Line of the day – ‘I start making kangaroo references that piss off Australia.’

Always love these on location episodes although could’ve done with Mott at the beginning when the light wasn’t right, GV looked like he was in a shadow.

  • Great 5 years Gary! Here’s to many more !

QOTD: episode 973, I know it was painful for you but misery loves company and it was a freaking hilarious show being a true football fan myself (GO EAGLES) and feeling your pain!

  • Anonymous

Loved the show and the wines looked awesome but I am extremely upset that they can’t send wines to texas. Seriously, whatever law that is preventing that needs to be repealed because I really want to try them out, even without the awesome deal.
Qotd: It has to be the expanding your pallete episode where you pulled out all those random foods and other things to show us how you learned. It was disgusting and amazing all at the same time.

  • Globex

thank you for sharing yourself with us over these past 5 years. You’ve made it fun to learn more about the world of wine.

QOTD: Sasha pulling out left-over sandwiches from the night before that he bought at a corner market when your mom was out of town. Enjoying good wine and breaking bread with his son… it’s moments like these that are priceless, and why I have enjoyed the show. Don’t change!!

It has been a kick ass 5 years, Gary. To see where you, the show, the guests, the many friends of WLTV & WL have come and grown is mind blowing. Hell, we watched you become a Dad on this show. Like many others, I feel emotionally attached and fear the day when it shuts down. But, I will live in the present and enjoy every episode as well as e-mails, wine club clips, etc. that you’re offering up as they are all a learning experience. Thanks for that, Gary.

QOTD: There is no one moment. In my mind, every episode runs like a huge montage from ep. 1 to the present. There has been sad, funny, serious, educational, stinkers, and incredible. I’m just really glad that you’ve still got the mojo to keep it going because I’ve still got the interest level and don’t see that going away anytime soon.

  • I see you sporting the wedding ring… nice. Good for you. Honoring your woman — is totally cool.

If you are a port fan I highly recommend it.

  • Big G, Five years and oh so many great wines and great episodes. I’m so happy you have continued to bring the thunder and just give give give. Thank you for sharing with us so much. Not just about wine, but so many other things like loving family and giving back and pushing yourself to be great. You have been a great addition to my life and I sure appreciate it.

QOTD: Hate to be a Homer, but all of them.

  • Anonymous

WOW! Five years, it has been an enjoyable run. Hope you do continue but not at the expense of your family. They are only little for a short time!

QOTD: Kermit Lynch was good and certainly the episode where you taste ALL the food but my favorite would have to be Jancis Robinson, I love the “bee in my bonnet”

  • Anonymous

Gary: OK, you finally got me to stop lurking. I’ve been watching since before Episode 148 but have never left a comment (mostly because I download from iTunes). At the five-year point, I HAVE to thank you for making a huge difference in my life and turning me into a wine-guy. I hope you keep going with WLTV even though it’s obvious you are crazy busy with other stuff.

Durint your “Crush It” tour, we met in L.A. when I had you sign “Crush It” for for me. Inspired by you– and wine — I am making my owne wine now — will be ready to drink by the end of the year. I owe it to you, man! Thanks for five great years.

QOTD: I would have to say Heidi Barret is at the top. The first Joshua Greene interview was really good, too.

  • Randall

    Second the motion…

  • Randall

I see you also like to have pun in life…

  • Randall

    Oh Yes He Finally DID!

Thank you Sir Christopher, for correcting my error…

  • Randall

Which one(s)? On second thought, never mind… you can’t go wrong with Any of them!

  • Congrats dude!

QOTD: The episodes with Sasha are great but my favorite moments thus far came when you sat with Charles Smith. THAT SHIZ WAS CRAZY!

  • Congrats Gary for the 5 years! Many more to come!
QOTD: Kermit Lynch episode, followed by the one with Rajat Parr. Burgundy!!!

  • Anonymous

    Great five years

  • This was awesome!
QOTD: I really don’t know. There are so many great little moments that I have taken with me and I find myself using some of your phrases without even thinking about them.

Look at the ever-expanding brain on this guy. Way to shatter those misconceptions.

The point about aging whites is excellent. This is most true of well ranking white Burgundies, finer California and some Australian Chardonnays in particular. Special German whites such as Rieslings are also included as well as white based dessert wines and high-end Champagnes of course. Here we are often talking about dramatic changes in richness and complexity when speaking of well produced wines that are designed for aging. Many of such whites can sit for a decade, very exceptional ones can supposedly go on for 20+ years. Part of the trick about aging whites in particular has to do with storage. Good wines can bomb hard if improperly stored. It’s believed by many that whites should be stored at a temperature that is significantly below temperatures that many reds can get away with. Even below room temperature is thought to be ideal. There are actually very fancy and special cooling appliances designed specifically for storing whites as if they are a mild version of a refrigerator that houses a wine rack.

Way to go on defining your terms! When somebody says something like ‘Burgundian’ as a descriptive term – in what sense? Exactly. Way to go. Some people may think of something as ‘Burgundian’ in a different sense, but you didn’t let that happen, did you? Great job.

The ‘Merlot’ joke phenomenon is also very interesting in terms of the way it has actually shaped people’s opinions in the wine world. At the time, if you were writing ‘sideways,’ the California-Merlot saturation was perhaps something of an easy target for mocking to say the least. To say a little bit more would suggest that, depending on your perspective – Merlot may have been a bit too dominant or something of a California cliche. So, on some level, the Merlot joke may have served a good purpose for 2004. Since then it feels that Pinot has been quite privileged by comparison, also a direct result of the impact of the movie, ‘sideways.’ At the time I expected the popularity of Pinot Noir to take off, while I also expected to see winemakers all over the place trying to capitalize and perhaps force Pinot in climates that aren’t exactly cool enough for it – not naming any names (cough – California…). So I expected a bunch of Northern Cal Pinot as well as new Pinot to spring in the coming decades; some of it not exactly the finest Pinot, but also maybe some of it very thumbs up. In the end, it’s interesting how the ‘sideways’ Merlot gag effected pretty much everyone on a level. But, again, we are passionate enough to see beyond that stereotype.

Not to go out of my way to drop a negative on Oprah, but Oprah recommendation – kind of saw that coming. It’s almost as if the Oprah recommendation is the mark of something that is fashionable, maybe a little higher end, but ultimately disappointing. I’m still waiting to be proven wrong on this one. If you think you have something, get at me, prove this thesis wrong. I’d like to see that.

Looking forward to that. Great news.

  • 5 years, now on to 1,000 shows!
QOTD: My favorite was when you dissed my cheesy spit bucket (but gave me a great shameless plug)

  • Happy 5 years. And a big thank you for all the knowledge and passion you have brought to my wine world. The Kermit Lynch shows were one of my favorites. After visiting his store I’ve reflamed my passion and can’t thank you enough for that.

Just found out that I’m getting your book for a birthday present. (shipping out March 10ish)
Great episode and happy 5 years. Looking forward to seeing what’s in store for the next 5 years

  • Randall

If only I was correct! But alas… It’s probably never going to happen. 🙁

  • garym

Great job. Lets see, about 200 episodes a year, that’s one show every 1.82 days.
I think one “Customer Appreciation Episode” per mo. would be about right.
You said “want in” in Dec. 2010. Lets do it!

Gary Happy 5th Anniversary, its been a great run!
QOTD: This is easy for me, its episode #226 in which you give my boy’s video parody of you a shout out (WLTV the Lost Episode).

Best moments for us was the Thunder Cruise. We were on board and got to meet a bunch of the Vaniancs and all were wonderful people. I wish you could do it again or something similar. Lets go for another thousand episodes and I dare you to put together another ‘party’ for all the Vaniacs.

  • ALLAN

The best moment? the whole damn thing! :))

Hey Gary, congratulations on 5 years of WLTV and thank you for bringing us so much thunder!

QOTD: The highlight for me is easy – Episode #324 because I sent you the wines! 😉

  • Here’s to another great 5 years! As much as I love the brown bag video’s, to me, I enjoy watching for more than just wine information. I think your one of the good guys out there who busted ass to make it to where you are. I applaud and respect that Gary! Can’t wait for the new book to arrive. Thanks for everything, god bless.

Congratulations!!! You really deserve a LOT of credit for being around this long, Gary. I can’t wait to see # 1000. This is the not just the best wine-blog in the world, it’s THE best blog, period.
QOTD: Weirdest show has to something like 607 (I like weird), but my favourite moment has to be the jalapeno/dirt/Kristal combo which ends 148. Or when Jancis Robinson tells you that candy is a “bad” flavour in wine….or whenever Josh Greene is on,,,

  • ALLAN

    No, it’s the truth

  • Anonymous

    Congrats gary!

QOTD : Without a doubt, the discovery of WLTV, the first episode I watched, and then the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, … until very late at night…

Awesome job on 5 yrs, looking forward to whatevers left of your run.

QOTD: Two memories about WLTV and the community. When you were at Bob Parker’s master tasting how reserved you were because you had to be so quiet. Best memory was going to the Chicago offline, lots of cool people, great wines, and fun times! Bastards drank all my clio before I got a taste…

#607 was a BLAST! I couldn’t stop laughing through the whole thing! I’M LAUGHING RIGHT NOW JUST THINKING ABOUT IT! 🙂

    Happy Birthday
QOTD: Certainly the first episode that I saw — I believe was in the 600’s. I immediately thought “holy crap there is someone out there that is this great and this exposed for our entertainment and education” I have not missed an episode since and refresh my server often open to WLTV to get the fresh episode. Yes it is always you (and sometimes a great guest) but it is never boring and I always learn something and am continually motivated to expand my wine collection and introduce others. From a lurker for a long time — great job and happy birthday!!!

  • You should see him on a Texas hog hunt with his AR-15!
