EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

  • No havent had that, but 2006 was a fairly good year so…

  • Anonymous

As well he should! If you’ve got it flaunt it, I always say! πŸ˜‰

Dominus, didn’t you mention something about box wines in the prior episode? I thought you did! Well, there you go! πŸ˜‰

I’m leery of Chianti’s. Can’t say I have had a really spectacular one yet. There’s a Tiefenbrunner Muller Thurgau I’ll be getting to try next week. It’s actually fairly high end. I’m psyched to see what it’s like.

  • John__J

    anytime

  • John__J

I will, but by the time I pop it, we’ll probably be up to 50,000 comments.

  • John__J

I will be saving it, I don’t have many 05 Bordeaux’s (or enough)

  • John__J

True and I rarely splurge on a bottle ever like I said. You’re right, I’ll definitely be laying that one down for a good while.

  • Lisa S

Interesting.. glad I’m not the only one who hasn’t had a great chianti. I do like it with italian food (red sauce-based) and will order it once in a while but haven’t had much. I thought I’d explore them a bit more (along with pinot grigio). Let us know what you think of Muller Thurgau -I’ll have to Google it.

  • John__J

Will do. I’ve had a few from Germany, the NW U.S. and one in a blend in a tiny v.d.q.s. in France north of Alsace and there wasn’t much going on. Apparently it’s a cross between riesling and something they haven’t positively identified. Known for being a varietal suited to cool climates, but wines not really worth bragging about. I have been hearing things about its potential in the Tre Venezie regions of Italy however.

Honestly I think I just want to like this wine because it’s esoteric πŸ™‚ . I’ll let you know

  • Lisa S

Just watched DG. Bota box wine? It sounds too much like Botox.

  • Anonymous

    good one πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

Not sure I’d go for that wine in a bag anymore …. Unless I put the wine in there myself πŸ˜‰

    Petrus in a pouch was a good one John_I … Like !

  • collecting wine is addictive and one can never get enough of certain things. Wine, love and friends come to mind πŸ™‚

Your inner snob is coming out Lisa! Better be careful. πŸ˜‰

  • Lisa S

Really? Well, I certainly didn’t intend to be a snob with that particular comment, so I apologize. It’s just that when I first saw the name of the wine: ” Bota Box” the first word that came to mind was “Botox.” And I would bet my bottle of ’01 Dominus that most women over 35 would say the same thing (umm, no, I’ve not had Botox, at least not yet). However, since I am the lone female in this cute little group, let me put it another way.. What if the wine was named, “Vin Agra” ?? What word would come to mind?? πŸ™‚

Thanks for keeping my inner snob in check, Dan. πŸ˜‰

  • so I ended up alone at home today, hence no three course meal. Instead I made a half pound burger served between to slabs of bread with bacon, cheese, two types od dressing, sallad, onion and tomato and paird it with 1. Sorachi Ace , an ale from Brooklyn Brewing company, 2. Anna de CodornΓu Brut ( a cava) and 3. a 1996 bordeuax red Chateau Haux, I can say that the red wine was the best even thou the beer was summer delish with fragrance of a summer meadow and taste of lemon zest, apricot, honey, and white bread,

  • chianti is good with the italian light cuisine, but I agree, they often dissapoint with other food or just by themselves. Go Brunello de Montalcino for more, haven’t had a bottle yet that let me down ( pricey yes)

  • @NWID: I believe so though I will tell you that was the “subject of conversation” when I took my early sabbatical. πŸ™‚

Also, I’m becoming a little “cynical” shall we say (say it ain’t so) with DG possibly becoming a platform to tout other products? It was surprising to see both manufacturers jump into the comment section to promote their wares after it happened so soon as yesterday with the “Gary Wines.” Is it just me? πŸ˜‰

  • I, too, thought the same thing when I saw the “Bota Box” so I guess we’re both intuitive snobs my dear. πŸ˜‰

  • I’ve actually had that wine since I remember the pink label. I thought it was quite good, not stellar since I can’t give a memorable review of it but don’t give it away. You have to give it a try.

  • Lisa S

Oh yes.. I do remember that unfortunate “conversation” a couple of months ago on DG. I couldn’t believe it (what the heck was he thinking?) but thought that you handled it very well (better than I would have)!! I almost jumped in and said something in your defense. I am just sorry that I didn’t. πŸ™

  • Lisa S

πŸ™‚ Now I feel better. Thanks, dear.

  • Lisa S

Anders: So glad you suggested Brunello! I’ve only had a couple and really liked them. The last one I has was this Carpazo 2005
http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=869880 So the Brunellos are the best of the sangiovese grape from what I can tell?

  • Lisa S

Listening to Norah Jones, “Come away with me” with a glass of Francois Pinon ’07 Vouvray.. Nice.

  • Anonymous

Very nice on both counts! Sec or Demi Sec? Let us in on the notes.

  • Lisa S

Hi Dan, It’s not labeled demi sec or sec, but I think it’s supposed to be demi-sec. I would say it has a bit of sweetness, or it’s “off dry.” The first time I had this wine was at my b-day dinner a few yrs ago at a nice Asian restaurant in San Fran, “The Slanted Door.” Since then I have had it a few times a year. I just looked it up for you on cellartracker and came across Gary’s review of this wine. How did I miss this on WLTV?

  • spring 2010 visting Tuscany and being at Montalcino, the oldest stephson bougt a Carpazo 04 and then we shared it at a dinner we cooked in the flat we had rented in Florence. It was really good. I have 04, 05, 06 and 07 och Castello di Brolio chianti classico tucked away for a vertical tasting sometime. I know that it is not the top of the top, but a solid producer and very popular in Sweden

  • Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads this Sunday

I’m playing tennis tomorrow morning and then going to the Nats game with a possible trip to Baltimore to procure a nice Pomerol. On Sunday, I will have brunch at the Back Porch Cafe http://www.kenscreativekitchen.com/ in Annapolis with my son, the tennis coach.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

    Cheers!

  • John__J

    You too Dom

  • John__J

I’m a sec Vouvray guy usually myself

  • John__J

yeah I noticed the manufacturer’s hopping in there on that one too.

  • John__J

Alright so tonight I will be going with the Kavaklidere winery and seeing how their Okuzgozu d’Elazig is. If you don’t recognize that, I’m in good company because neither did I.
It’s from Turkey! (I’ve never had Turkish wine before so I think that’s awesome.)
And from what I can gather online, Okuzgozu is the grape (and Turkey’s flagship varietal), and it’s from the area of d’Elazig.
Oh and it’s a 2010 vintage for all those curious about which Okuzgozu harvest it’s from πŸ™‚

I have zero expectations on this wine. I’m not even going to consider how this will pair when it comes to deciding what to have for dinner tonight.
For 12 bucks I figure I don’t have much to lose. It’s a varietal I’ve never had, from a country I’ve never had wine from. I’m psyched! Cheers!

Yeah, the Nats! I really wished they would get it together! I am still holding out hope that they will bring respectability back to that franchise. I know they have picked up some nice talent and we can only hope Dom. I wish I was going with you. The Pomerol sounds delectable. I am drinking a 2005 Chateau Divon St. Georges-St. Emilion. Sweeeeet! πŸ˜‰

Enjoy your weekend brother! My daughters 21st birthday is Sunday and we are going to go out to dinner to celebrate both her B-Day and Fathers Day! πŸ™‚

Thanks Sweetie! I loves me some Vouvray and I go Demi-Sec, I just love the dryness a bit more. Vouvrays just knock my socks of and I can just sit there and sniffy sniff them for ever without drinking a drop. I think I might have spied this one at my store of choice. If it is there I will pick it up. πŸ˜‰

Tasting Notes: 2005 Chateau Divon St. Georges-St. Emilion
    $20-25 Bones

This is a very nice serviceable wine, made from 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, a typical Right Bank Bordeaux.

Even though my affection lies with the Left Bank and the heavy Cabernet Sauvignon, this Mare-Lowww based wine is well worth the price point. I am glad I let it sleep for a couple years before popping the cork. I think this is very drinkable now.

At first sight the color is a deep ruby and the aromas a wafting right away that typifies the Bordeaux region. I just love that smell and makes it well worth the experience. The sniffy sniff is of dark red fruits and violet petals crumpled in your hands

On the first sip the fruit is not as forward as I remember Mare-Lowwws to be. I think the Cab Franc and the Cab Sauv keep that in check. Has a nice dryness I like but not over the top on the tannins and Sour Cherrries for miles. It last a good long while on the palate.

    I will score this a nice 89.

Happy Fathers Day to You All!

    Nostrovia!

  • That’s a wine in my scoring wheelhouse. Love the ’89s. Great review, thanks.

And a Happy Father’s Day to you too!

    Cheers!

  • You da man! Go for it! To be honest, I had no clue. Let us know what you think.

  • They’ve won 7 in a row moving Werth to leadoff. I’ll be sitting in the Club section, albeit alone since my bud was invited to go to NY to visit his daughter, chilling with a nice Italian sausage and a glass of their swirl.

    Go Nats!

Have fun my man with your daughters, life is good.

    πŸ™‚

P.S. I hear we may get involved with the Pujols Sweepstakes during the off-season. Werth, Zimmerman, Pujols, Strasburg and Harper. I can feel it!

  • I’m having my TV calibrated so I’m looking at red, green and blue squares. No Mozart or Miles Davis tonight. ;(

  • I just lovvve to sniffy sniff and sometimes I’ll even do it with wines! I try to emulate Al Pacino in the Scent of a Woman.

  • πŸ˜‰ Always (that was a great movie if I recall)

  • Damn, flat in Florence! What a great story and experience. Florence is a magnificent city though a tad loud with all of the mopeds but walking to the top of Brunellschi’s Dome (Duomo) was mind-boggling. And, of course, I can’t forget the first time I gazed upon David at the Accademia. I was truly awestruck. Unfrigginbelievable and excuse my French.

I also took a day excursion to the villa owned by Carlo-Rossi fame where you made pasta from the local market and drank the chianti produced from their vines. Of course, they had many earthenware vats of their olive oil. The Italians know how to live and know what is important in life.

    Enjoy those wines my friend.

    Cin! Cin!
