EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

2008 Jerome Prevost La Closerie Les Beguines BrutFrench Brut Vintage

  • Dominus, I see your self-imposed exile from posting at DG is over. All it took were a few Manning brothers comparisons?

  • 🙂 Ha! Well, not quite (although I had my share of wine today). I took the day off to celebrate a close friend’s b-day. She wanted to visit Alcatraz Island so off we went. I had been there once in ’79 and wasn’t particularly anxious to return (I was too young to appreciate it back then).. Surprised that it is still a major tourist attraction today. After all, it’s an old prison on a rock.. What’s the big deal? Actually, it’s a great tour. So glad we went. The boat ride to the island is half of the fun. Spectacular views of the GG bridge and the city! I hear that the evening tour is even better.. Then off to Union Sq for shopping and dinner at Morton’s (she wanted steak and merlot.. yeah, I know..)

Thank you for Greek wine links! Sounds like you had a nice evening as well! How did you like the agiorgitko? Nothing like grilled halibut. My favorite fish. 🙂

  • I couldn’t resist. A comment about Peyton brought me out of my shell for one comment. 😉

  • Alcatraz Island . . . dinner at Morton’s . . . nice. I’ll be sure to tell you it’s my birthday the next time I’m in San Fran. 🙂

Your favorite? It’s amazing how much we learn about each other though never having met. I have worked with these donks for over 15 yrs and not one of them knows or cares what my favorite meal and get this, favorite wine would be! No kidding.

The halibut was exquisite if I say so myself. My friend liked it but he’s easy and would not diss a free meal. I had to bring out a few different bottles of wine to appease his palate. His is discerning in that regard which shows I have “educated” him in some way.

Yup pass on this too … Thanks for the info.

All the information I saw on GaryV.com was old news if you have been keeping up with GV through any of his forums.

  • Not today: “gary
Taping new episode in a few hours and will be up by 6-7-8 pm also if you are serious about wines, you have to go look at todays “

  • D: Your friend must have been a happy camper in spite of getting his butt kicked. 🙂

Now how could they not know what your favorite wine would be?????
Unfortunately, this is fairly typical in the workplace from what I’ve experienced. Yes, it is amazing.

You’re correct.. Alcatraz appeal is largely due to the movies. (Clint Eastwood was hot in “Escape from Alcatraz”). I decided to enter one of the solitary confinement cells to see what it was like. Creepy!

  • Yes, it was creepy. One would imagine it would be a good deterrent but then again, what people do to another human being sometimes amazes me.

Most people at work have no clue who or what “Dominus” is the wine world, esp in my “little world.” 🙂

Generally speaking, people really don’t care, at least at my work. I have worked with these bunch of clowns for over 15 years and you see them in the hallway, I smile, say “hi” and they turn the other way and walk on by. Their loss.

  • Alaskan oil pipeline?

  • Interesting topic for discussion really (workplace relationships). I’ve worked in the SF Bay area for most of my adult life but also worked at a Boston Hospital for 2 yrs. At first I thought it was an East Coast-West Coast thing.. (East Coast people being a bit guarded, stuffy, especially at a Harvard-affiliated teaching hospital) but probably not. I’ve heard this same complaint at Stanford many times over the yrs.. I loved living in Boston and developed friendships that I maintain to this day, but it was a rude awakening at first.

  • “Rude” is the good adjective in the DC area. When you travel an hr or south, then everything seems to change. Really nice, down-to-earth people. Like Cubatobaco Ray! 😉

  • Yeah, no kidding. I think the nicest people live in the South and Midwest!

  • Midwest is good people. I have a south Chicago story that enforces their stellar reputation though too long for here.

  • QOTD: I’m having this out on the deck listening to Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No. 2

P.S. Happy Birthday to Lizzie! She’s a sweetheart. Pommery Apenage will be mine on Sunday (going to Baltimore tomorrow and doubt they have a bottle of Champagne in the entire city) and I will raise a toast. Of course, Daniel’s should work. 😉

  • Zmoney hit it on the head “over there” with regards to Mott. Kudos my man.

  • Anonymous

Thank you my dear for the compliment. We in the Heartland of the U.S. like to think of ourselves as down to earth people. Even though where I live is on the edge of the city (Chicago) and Chicagoans are also very nice.

  • Anonymous

I’ll tell ya NYC and LA are probably some of the rudest people I have ever met.

  • I couldn’t agree more! I was so impressed with Chicagoans. Nicest big city I have visited yet.

  • You’re making me wait for the story? Sigh. Okay fine. 🙂

  • I like craggy range SB (PN not bad either).. (and who doesn’t like Rachmaninoff’s No. 2?)… okay I may have overplayed the CD in the 90s, so a tad burned out..

BTW: I had a couple of friends over last Friday and served Cloudy Bay SB.. good stuff! I normally shy away from New Zealand SB, as it can be too green and grassy, but I liked it! Will be great on a hot summer day.

Zmoney is on the money 😉 Mott is da Man.

It is rather strange to me how Mott was not invited to the DG party. I mean really invited.

I’m feeling much better, so this weekend I should make it into SF and get me some bubbles at K&L. Other recommendations other than the Apenage ????

  • Anonymous

Okay so let me get this straight ….. GV we are a stand alone entity (at DG) and we want nothing to do with WL and or WLTV, …….. however I just bought the last X amount of cases of the PV I just reviewed and it ripping and you can get it at WL.

Also, GV to the staff at WL ……… you folks at WL, watch DG and take note of any recommendations I make, then go get them and sell it at WL.

Really, I’m supposed to buy that the WL staff is not paying attention to what GV is doing at DG.???? Hummmm 😉

On a positive note … GV has really turned it around and brought some solid thunder & energy. Better lighting & good zooming = An enjoyable episode to watch.

Instead of that SB you should have a wine cooler 😉

I used to make mine with 1/2 Chablis and the other half diet 7-up.

I do not like the green and grassy taste in my wines, so I never gravitated to the SB’s

Spankings are good to give 😉

Yes it is there loss but or gain 😉

I think it very hard for people to let their guard down in a professional environment, always trying to project an image rather then engaging and expressing who you really are.

I’m lucky in that I don’t see much of that when they come and take a lesson, but I did when I was in the suit and tie world.

    Try Newport for rude 😉

  • Anonymous

Okay LS I’ll wait with ya until Dom publishes.

Dom, your on the clock and just so you know there is plenty of writing space around here.

  • TP: Wait.. I have a better idea! Dom can tell us in person at dinner on June 8. Just a subtle hint. 😉

PS: What the heck are we doing online at 11:00pm?

  • Newport Beach, CA or Newport, RI?

  • Mott is the It-man for WL, tha magic fingers behind the tech to actually launch the vids, tha main man at the control table, the spin doctor of digital?

  • The people of Lyon (that I’ve met), France, are the rudest. Never going to that city again, despite it’s brilliant location.

  • Yes he is and totally agree on being “invited.” For such a “tight community” over there, I find it appalling that only two (SniffSmith and jpakma) of the 330-something comments wished Lizzie a Happy Birthday? If that happened over here, almost every single one would have had wished her a fun time. I guess you get that with “maturity” and “age” . . . like a good wine.

Thanks NWID for the shoutout for M-Day on DG. You got me to come out of my SIP (Self-Imposed Protest). 🙂

TP: If I can make a suggestion on another bottle of bubbles at a reasonable price (for champagne) see if you can find this:
    http://www.cheapercigars.com/product22350.html?gdftrk=gdfV2510_a_7c604_a_7c4305_a_7cSWS_d_77979

She (I call champagnes “she” since they are so smooth and refined and give me goosebumps) has a sibling that can be had for less money so both are great. When I taste this champagne it reminds me of waking up on a cold, damp morning and biting into a warm piece of toast. Sublime.

Of course, you can always go to the Bollinger which never disappoints.

    James Bond 007

P.S. How’s the Achilles? I play two hours of dubs today and tomorrow morning.

  • If I could be there, I would Lisa S. Now that would be a great time!

I see June 8 is a Wednesday! Gosh I hate wine dinners during the week. I guess I would need to take the entire week off! Hmmmmmmm

Is the dinner close to this low-rent abode? http://www.relaischateaux.com/en/search-book/hotel-restaurant/soleil/

  • Writing space is getting tight over here >>>>

    🙂

  • They are for sure.

NWID: Have you been to a jazz club called “The Cotton Club” in South Chicago? I looked for a link and now I see it has closed! Oh no!!!! “Memories, sweetened through the ages just like wine” — EP

  • Eerie how we think so much alike. 😉

  • All the wine geeks, pundits, sommeliers can say what they want but nothing gets better than Cloudy Bay SB. It put NZ SB on the map and it has been a stellar producer (for me) every since.

Every time I pour a glass, it brings a smile to my face. Other than picking up a tennis racquet or holding a woman’s hand, nothing else brings the “thunder.”

    Cheers!

  • Wine coolers! I remember those days . . . unfortunately since it reminds me how old I am. 🙁

  • Seems like Mott only appears on the eps filmed in the old WLTV office. Maybe he doesn’t travel well. Miss him.

Also, while the paucity of Happy B-days is notable, I found the lack of a Mothers Day theme from GV to be even more unusual from a man who speaks so often about family and has a young’un at home. Unless there’s going to be a weekend episode?

And GV made it sound like the explanation of the 91+ score had to do as much with his respect for the producer as it did for how the wine actually showed. I think it’s time for some Brown Bag shows…

  • I think we’re in the same boat if we remember wine coolers. Oh well… Your as young as you feel! 50 is the new 40 and 40 is the new 30, etc. blah, blah.. 🙂

  • Really? Wow. Now that is sad.

  • You really do like to “rough it” don’t you, D? Might as well say you stayed at a Holiday Inn last night. 🙂 It is the nicest place in Napa from what I’ve heard. It’s about 90 min from SF I think. I don’t like that it’s on a Wednesday either (definitely not going to work the next day).

Off to visit Mom for the wknd. Cheers!

California 🙂 never been to the other one…

Achilles is in rough shape. I will need a good two weeks to get it to a level of manageable movement. I’m hobbling around right now and need more recovery time.

Good news is I’ll be wine shopping tomorrow. 4 hours of tennis sounds like lots of fun !!!

  • I thought 50 was the new 80. You don’t have to take crap from anyone and nobody can avoid you speakinmg your mind, doing what you like

  • For Lyon yes 🙂

OK, I’m pulling out a Peter Weygandt Selection I have wanted to try for sometime now and will see how it develops.

Dominus, It wasn’t my intention to bring you out of your “SIP”. I am glad though! Seeing a lot of the old crew back together is an awesome sight.

I just have to give “Props” when “Props” are due. Everyone I shouted out to are “AWESOME” and it wouldn’t be the same without each and everyone of them!
