EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

  • 😉 Sounds perfect! I’ll be there sometime in the next 9 months.. I’ve not seen the Jefferson Memorial up close and have not yet seen the WWII memorial yet either, plus I need to visit my great aunt and cousin. I could spend weeks visiting the memorials and Smithsonian museums (I’ve rushed through them in the past). I got goosebumps when you mentioned The Willard. I have not stayed there but I’ve been in the bar for a drink. Lovely hotel! I’ve stayed near it at the JW Marriott and a Hyatt years ago (both unremarkable). The last time I was in town (8 yrs ago) I stayed at the Hay-Adams, which was lovely, too. I told my brother and his family to stay at The Willard a few yrs ago when they were in DC. They did and loved it. You have good taste, D. Cheers!

  • A couple years ago I was into Oregon pinots, but after the infatuation wore off a bit it seemed like the QPR wasn’t there so now they’re just in the regular rotation.

  • It is tough finding pinots in that price range from Oregon . I guess I haven’t had as many as Dom since he’s in an Oregon wine club. He did mention Soter North Valley a few wks ago.. Should be a good one.

I like the Ponzi Willamette Valley, and it is $26 at my local Costco.

At the moment, I am drinking Penner-Ash 2008 Willamette Valley pinot noir. This was a hit at a local Oregon tasting last fall, but it’s $35..

I love this wine. It is burgundian in style yet not too stinky earthy.. nice cherry fruit.

  • Thanks for the info, Lisa. I’ve only seen the Ponzi in the $40+ price range … gotta start looking around more.
After a couple months heavy with in-state family events, to which I generally bring a couple bottles, my cellar is 20+ bottles short of its usual level – especially short on pinot noir and Italian reds – so I’m hoping to replenish without busting the wine budget.
I don’t know about you folks, but I notice that the average price per bottle I buy in the fall and winter is exceeds what I grab in the summer. Some subliminal thing about those wines and meals consumed indoors in the cold weather at a relaxed pace being more ‘serious’ than hanging out in the summer in shorts throwing a frisbee around, I guess.

  • Hmmm I learned something last night on DG. I would debate that Sauvignon Blanc is the main varietal in Sauternes. Sancerre, yes, not Sauterne. I always thought it was Semillon. I do know that Chat d’Yquem is 80% Semillon and 20% SB. Of the 700 comments, I believe I saw one person debate that fact. I learn something every day.

  • Today’s Headline: “Roddick Has Hot Wife but Sucks on Clay”

  • Anonymous

Take what you can, and he’s a lot like John McEnroe on clay. 😉 Hey, Dominus do you remember if Conners ever win the French?? I don’t …..

Still in the end, how many Americans (or any other players for that matter) can say that they were number one in the world and have model for a wife ????? 😉 Jimmy Conners, John McEnroe, Andy Roddick, & ??

I hate that no American are good on clay, however I believe that we will always be behind unless we start training our kids on newly built red clay courts here in the states (the green hard true does not cut it).

We also need only one National Tennis Training Center where promising players go to live and train without the parent involvement.

No American’s in the Top ten and 1 (Roddick) in the top 20. American Tennis has hit a all time low :-(((

I want to be Roddick 😉 LOL …..

  • Anonymous

Have not had either ….. only Far Niente’s Dolce. So I did not catch or could comment to that debate 😉

  • I also wondered about that comment from Gary, shall we fact find? Bad of me not to check and point that out.

  • My swedish wine lexicon says mainly semmillion and then some parts Sauvignon Blanc, and sometimes Muscadelle.

  • Anonymous

    No I have not ….

Sojourn ?? ….. time to fire up the Google search engine and cellar tracker and find out what your pinot palate is all about 😉

  • I saw one like that too. “The weather reaches it’s peak today”

  • Anonymous

Anybody else noticing how so many more comments not are coming from the WL staff 😉

K-murph, Ian, Brandon, JT, GV …. ??? ….. now if only sasha and mott would start commenting then it would be a family affair. Calling you out Mott and Sasha 😉

TTF …. when will GV throw out the next non wine QOTD ????

  • What was that old song by Sly and the Family Stone? “It’s a Family Affairrrrrr” 😉

“But there will be no connection between DG and WL!”

    QOTD: Tonight

  • Nope, my man Jimmy Connors never won the French. The only major he did not win though “some experts” believed he would have won the French in ’74 if he had not been banned to play at Roland Garros. If I remember correctly he had beaten Borg on clay in ’72 and ’73 and beat everyone like a drum in ’74. Who knows what the outcome would have been but one can imagine what could have been had he played.

He was the first and now one of five players to have won a Grand Slam tournament on hard court, grass and clay.

Yes, being Roddick wouldn’t be half bad. Just one night! 😉

P.S. I remember Patti McGuire. Yikes!

  • Ding! Ding! Ding!

  • I’ve had some lovely Sauternes and a few in my ghetto cellar but I’ve never had the privilege to have a D’Yquem.

    “Yquem I Saw” 🙂

  • Anonymous

You must be talking forrest hills U.S. Open 😉 but not one to win all 4 majors (french,us,aussie, and wimbledon) 😉

  • well I think Stefan Edberg won all junior titles in those tournaments

  • Anonymous

GV basically ordered them to start posting or else. It is is nice seeing them all though!

  • Anonymous

You know I have followed Roddick for quite awhile and he never ceases to disappoint. He is getting on in age and I don’t think he will be that #1 we were hoping he would be.

  • Anonymous

You are right Dominus. Semillon is the main varietal in Sauternes.

  • Correct, as I said in an earlier post, he did not win the French.

  • I’m sure you are right. I saw Stefan at Wimbledon and the US Open. What a class act.

  • QOTD: Well, nothing worth mentioning in Menlo Park.. Palo Alto is better. Agree w/ John Farrin that Boulevard in SF is fantastic.

I choose this one: The Village Pub in Woodside, CA. A nice “date” restaurant.
    http://www.thevillagepub.net/home.php

The wine list is unbelievable. They have a jeroboam of ’94 Dominus on the menu for only $2,000. 😉

  • Dom, I bet it’s heavenly! I love French food.
As I’ve said before, the French are so good at sooo many things!

  • Anonymous

Wow Woodside ….. flash back 😉 … The Dutch Goose is it still around?? probably no wine list there but lots of good times. 😉

  • Anonymous

Now you’ve done it Lisa …. All I can think about is getting my hands on some more Roar 😉

Oh the power of suggestion !!!

Just opened a 2002 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Fay ‘Block 5C Merlot’. Letting it open up and as it sits on my computer desk it’s staring me down with it’s rustic light brown tint and daring me to drink it up early.

I was in the wine club for a few years and now I’m reaping the rewards of cellaring. It smells so good and so Napa Valley. A very subtle wine that needs at least an hour to open up.

We’d have to bring all the TTF participants to drink that bad boy up in one night. You know, 1994 was a very good year in Napa 😉

I would bet ya anything that’s about being able to say to the DG audience and others that the show is blowing up. The number count are not really organic thou, they are manufactured.

Don’t really care but I do find it interesting.

Got no problem with WL staff posting (they are all great people), I only think that it’s not good if the employee is “made” to do so.

Not cool, and to me the vibe of their post seems a bit forced.

  • Anonymous

Roddick’s ranking will only go one way now …. Put your hopes on Ryan Harrison now 😉

  • Anonymous

I was just reminiscing about Forrest Hills …. My first real exposure to watching professional tennis 😉 Orantes, Dibbs Solomon,Rameriz, Gottfried, Smith, Ashe, and Conners.

  • Anonymous

Not surprising .. what a sweet game and so athletic. Loved watching him play and win or lose he did it with class !!!

  • Mmmmm… Stag’s Leap.. smells divine! Oh come on, TP!! Take a sip!!! 🙂

Hey, I envy anyone with a cellar (or some form of decent wine storage).

Dutch Goose is in Menlo Park… about 3 miles from where I live. Big Stanford hangout. Was it in Woodside at some point? I hear there is beer, burgers, and sawdust on the floor.. So, no… I’ve not yet been there (yet).

  • Anonymous

I remember the peanut shells on the floor not the sawdust 😉 I’m sure your right about it being in Menlo Park, and I don’t believe it has ever moved.

My college doubles partner lived 4 miles from there and so it just happened to be on the way home. I also went there many times with the Stanford players when I worked on the Farm. you are right, it was one of their favorite hangouts.

You live are in a great spot in the world …… love that trendy area 😉 so much positive energy and talent there. Kinda like Los Gatos where I lived when I was in the Bay Area.

Oh yea, the Stag’s is drinking exceptionally well now ….. very French in style (with its 100% Merlot) but with a kick of Napa fruit taste at it’s core. 😉

  • Amen to that!

    Au revoir!

  • I remember them all myself. Actually, Harold Solomon is an area DC boy.

  • So glad you finally had a glass and reported back! Sounds like my style of wine!

You’re right, TP, it is peanut shells on the floor at Dutch Goose. oops. Yes, it is very nice around here and less than 2 miles from work. Expensive as hell, so I live in a very small place.

Funny you mentioned Los Gatos! I lived there for a year after I got married (a long, long, long time ago)… just off of Main Street in the hills above the Ferrari dealership (tiny cottage)..Yrs later after we split, my ex moved back to Los Gatos for a while and I moved north to be closer to work. I love Los Gatos and visit a couple of times a year. Last summer I hiked up to Testarossa winery (was a monastery in the past).. They have some nice pinots there.

Are you north of SF now?

I am a noted authority and wine aerator reviewer.

    Cheers!

  • I could do this one in a heartbeat. Nice. 😉

  • boosting comments stats, Is that legal 🙂

  • They also have a nifty “Dupe” feature that elevates the numbers too.

  • Hi Debbie,

I’m certainly not an authority like my friend below, but am familiar with aerators and, of course, wine.

  • Fabulous. Oui… in a heartbeat! Nice ambience in #1 and 2#

Sooooooo, do I have to wait for chardonnay story, too? 🙂

  • Yes my dear. I need to find ways to pique your interest. 🙂

When I’m bored (which is 99% of the time) I will document this epic tale of wine perseverance. The tale begins: I ordered a glass of French chardonnay at Les Crayeres that was produced by an iconic champagne winery that I thought was magical. I asked the sommelier where I may be able to procure some of this wonderful nectar and he said “This wine does not travel.”

    (to be continued)

    😉

  • Sitting here on the deck after a long day at work, quaffing a nice NZ SB with some guac and salsa and listening to some amazing music. During times of reminiscing, the TTF QOTD is:

    What do you listen to?

Here’s a few of my favorites:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJU706WZGhU&feature=fvst

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Su8LXNS16A

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XttTpZHQgJw

Does one wonder if I like the piano? I am trying to learn each of these pieces but when I get frustrated, I open a bottle of Dom and play the next tune.

P.S. And yes, I can dance as well as the guy at 01:30 which reminds me of south Chicago story at The Cotton Club. Wow. Turn up the volume for this one.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWptXUblA4E

    Cheers! 😉

  • Don’t diss on Mott. He knows what he likes in wine which is all one needs.

Elk Cove should win this H2H.
