EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

  • You went out with Borg? I’m truly impressed. He seems like such the gentleman and I wish he had not retired so soon. Many have speculated the reason for retiring was that he abhorred losing and he got to the point he felt he couldn’t beat McEnroe so he walked away. I, on the other hand, have a different opinion. After he took the sabbatical away from the game and decided to come back and play in a tournament (forgot which tournament) the buttheads at the USTA said he had to qualify? It may have been the French or Wimbledon but don’t quote me. Nevertheless, THE Bjorn Borg should qualify!!!!! Are you nuts! That would have forced me to retire and walk away.

So Lisa S is Melba? I thought I had read one of the comments to that regard. Either way, I’m smitten to say the least. πŸ˜‰

    Cheers!

Go Caps! We need to win tonight.

  • I am truly humbled, thank you, but you MUST give us your unadulterated opinion of the wine. I have yet to “experience” the ’07. I shall seek it out and compare notes.

    Cheers!

  • Tennispro, I have the Turnbull 2007 Napa Cab. I’m tempted to try it and compare notes. I wonder if heat will dissipate with decant, or just leaving bottle open for several hours? Will definitely look forward to review of Dominus (from both of you). Never had one.

  • Ha! Guys: Just for the record, I’m Lisa S (however, you may call me, Lisa). Melba LI lives in Long Island and I’m in Menlo Park, CA. It’s OK.. I consider it a compliment as she is extremely witty. πŸ™‚

  • Dom, I suspect that you may have a lot of women (and even a few men) lining up at your door on Friday evening after posting such a fabulous menu.
    I’ll be there in spirit!!!

  • Well, thank you , you americans fans of Borg. Yes, he was way to young to quit and too good to not remember. Sweden stopped in it’s track when finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon were played. Me and my friends always started playing tennis when the WTC got to the French open. Clay courts all over the country filled up with kids, me being teenager then. Actually Borg born in 1956 as other supreme athletes in sweden. Ingemar stenmark, the best apline skier ever, same year. Frank Andersson, world best greek-roman wretsler for a decade, same year. Thomas Wassberg, world and olympic champion several times (cross country ski). Kent Nilsson, Mr Magic (Calgary and Edmonton NHL), Pekka Lindmark, worlds best goaly 87-91
For sports 1956 was a good vintage in Sweden.

gary…..a “petite vin” you’re doubtless famliar with……montelcour 2008 (cote du rhone) is something i can personally recommend to your viewers. I get it here in france for about 2.50 – 3.50euro.

you would be the one to known if it’s available in the excited states.

    cheers!

  • The Eagle Has Landed! I have a bottle of the Hippolyte Sancerre that is whispering in my ear “Open me and taste the fine nectar, you won’t be disappointed.” Now I need to find a partner in crime to taste, give some notes and enjoy.

Any takers or again, do I need to drink alone?

    Go Caps!

    P.S. I could also open WL’s #1 red http://winelibrary.com/wines/58172-2006+Livernano+Chianti+Classico+750ML or the Morgon http://winelibrary.com/wines/58088-2008+Georges+Descombes+Morgon+Vieilles+Vignes+750ML

  • tennispro: Give me a couple days to procur the ’07 and if we can get Lisa S to join us we’ll have a wine tasting mΓ©nage Γ  trois. It can’t get any better than that! Or I can get the ’07 Turnbull? Thoughts?

    Cheers!

Though the Sancerre sounds delightful, I myself would go with the Morgon. I am always up for some fine wine and good conversation. {:)

My Blackhawks sure did it up right last night. Let’s see if they can keep it going. πŸ˜‰

You know when Gary has his first guest appearance back here at the old homestead (whenever that may be), this place is going to blow-up like the 4th of July! πŸ™‚

  • Anonymous

    I vote for the adult-rated version! πŸ˜›

  • Anonymous

Can I run out and get a Turnbull so we can all try it together?

  • Yes! I just had the last bit of Sancerre yesterday (opened on Sunday).. I still have my notes and will post whenever you are ready to drink and comment. (just don’t drink and dial) Remember that line from Sideways? Loved it!

My Morgon is from a different producer than yours, but I’m happy to taste along and compare notes.

Turnbull or Dominus? I’ll let you, TP and Dan decide. In the meantime, check out the review and great scores: http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1057382
So why is the 07 so much more expensive than the 06? Is this another epic wine?

    -Lisa (not Melba). πŸ˜‰

  • John__J

Yeah the 1st one he does back here should be interesting

  • Anonymous

Dominus & Lisa S ( not Melba πŸ˜‰ ) you both should check out dinner being sponsored by K&L wines featuring Dominus wines and more. Yes Lisa it is a bit pricey, but I’m sure Dominus will cover you. I’ll even bring the Spottswoode 2002 to compare. TTF – Go online and check it out. What say you ??? ….. June 8th, 2011… Time to play with your wine friends. πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

Check out my last post. This might be a better way to taste some Dominus wine. This wine is the real deal, and yes vintages to matter πŸ˜‰ the 07’s are a step up from the 06’s across the board, in Napa wines.

  • Oooooh nice! What could be better than that?

    I will check it out.

  • Ummmmm, unfortunately not though I can sometimes count on one guy to come over in a pinch to hit a few tennis balls and then we sit out on the deck quaffing some nice wine and chowing down on some grilled delicacies.

Right now, I’m enjoying these fine wines solo. He’s in Israel celebrating Passover.

“In spirit” works for me! πŸ˜‰

  • We will have to cut tennispro off from the Turnbull! πŸ˜‰

    Menlo Park? Very nice.

  • Lisa S: I read you like Zins? Try to find a Haywood Los Chamizal if you can.

    http://www.winemasters.com/proddetail.php?prod=HayLCV&cat=2653

  • Thanks for this, Dom. I do like Zin. I’ve not heard of Haywood..The descript on website sounds wonderful..I will definitely order it if I can’t find it locally. Merci beaucoup.

  • Well, Tennispro…… if you put it that way, how could I say no? Great idea. I’ve attended many K&L tastings but not a winemaker dinner. The price is well worth it considering the wine and the venue. The restaurant alone is amazing from what I’ve been told. I can cover this -Thanks.. Easier for me to say yes, as this is in my backyard. Dominus, on the other hand, would have to get on a plane. I assume you, TP are in driving distance to SF?

About your awesome bottle of Spottswood -Umm..you may have to send it to Dominus after putting him on the spot! πŸ™‚

  • Oui. 20O7 was a great year across the board in Sonoma/Napa.. I noticed it less with the 07 pinot noirs, however.

  • Good idea! Too funny
    .
Yes, MP is a nice place to live. I work in Palo Alto (a 7-minute commute).
Gary was here in MP on Apr 5 for book signing. Great to meet him and hear him speak live.

Hey Dominus, what’s up? No appearance over at DG. Getting to be too much over there? Ray has been asking and I told him you are hanging over here. πŸ˜‰ TTF!

Did you see my Blackhawks tonight? They are clawing their way back into this thing. πŸ™‚

You guys are making me jealous with this Dominus event. Sounds wonderful. Have a great time. You will have to share all the details after. πŸ˜‰ TTF!

  • say what? Spammer!

  • Let’s hope so. May the force be with us!

  • Hmmmm sorry to hear your Morgon did not live up to WS. Each palate is different and what they think is a “good” wine may not be to you or me. I have found that their 88 pt wines suit me well. When they get into the 90s, all bets are off.

With the G-Man, my palate is awfully darn close so one of the many reasons I watch him and take his reviews of wines to heart. Not 100% of the wines I’ve tried that he thought were stellar but awfully close.

I went to watch some college tennis yesterday (the reason I did not comment yesterday) in a town called Fredericksburg, VA and stopped at a small, boutique wine shop that I frequent each year and picked up some possible beauties. One of the “consultants” just started a new job as a distributor and we got to talking about wines etc. I told him about French whites and my love for Sancerre and Viognier so he went to the back and said if you stay a few mins I’ll open up a nice one for you. πŸ™‚ It was an amazing French Viognier that can be had for approx 10 bones! If I remember it was called Les Jamilles? http://www.les-jamelles.com/us/ If you can find this Viognier, buy it and sit back and sniffy sniff. You may not drink it since the floral aromas are that good.

One of the wines I picked up is the last vintage of a chateau that Donald Trump just purchased a week or so ago called Kluge Winery. http://www.klugeestate.com/ The purple label wine at the top will be opened either tonight or tomorrow.

I will give my review of The Lib’s Morgon sometime this weekend. I hope to open it during the Caps clinching victory Saturday night! πŸ˜‰

GO CAPS!!!!! What an amazing come-from-behind victory.

    Cheers

P.S. Boy is it nice to edit and reply comments over here. Hear that NWID!!! πŸ™‚

  • Hey NWID:

I watch but won’t comment over there until I smooth out my ruffled feathers over a particular “verbal intercourse” I had a week or so ago. I love my homies over here and am more comfortable in “our house.” πŸ™‚

I saw your Blackhawks! Keep it up my man! I’m rooting for you.

    Cheers!

P.S. I guess I should do some work now. I’ll be back on later with a glass in hand. Give Ray my best. I need to hook up with him in VA Beach.

  • Yikes! All the way across this great land of ours.

I went to their website yet could not find their featured event. I will check again.

I can’t imagine better reasons to visit your lovely state. πŸ˜‰

P.S. Curious, does everyone here have a twitter account? Could we create a TTF group?

  • Nice reply, Dominus.

No, I don’t tweet (well, at least not yet) πŸ™‚

    Here you go: http://www.klwines.com/local_events.asp
K&L has three stores: San Francisco, Redwood City and Hollywood. You can access this Under “local events” at top of home page, but it also comes up if you search Dominus wine on the K&L website. If you and tennispro would like to discuss this further, you can email me at [email protected].

  • Sounds like it was a nice day! I will check out the Viognier and the Klug – thx for this. I’ll be back later (with a glass of something). Ciao for now!

Wine tasting/ dinner event are always great. The K & L event featuring Dominus wines no doubt will be outstanding. I will be going. Sounds to fun to pass up. Will let u all know when my ticket is purchased πŸ˜‰

What do you think of the new DG music??? Not sure how the music intro sets the stage to taste some wine ? … It’s meh for me.

DG episode #24 rating 89 …. Good energy by GV, some fun facts, a QOTD that was not too generic as in the past few episodes. Yea, 89 it is. Good work GV I liked the last two episodes.

TTF … What Is part of Jon Toutman (sp) job to keep the conversation going at DG. He seems to be taking over GV presence/role.

PPP police. Really??? How many comments did those folks leave?

I’ll probably be going to watch the NCAA finals at Stanford in a couple of weeks. Spent 4 years there, teaching summer tennis camps with Dick Gould. 1984-88 was a great time to be at the Farm. πŸ˜‰ Did you watch a dual match or a tournament?

  • I work at Stanford (in the hospital on campus). Small world. πŸ™‚

  • No comments from me with regards to Mr. Troutman or anyone else. He’s trying for sure and I don’t know the job responsibilities so I will leave it at that. All I know is I miss Mott, plain and simple.

As for the music, again, doesn’t matter one way or the other. Anything can be playing (well, except rap) and I would pay it no mind. I prefer Mozart or a jazz tune but that’s usually playing on my stereo system in the background so the short intro is what it is, an intro.

My main reason for watching, it’s all about the content, i.e. “thunder” and of course, the interaction here.

    Cheers

P.S. I’ve finished work for the day. Time to open up a bottle. Which shall it be?

  • It was nice. Mid 60s so a little chilly but not bad for this time of year.

    I’ll be waiting. πŸ˜‰

    Hey Dominus,

I think I know the altercation of which you speak and that is all good and I understand. πŸ˜‰

I will definitely let Ray know. I did tell him that you were hanging over here though, so maybe he will poke his head in here sometime. As far as VaBeach is concerned, I too would like to make the trip back to VaBeach and hook up with you and Ray. Lets try and swing something. πŸ˜‰

My Blackhawks are definitely En Fuego, I hope I spelled that right. πŸ˜›

For Lisa S – I’m back with the Gigondas information. Thanks for your interest! Bought another bottle today and am enjoying it now. Yup, 2008. Pierre Amadieu Domaine Grand Romaine Gigondas. Imported by Saranty Imports, Harrison, NY. Rated 93 points by Intl. Wine Cellar and found at Total Wine for $24.99. Still young and the tannins overpower the fruit without decanting. Hightly recommended!

I miss Mott too! Seriously high production values!!!

  • Here is the card for Friday Night’s Expand Your Palate at Chateau Dom before the Main Event on this rainy, damp, cold night (Roasted Chicken with a rub concoction) with vegetables on one of those tangine rigs from NapaStyle.com.

    Round One
NV Lost Vineyards “Treehugger” Vino di Tavolo Rosso
    http://treehuggerorganicwines.com/
First Glance: Nice label, screwtop, “organic,” Italian red, so far, so good. Light color, almost Oregon pinot-like, 10 bones
Sniffy-Sniff: Light on the aromatics, not much going on.
Whirl: Ouch, disjointed, what is this? It says “Rosso” on the label though reflects “grosso.”
Rating: Major pazzzz. I can’t believe I listened to the lady at the wine shop in F’burg on this one.
69 pts (Not a good score though I do like that number. It has symmetry.)

    Round Two
    2009 OSEL Ruche
    http://www.siemawines.com/product-portfolio/italy/piedmont/osel/
Ruche is the varietal of this wine which I’ve never tasted so I can add this to my Centennial list.
First Glance: Nice label, natural cork, Italian, again, light color, resembles most Merlots in the glass
Sniffy-Sniff: Ahhh, better, this is unique, not bad, notes of sun-dried tomato, a little kirsch action mixed with a little dried cherry. Nice, not bad.
Whirl: This is nice and smooth, no oak or tannins though some nice oregano spicy finish, quite good actually that should go very well with the roasted chicken. 13 bones

This would be the perfect for GV’s “expand your palate” and a recommendation for the CKCs πŸ™‚
Highly Recommended (The lady redeemed herself somewhat)
    Rating: 88 pts (John Mackey)

Round Three (drinking as I compose this little synopsis)
    2009 Annefield Viognier (US: Virginia)
    http://www.annefieldplantation.com/wines_white.php
First Glance: Lovely shape to her, gorgeous eyes, wait, wait, gorgeous and elegant “label”
Sniffy-Sniff: Ohhhhmiiiiigosh, this is major floral aromatics. Did anyone see Pucino in “The Scent of a Woman”? Well, this is what I feel like right now with this wine. This is gorgeous stuff. Now for . . .
Whirl: First thought, very nice, it’s as though I was jogging along a path and grabbed a bunch of honeysuckles and stuffed them in my mouth. Smooth with a touch of acidity which I like, melon, citrus, the gammut of the typical Viogniers but this one is quite special, now let’s be clear. This is Virginia, not Spain or France who produce the best Viogniers in my black book but let me tell you, this is a very good wine. Virginia has come a long way in the past 5-10 years. Thos Jefferson would be proud and the vineyard is located in Saxe, Virginia, hey, it’s close so it must be good.
Rating: 89 pts Verrry nice recommendation

    Tomorrow Night:
    Saturday Night Caps Game Swirl
    http://winelibrary.com/wines/58088-2008+Georges+Descombes+Morgon+Vieilles+Vignes+750ML

This should be a good one.

TGIF! Though sorry for the long rant.

    Cheers!
