EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

  • or Port?

  • QOTD: Winning a three-hour tennis match in 90+ degree weather in a third set tiebreaker , the first sniff-sniff and sip from a classic bottle of Champagne and a short, sensuous kiss by candlelight are the Top 3 of my “Big O” list. I would imagine Prince William was in seventh heaven.

    Cheerio!

  • I will send a contribution.

    Thank you!

  • Haahahaha! Cute.

  • Your tennis partner is DI?? Are u kidding me????? No, you’re not kidding, of course. I am a big fan! Loved watching him on the Sunday morning talk shows but have not seen him in a long time and wondered why….. probably because he’s playing tennis with you!! Very cool.

  • Thank you, Dom.

I was tickled pink that they were pouring Napanook yesterday. Now I’m warmed up for Dominus dinner event on June 8 in San Fran. 😉

So let me get this straight.. You played tennis for 4+ hrs and are cooking risotto and chicken??? Very impressive! I had to look up Cornell Chicken on epicurious.. Interesting recipe. Do tell us how it turns out.

Whenever I think of risotto, I think of the lobster risotto at Oran Mor – a restaurant on Nantucket Island. Heavenly! Would go well with the leftover Pommery I’m drinking right now. Not sure if this place is still there (last visit was in 2004). I hope to find out in the near future.

Can’t believe you did the Sideways tour! I bet it was a blast. I haven’t done it and I’m only 300 miles from there. 🙂

  • Good morning my dear;

Licking my wounds from another Caps loss. It’s time to turn out the lights on their hopes of a Stanley Cup. They got caught in a slow, sloppy line change and lost in OT. Oh well. Kudos to the Lightning. There is still a glimmer of hope. Now on to better things.

Glad you enjoyed the Napanook and am looking forward to your special Dom dinner. It should be fantastic.

Yes, over 4 hours of tennis yesterday so I was ready to relax on the deck, quaffing some William Hill Chard and grilling a whole chicken (halved) and whipping up a nice risotto. The lobster risotto on Nantucket Island sounds like one of those foods I would put on my “O” list. The Pommery would have been spot on for sure.

The Sideways tour was alot of fun. I stood at the same spot where Miles dumped the entire spit bucket down his face. A hilarious scene. I was also invited to meet and have dinner with Fess Parker at his restaurant in Los Olivos. Since I usually run around in shorts and a tennis cap, I would have to go back into Santa Barbara, change and then drive back within a couple hours. I wonder opportunity but I couldn’t pull off the logistics. You have to take a weekend and take the tour. There’s a small town called Solvang. A must see!

Well, time to do some work.

    Cheers!

    P.S. We got OBL, finally.

  • It is cool, trust me. He is such a nice guy and a pretty good tennis player. A treat for me for sure to talk to him about the turmoil in the Middle East and I can walk out onto the tennis court and have him personally sign his latest book! He has one coming out next month.

  • I miss Sasha and shows like this: http://tv.winelibrary.com/2009/06/19/a-fathers-day-wine-tasting-episode-692/

    7:20 – 7:55 is just classic

  • Thanks for the tip on solvang and so. I’ll try to cosy along all the way from SF to Portland in october.

  • Are you sure that it’s not a good combo with porter and that nice bread?

  • So Mott, it’s this 1001 time?

  • Anonymous

Solvang is south of SF a few hours.

  • Hi there, D

Yes, we did! Go Special Forces and Navy SEALS!!

So sorry about the Caps. Ouch.

Will definitely do Sideways tour.. maybe this summer. Santa Barbara is a wonderful wknd destination. I’m sure dinner with Fess Parker would have been interesting to say the least! Oh well. I lived in Santa Barbara for a year in mid 90s. I don’t know that much was happening there in the wine world at that time (or I wasn’t paying attention). Solvang – a cute little Danish village in the middle of nowhere. I’ve been there many times (a routine stop during the drive to Los Angeles as a kid/teenager). I didn’t have a clue about the wineries in the area until Sideways movie. Poor Miles.

  • Hi AndersN: Yes, plan on stopping in Solvang for a few hours on your way to Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara is also a must see (Hwy 101 and Hwy 1) from/to SF. You must also visit Big Sur fabulous California coastline along Hwy 1 (aka pacific coast highway)… The Carmel/Monterey peninsula is my favorite place in the state (central CA coast). . They do have a few tasting rooms there as well: Talbott, Ventana, Bernardus, etc. Lisa

  • Thanks for this. I’m sure you two have had some interesting conversations! I’d like to be a fly on the wall (or somewhere).

  • dang, Ok thanks Castello, that might work anyway. Meeting oldest bonusson and friend oct 2 in SF so there might be time.

  • John__J

    I feel your pain Lisa

  • Hailing from a “real” Scandinavian city/country, you may think it’s hokie but it’s a good rendition nevertheless.

They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery? Well, this is it. 😉

    Cheers!

    Dominus,

Solvang is a definite delight. I had the pleasure 2 years ago with some close friends, of which one who lives in Burbank. We played a round of golf in Santa Barbara on the oceanfront at Sandpiper Country Club, then we went inland and did some wine tastings in and around Solvang, A La “Sideways”. Saw the Hotel where they shot the hotel scenes. After spending time in the town of Solvang, we had dinner at “The Hitching Post”, absolutely fantastic. Had a wonderful porterhouse and a lovely bottle of pinot noir, which I think was their label. This was where they shot the restaurant and bar scenes also for “Sideways”. Tell me you got a chance to eat there? So, our friend gave us our own “Sideways” tour of sorts. I’m sure we could both sit over a bottle of Dominus and reminisce about our “Sideways” experience. I hope to make it back there some time soon, at least before the end of the year.

    Nostrovia! TTF

Tonight I’ll be popping, or unscrewing to be more precise, a bottle of WillaKenzie Estate’s 2007 Pinot Meunier out of Willamette Valley. A grape I’m used to seeing in sparklings and as a blender, but I’m not sure I’ve ever had a varietal pinot meunier wine before. So I’m psyched about trying something different although I’m aware that 2007 was a challenging year for vintners in Willamette.
I had a hard time finding reviews for this wine so I guess I’ll have to make up my own mind 🙂 I did find out that they only have 4 acres planted to p. meunier.

NAVY SEALS are the ABSOLUTE best! Go Navy!:)

  • I love that winery. I paid it a visit a few years back but did not try the “mew-nyair.”

I do remember them having these automated loud blasts in the vineyard to keep away the dreaded birds that ate the young flowers.

Let us know what you think. Reviews are welcomed.

    Cheers!

  • ALLAN2.0

When’s 1001 coming? Does anybody out there know??

  • we know that the episode is taped. It’s an interview with prof Boyer at Virginia Tech when Gary visited them. Catch the stuff here. http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/14319644

Welcome back my Brother! Glad to see you here and over there. 😉

Dominus, GV did it again in this latest episode. Hey gave it too me again! Think he is getting the message? 😛

  • John__J

The WillaKenzie meunier really reminded be of a beaujolais villages or a soft cru beaujolais. Really floral, perfumey nose with a plum, grapey palate, low tannin, medium acid. Had some spice on it too that was interesting. Not complex by a long shot, but very easy to drink and did the trick for me. I will say that I much preferred it after chilling it for 10 minutes.

  • I believe he may be hearing you! 😉

  • Believe it or not, if I don’t pull a red out of my temp-controlled wine frig thingy, I will give it a quick chill in the big frig for 10 mins to smooth everything out.

  • I just discovered that a glass of wine before a workout is probably not a good idea. 🙂
    (yeah, I know… duh.)

Hey Dom and TP: Still waiting for wine reviews from wknd.

Looks like I have a lot of catching up to do; but in the mean time here is an awesome Chablis I am drinking at the moment.

    09 Louis Jadot Chablis.

Aroma: Melon, lemon lime, white flower (honeysuckle), apple, pear, it smells really fu**ing good (that is technical wine jargon for those who are keeping track).

So much honey dew melon, followed by pear and a lemon lime minerality that I love about burgundy, Chablis in particular. Plenty of acid for GV to enjoy this wine. If one could blend up blue stone, honeydew melon, apples, pineapple, lemon zest and honeysuckle and turn it into wine this is what it would taste like. 93 points, I think it retailed for around 25 bones; at this quality a steal and a half. TTF!!!!!! I will be posting more I promise!

A blast from the past! awesome.

I tried one a while back from Domain Chandon. It was interesting, similar to a Pinot but in many ways much different. I will be interested to see what you think, we expect tasting notes!!

  • Anonymous

obviously I need to scroll down before I post! sorry.

  • Anonymous

    now you know.

  • Hi Buddy, Welcome back. We appreciate the wine review!
BTW: Once my self-imposed, wine-buying moratorium has passed, I will order zin from St Amant. 🙂

My weekend was tough …. Was not able to review any wine as I was on heavy Advil, Ice and rest.
Achilles got much worse and I had to stop my match. Sooooo I was not able to get my bubbly for review. When I do I will post 😉

  • Oh dear… I had a feeling it would get worse. I really did. I am soooo sorry, TP. Forget about bubbly for now. You are excused from wine review! Take care.
PS: Please let me know if you need a medical referral, OK?

NW – the Over/Under on your DG like/edit buttons is 2 weeks 😉 He’s taking to much heat, by you, not to get on JT to get it done.

Big props to GV, lately he’s been bringing some serious energy to DG. Good work !!!

TTF …. QOTD – are some of the DG shows being taped a day ahead of time???? I never did like the canned episodes on WLTV…… They just seems out of rhythm.

  • Yes, Agree.. GV has been bringing the thunder over there. RE QOTD: it’s OK in my opinion.. I’ll give him a pass for canned episode(s). The poor guy must have an insane schedule, don’t u think?

  • CAPS LOSE AGAIN!!! 🙁

  • Hey TP:

Of course they are taped ahead of time but that doesn’t bother me. As Lisa mentions, his schedule is brutal. I have no life and would find it difficult to tape a show every day. I don’t mind canned episodes since they are usually more relaxed and not rushed.

  • Welcome back cellarrat5

    Nice review. Readily available right?

    Cheers!

  • So sorry to hear that my man. I feel your pain, well, emotionally at least since I’ve never had a bad Achilles.

    Get better.

  • Oh no! not again! I’m sorry, Dom. (insert hug here). Titanic music seems appropriate. Ha!

  • And I have this off-the-wall QOTD for today: Based on alot of comments “over there” asking for the aforementioned buttons to reflect WL, calls for Sasha, post links to WL where they can purchase the wine, remove the scores which WLTV did not have and other requests to be like WLTV begs the question (other than having an app for one phone) what was so bad about WLTV that DG purports to provide the wine masses?

    I’m baffled.

  • Thank you my dear. I feel better now. 😉

  • Anonymous

Time to monetize and “Show me the money” by subscribing to my newsletter and other cool things I have for you.

He couldn’t really convert WLTV into that format after preaching that it was all about educating and exposing people to new wine and that there was nothing more …

To totally disavow WLTV and that JT says DG will never link up to WLTV shows you just how committed they are to monetizing DG.

Hey no problem here with that. If they would have been a bit more “real” and that then more people would have responded, me included. 😉

  • Anonymous

You are probably right, although I still think that daily should be the day of. Heck it can be a 5 minute episode. There is just something about connecting in “real time”. 😉
