EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

2008 Jerome Prevost La Closerie Les Beguines BrutFrench Brut Vintage

until then, I’ll be here 😉

Sounds like wine and web … corked (sp) …. and one day not to far from now DG.

As soon as his Wine TV show is up and running DG is dead. However I think the TV show will never take hold and go the way of Wine and Web …..

  • Anonymous

    amen … 😉

His short term focus will be his long term undoing … watch 😉

  • Anonymous

Well I hope you still check over here now and then 😉 We still have the Aussie to plan out 😉

My guess it that GV has a percentage of sales for a period of time 🙂 after the episode airs.

  • True Lisa, It’s his life, his business. I have to reconsider my position. To watch or not to watch. I have been in this for 3 years straight now, every epsiode, and backtracked almost every episode of WLTV to learn about wine, to get a consumer report on new grapes, regions and so on.
I started posting reviews on Cork’d to just get the advantage of being in a reviewing community. But boom cancelled, because one person quit the organization??(the official version)
I respect that if one have done 1000 episodes you can stop. But don’t promise anything else then. Say it’s stop. Even that it must have been hard to abandon the baby.
Gary is a good man, nice and kind, he signed a copy of his latest book for me via my sis in law i Portland, she said the same thing as you. It is not Gary as a person I’m a bit critic(?) of, it’s his business plans. beacuse this is busniess even if its free in one aspect.

  • Oh is Wine and Web gone too?

  • good call

  • For you or Lisa, yes. We have the Oz Open.

  • Thanks John and again, congrats. Job well done.

Yes it has Anders. It was talked about in the comments in one of the last episodes over at DG.

  • True. Well said, AndersN. It’s the business plan. I don’t understand it.

  • Well, that’s good news! Who else would send me updates of SF Bay Area happenings, cool wine reviews, hot music videos and classical tunes? 🙂

  • Guys I appreciate the kind words and no one understood the business plan of WLTV 😉 in 2006! I am not trying to do anything bad here, I am sorry, I changed my mind, changing ones mind is part of life and business, I respect the thoughts and dont want to ruffle feathers but I feel good and right about my decision

  • I am beyond stunned by this and feel awful, I am so sorry you all feel this way, I just dont know what else to see, this maybe the saddest post and worst I have ever felt about reading anything about me

  • The intent was not to hurt feelings, but more to speculate and theorize about the continuing WLTV to DG evolution. Of course, from the vantage point of a viewer, we have incomplete data, so the theories could be wrong… it’s just that it’s hard to reconcile it all. Something just does not compute.

You can put a positive spin on it… It shows just how much we cared for and valued WLTV. Thanks again for that. It was special and fun.

Having viewed WLTV#1000 and DG#1 again, I can say I can respect the decision and motivations given for the move. But two months have passed and several of the original factors have been jettisoned or unrealized (for example, not taping ahead [why does that matter, anyway?], not being iPhone only, better functionality for interaction on computers and mobile devices). So I’m confused, and left with what I perceive is DG’s diluted, less entertaining content on a web site that’s more difficult to navigate. That last one really has me stumped – the stated priority was “entertaining and useful” but if DG’s web site is less functional and less than half of DGers own an iPhone… I just don’t get it. We’re repeatedly told things will be addressed ‘soon’, but two months later, in spite of having Vaynermedia’s resources behind them and not some 3rd party, they’re not addressed. Theory: There are other, higher business priorities that don’t map onto ‘entertaining and useful’ as I perceive it. But hey, there’s a lot more comments at DG, so I’m figuring I’m just not the target audience anymore. And for that, I’m sad.

So I’ve decide to take 2 months off – no WLTV or DG viewing until mid-July. Then I’ll check back and see what’s up. A clean slate.

Thanks again for WLTV – it was ‘great’. For my palette, DG’s just ‘meh’ so far, and in the process my loyalty has been shaken for a few reasons. Maybe with time off DG will seem better by July.

Take care & stay healthy everyone. And best wishes to Mott, too.

May the Thunder be with you.
    – Colonel H

    I fully understand. Go Gary!

  • ALLAN2.0

    RIP WLTV 🙁

    …….. oh well…

This DG thing might not be so bad after all……………………………………………………………… Stayin’ tuned. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ALLAN2.0

The last nail went in the coffin, when you went Shakespearian with watch or not….. 😉
We’ll learn to live without…… Memories man, memories.

  • ALLAN2.0

    Don’t feel sad man, c’mon.

  • ALLAN2.0

    Focus on NOW folks, please!!!

  • In spite of our rants, we (most of us) will continue to watch DG and learn from you, Gary. You really have changed the wine world for the better. Gary at DG is better than no Gary at all (IMO).

I believe that your motives are genuine and that you are really a good guy!

Thanks for caring and taking the time to respond.

  • ALLAN2.0

    Sold it to Mott 🙂

  • Sure. But memories one cannot live without, becuase they tell you what life you had and eases the process of choosing the path to take.

Gary got a good archive here with lots of winefacts and stuff. May the Thunder Man preserve that force for others to see.

  • Anonymous

    what does that mean ????

  • Anonymous

@ andersN – like the way you think 😉 @ allen 2.0 what’s wrong with memories, that the basis of life to everyone. To create positive memories and to then reflect and enjoy them over a glass of wine (preferably a good red for me).

Of course we’ll watch DG for as long as it goes, but can we not keep alive the good memories and friends we have built here ???

  • Anonymous

changing ones mind is okay. changing business directions of course it’s okay, Being told something and then not following thru with friends that is a different story 😉 see personal email 😉

  • Anonymous

Hey back off that light switch 😉

  • Anonymous

I’m sure the laid back friday couch will make an appearance on DG. everything else from WLTV has made it over there …. The question is “Did it really ever leave” or is DG the same as WLTV. Somebody tell me the difference again ?? 😉

  • Anonymous

    look who’s talking ;-)’ SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  • John__J

If it’s over for wltv and Gary changed his mind or whatever is happening then fine. DG is different, it may have more tech stuff going for it and it’s there for us just like it is everyone else. Personally I feel the community over there isn’t the same.

But at least if wltv is done, but the comments still exist, then that kinda means this is OUR comment page now- for all of us who’ve stuck around over here and kept the chat going since this last episode. That part of it is pretty cool I think.

2 months Colonel? I respect your decision but don’t forget to check back in when that times up.
    Cheers

  • John__J

I don’t think anyone here meant to or wants to hurt your feelings. And I don’t think anyone here would be taken aback if they didn’t really care.

@ john_I gary sent out a personal note to TTF and wanted us to forward to you and colonel.

Did you get that email from GV ??? If not, I can forward to you and attach my reply. Let me know.

    [email protected].

Until the lights go out 😉 …. here is my next wine review. I know GV is not a Napa Cab fan, not his style but it is for me.

    TTF ….

    2002 Joseph Phelps “Backus”

A beautiful Silverado Trails wine. On the nose over powering aromas of dark bing cherries, leather and cedar. That carried over on the palate to add lightly toasted oak with a sweet glycerine. Hitting it’s prime drinking window …. Yummy 94-96 pts

  • and here is mine. Me and my lovely just took some paprika, crusched tomato, curry and onion, garlic , melted it down in butter and added shrimp. Served with fresh baked greek bread. To that I open my last Domaines du Chateau de Riquewihr Les Murailles Riesling 2006

Hmm 🙂 A very strong scent of apple cider, a spritzig feel, then lot of crushed white pebbles and sea water. Behind that, a subtle nose of pineapple and pear mixed with a pinch of white pepper and green grapes. Lovely nose. Taste is fresh, clean and razor sharp. Apple, pear, starfruit, lychee salad white pepper and a oyster like thingy. Mid palate is true to the freshness and razor sharp acid spikes the tongue. Back end brings two types of sensation, a smooooth liquid filled with apple and pineapple. starfruit that somenone have pourd som sort and “white” balsamic vinegear on top and sharp heat of white pepper and flint stone. The heat lingers long time. Very fresh mouth feel on this. And so darn complex that every new sip brings something else to mind. So where can I get another bottle is the question. I scored this 91 p last year, but this is clearly a mistake this is more like 94. ( I found the 07, maybe one have to buy and hope?)

I’m off wine shopping and will be on the look out 😉 Nice review !!! Like the sauce & shrimp combo …… gonna have to give it a go and recreate your dish 😉

After the comments on WLTV at DG, I came over here just to see if the site was still active. Didnt realize there was still a conversarions going on at this place. As someone who watched WLTV since about episode only off and on since 2008, the last 50-75 shows daily, then over to Daily Grape, I guess I don’t have the same sense of loyalty (and the disappoint that now exists with GV changing his tune) that some of you have, but I certainly understand it. Looks like a lot of good friends were created by this community. I hope to interact with you all in the future at DG.

As far as the lights going out on WLTV, I would guess that so long as there is SEO ranking and brand identity benefits to having the site live, it will remain so.

  • John__J

    See you on DG

  • John__J

Well I’ve accepted and gotten past the fact that WLTV maybe no more and whatever happens happens. I dont have any desire to go on about it. I’ve seen Gary’s email response, and things are what they are and that’s fine.
Personally my biggest thing about DG is that it feels less like a family over there. I’m partially guilty of that though as I’ve spent more time here than there and commented there a lot less. I’ve even got a few back episodes over there I haven’t seen yet.
I’ve heard that there’s been comments over there too like there have been over here in the past couple days and I have to say honestly I haven’t really read the ones over at DG about that very much yet either.
Perhaps with more time it will feel more like a family over there to me. Either way like I said last night I’m not going to stop commenting with you guys over here as long as we can, and if it gets shut down eventually we still got the emails now to stay in touch.
I love having this space now to catch up with all you guys and hear about all the wines and reviews on them YOU guys have.

  • John__J

One last thing I forgot to say below.
I’m going to ask a QOTD today as I’ve never done that here before and I’ve been wondering about this and trying to find one for quite some time. It’s a pretty nerdy one so forgive me.

QOTD: Have any of you guys ever had a DRY Auslese Riesling from Germany?

Personally when it comes to Riesling I normally lean towards the drier styles out of Alsace, and there are some in Australia and New Zealand I’ve really enjoyed. I love the petrol notes on an older Riesling. I do like German Rieslings sometimes, but most are off dry or sweet and I normally don’t go for that.
I’m sure most know this and I don’t want to be geeky but German rieslings get graded on ripeness level. Starting with the lowest to the highest you got kabinett, spatlese, auslese, beerenauslese and eiswein’s, and finally trockenbeerenauslese.
More sugar doesn’t mean sweeter if its fully fermented. Usually auslese and above is a really sweet dessert wine. But I’ve read about and I’m certain there are dry (fully fermented) auslese Rieslings. I hear they’re usually 14% abv and upwards, pretty big full wines. Yet I’ve never been able to find one in the states, and when I ask wine reps about them half the time I feel like they think I’m nuts and that they don’t exist.
I imagine them to big these big rich Rieslings perhaps similar to what some can be in Alsace and would love to get my hands on one.
So if any of you guys have had one or have seen one, I’d love to hear about it.

I love the ss chris comment and thread at DG. solid info. 😉

  • John__J

When taking the comments and emails into account over the past couple days, for me one thing comes to mind, “How in the world did we get here?”

Me personally, I’m hoping not to comment on it again. I’m happy DG is going, I’ll continue to watch and comment there. And as long as this page is up, whether it’s the same 10 or so of us or more that keep this comment page alive, even if there are no new episodes, I’ll be here too.
