EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

  • Nice, very nice. You have a granddaughter? Great isn’t it?

I’m on my way this morning to a cooking demo with tons of wines and after yesterday evening’s pre-game Greek wines, a couple brews at the madhouse where we rocked the red, I’ll be dragging tonight.

Have fun with the little princess.

GO CAPS! Get out the broom (I hope)

    Cheers!

  • Cubatobaco (My Man) Ray got his shoutout! Yes!

  • Anonymous

Anders you know right where to hurt them! πŸ˜‰

  • Hang in there, Dominus. It’s probably best to just let it go. The new DG format elicits more comments overall and is attractive to a demographic that is more accustomed to the rapid “Ready … Fire … Aim?” approach to communications. Put those two together and the probability of getting an impulsive and uniformed comment aimed at you is going to be much greater at DG than it was at WLTV. That just seems like a side-effect of the audience GV’s going after now – aiming more for subway riders staring at their iPhones why being jostled around as opposed to somebody sitting in front of a computer with a glass of wine in his/her hand. Consider yourself (temporarily) collateral damage.

  • Agreed, Anders. I’ve been surprised that during the WLTV to DG transition the savvy, innovative businessman side of GV that worked hard to build both the WLTV and the GV brands appears to have been totally overwhelmed by the impulsive, new-is-better, side of his personality that makes him enjoyable to watch. I can understand that the DG concept could have a big up-side for the GV brand (books, speaking fees, “synergistic” business collaborations, etc.) and he may have felt more constrained in the WLTV days, but doesn’t the competence of the execution matter? At what point does constantly saying you’re sorry tip from being a sign that your a regular, human, empathetic guy to being an admission that you “jumped the shark” a bit, and your new venture should have gone through more alpha and beta level testing before being launched? …and then you risk losing some of the brand loyalty you worked so hard to build up?
Eh… Different strokes for different folks, and I guess it’s hard to argue with success. A lot more people show up and pay more to hear GV’s public speaking engagements than is the case for mine. Maybe he’s crazy like a fox. Or he’s just got a much bigger ADHD-driven ego. Or both…

  • Thanks Colonel. It is unfortunate that it has taken that sort of turn. Oh well. I will let it roll.

  • Anonymous

Maybe GV should just wear a hat that says “I’m sorry” πŸ˜‰ then he would no longer need to say it.

    TTF – Show #21 Rating…. 87 pts,

Just like GV said about the last wine, he “kinda just mailed it in” All the components were there but rather one dimensional. Quick little quip about bi-daily grape was ???? I guess it was funny. My prediction is that there will be a lot of GV disciple’s commenting and promoting there brand on DG. I’m seeing many comments where the reply is more about self brand promotion with .com’s attached.

Pride Mountain Cab 2003 …. 92-93 points. Silky sweet tannins. Has rounded out to the point that it is seamless πŸ˜‰ Drink now as the wine has hit it’s peak drinking window.

we want mott ….. we want mott ….. we want mott

  • Pride Mtn huh? I’ll go check it out tomorrow before my Caps play at 3pm.

  • John__J

    Wow apparently I missed something

  • πŸ˜€ or even that a brand maybe can be to big to fail? πŸ˜€ . Me being much more cautios maybe never turn a corner and begin a new venture, because I need a belt, suspenders and a lifejacket to even try.

Or the fact is that it is a new audience, just look at the comments ( despiote a lot od doubles). They are many more a day now, but actually more like tweets instead of interaction. This may be the new world and I’m to old to really grasp the speed in wich it moves and not articualte. Shoter is better? No almost never. We are pressed for time? Time is the only thing we have. I’ll think I sit down and sniff a wine for an hour now. Cheers

  • GO CAPS!

On a wine note, at yesterday’s cooking demo at L’Auberge here in VA http://chefjacques.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=CJ&Category_Code=CD2 I had three awfully good wines. Not expensive but as expected, paired beautifully with the meal.

First off we had a Hillinger Secco http://www.leo-hillinger.com/english/sortiment_dtl.php?katid=5&id=17&PHPSESSID=631d4364b5b3db4de60af8f30066588c that was refreshing and a nice way to begin a Saturday morning.

After the demo was completed, we are led into the dining room where we begin with a Parmesan Cheese SoufflΓ© that is to die for. They paired the 2009 Girard SB http://www.girardwinery.com/index/page/product/product_id/1319/category_id/16/product_name/2009+Girard+Sauvignon+Blanc%2C+Napa+Valley%2C+750ml which complemented the cheese to perfection. I was taken aback to tell you the truth when I saw they paired the SB with the soufflΓ© but must admit, it worked our quite well. On a side note, I have a fondness for Girard winery. Years ago I visited Napa and wanted Girard to be one of my stops since I always liked their wines. Well, they were closed due to some construction though the owner came out and realized I really wanted to taste their wines etc so he said, “Follow me in my car and I’ll take you over to town to the local Dean & Deluca and we’ll taste some wines there. Of course, we did. So I can say I tasted wines with the owner of Girard winery. I later find out that the owner was Pat Roney who was the president of Dean & Deluca, http://www.girardwinery.com/index/page/static/subpage/about_vintner (Back to wines from demo)

For the main course, we had Veal Scallopini with Gruyere Cheese and it was paired with the ’09 Henry Fessy Morgon which everyone enjoyed at the table. It’s one of the cru Beaujolais from Brouilly that again, is inexpensive (can be found for 15 bones or less, the restaurant was selling some for 22) and again a killer wine for the price. Here’s the notes from their wesbite:

The bouquet of the Morgon 2009 is a veritable basket of fruits with delicious aromas of cassis and mostly currant. Nice balance; the tannins are round, supple and mellow. On tasting, the aromas revealed in the bouquet reappear with intensity. Lovely length. (I can concur these notes, smooth as silk and the bouquet was amazing.)

That’s my long-winded wine experience/cooking demo from yesterday. Today, I need to jog (alot), do some yard work and then head down to the man cave to watch my Caps on the big screen. Dinner should be something on the grille, pork loin chops perhaps with a nice Oregon pinot. May pull out an older Ken Wright or Sineann?

Take care everyone. Any wine experiences/suggestions? Keep ’em coming.

    Cheers!

    P.S. Where’s Mott?

  • Thx for sharing, Dominus.. What a great evening!

I just bought my first Morgon a few days ago: 2009 Morgon Jean Descombes, recommended by wine shop owner.. Hope it is as good as the one you had (and as good as WS score of 93 pts) I think it was $17. Anxious to try it now..

Re the Girard, I just recently tried their 08 Artistry (bordeaux type blend) at a Meritage tasting of 9 wines and it rated in the top 2 by most people at the tasting ($26-30 around here).

Just attended a German riesling and pinot noir tasting.. Wow, what a learning experience! Loved the rieslings! Pinot noirs -not so much. Yikes. Very different than California and even Burgundy.

Have not yet had Ken Wright or Sineann. Love Oregon pinot.

    Cheers and thx for sharing.

  • Oops- this was supposed to be a reply to Dominus.. I wish I could blame it on Disqus. πŸ™‚

  • I take it back. It’s Disqus. Sigh.

  • Very nice and informative report/review Lisa. Keep it up!

Love the Girard. Good wine and good folks.

When you visit the world of German Rieslings and pinots, in my book, that’s what it’s all about with the aromatics and complexities of the wine. A very “moody” wine, much like myself. I loved the scene in “Sideways” where Niles answers the question as to why he likes pinot so much. It was a classic scene and response.

Keep attending the tastings, they are so much fun and you learn sooooo much.

    Cheers!
    Dom

P.S. My Caps lost today but that’s ok. We win Wed and bring it back to DC to clinch. Kudos to the Rangers.

  • Sounds like a really good Saturday for Dominus. I’ll keep an eye out for the 2009 Henry Fessy Morgon.
In contrast, I went to Atlantic City and saw Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet band do that ol’ time rock and roll thing (probably the last time I’ll see them in concert). Very much a beer drinking crowd – not wine. Time to Turn the Page…

  • I’m sorry about the Caps.. at least you’re a good sport!

Great description of the German wines! The pinots I tasted were very moody! Ha!
Yeah, that scene in Sideways was indeed classic. We need another good wine movie.

I had my first Sancerre today.. Not sure why it took so long.
    Good wine: Hippolyte Reverdy 2009.
    http://winelibrary.com/wines/54276-2009+Hippolyte+Reverdy+Sancerre+750ML

    Cheers! L

Sooooo nice to see the old avatar Lisa, even though your new picture is very beautiful. πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

Sounded like a great event. Some very nice pairings. I will have to try and look the Morgon up. Right in my wheelhouse. Thanks for sharing Dominus. πŸ™‚

P.S. Sorry about the Caps also. I am languishing over my Blackhawks right now.

  • Thx NWIndianaDan! Yeah, I miss WLTV, too. Glad to see that you guys pop in here now and then. πŸ™‚

  • Yeah, we’re like homing pigeons. Even if you take away our loft, we still come back to roost since this is the only “home” we know. Kinda sad but nevertheless, knowledgeable good people who share good stories with a common interest: wine.

That was your first Sancerre and it was good? That’s a great start, batting 1.000! I will need to try and find it so I can check it out. I, myself, have not had too many but generally are quite good. Thanks for sharing.

Maybe we can start a trend by recommending a somewhat readily available wine and each give our two cents? You, NWID and I can have our Trio Tasting and any of the former clan can join in too. A nice love winefest.

    Cheers!

Go Caps! (though Dom speaks softly up 2-1)

  • Great idea, Dominus.. I’m in! Trio (quattro, etc) tasting, winefest. I like it!

Here is some more info on Sancerre.. DId I mention it’s a Kermit Lynch wine? It does very well around the Palo Alto, CA area from what I’m told: http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1059701&cid=TPV-Googlebase

Again it’s my first Sancerre so I have nothing to compare it to, except CA and NZ sauv blancs. I think you like Cloudy Bay NZ SB, yes? I’ve not yet tried it but it’s in the fridge. Anxious to try it since it gets good press and scores.

  • I just ordered the Descombes Morgon and Hippolyte Sancerre from WL. Plus, I needed some more of the Girard SB that I had on Saturday for quaffing out on the deck. I should have it in a couple days and will review.

    Cheers!

P.S. The review of the Sancerre said it was a little “hot.” Hope not. That turns me off more than anything. Hot women, yes, wines, a big NO! Also having a “hot goalie” during the playoffs helps alot. πŸ˜‰

  • πŸ˜‰ You remember from one of many inane comments I like da Cloudy Bay? I’m genuinely impressed and overwhelmed. Yes, yes and more yes. I love that stuff. The press and wine critics can poo-poo it all they want but there’s a reason CB put NZ SB on the map. It’s just freakingly good nectar to me. Another “Bay” Oyster Bay is another of my favs.

I will check out this link and I did not know it was Kermit Lynch. With his stamp of approval then it must be good.

    Cheers!

P.S. If you can hold off a couple days on the Sancerre, then we could do our own “Cross Country Secret Pak/Brown Bag” tasting . . . though we already know what’s behind Bag #1! Zoom in on that bag Mott! πŸ™‚

  • Ha ha!!! No, I didn’t detect any heat on the sancerre.. I was surprised by the comment in the review. BTW: This is the Morgon that I bought.. I don’t see it on WL site?
http://www.grapetray.com/items/detail?itemid=408672 If this is what you ordered, then I’ll hold off trying it until you do. Oh my.. the pressure is on. πŸ™‚

I like the idea of picking a wine and then everyone who is still on this site can try and compare notes. Everyone who participates can rotate selecting the next wine. TTF – Go ahead and refine the idea ????? Thoughts?

BV Tapestry 2007. Seriously good juice 92 pts.

  • Good to hear there was no heat. I’m just a tad sensitive to it.

I got the right name but a different bottle of “Descombes.” Darn. Oh well. Here’s what I bought. http://winelibrary.com/wines/58088-2008+Georges+Descombes+Morgon+Vieilles+Vignes+750ML

No pressure, please. πŸ˜‰ I’m the one under pressure. Just in good fun.

I will let you know when my stash arrives.

    Buh bye til later.

    I like it, great Idea.

Good to see and old Fashion WLTV exchange on here, TTF keep it up!

We will, as long the lights are kept on. TTF! πŸ˜‰

  • Don’t care about NBA. Actually, I despise it.

    They should lock it out.

  • Good idea..Tennispro! Thx for BV Tapestry rec. 2007 a great year for Cali cabernets/blends.

  • Excuse me, but what is TTF? I’m almost afraid to ask! πŸ˜‰

Lisa, TTF (To The Faithful)! πŸ˜‰

You’re just upset about the Caps poor showing. πŸ˜›

  • Nice. Thx Dan.

  • No, not at all. No one here expects a sweep. Wednesday is a big game though.

And who pray tell are you rotting I mean rooting for? Da ‘Hawks? You better get out that broom! πŸ™‚

    Go Caps!

  • So I open up a Guigal Cote du Rhone 2007. One have always to check out the new kid on the block. Just released in Sweden. Guigal seem to hold of on every vintage, much longer then most other producers. Well it is that herby, grapefruity, charcutery and dark red fruit smell. Nice streaks of lavender anddark chocolate and that sage/basill strange thingy that sometimes come with CdR. Wow is this coarse on the tounge, sandpaper, wood, almost like there is grains of grape skin left in the liquid. Taste is nice smokey sausage, herbs (bayleaf), plum, blackberries and a hint og craneberry. First sip , meh, second, hmm, third oh, fourt, aaaahh. I guess It had do air a bit :). Cheers, now to find the Guigal Crozes-Hermitage 2007 somewhere in the country.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, Yeah! We will see. The B-Hawks totally forgot how to pass the puck. Too, Too many turnovers! πŸ˜›

  • Nice and informative review AndersN! That’s what I’m talking about! It’s amazing what happens after the first few sips and letting it air a bit. I have always had pretty good luck with Guigal though they are a huge conglomerate in France and one would not expect as much. I guess the secret to becoming huge is you also need to be good.

” . . . now to find the Guigal Crozes . . . somewhere in the country.” That’s a bummer, well, at least in trying to find a particular wine though you do live in one lovely country that I have to try one day. I always enjoy the “hunt” for a wine I “must have.”

Go Bjorn Borg! I remember when he dominated the sport like no other.

    Cheers!

  • Well, hopefully they learn to pass and make the Canucks work for it. I’m rooting for your boys. I love their jerseys!

  • No vino delivery today Lisa S. πŸ™

Hopefully by Friday evening they should arrive. An email from WL said they have been shipped. When they arrive, I will celebrate by lighting a candle and pretending we’re enjoying a nice glass of the Hippolyte Sancerre with some cruditΓ© or oysters on the half shell with a dab of hot sauce to kick them up a notch. If not oysters, then maybe a leek tart. Yum

Then I would complete the culinary coup d’etat with the Jean Descombes Morgon paired with a roasted chicken (one of my specialties) with tarragon, garlic and slathered with melted butter. Of course, while it’s roasting on the big ass gas grille, I (“we” in my mind) will be sitting on the deck quaffing a glass of Gosset champagne. Gotta keep it French right! And what better way.

    Bon appetit!

Dominus, as always, is right. NBA is not sport.

Found a Gigondas at Total Wine for $24.99, rated 93 pts by Intl. Wine Cellar. Will be back with the details later. Decant for 2 hours, or lay down. Super value play. Stay tuned.

(Getting much closer to 1K for 1K!!! Keep the momentum.

  • VanF, Keep us posted on this Gigondas.. Is it an ’08?

  • Oui, oui! Keep it French! Oh my goodness Very, very impressive menu, Dom. Excellent food/wine pairings! I am speechless right now. I’ll be back when I can “talk”. πŸ™‚

  • Anonymous

Turnbull Cabernet 2007 …. Got it at 90 point. Nice solid bottle of Cab, but a bit of heat in the back end keeps the score down for me. Plenty of fruit across the board but not over done. I’m going to seek out a Dominus 2007 in honor of Dominus, and see how their wines are tasting. I have not had a Dominus since 2002 so this should be a treat.

    TTF ……. T minus 106 …. the count down continues πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

Borg (a la the original ice man) was the KING of tennis in his prime. Cool, Calm, Collected, Ruthless and Cold Blooded with each and every passing shot & under rated Serve.

Think about it, 6 French Open titles to go along with 5 Wimbledon (how many of those were in a row? πŸ™‚ ) ….. Going from a best of 5 sets SLOW red clay courts to another best of 5 sets FAST grass courts and still dominating. No one else has done this!!! No One.

    Yes Dominus – GO BORG!!!

I’ve had the fun of going out with Borg well past his hey day, and in the most out of the way places he is still recognized by all.

BTW Dominus, is Lisa S the former Melba ??? I’m sure I misspelled her handle. So I’m sorry in advance. My prediction is that you two shall indeed meet and experience some food and wine together πŸ™‚

  • I’ll be here waiting with baited breath. TTF Forever! πŸ™‚
