ll have to see about checking out more from the St. Amant PORTfolio.
