EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

  • Wow… you pulled a big one out of the cellar, TP. Impressive!! I’ve not had Backus but had the 02 Insignia over the holidays.. yummy.

I’m drinking Provenance 07 Rutherford Napa cab right now. Popped and poured through Vinturi aerator.. I like it this wine.. dark cherry, cocoa, light tannins, easy drinking cab.

Have you had Erna Schein cabs and blends? I’m a big fan.

  • Nice AndersN. Excellent pairing, too! Greek Bread? Did you bake it? My mother always raved about the bread in Greece.. I had no idea what she was talking about until I visited Greece a few yrs ago. πŸ™‚

watch your spelling over there πŸ˜‰

Nice review Anders. I can honestly say I haven’t heard of this Riesling, but I’m sure I will be on the lookout for it the next time I’m in my stores of choice. Thanks! πŸ˜‰

You know DG may not be the same, but I am finding that a lot of the old timers are starting to show back up and I for one am glad for that. Where as, when WLTV stopped and DG started everyone seemed to go on some sort of hiatus. Well, I have been seeing more and more coming back over the last few episodes and it is, for that reason only, feeling a bit more like home. I will continue as I have said all along frequent both.

  • Anonymous

I have not had the Erna Schein, but I’m about to cellar track and google it. I think your cab style is close to mine especially if you like Insigna ….. or Dominus, Beringer Reserve, Plumpjack, Lewi, etc ….

    off to research ….

We all have a tendency to write and post so quick and don’t check our spelling. πŸ˜›

  • John__J

Ha! touche. (not sure if I spelled that right πŸ™‚ )

  • John__J

I popped in today and noticed the same.
I’m quite grateful you can edit over here. Otherwise you would have just read I “pooped” in there today

  • Yes, please do… I think you’ll like them. This is a relatively new label for Behrens and Hitchcock. Les Behrens took over when Hitchock retired a few yrs ago. I think they may produce one bottle of B&H a year however. . Erna Schein was Les’ mother’s name.. Big, bold cabs big fruit, oak, etc… Their cabs and bordeaux-type blends are my favorites. My brother introduced me to these wines a few yrs ago(he has quite the cellar). Interesting labels, too. http://behrensfamilywinery.com/

  • Hi John, I also like the drier styles of Alsace. Last month I was at a local tasting of German wines and 7 of them were rieslings. You’re right they were either sweet or off-dry. However, there was one dry, acidic riesling in the lineup that several people liked: ’09 Emrich Schonleber Riesling Trocken. I don’t think it is Auslese.. but it was dry. I bought two bottles of the ’09 Von Hovel Riesling Kabinett “Oberemmeler Hutte” -off dry.. I think it will pair well with Thai food, or other spicy food.

WLTV R.I.P., I will miss it.

  • There are lots of them but they tend to be a bit on the +30 dollar side and usually from Rheingau and Pfalz. Mosel is more sweetish…Geheimrat J is a producer that often make good trocke, even SpΓ€tlese trocken. Leitz has a big assortment, maybe they have what you are looking for.

  • hehe , did the Vinturi aerator work?

  • use really good crushed tomatoes and lots of curry

  • use really good crushed tomatoes and lots of curry

  • Actually I received the Vinturi aerator as a gift about 2 yrs ago.. They definitely work in my opinion.. Will be interesting to see if we get one in the mail from Debbie though . On that note, one of doctors I work with has a tennis partner who designed aerating wine glasses.. He’s asked me a few times to try them out, but I haven’t yet.

  • Anonymous

Boy, take a picture, that seams complicated. Hope you get your new aerator. I believe D signed up for one too.

  • I did. I will let you know if it arrives.

You are really putting in your time over there, and I unfortunately have been very busy and unable to put much time into either location, but my heart will always be here (I just realized how much that sounds like that song from titanic, but my love for WLTV is titanic in size, so I suppose in a lame pop culture sense it is appropriate).

[email protected] (sorry I haven’t been here for the last few days/weeks, I will try and keep posting if there is a site to post on in the future).

Fortunately trump has taken his name out of the race, thank the political gods (and NBC).

@ TP & colonel, Those last few comments about ego stroking and undoing seems a little harsh. Not that I am necessarily disagreeing with you’re overall points, I would just HOPE that you are wrong; and hope there will still be some reminiscence of a WLTV like community. After a certain point I believe that all the grumblings and lamenting only takes us so far, this of coarse does not mean we have to stop. But which ever direction things end up going, there are other means of communication we can utilize to try and keep the community we obviously car so much about alive. Perhaps one of the more technologically savvy members can start our own blog and invite people via e-mail. I realise many of us are unable or unwilling to take on a project like this due to many reasons I am sure, just a thought.

cr5, we, or should I say I have missed seeing you around the old place and over at DG. I know our time is occupied by other things, but the regulars are what really made this experience a much better experience. I find myself thinking about everyone here and at DG quite a bit so I find the time to spend a few minutes here and a few minutes there to try and keep in the loop. Any time you can spare and check in with us is always appreciated. Just don’t be a stranger. πŸ˜‰

I appreciate your kindhearted sentiments, and really do feel a special connection to this site, even if it is on it’s last legs. I remember looking forward to posting on certain episodes and discussion topics more than watching the episodes! I will do my best to keep up with everyone on both sites as long as they are around.

    TTF!!!!!!

The fact that you care enough to check in on the old forum every once and a while speaks volumes as far as I am concerned. I must admit I do agree with Tennispro, Colonel and others to a certain extent, but I have been watching all the episodes over there and trying to keep up with commenting (although it is much more difficult for various reasons). we are all grateful for what you created, and are sad to see a large part of that “discontinued”. DG has its advantages for some, but in all truthfulness it does not FEEL the same. Thank you again for all that you have done and continue to do for the wine world; after all, that was and still is the most important contribution you can make.

I’m surprised by the quality of the Chateau St Jean Chardonnay as an everyday drinking wine. Drinking the 2009 Sonoma County and it’s good! Nose has some pineapple, guava, melon and is one of those wines that smells as good as it tastes. For $10 bucks it is well worth the price of admission πŸ˜‰

TTF …. What’s the last under 15 bottle of wine that brought the THUNDER ????

  • Anonymous

    Hey DOMINUS πŸ˜‰

    Where you B ???

If you don’t come back here then by all means set up the blog you mentioned πŸ˜‰

but ….. we miss you around here !!!!

  • I’m surprised, too, TP. Thanks for tip. I’ve not had Chateau St Jean chardonnay in the past few yrs.

I was surprised by a few under-$15 bottles this past year:
    1. Kali Hart Chardonnay ’08 Monterey County. This, as you probably know, is Talbott’s third label. (forget about their pinot -did not like it).
    2. Brander Sauvignon Blanc 09 Santa Ynez Valley..(I know you don’t like SB but this is not green and grassy (doesn’t taste like someone’s backyard)… You might like it. πŸ™‚
    3. Highway 12 -’08 Cab/merlot blend.. Sonoma.. Costco has it (or had it) and wine guy talked me into buying it several months ago.. I should have bought more.

On another note, I can’t believe the wine I’m seeing on the shelves at local wine shops these days! I guess the recession has hit Silicon Valley … A magnum of Sea Smoke 08 Southing, Kistler pinot noir, as well as lots of Kistler chardonnay..
And, Williams Selyem Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast. I had to buy this one after Dom’s description of it a couple of weeks ago.
    πŸ™‚

  • I’ll send you powerpoint pics of these wine glasses.. Interesting concept.

  • Dominus? Never heard of it. Someone please enlighten me. πŸ˜‰

P.S. I’m in a pretty good mood today at it’s only 8:15 a.m.! Thank goodness for open communication between friends.

  • Here I am my man. Thank you Lisa my dear. What a sweetheart. (heart going pitter pat)

I’m not going anywhere. I love you guys too much. I had PEPCO (Potomac Electric Power Company) turn the lights back on and we’re good to go. It took a couple bottles from my cellar but was worth it.

I will also look into setting up a blog where we can post reviews, pics of our recipes and journeys across this magnificent globe. And, of course, links to music or mp3s that you enjoy with your bottle of Pommery Apenage. There’s another idea for DG. Link to photos, etc.? Oh yes, we can do that here. πŸ˜‰ I actually think it would be great to have a “Skype-type” tool where GV can post his show and then all of the Vayniacs would be tasting along or interacting in “real time.” Now that would be cool.

For my concerns with DG, I think I have turned a corner. Our voices were heard and I had my personal catharsis. As they say, life is too short to drink bad wine and let’s not sweat the small stuff. I’m here for the long haul but will keep up my guard like a boxer. “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” — Muhammed Ali

So I raise my glass to the Vayniac Nation and we shall march on! Bring us (WL or DG) your reviews, joys of that magnificent meal or even any of life sorrows thrown your way if you’d like. As Sly & the Family Stone said, “We are family.”

    Cheers!

  • Joseph Phelps has a 2nd or 3rd bottling of its cab called “Innisfree.”
    http://www.snooth.com/wine/joseph-phelps-cabernet-sauvignon-innisfree-2005/

I really like this wine though for me in DC it’s hard to find. But you ask the “last” bottle? I have linked this up in a previous post. This was quite good paired with grilled rockfish that I caught out on the Chesapeake Bay.

    Cheers!

  • Here in MD (esp Montgomery County) we are not that fortunate since wine is controlled by the state so we seldom see the likes of Selyem or Sea Smoke. If I see either one, then all bets are off and I scoop up all of them.

Have you tried the Selyem my dear? I am curious to hear your review.

I need to find the vintage and vineyards of my Sea Smoke. When I do, I will post and if you can procure some, we can have a coast-to-coast wine tasting. Another idea just hit me. Does everyone here have Skype via video? Can we have multiple people on one channel? If so, we could pick a time, a spectacular (rating-wise) bottle of wine determined by the TTF, a little canape and do our own little food & wine tasting? Maybe record it and post it to a blog? Hmmmm, the wheels are turning. Of course, I don’t want anyone to see me so I’ll be in “costume.”

    πŸ˜‰

  • I concur with AndersN above and can throw another German riesling (Donnhof) into the mix. It surely will not disappoint. As a matter of fact, it is probably my #1 “go to” German riesling, especially this time of year when you can find beautiful and delicious spargel at your local farmer’s market. Here’s a nice review that you may enjoy.

    http://winerant.blogspot.com/2008/01/dnnhoff-riesling-2006.html

  • Now THAT is a great post!
    Welcome back, Dom! xo

  • Hi D, I have a couple of bottles of 08 Sea Smoke Southing and one bottle of Ten. Great idea about coast-to-coast tasting!

I don’t have Skype video. Hmmm.. interesting idea. Hey, no costumes allowed unless it’s Halloween. πŸ™‚

No, I have not yet opened the W. Selyem . It’s ’09 and I was told it “needs time.” I’m not the most patient person around, but will wait (and wait and wait).
    πŸ˜‰

  • Hahaha! Very funny. Yeah well, the closest I’ve had is Napanook so I’m no help. Cheers!

P.S. Oui, thank goodness for that!

  • John__J

I always enjoyed the Le Mistral from Phelps. Haven’t had one since the ’03 I think however and I know the wine maker for it changed since then. Not sure how good or bad of a thing that’s been for the wine, if at all.
I’ve never had the Innisfree before.

  • John__J

Most recent for me would be the Domaine du Bois de Saint Jean “Madame Ust” Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2009. 100% Viognier and there was no mistaking that. Total classic Rhone- rich, full Viognier with a hint of that muskiness I sometimes get on them. That sucker was a big boy though at 15% abv. You did get some heat on the end though and it needed some breathing for that to start to taper (food helped with that as well).

  • the question is if Gv is interested in that πŸ™‚ theworldofvayniacs.blog.com or what πŸ˜€

My bonusson no 2 cooked today. Penne with bacon/chili sauce and I opened a red, I can’t have pasta without a red.
Xavier Cote du Rhone 2009 . The wine was not all that with the food, but later about three hours after opening it, it was just , just, goooood… The wine have a certain CdP style and yes it is 65% Grenache, 20% MourvΓ¨dre, 15% Syrah, 5% Carignan. The grenache nose of blackberry, sweet cherry, sweet licorice is the most evident fragrance. Then there is nice peppery, black currant, black cherry, tobacco leaf, licorice and spice flavor, Initially lush, semi heavy on the tounge with blackberry, sweet cherry, chili and some spice, mid palate is sandy tannins mwith a lot of white and black pepper, back end dry, hints of tobacco and licorice. For me 90 points ( I think Parker said 91) A good wine for 15 bones. I’m a Rhonehead and a sucker for CdP what can I say. WL carry it http://winelibrary.com/wines/57162-2009+Xavier+Cotes+Du+Rhone+750ML

Whether Gary is interested or not, I wonder if a title akin to vayniacs or something specifically vayniac-esque like that in the title would be limiting in a way to the content or avenues that could be explored in the proposed blog.

  • Anonymous

Le Mistral rocks !!! I too have not had that offering for awhile but I do remember (memories) really liking it. Good call πŸ˜‰

No, I have not had the Innisfree but I will seek it out. Thanks Dom.

  • don’t be a pessimist now John. We just got know eachother πŸ™‚

  • John__J

Didn’t mean it that way buddy πŸ™‚
I just wouldn’t want anyone to be put in any kind of box that could put limitations on anything.

  • John__J

I’m right there with you and for that quality to price ratio a high end Rhone will beat a high end Bordeaux virtually every time.

  • John__J

Keeping it simple tonight – Domaine du Salvard blanc 2008. A Cheverny from Loire, so Sauvignon Blanc.
Imported by Kermit, which was enough for me to take the gamble. I don’t remember what the cost was but I’m sure it was under $20, probably a bit under $15.

  • I’m here with you my dear (and you guys) with sabre in hand just in case that special bottle of champagne needs a swift opening! πŸ˜‰

Sitting out on the deck with a glass of Cloudy Bay (not AndersN’s cup of tea?) with some nice goat cheese w/cranberries and then I will grille some lamb chops in a nice mesquite marinade. I will pair that with a Fess Parker Syrah from down Lisa’s way. Santa Barbara and Stanford are close right? πŸ™‚

    Cheers my friends!

P.S. I did not get the chance to check on my blog page today to see if it supports pics, videos etc. I have a couple registered urls we could use if we decide to go that route. I will keep all in touch throughout this process. And yes NWID, you will have your Edit and Like buttons from the get-go. πŸ˜‰

  • Oh yes, I’m right there with you on the CPR of the Cotes du Rhones and my local wine shop is raving about the current releases of CdP. We will all be very happy since I know Lisa loves the nectar of the Popes, well, at least in the early 14th century.

Great review and thank you for the link. “Link it up Mott” oops, you already did that. I just bought 3 bottles of the CdR and threw in 3 bottles of Oyster Bay SB. Where can you buy six bottles of wine and have it shipped to your door for less than 100 bones?

Love the label too of the Xavier. πŸ˜‰
