Killer Show! You guys are definitely Rock’n It! There is major “Thunder” going on, but I don’t know if it is just from the the great personalities or the more they drink the better it gets.

  • Charlotte K. Jensen

    where did my comment go?

  • Charlotte K. Jensen

Anyway, just said well spotted on my favorite wines. Been trying a bit of Australian in general and I must say, not that big of a fan. The only producer that keeps impressing me is Wohlmuth and have not had their riesling yet. But riesling from Alsace on the other hand, ohh yes.
what are U drinking, except your precious Bordeaux?

  • Anonymous

    lol, awesome.

  • Anonymous

I am enjoying the Bordeaux as you said and Pinot Noir. I need to get more into Burgundy though, have a few sleeping. The Loire Valley has been getting a lot of play as of late also.

How was your trip to Barcelona? On Holiday or work?

  • QOTD1: I haven’t heard of it…
    QOTD2: let’s hope.
    QOTD3: No Austrian Rieslings yet.
QOTD4: Oh Absolutely, Sparkling is good any day.

I likewise think we knocked it out of the park. lol, sent the vid to my s/o (the date in my story), and she apparently laughed to the point of tears. hahaha, good times.

Gary, my apologies, I tried to send an email but I couldn’t get past the security word. If you would like to respond (either here or email) I would greatly appreciate it. This is what I wrote:

    Gary,
My question to you stems from my very “green” experiences with wine. My best friend is a wine rep in Kansas City and I have been exposed to different wines on a weekend basis. However, I’m confused. I’ll preface this with an analogy.

I don’t know anything about dogs but this should hold true for the question. When they judge dogs, they base each breed based off a preconceived definition of what it should be like. When i smell/ taste different wines, I don’t know what each varietal should taste like to pick up the different nuances that each bottle brings.

So, are there certain vintages/bottles that brings what each one should be based off of? One “staple” bottle of wine that says, “this is what a Cab should smell/taste like” From there, we can experience that “staple” bottle and judge every other bottle based off that varietal accordingly?

Because, what if I taste a $7 bottle of Pinot Noir that tastes more like a Cab or Merlot (not saying it will). Then i try and base other Pinots off that one experience and I’m more lost than when i started.

Hopefully my question wasn’t too confusing. I’m basically looking for the base components that each varietal should bring to the table so I can expand my pallet and be more knowledgeable.

    Thanks,

    BH

lol, like I said on the boards, I got extra points for awesome.

  • Anonymous

hahaha, “yep, don’t you drink Champagne every Thursday??”

  • Anonymous

I won’t say it’s the best Cali Cab I’ve ever tasted, but it was close. I think Gary was being a little shy with the rating–I’d go 94-95. If I weren’t tapped with mailer purchases I’d probably order at least a bottle to put away for a few years. It’s still definitely a baby.

  • Charlotte K. Jensen

Burgundy is legend. Big fan. And Loire has got some really nice value plays in my opinion (not just Sancerre).

The trip was great. But not enough time. Too much G&Ts and other stuff that made the trip really crazy. Just quit my job to do my master thesis. Lots of things going on πŸ™‚

  • Anonymous

lol, do you really think anyone other than the wine pros in that room would spit any of that stuff? No way.

  • Anonymous

haha, I was like a deer in headlights trying to pick out a bottle. At the end of the day price doesn’t necessarily sway me, so I just went with what I thought was going to be awesome. Unfortunately it was a bit of a disappointment, but them’s the breaks.

I’m wondering if the Kathryn Hall ever opened up later that night.

  • DaveAll

good show. these four were unknowns, so guess I should pay attention more or they newbies?. smile.
(Kmurph was hot in the background!)
    Qotd: yes!
    Qotd: ?
    Qotd: how caes
    Qotd: actually many.

Like it…another great episode and it makes me really want to hang with everyone if I get up to that area again.
Qotd’s: No I have not heard of kahuna’s wine and food shop. I still think the Jet’s don’t have enough experience to win the superbowl next year but definite possibility in 5 years if they stay track. No I have not had any Austrian rieslings and I would like to but the reason why i don’t is its not my all time favorite and I don’t buy wine enough to get into all the time and I have to prioritize some. As for the champagne comment (btw best comment ever gary lol), I don’t get that at restaurants much because i’m too cheap to buy real champagne a lot due to ckc thing. But I get from my friends when I buy bubbly from other regions. For me, I tend to do it more for hot weather and pool/beach side type times or events more.

  • Anonymous

You probably meant another Gary ;), but I’ll toss out an answer. I had the same question years ago, and I guess it can only be answered by you tasting different wines at different price points. Eventually you settle in on the common factors of the various varietals or blends and eventually have certain expectations.

What might be extremely helpful is coordinating or attending tastings with friends. Have a “Cabernet” night. Then a Merlot. Bordeaux. You get the idea. Have several bottles to taste through and discuss.

    Just a suggestion.

QOTD1: Never been to Kahuna’s food and wine
QOTD2: Don’t know much about the Jets’ chances next year
QOTD3: Never had an Austrian Riesling, been focusing on Germany lately
QOTD4: I do drink sparkling wine for non-celebratory reasons because it goes well with so many food

Thanks for the insight. I had a feeling that jumping in with both feet would be the answer, I just needed to hear it.

    Thanks again,

    QOTD1: No.
    QOTD2: Don’t know or care.
    QOTD3: Yes. Not sure.
    QOTD4: Yes, but not enough.

    Good fun.

Really fun show – as were the last two. I can feel the energy jumping off my screen! Congrat’s to you all.

    QOTD:
    1. Kahuna jams, but never been there
    2. No, because they are the Jets and they are just as jinxed as the other Green team, the Eagles.
    3. Yes, but don’t ask me to name them
    4. No, but only because I don’t get to hang with “common sewers” like you guys

BTW, does DRod remind anyone of a famous Hawaiian surfer dude/musician extraordinaire?

  • Anonymous

I should have thrown out a “Mott link it up” after my plug… but I don’t think Chris would have appreciated it! LOL..

For those that asked: Kahuna’s Food and Wine – http://kahunasfoodandwine.com/
enjoy! We need to get Pat taping some more episodes, maybe increased traffic will be the inspiration.

Great show guys. Wished I could have made it down ……… c’est la vie. Really nice choice of wines. I would have loved to have tried the Valbuena and Monte Bello.

K’s Wine and Food rocks …… I’ve even made a few of the recipes he’s done.
    Jets suck .
Drank plenty of Austrian wines …. but usually Gruners or Blaufrankisch
I like Champagne and Franciacorta occassionally. I don’t do sparkling.
