EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

2008 Jerome Prevost La Closerie Les Beguines BrutFrench Brut Vintage

I am looking right now and about to choose. Difficult choices, lot a good ones! πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

That is too WLTV and we wouldn’t want that now would we? πŸ˜›

  • Anonymous

GV wants to get away from his roots (WLTV), it’s a whole new gig. I think he has said that in not so many words, but that is what I get from his writings. πŸ™

  • Anonymous

    Anything before 10pm and after 6pm! πŸ˜›

  • Good question. I just returned from the wine shop and here is my lineup with some timeframe.

’09 Don David Torrontes Reserve (ARG) & A to Z Pinot Gris (Drinking at this moment)
’05 Chat Larmande St Emilion (While I’m firing up the grille for my marinated flank steak)
    ’07 Antis Malbec Reserve (dinner)

    During the Final Four
’07 Barrel 27 Rock and Hard Place Grenache

    After Butler wins
I may pop open that “Date Night” cab that GV interviewed a few years back. Haven’t tried it yet, so this might be the time.

Hope all is well with my fellow Vayniacs. I miss them all.

    Cheers!

P.S. Just wish I had been chosen to join the throng of the Vayniacs during the final week celebrations so I could have met everyone face-to-face. Oh well.

  • I just went downstairs to the cellar and see I have an ’86 Dom (it could be dead) and a ’95 and ’96 Chat Ducru Beaucaillou that I believe was #1 WS. What to do?

  • Nahhhhhhhhh. WLTV was a non-event, irrelevant, why copy something that was a failure?

  • I think he’s made it pretty obvious and it’s understandable though it breaks our hearts.

    DG will be good.

  • Hmmm says my ’86 Dom saw the light many years ago. WTF, I’m opening it now.

  • This is amazing. I realize I’m talking to the wall right now but need to share just in case I get hit by a bus tomorrow.

I went downstairs and opened the ’86 Dominus. Needless to say, thank G-d I did. Here is what I wrote on cellartracker. If I could take a picture of this dark, inky, purple color you would be shocked. I was expecting it to be brick red.

    Notes
Though it has been 25 years, no, it can’t be 25 years since this wine has been bottled, but let me tell you, this wine is fabulous! Your atypical Dominus with notes of leather, chocolate and earthy undertones. Most of the currant has dissipated but this will still knock the socks off most wines you find today.

Stellar effort. I was apprehensive opening it, and glad that I did.

Gosh damn this is good juice! I have goosebumps right now, pretty much the same response when I first tasted an ’88 that blew me away.

Back to swirling and sipping. And yes, I’m having this with the flank steak, not some Malbec!

    Cheers!

  • Who are you calling a wall?

  • In this context, ‘not ready for prime time’ means that, though interesting or cool in some ways, something has too many flaws to be considered a finished product that will be accepted by the target audience. Kind of like something being in beta form and needing to work out the bugs before it can expect to be successfully launched. Launching somethings that’s buggy and asking users to ‘be patient’ can be a risky strategy, because some users who are dissatisfied with the early experiences leave and don’t come back when the ‘new and improved’ version does (hopefully) eventually appear.

That’s awesome and I’m not surprised actually. I had a guest where I work order an ’83 Dominus a few months back as it was their anniversary year. They had just had a Napa fruit bomb cab prior to that (I can’t remember what), and I tried to them that this wine would be quite different and would need to breathe (assuming it hadn’t peaked a long time ago).
They weren’t terribly interested in what I had to say, and just wanted me to get them their wine from their wedding year. Anyway I popped it for them and they didn’t seem too thrilled with it. I offered to take it back for them but they wanted to keep it. An hour later they left having only drank a glass worth and wanting a refund. I gave them a discount and put the wine up at the bar.
So maybe a half hour after that our Exec Chef came out as we were closing and I told him all this. He wanted to try it (Which I was definitely planning to do myself), and I’ll be damned if that wine hadn’t opened and was pretty damn good. Of course it had lost some of its fruit, but we were really impressed with how it held up. And I can tell you now that 83 certainly wasn’t a great year at all in Napa, in case you didn’t already know.

As a side note, I just read an interview with Christian Moueix in the current issue of Sommelier Journal and found out that 83 was the first vintage for Dominus, which I thought was pretty cool.
Maybe we were lucky and the other 83’s we have won’t hold up as well. They’ve certainly passed their prime, but I remember being quite surprised at how it stood up.
Now I have to double check and see if we have any of the ’86.

  • John__J

….And we do. You’ve got me tempted now Dominus.

  • John__J

qotd: 2002 Chateau Musar from Lebanon, (I know Lebanon, right?). I read an article about a vertical some fellow wino’s did from these guys a while back and was excited to see how amazingly long their reds and even whites hold up. They’re supposed to be of excellent quality too and have a little cult following. I finally ordered some for where I work and I’m scooping up 2 bottles for myself. One for now and 1 to lay down.

To The Faithful (TTF) of this site ….. way to keep it going over here. πŸ˜‰

Tonight I can not equal the 86 Dominus of Dominus, (JK) ….. but I will tell you that the Beringer 2008 Cab ($21) is not too bad πŸ™‚ ….. I’d currently rate it at 87-88 points and for those of you who like Napa Cabs, a wine that you should try. The wine is still young. The tannins softened up after a 2 hour decant and the wine drank quite well. This wine will improve with 3-4 years and then hit its peak window.

QOTD … Who has tried the latest Showket 07 or 08 ????? …. (not sure if the 08 has hit the market).

  • but no one can get away from the roots.
PASSION, unpredictability, new ideas all the time, one man show, wine sniffy sniffs, whirling, they are all the roots πŸ˜€

  • This is the stuff that make me jealous. Poppin old wine that is great. Well, I’m not jealos per se. I have old wines stored away too.
    Sounds marvelous.
Me I opened a Gigondas. Les PalliΓ¨res Les Racines 2007 . This is what a good Gigondas taste like, and smells like! Heavy of sweet cherry, herbs, some barnyard and a faint wiff of sweet licoroce at the back. Fruit upfront though, really nice. Taste is at first red and blue fruit, then some heat, like a pepper mix , tannins zingy and jam-like. Back end is blueberry jam meets white pepper and licorice. The taste lingers good, nice acidity . Drinkable now, very drinkable….gone.

You chose the 86′? Never believe what you see until you have popped the cork and sniffy, sniffed and sippy, sipped. What you wrote above was great. I didn’t think that it would disappoint and that is what I was going to write until I saw what you wrote above. I wish I was there sharing that with you right now! πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

Great Line-up! Hope the “Date Night” doesn’t disappoint.

  • Anonymous

That was a goooooood play. πŸ™‚

  • Anonymous

I just knew it wouldn’t disappoint!

    Nostrovia Brother! πŸ˜‰

There definitely is, but most of the episodes have focused on pretty common places. I have no doubt the future of the site is a great, and you’ll put out an amazing product. I think I wrote that before I watched the shell fish and Spain episodes though, which I think are the best two yet. You seemed really excited about all of those wine in those and it brought the best out of you.

  • NY Pete

good stuff Dom … keep bringing the thunder

  • I should try the ’08 Beringer tennispro. I may have a bottle or two of their reserves downstairs and could swear I paid a boatload more than $21. I visited their wionery a few years back and it was quite the treat. I believe they were bought out by Constellation but not sure.

I have not tried the Showket but will look it up.

    Cheers all!

P.S. Do you play tennis tennispro? I play quite a bit. Been to Wimbledon, US Open and French. Need to go to the Aussie Open to complete my bucket list.

  • An amazing story there John_J. Sorry to see those people abandoning that bottle but you were professional and fair about the entire ordeal which ends up being a godsend to you and your fellow associates. I was totally shocked how well it held up. Yes, fruit was pretty much gone but damn, what nuances, aromas, flavors this wine had that you don’t find anywhere else.

I need to read that article on Christian Moueix. Thanks for the enlightening story and info.

Cheers to Dominus (the wine of course)

  • I do too my man. I guess an open bottle doesn’t travel well? πŸ™‚

  • Butler in a close one. VCU wins the classiest-coach category.

  • NY Pete

    congratulations to Butler

    good call Dominus

  • Thx my man.

  • John__J

That article is in Sommelier Journal’s current issue. As far as wine mag’s go, I couldn’t recommend subscribing to that one more. It can definitely get really nerdy (which is great for me), but they got great interviews, etc. in it.

I always find Beringer to be a dependable wine for a decent price. I have enjoyed many vintages from them, but at one point a year or so back I came across a 96 that was still showing quite nicely.

  • Anonymous

I have had many Beringer wines over the years and they do age and drink well. Love their Reserve wines. This was just a quick weekend purchase. The Knights Valley stuff is quite good for the price. Not great but good πŸ˜‰

Yes I do play tennis. I’ve played from the juniors to high school then college and finally a bit of the challenger tournaments. Now I teach tennis as a career. My first big 4 tournament will be the 2012 Aussie Open. Maybe will be you there if you decide to go. πŸ˜‰ I see an Aussie wine tasting tour in our future …..

    QOTD … UConn or Butler

  • John__J

Just bought the new Wine & Spirits mag today, to check out their annual restaurant poll on wine. Saw they had some pretty cool quotes on pages 77,82 and 84 I think from this Sommelier guy working in Maryland.

  • Sounds like a plan to me. I had tickets to last year’s but unfortunately wasn’t able to go.

  • UConn big, unfortunately. Cheaters should never win IMHO though I will be rooting like a banshee for Butler.

    Cheers!

  • Stopped by to check to see if we got any mail and to make sure electricity hasn’t been cut off.

    We’re good for another day.

After work I’m heading off to the wine shop so should be interesting to see what is on the “menu” tonight. I hope I can find the ’08 Beringer and give my unadulterated notes on it.

    I’ll be back later.

    Cheers!

  • John__J:

I just bought the Sommelier’s Journal article about Christian Moueix and it was quite enlightening. Thank you for the recommendation.

There was alot of interesting facts about this down-to-earth gentleman. I am looking forward to his announcement about their new Oakville ranch. His goal in life? “The dream of producing a wine as elegant as a butterfly . . .”

    Cheers!

  • Mott

Make sure you lock the door and turn out the lights.

  • My man! How the hell are you? We miss you my friend, we miss you. πŸ™

  • Anonymous

We are never turning out the lights! We have to be able to come back and access the archives. It is all about reminiscing and about what once was! TTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

Too Bad it was a bad show on both parts! I couldn’t even finish watching the whole game.:( POORRRRRRR SHOOTINGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank goodness my fellow Colt fan is sticking it out. Hang in there, I’m not going anywhere.

Though tonight and tomorrow I’m “batching it” and perusing through my stash while having a little biut of this and a little bit of that. Tonight’s little gem comes is a white Cote du Rhone. Who would have thought? The notes from my wine shop. All for 10 bones too though to be honest, I don;t give a rat’s ass what it costs. 10 or 100 bones, if it’s good, i.e. rated by GV, WS or referred by a friend, I buy it. I know, I know, I’m very fortunate but don’t chastise me for it. Here’s my recommendation for today.

SOL’ ACANTALYS CDR BLANC 2009, FRANCE
A well framed white wine from the Rhone Valley. Offering an array of white fruits, with a mixture of spices, yellow flowers that all comes together to a lively and crisp white wine. A blend of Grenache Blanc, Bourboulec, Clairette, and Roussanne. Perfect for appetizers, with grilled fish, seafood, poultry, and goat cheese.

BTW, the ’86 Dom I opened the other night. One more glass remaining and it was stellar.

Cheers all and so excited to see Mott drop by earlier. I’m good now. πŸ˜‰ Anyone seen Randi?

  • NY Pete: We need our QOTD

  • Worst I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen many a game.

  • 1000th…wow. One word, inspiration.

  • Anonymous

    “Don’t Give A Rat’s Ass”! WAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YOU TELL IT LIKE IT IS DOMINUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

@Dominus, have a little affection for Randi do we? πŸ˜‰
