Line of the day – ‘I start making kangaroo references that piss off Australia.’

Always love these on location episodes although could’ve done with Mott at the beginning when the light wasn’t right, GV looked like he was in a shadow.

  • Congrats on 5 years!!!! You should come to Virginia Tech, and celebrate!!!!

The winter outdoor tasting is one I will always remember. Possum on a grill brings back old descriptions I haven’t heard in a long time. As someone who has commented since the beginning, congratulations on 5 years and, as far as I’m concerned, 5 more would be great. Bought the first tasting pack and it was a great deal.

  • Anonymous

    Congratulations; keep em comin!
QOTD: When Sasha would veer into political territory.

Best episode was tasting wine in the elements – outside in the wind and cold – too funny.

You should come to Virginia Tech man! You know you stuff!

  • Congratulations on the 5 year run. Very much looking forward to seeing what’s in store for episode #1,000…

good show. interesting as to how they do those tasting packs. nice work on the five year deal though. you have brought me great joy as well as sadness with some of the really bad shows, but over all “im gonna score this gary 90+ points, and definitely not a major PAZZZZ.” ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ on the kosher wine show by the way, a REAL bore

Felicidades GV! Im starting to think im gonna try a pack.. or a few from Tasting Room. Its a great idea and one that I was similarly looking into starting a few years back prior to hearing about them… oh well, what could have been…

QOTD: I was hooked on your show ever since you described a wine as tasting like hot garbage, sitting in your car behind a garbage truck in NYC on a hot summer day, classic! Needless to say, I’ve gone back and watched nearly all of your shows, past and current, since then.

Keep u the good work and thanks for all the knowledge you’ve passed on to us. Now pop open some bubbley!!!

  • Congrats on 5 years! Virginia Tech will throw you a party 🙂

  • CKC Virginia Tech! Learned alot from watching your show…congratulations on 5 years!

  • WineCutter

QOTD: Tie between (1) the guest “de-can” and “snarf” episode and (2) the “This wine has more wood than a 9th grade gym class with pretty girls” episode. I think the tie would have to go with #2 since that one at least has Gary in it!

  • Rumor has it that wine tastes better at Virginia Tech, just people talking… they might have been drinking. Congratulations on 5 years!

I liked Gary’s comment @Jo Diaz, concise relatively confusing and to the point! I suppose I can understand why someone who has absolutely no knowledge of how Gary actually operates and how much work/heart/soul he pours into his professional and personal life could come up with a snap judgment like that. It seems that the topic of that discussion is similar in many ways to the “old world v New World” debate. People are going to like what they like, and in an industry like this with all its diversities and subtle nuances it is no surprise that people are sharply divided. As you know, I work at a small California winery. That being said, I go out of my way to explore new and interesting facets of the wine industry, all around the world. Granted, I cannot afford or do not have access to nearly as much as I would like; and I am very new to the world of wine and all it has to offer. But if one of my friends in California and I can disagree on a wines various elements so sharply, it is no wonder on the East Coast or anywhere in the world that people drink what they drink and keep getting/drinking it. Try as we might to expand our senses and reach out for the random, in the end we are fundamentally creatures of habit for the most part. Good to hear from you again BurroBoy!

GV- The first two years of WLTV were the golden years of the show. While you haven’t strayed far from the origins of the material or the formatting, nothing can compare to the rawness of momentum you were working to build. Who can forget the days of free shipping, wristbands, the couch, my appearance on the show via a tweet and the first highlights real. In that time I’ve become a Certified Sommelier and started my own wine business wishnouveau.com.

I found you via your ad in Wine Spectator about 100 episodes in. I quickly got caught up to speed by watching the previous 100. It was at the beginning of my love affair with wine, and about $4000 later (spent at WL) I could officially call myself a collector. The first bottles I bought were a 750 ml and 1500 ml. of Egelhoff Cabernet Sauvignon following the episode on his wine. I still have them today and I can’t wait to open them up. Unfortunately as a resident of Washington State, it has been quite some time since I’ve been able to make a purchase 🙁

GV-Thanks for all the entertainment and information you’ve provided me. Congratulations!

Congrats on 5 years GV. Still haven’t caught up on them all, but working on it.

What’s up with the “5 years” 1 cent shipping promotion on the pack? I type in 5 years and I still get $10.29 for shipping to NYC.

  • nah, Sahsa would have brought the house down, but me I would like to meet Garys mom, I think that would have crashed the site 😀
Good work for 5 years Gary, really good.

  • Randall

    Two more words, amiga…
    “bite” and “me”.

    :D!!

p.s. How’s your latest painting coming along? I haven’t seen any updates lately. Just wondering…

  • ALLAN

Are you always THIS boring, where’s the revolution, MAN!

  • Randall

I wish I knew. Maybe another Wine Library party there in NYC again?

  • 889?

  • thanks so much for everything you’re doing for us pal, this goes way beyond just wine…you’re inspiring dozens of people every single day. Thank YOU !

  • hey CR5! Thing is I like Jo’s blog, and check it out semi-regularly…just think that comment was really off base. I agree, we are creatures of habit, who like to inhabit comfort zones…that’s why we need to focus on making expansion and adventure the norm. I’ve been commenting regularly, and reading everyone else’s, but have been too swamped to really engage, but hope to do better in the near future.
Be well, and get back to racking!

  • Hey Vee,

You’ll be shortly receiving a wonderful video from the depths of Blacksburg, aka John Boyer’s Geography of Wine class. Effectually, I only hope that you’ll consider our campus for your Mr. Universe Tour.

  • ALLAN

Bring the F”’ing thunder G, NOW!

Just because you’ve reached five years dead, don’t mean you need to go dead on us!

  • The revolution would be Gary’s mom in the show telling you to behave 🙂

  • In ep. 100 long time ago you’ve said, that first you’ve planned only 100 of WLTV 🙂
5 years is definitely more than that – Good decision. Keep up the great work !
    Cogratulation on 5th anniversary!

  • Loved the tour and hearing about Tasting Room. Fascinating company and what they’re doing is awesome!!
QOTD: Learning nerdy details about new grapes, regions, wine-making techniques, etc. from around the world. If that’s too lame an answer, Episode 148.

  • hey thanks castello

  • Mick Walsh

QOTD: I guess the first time I saw the show, about 18 months ago – knew I was onto something good. Would love to be able to do more to support you guys, but Dublin Ireland is a world away from everywhere these days, in every sense. Love the show, congrats on five great years, and YES, TYE on pre-order in my local bookshop, believe it or not!

    To preface the post,
Ive been lurking for almost two years now, waiting, just waiting for that opportunity to enter blog-style. A couple hundred episodes and a renewed sense of intrawebs social participation later, here it is.
Congrats on 5 years!!! Northern Illinois loves you…well, the people here do anyways.
Btw, dont change the format, everything youve been doing for the past five years has been SOLID. Keep on with it. 5 minutes, 10, 18, 85, whatever the time frame happens to be, its all good regardless.
Looking forward to 1000! Damn man, you must be getting old now.

Congrats on 5 years! Thanks so much!!

  • Charlotte K. Jensen

    Hmmm, not interested.

  • Randall

Gary… If you can resist this, I only have One thing to say…

  • Randall

    Hahahaha!!!

  • Randall

C’mon, Charlotte! I’m trying to get you and Allan and AndersN and other Scandinavian/EU fans over here for the “Vayniac Wine Summit and Americana/Roots Music Live Show” in Las Vegas in October. You can fly through NYC to get to Vegas… with a stopover at Wine Library! It’ll be FUN!!

  • Gary, love the show. Check out this new intro from VT!

  • QOTD: My favourite gary v moment was definitely when you were tasting Canadian Ice Wine and you came up with “an autobody shop pelted with 1 million peaches” that was my moment, that is what keeps bringing me back and that is hat makes me tell the world about how awesome the Thunder Show really is.

    You rock!

  • Anonymous

Congratulations on 5 years! I apparently didn’t get my email about the episode being up. Of course, I then have almost an entire week of senior moments before I realize it’s Thursday and I haven’t watched a single WLTV! I have not been drinking enough wine! 😉
QOTD: Only one? Man, that’s hard. The parking lot in the winter tastings (there were a couple, one with high winds) were particularly memorable.

  • Neil McNamara

    Happy 5 Year Anniversary WLTV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My wife and I were up in Sonoma and Napa last weekend…..too bad we didn’t run into you but knowing how you roll you were probably dining at the French Laundry….

QOTD: My favorite episode was 148 and/or 182. I can’t say I’ve seen all of them but definitely up there. I also liked the one with Joanne Colan.

  • Anonymous

Wow, this is a tremendous accomplishment, one you should be proud of and one I am glad to be a very small part of. You have shared so much with us and I hope you continue to educate and enlighten me on many many more wines.

QOTD – Wow – to only pick one would probably be any of the episodes with your dad. This should be taken into consideration of many outstanding episodes where you have explored the history of wine and guests that were a part of that history.

Congratulations and looking forward to at least five (5) more years.
