EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

  • His is truly amazing my lady. I have this “bromance” for him. Here I am playing in this most gorgeous setting (St Albans School where he went as a young boy aka The Washington Cathedral) and we are playing on separate courts next to each other. We glance at each other, and then walk across the courts to each other just to say “hi.” I tell him that amazon just sent me an email that I will be receiving this “gift” in a week or so and I would apprecate it if he bestowed the honor of signing his book. πŸ˜‰

Gosh, it was almost as memorable as looking into a gorgeous brunette’s eyes at Chateau Frontenac over a glass of DP.

  • Lisa S

Aaaww.. Bromance! Good story, D. I like the ending. πŸ™‚
The DC area is full of gorgeous settings.. Everyone who visits (from California at least) always says it is so much better than they expected and so beautiful.

TTF … Looking for a movie recommendation. Any good comedy /action / drama / suspense worth watching ????

What wine will be your highlight this weekend? Going for a Caymus 2008 tonight πŸ˜‰ Totally my cup of tea. Both the 2006 & 2007 were great. It helps that I get the wine at wholesale price πŸ˜‰

  • Lisa S

Hi TP: I just looked online at SF Bay Area movies and there isn’t much. I want to see The Conspirator, but it’s a limited release (a Robert Redford film about Abraham Lincoln)..see if it is playing in your neck of the woods.

So you get Caymus at wholesale price? Why are you special? Just kidding! About 6 months ago I opened the 06 Caymus that my brother had given me.. I sent him an email immediately thanking him for this wonderful cab.. He said, “glad you like it, but why are you drinking it alone on a Monday night? I said, “Why not? “What is your point??” πŸ™‚ Anyway, I am anxious to hear how you like it. I had the 07 at a tasting last yr and it was excellent, too.

Not sure what I am doing or drinking this weekend, but I’ll be sure to post a review if it’s stellar.

    Cheers, buddy.

  • John__J

I don’t watch tv so I see an obscene amount of movies on video.
I can definitely give you some suggestions, but if you narrow down what you’re in the mood for that would help.
I recently saw 25th Hour again. That’s worth watching for sure if you haven’t yet. I’d put that under drama with some suspense I suppose. Stars Edward Norton and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Both some of the best actors of their generation in my opinion.

  • John__J

Let me know how the 08 is and if you think it would be better to let it age a more after you try it

  • John__J

Now you know a man really loves wine when he’s got to have a glass before he can even dry off from a shower.

  • John__J

Yes please post a review if you do Lisa. I’m always on the lookout for another great wine I haven’t tried.

Got your love Dominus over at DG! πŸ˜‰

    Love the Bordeaux choices! πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

    Hahahaha! Yes, he does. πŸ™‚

    Poor baby. πŸ™‚

GV showing lots of Bromance to Dom & John J ….. I even think he taped at the WLTV site just for them …. LOL – As they say down under … Good on ya.

I swear I was looking for the action figures to come out. That would have totally completed the WLTV experience. I predict that the action figures will be out at DG within 30 days πŸ˜‰

I have a few 2000 Bordeaux in my cellar that I’ve been eyeing!!!

  • Anonymous

Be cracking it Sat. These caymus wines put on a lot of weight in the first 3-5 years. Last one I had was about 4 months ago and it needed some more time.

  • Anonymous

Will check out 25th hour. Never hear of it when it was released. Thanks !

  • Anonymous

like the trailer. Woody Allen and Owen Wilson…. HUMM I have to check it out.

Thanks and put your game face on for doubles this weekend. It’s on πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

    Yea, not much out there.

Although anything with Natalie Portman is always visually good !! and I think she has a new movie out πŸ˜‰

  • Yes, very nice though it’s another time I never really complained about it but we will take it nevertheless. The tiff I got into with some jerk was on those lines as he “assumed” something in my comment that I did not mean at all. Anyway, I have let it go (can’t you tell) and we will rejoice in the last episode. πŸ˜‰

Wish the Bordeaux had performed a tad better though given the price but oh well. Can’t have it all.

    Cheers everyone!

P.S. Another “TTF Idea” on DG this Friday?

  • I think you need to hit it up TP unless you have only one. I have been a fan of Reignac for some time and have some ’00s calling my name. I believe I first had it at John_J’s establishment and it is my type of Bordeaux.

  • I shall. Need to kick some butt though afterwards I will be waiting like a groupie at the clubhouse to have David Ignatius sign his new book. πŸ˜‰

P.S. How the Achilles coming along?

  • πŸ™ I know. I need a shoulder to rest my head on.

  • I’ll raise a glass to that!

  • Lisa S

Agree! (for not quite the same reasons as you and TP)! She’s great, which reminds me.. I need to watch Black Swan.

  • In celebration of the previous Bordeaux episode I will crack open an ’05 Reignac and to mourn the passing of Mr. Budge I will open one of his so those are my two for tonight with some grilled Branzino.

  • John__J

    Don’t forget your reviews!

  • John__J

Yeah it was a bit of an indie film, Spike Lee directed it.

  • John__J

I’m thinking it’s just going to get harder and harder for Bordeaux to bring the q.p.r., no matter what the quality.

  • John__J

Very possible, I just sold the last ’00 Reignac a couple days ago. I’m glad you mentioned that, it reminds me I have to update that on our copy of the wine list on our web site.

  • John__J

I won’t be surprised if those figures come out either.
I was surprised to hear my name though because I thought the last wine I’d mentioned in the comments was from Burgundy. Of course last time I got mentioned he said I was in Atlanta. Then again with all the wines I’ve mentioned in the comments maybe it was a Bordeaux, who knows?

  • John__J

wine pairing qotd: What wine pairs best with the Apocalypse?

  • Anonymous

You know I have been wondering about the Reignac. I have seen the 08′ at my store of choice and now I think I will pick up a couple bottles. Thanks Dominus. πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

@ John-I … Still kicking over here πŸ˜‰ and yes the Caymus 2008 Cab paired well with the Apocalypse. Kinda like the Sociando Mallet 1985 paired with Y2K πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

Okay one of them is going down. I may have to play eenie, meenie, miney, moe to see which bottle gets to play with my filet πŸ˜‰

The Reignac sounds yummy. I’m dying to see where some of my wine is now.

  • Anonymous

What’s the price point?? You need to gain possession of that 08 πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

did they pour you a taste ?? πŸ™‚

  • Anonymous

The Caymus 2008 ….. Okay I’d rate it at 93 and an out right gem at this price point. What a joy to drink!!! You gotta like Napa Cabs thou πŸ˜‰
Popped and poured and paired with a 9 oz center cut fillet, garlic mashed potatoes, and a wedge salad. Even my wife who is a non cab drinker (headaches) loved this wine, its approachability, and its richness.

All I can say is that I’m still smiling 2 hours after dinner as I’m enjoying the last 5 oz pour I saved for TTF and this post. πŸ˜‰

Tasting notes: Concentrated & Rich……DARK fresh fruits of Blackberry, Boysenberry, and Plums. The fruit segwayed into a mid palate of dark chocolates and that in turn to a sweet glycerine finish. Again the nose was worth the price of admission…… I’ve got a case of the 09 on order, but will have to find another 6 bottles of the 08 before it leaves the market place. Napa Cab lovers, treat yourself and drink now !!!

I gotta tell you, the regular Caymus is getting closer and closer to the Special Select (maybe better) as the SS normally has too much oak. The extraction level is the only difference between the two and I do respect that.

P.S. 4 hours later the Caymus is getting just a bit softer for you bordeaux lovers πŸ˜‰

TTF ….. Enjoy your Sunday !

They both start with “A” and the red label resembles a fiery ball. Closest I could come to this Sunday morning before spanking someone on the tennis court. πŸ™‚

And actually, it’s a pretty good wine for less than 15 bones.

  • I need to try some Caymus. I will be honest and say I can’t remember if I have had the pleasure? Sad, I know.

  • Lisa S

Yes!!!!! Great review TP!!! Perfect pairing, too!!! So happy that the 08 is great, too… Agree that the Caymus special selection is usually more extracted and oaky.. I’ve liked it, too, but not worth the $$ (for me at least) when the regular Caymus is so good.

Randy Lewis said the same thing about his reserve cabs when he was at K&L tasting in March…usually bigger, more extracted and I think he said it had more oak. I loved his 08 cab as I mentioned before.

The last Caymus I had tasted better the next day and held up on day 3 as well!! It usually takes me 3 days (on the wknds only 2) to drink a bottle of wine, if I am drinking alone (for a few reasons mainly because its not healthy for women to drink more than 2 glasses a day).

    Have you tried Hollis cab?
The O7 was excellent. I’ve not had the 08:

    Hobbs is the consultant winemaker.

Lastly, my friend, you’ll never guess what I saw at Beltramo’s yesterday: Roar 2009 Gary’s Vineyard.. (it’s not on the website yet) $50. I was tempted.

  • Lisa S

Say it isn’t so? How can that be?? We can fix that. πŸ™‚

Yesterday (Saturday) between grocery shopping and car wash, I popped into my local wine shop for a French Rose tasting. There were 9 in the line up. Some were OK, but I must admit I am not a big fan. The only Rose wines that I’ve had in the past and would consider buying again are these: 1. Ampelos “Rose of Syrah” and Etude “Rose of Pinot Noir”.. I’m sure there are other good ones out there. It has to be the right place/time I guess. I do love brut rose as in sparkling wine or Champagne though.

Last night I stir-fried chicken with vegetables and opened a wine that was recommended by fellow Vayniak here on WLTV over a yr ago.. “Albert Mann Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg ’07” A lovely riesling. Sniffy, sniff: Some citrus and pear and hints of minerality. Tasting: There is nothing subtle about this wine. It has benefited from some aging I think… it’s weighty for riesling.. some honey on the palate, green apple, crisp acid with minerals on the finish (Thanks Wayno da wino, wherever you are). 90 pts

Music pairing: “La Vie en Rose” by Edith Piaf.

  • John__J

cool, I’ll have to check that wine out. Good luck on the court. I’m sure you and Tennispro don’t live nearby, otherwise it would seem you’d have another player write here at WL

  • John__J

I’ve had a few. If you like Dominus (I’m going to go out on a limb and say that you do), you’d most likely be into Caymus. When I think back on both those wines ( and it’s been a little while) I seem to remember thinking Caymus seems a little more extracted to me.

  • John__J

While I knew it was all a crock, I was mildly let down as I had ran down to my restaurant’s cellar and was ready to pop a 2000 Petrus on the off chance it happened.
*sighhh* maybe one day I’ll get to try that vintage of it.

  • John__J

awesome review and sounds like a really good buy

  • John__J

I like rose’s and there are good ones for their price points, but I’ve yet to hear of some really fantastic, complex rose. I would love for that to be the case, but it doesn’t look like it.
One rose I would recommend if you haven’t had it is the one from Burgess made from Grenache. They do an excellent red Grenache as well. We did a wine dinner with Steve Burgess and for me their grenache (the red), was the real sleeper hit and had the best q.p.r.

  • John__J

    no, I wish!

  • Sorry for not posting for a couple days. Been to denmark (where were you at Allan!!). I was there on a weekend vacaiton and to bring home my wine. I have some shares in a Bordeaux Chateau. Chateau de Haux. Entre le mers, and not at all hyped. But make good bordeauxs if you let them age 7-10 years. Got home the 2006,2006 and 2007 vintages

  • Very nice review with some delectable food.

I just finished prepping the Branzino, the usual S&P, lemon, dill, EVOO and a sprinkling of thyme. I will now let it “marinate” in the frig for awhile and sit out on the deck with “Bloodmoney,” some nice music and a glass of Cloudy Bay SB. Life isn’t too bad.

P.S. I spanked ’em like a newborn this morning on the tennis court. Back is stiff but hey, I’m old so a valid excuse.

Cheers to the TTF! This is one wonderful community I am a part of and thank you all for it.

  • I really like French rosΓ©s especially from the Provence/Bandol region. The sniffy-sniff is so “feminine” roses, lavender with a spritz of Coco. Kidding on that one but nevertheless, I can get into them on a hot day outside on the deck. I had a Greek rosΓ© that was quite nice. I will find the name and link it back here. 14h or something like that.
