EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

  • I do like the Daily Grape email notifications when someone replies to a comment. I’ve never been able to set that up here.. Not sure why.. Is it just me?

  • Hi John,
For the past year, I’ve been working long hrs and would rarely get home before 7:30 pm, so I wouldn’t cook much for moi. Lunch being my main meal. My routine was to choose the wine first and eat whatever. Things have lightened up now and I am trying to get back to a 40 hr work week. Weekends are a different story, or if I’m cooking for someone..definitely will pair wine with food or other way around.. Agree with Dominus.

  • Vegas Baby!!!!

You love the Beatles, too? Amazing.

Dom, you would love this show:

For me if I’m doing a dinner with friends, family or at work, I’m always going for the best possible pairing. When it’s just me I almost always don’t worry about the pairing that much. With that being said I’m not going to pop a Barolo if I’m having poached Dover Sole, or a Chablis if I’m having spaghetti and meatballs. I’ve found out about or discovered for myself some of my favorite pairings by NOT trying to worry about the pairing.

Sometimes I’m surprised by how well the food and wine go together. I always enjoy when that happens, as it’s something I probably wouldn’t have decided on if I was entertaining people or doing it at work. When they don’t go well together, I figure out what about it that doesn’t work i.e. too much acidity, not enough body, too earthy, etc. Plenty of times when I recognize what about that wine doesn’t go the best with that particular food and wine pairing, I’m able to come up with ideas for what would pair well with it that I know I never would have thought of.
That’s led me to what I consider to be in my opinion some of the most interesting and unique pairings I’ve done/had.
Of course when you do take risks like that, it can certainly have the opposite effect.

  • John__J

As far as what comes 1st- the wine or the food, I usually pick the wine 1st. But what I already have in my house vs. whether I have to go out and food shop that night can play a factor.

  • 😉

The Venetian Hotel is nice… They actually have gondolas and the guys on them speak with an Italian accent. Rooms are nicer than Bellagio from what I hear (spacious).. The Grand Canal, Venice theme, etc. would probably seem hokey to you when compared to the real thing, but it’s Vegas… An adult Disneyland.

  • No, it’s not you my dear. That is one nice feature over at DG which can be turned off or on.

  • Oh my!!!! I loved this episode of Seinfeld! Go Teri! hahaha!

  • Can’t agree with you more John. I start the evening with a white “quaffer” and then work my way up to the main course and then go “eenie meenie . . .” and wing it. Yes, some exciting pairings have taken place which leads me to a great book I bought quite a few years ago. A great read. http://www.amazon.com/Red-Wine-Fish-Matching-Food/dp/0671662082

  • John__J

Yeah those notifications are nuts. My email box was flooded with them today

  • John__J

Coming from a restaurant I’m right there with you with the long hours and late nights. I’m looking forward to my soon to be switch into distribution so I can try to enjoy a more stable work week and earlier nights as well

  • Ohhhhhhhh on youtube no less.

When I go to youtube I want to see Steve Winwood or listen to Mozart. I will check it out when I get home. Bandwidth issues here at work.

Thanks for “linking me up” Lisa. 😉

  • John__J

I’m replying before I read the full title of your link, but I’m betting it’s Red Wine With Fish. I have that book too. I haven’t read the entire thing, but I’ve been quite happy with what I have read.
Another book you may like that I just got but haven’t read yet is “Daring Parings” by Evan Goldstein, a Master Somm. It’s a follow up to his previous book “Perfect Pairings”.

  • Being a Mozart aficionado, I believe one of them was either “Wulfee” or “Wolfie” yet forgot the other one.

  • I have a neighbor who just visited Vegas a couple weeks ago to write off an item on her “Bucket List” (she has Stage 4 angiosarcoma in her late 40s) and went to see this show. She raved about it.

    Thanks for sending.

  • Where is episode 1001 with Coach Boyer?

  • John__J

I don’t have a chance to check it out yet, but it’s just a condensed version of the show?
I would have no interest in that.
I wouldn’t do that with a movie and I’d never read an abridged version of a book.
The only thing I’d ever consider having that’s condensed is soup.
With that being said, I can see why he’s doing it and I’ll probably check it out just to see it for myself.

  • John__J

ok it’s only a minute long. Just saw it. That’s useful I guess for folks looking for a quick review and have no interest whatsoever in the show.

It does make me wonder if this will effect the un-condensed (real) episodes. Will Gary now try and rip through a wine or two in each or certain episodes and rush it so he can have it fir the format for DG60?
I wouldn’t be crazy about that. I mean we all know how long Gary and sit and ponder which Thunder cats action figure a particular wine smells like 🙂

  • John__J

That’s odd, I’ve always gotten notification to replies over here.

  • Really? Hmmm I guess it’s in my settings. I’ve been told that alot. 🙂

  • Just a random comment but IMHO those Californians can make a great chardonnay. I’m having a glass of the ’09 William Hill right now that just floats my boat.

  • Since he has torn down the wall of not having interviews on DG, it could be over there sometime soon. We have not heard.

  • Same here, maybe I should keep my mouth shut. 😉

  • Yeah John but you worked at one of the nicest establishments in this entire DC area. I always dreamed of owning or working at a restaurant or bistro in the style of a cafe in Vienna, Austria but after watching Gordon Ramsay on Kitchen Nightmares, I’m rethinking that dream.

Ever hear of Savage River Lodge? I actually paid money to be “Chef for a Day.” It was great but I was dragging after one day!!!!

    Bon appetit!

  • John__J

    New updated profile name Lisa?

  • No DG tonight. “Tech issues” Maybe get Mott and run it over here? What a novel idea. 😉

    Cheers!

  • John__J

Those deals are pricey. You could do Chef for a day at my last place and it was $400-$500 a pop. Plus you were up at 4am in order to get to the market down in Jessup to get fresh ingredients in time. But for the acclaim or whatever places like those get, there are the hours and work to match it.
Haven’t heard of Savage River Lodge, worth checking out?

Believe me Dom, I know what I’m walking away from. It was a tough call and I gave it a lot of thought and spoke with friends, family and people in the industry. I’m pretty sure my distribution job won’t land me in Wine & Spirits mag like my current place did :). Got to meet some great people though, met Dr. Ernst Loosen about a 2 weeks ago, we spoke for about 2 hours in the cellar after our wine dinner. I wouldn’t trade that for anything. But ultimately you gotta do what’s right for you and for reasons not to go into in a public blog-this is the best move for me, and I’ll still be dealing with wine everyday. I’m still on awesome terms with the owner and look forward to staying in touch with him, as I have with the other places I’ve been a part of.

I need to fix this. I set up a new acct through Disqus so that I would get email notifications like you do, but Disqus wouldn’t take the same user name or any form of it.. Up until now, I’ve been connecting to Disqus via my yahoo acct/
    Be back later. Sorry. 🙁

PS The good news is that I received an email notification, re your comment!

  • John__J

It’s worth the email notifications Lisa 🙂

  • John__J

Looks like Lisa got her email notifications fixed on here. I replied to your last response on here down below and then it occurred to me that some of you guys don’t get the notifications.
That can be a lot to sift through without them if you’re not on here for a couple days. I was surprised to here that from you and Lisa today, don’t know how you guys did it. Of course as you noted it can be a bit much too, like all the ones we got from DG.

  • Anonymous

NO DG! NO RESPONSE TO MY E-MAIL OF GV’S NOTE TO US ON SUNDAY! NO GOOD NEWS!

    I AM REALLY TIRED! 🙁

  • Anonymous

Once you put a comment on DG and if you respond to a comment, you will receive notifications from those for ever as long as someone keeps commenting on your comments. Bad! 🙁

  • Mott

We really tried for the DG today. The up link from his hotel was sloooooooow and it wasn’t possible. I have this funny expectation of going home at 9:00. 😉

Hope you guys are doing good. I still read all your comments.

  • Mott

    Patience grasshopper. He’ll reply.

  • I can understand that, with all the posting on DG and that edit/like thingy and WLTv, and …. 😉

  • we are alive and kicking. BTW I found your birthday. I’ll give you a SHOUT OUT then.

  • hey, why didn’t they post that when the tech problem came up today(yesterday)?

  • Food first, wine later and I don’t care about the match if I have a craving for a particular style of wine. You can get that sometime, I don’t know why.

  • it’s like the new world. “Do you got a minute?” “yes!”, “Well, you know John..” “Get to the point!!” “What!” “Your minutes up!”

  • I question the validity in a tasting like that, can you even feel anything at that pace?Yes I know he already tasted the wine and is playing it from memory, but would it be a good review if it actually were like the DG60?

Did you really think things would change that much ????? One can hope but I’ve (we’ve) been down this road before and like I said WAY back I’ve scaled back my expectations.
But Hey, I really like the people I’ve meet here so that is a huge silver lining 🙂

  • Anonymous

I want your profile pick … it rocks !!!!!

  • Lisa S

    We like you, too, TP.

  • Anonymous

How dare someone other than you take Lisa S ….. can you buy it back ??? 😉

  • Lisa S

    Hi there, Mottster!

Would you believe that I once worked with a group of 20-something yr-olds who had no clue where the Grasshopper reference came from? Shocking! 🙂

  • Lisa S

You read our comments and you continue to let us post here???? You’re a good egg, Mott.

  • Lisa S

yeah, I don’t know how we did it either! I like email notifications from you all. Still working on the picture though. I uploaded it and if you click on black spot, you’ll see it… A work in progress!

  • Lisa S

Don’t do it, Dom.. If you get email notifications then I’ll expect you to reply to ALL my comments. Just kidding, Dear! 🙂

  • Anonymous
