EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

  • We could do that; however, as NWID says, it could be a long time before ep 1001.

How about we toast the occasion with a nice bottle of champagne and… keep going? πŸ™‚

  • or even try to get to 2000 before DG get 100 πŸ™‚

  • I saw it! And yes, happy for you and the Hawk fans. Great comeback. Now to beat them in their own house!

    Go ‘Hawks and Caps!

P.S. Too bad Flyers won to go to Game 7. πŸ™

  • Let’s keep the ball rolling over here. I couldn’t be away from you guys and gal too long. πŸ˜‰

Tonight it will be Trousseau Gris hailing from Russian River Valley, USA vs. Chasselas hailing from Valais, Switzerland in a pairing showdown with (what my friend promises to be an awesome family recipe of his wife’s) clam pasta.

I’m going to have to give a shout out to Randall from this same comment section for securing the rare trousseau gris for me.
From what I can gather there’s only 10 acres in the Russian River Valley of it made by one winery who owns all of it (although there are 2 other wineries which buy grapes from them which also put out a trousseau gris, one being a sweet/dessert version so technically there’s 3 I guess.) There’s also a few vines mixed in around with other varietals in California, Alsace and Jura which end up in some wines as minor blender’s.

And then Swiss wine, which I’ve only had a few times since the Swiss love drinking all their own wine and barely exporting any to share with the rest of us.

  • John__J

I’m guessing the Chasselas will at least be better with the food, yet I’m more excited to try the Trousseau Gris.

No more fun over here, that would be sad. Let’s shoot for 1500 before the next WLTV is posted.

Love anything Russian River, can’t wait for the review.

  • Anonymous

On on board with both suggestions πŸ˜‰

  • Me too tennispro. There’s a RR Chardonnay that escapes me right now with a blue shiny label that kicks major butt. I’ll track it down.

Looking forward to hearing about these wines and especially the food.

You know what they say about clams? πŸ˜‰

    Cheers!

P.S. My son’s team lost in the conference finals to their archrival 5-4 though I had a great visit to my quaint wine shop. πŸ˜‰

  • Me too, let’s kick some major arse.

I’m grilling pork loin chops on the grille and quaffing Lisa’s Sancerre and watching DG while the corn on the cob is grilling.

  • Tell all about this event, please.

  • QOTD: 1) Frasier 2) M*A*S*H (dating myself) 3) Seinfeld

  • where is Randall btw?

  • Me three! Love Russian River. Last year my fav wine was the 2008 Paul Hobbs Russian River Pinot Noir.

So what do they say about clams? How do I not know this? πŸ™‚

  • Dunno and where’s Kahuna? Are the forums still going strong? I guess I should peek in to see if anything is happening.

I just finished up a nice marinated grilled pork loin and pair it with this sitting out on the deck under a gorgeous sky listening to Sting “Fields of Gold.”

SOTER NORTH VALLEY PINOT NOIR 2008, OREGON
Full red. Pungent aromas of black raspberry and cherry complicated by wilted rose, violet and black pepper. Pliant, palate-staining red and dark berry flavors are enlivened by peppery spice and mineral notes, with silky tannins adding shape. Becomes chewier with air and finishes with solid, sweet punch and very good clarity.
Wine Spectator 90 Pts – Wine Advocate 90 Pts – IWC 91 Pts 24 bones

    A really nice Oreegun Peenoe

    Cheers!

  • You are kidding I’m sure about the clams. πŸ˜‰

Sapphire Hill is the Chard I was referring to in a previous post. Really nice chard a few years ago. I haven’t had any of their recent releases.

  • And you must try the Merry Edwards Pinot. Truly amazing.

  • Ahhh Champagne, the nectar of the Gods. I remember the time I drank nothing but Champagne until the time I traveled to Venice and stopped at a fine trattoria and had the pasta special with an Italian merlot. It was their house blend and I had a life-changing moment. Obviously, I haven’t looked back.

To REALLY appreciate Champagne, one must read this book.
    http://www.amazon.com/Wine-War-Frances-Greatest-Treasure/dp/0767904486

After reading this book, every time you take a sip of Champagne I promise you will stop and reminisce about the sacrifice and history of this region.

    Cheers!

  • Lisa:

Great idea. Should we all choose the same bottle and give our notes or pick one that we like? I pretty much love them all so I’m easy. Gosset, Bollinger, DP, Veuve Cliquot and Pommery are my “go-to” Champagnes.

I remember staying at this little shack a few moons ago and took a liking to Pommery Apenage champagne. Beneath this chateau (Pommery) there are miles and miles of caves and each “street” with it’s own name, i.e. Champs Elysses, etc. I also remember the tour guide being this young, gorgeous blonde from Arkansas. Dom was in heaven.

    Cheers!

  • Off to watch HOUSE. That show invigorates my mind.

  • I wish I was kidding!! Is it similar to what they say about oysters? πŸ˜‰

I have had the Merry Edwards Pinot and it is very good., as well as her SB.
Just bought a few bottles of Kosta Browne and futures of Sea Smoke. I see a wine moratorium in my future.

Sapphire Hill? Will make a note of it. My favorite Russian River Chards in the $27-38 price range: 1. Failla 2. Ramey. 3. Gary Farrell.

Love Kistler and Peter Michael, too.. (for special occasion – $$$$)

Sounds like you had a tough day. I am so sorry. Suicide is very difficult. I had similar situation here at work last fall and we still haven’t recovered from it…. Extremely difficult for family and friends left behind. I’m sure your friend appreciates your support!

  • My favorite show. I’m three hours behind so I’ll watch later.

  • Is it just me, or do you folks notice more than the usual amount of year-to-year variations in wines from Russian River vineyards? The soil doesn’t change, so it’s either the weather or the winemakers experiment more … or maybe It’s just the RR wines I’ve had.

  • Yes, you’re right! I’ve noticed it with chardonnays in recent years. Interesting.. Not sure why this is..

That Pinot sounds delish! I may have to try and find that one, Oregon makes some mighty fine Pinot Noir! πŸ™‚

That is so sad about friends brother. I too had a sad note last week. A friend of mine who graduated a year behind me also committed suicide. Last Tuesday he shot himself and he too had children that has to deal with this. You know, what brings one to do such a thing? You have to really be in a state of depression to do that to yourself. I am so sorry for your friend Dominus! These people have know idea what that does to the loved ones left behind. πŸ™

I also love the RRV. They make some great Pinot Noirs and Chards there, do they not? When ever I am in the store that is all my eyes look at are the RRV’s! πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

WOW kindred spirits we all are! πŸ˜‰

I have got to say that I really like the Kosta Browne also and I must admit. I have 3-4 bottles of Castle Rock Pinot Noir from the RRV laying down and they were only 16-17 bones. Mighty tasty!

  • What a lovely chateau!!! I have no doubt you were in heaven. Haha!

Oui!! Champagne! What shall we drink, Dom and TP (anyone else) ????

I’ve not had the ones you mentioned, except Veuve Cliquot.. I used to love Taittinger but have not had it in several years. However, I do have this at home:

http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=208474 I tried it at champagne tasting event last fall and had to buy it. Otherwise, I could get a bottle of Bollinger or Pommery.

Isn’t DP overrated just a tad?

Thx for book recommendation. Will order it.

  • Kosta Browne is not an everyday wine… and I’m always in search of PN under $20 but so far the only one I like is Belle Glos Meiomi. I didn’t know that Castle Rock had a RRV PN! I’ve tried their central coast PN and didn’t like it at all. (Sorry, John Farrin).
Thx. I’ll see if I can find it!

My folks live right next door (3 miles) to Merry Edwards. I Will do a pinot tasting next time I’m there (two weeks). πŸ™‚ will report back on my tasting.

  • Anonymous

Belle Glos rocks …. Have you tried Stemmler (sp) Russian River Pinot? Yummy….

  • Anonymous

I’m open for Champagne choice you two pick πŸ˜‰

My vote is the weather. I grew there and boy does it ever change. Talk about fog πŸ˜‰

Paul Hobbs anything and I’m in. Better than Dominus ???? Just kidding Dominus …….

It’s close for me with PH top end offerings. Especially the To Kalon offerings πŸ˜‰ Lisa, Have you tried Realm, Pride Mountian, or Favia ???

  • Anonymous

Love my wine shop visits too …. I think I’m over due πŸ™‚

  • Anonymous

You must have been great player to get drafted. Cheers to all the hard work you put in to get to that point. Nice work Dominus !!!!

“Damages” is my new show. Yes I know it’s not new but I’m just catching on to season 1 and 2. Love it.

  • Anonymous

I’m more simple ….. I dream of Jeannie, Wonder Women, and Baywatch …. Just kidding but they were fun shows πŸ˜‰ Never heard of Coupling but I will look it up.

  • TP: I have heard of them but have not tried them… I assume they’re hard-to-get, small production wines?? Yeah, Paul Hobbs.. Have not had any of his wines from To Kalon vineyard (yet).. I’m jealous. I’ve been fascinated by the Beckstoffer To Kalon vineyard… after reading WS article last fall (Nov?) about Schrader wines offerings from To Kalon, 97-100 pts for 2007. Great story.

  • I’ve heard of Stemmler.. Do I need to add this to my wish list, too?

  • oh wait..sorry. I have had Bollinger (at same event mentioned above). Hmmm… What shall it be???

  • Yes, that is a good brainshow and I like it when people can be mean in an intellectual sarcastic way.
But I’ve started to watch Game of Thrones, it can be something ( I’m a sucker fΓΆr fantasy of all kinds)

  • John__J

I haven’t heard from him in a couple weeks. Last time we spoke he said he had been having a bit of computer trouble and didn’t have time at work to use the one there to be on here as much. I’m going to drop him a line and see what’s up.

  • John__J

Nothing special really. I had a rare evening off so I went to a buddy’s where they made dinner and I brought those wines.
The Clam pasta was great and the Chasselas (aka Fendant) from Valais, Switzerland was the best pairing. Which didn’t matter to me at all as I really enjoyed both wines.
Neither one was some dynamite 100 point wine or anything, but what excites me the most about wine are wines from regions/varietals/etc. I’ve never or barely tried.
The Chasselas was an ’09 and lighter, fresher, more crisp and higher acid than the Trousseau gris. It had a petillant quality to it that went great with the clams and the butter in the dish. Lemon and some other citrus was balanced by a real light creaminess on the finish and a little mineral character.
The Trousseau gris was from ’06 and got better after it was given time to open. The Trousseau was more aromatically challenged but made up for it on the palate. Much rounder, fuller, more lush than the Chasselas, nice viscosity. Had a lot of fruit going on that changed as it opened and was hard to put your finger on. Had a floral quality, melon, and real pear coming out on the finish. It had a distinct muskiness to it too which I enjoyed. It really is it’s own wine, hard to really compare to something else but it had elements that reminded be of Alsatian pinot Gris, and Rhone viognier and Rhone marsanne/roussanne. Later the fruit on it seemed to get more tropical, hints of papaya perhaps pineapple, but well integrated to where it was hard to really pick one thing that stood out over the rest.
But like I said neither were terribly complex with real long finishes but wines I was very happy to have with friends. Sad part is it’s not easy to get Trousseau Gris, so at least shipping finally passed in MD so I at least have a better chance of getting it now if I want.

  • I’ve started watching GOT too though it’s difficult at time to understand what they are saying. The “matrimonial/kingdom in the making” duties are nice to watch. πŸ˜‰

Last night’s HOUSE episode was not one of his best though pretty good since they showed alot of Wilson in a pretty “ehhhh” storyline.

  • Which network is “Damages” airing though tonight we have two Game 7s in hockey.

    Go ‘Hawks, Sabres and Canadians.

  • I watched the first two, yowwwwwza. Actually, the real WW (Lynda Carter) lives not too far from me. Still gorgeous.

Dominus, Ray said he has fixed whatever was keeping him from getting on WLTV. So, he should be over soon. πŸ˜‰ Nostrovia! TTF!
