EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

I may have to find this wine just for the sniffy sniff alone! Excellent review!
Happy Father’s Day, Dan. Enjoy the day with your daughter!

  • Lisa S

The Turks make wine? Who knew? Well, this should be interesting!

  • Lisa S

Sounds like a nice weekend. Your son is a tennis coach? That’s great. I bet you’re a proud Dad. Happy Father’s Day!

  • Lisa S

Excellent. Gary’s review is right on target (Episode 719 on WLTV). Happy weekend, TP!

  • Lisa S

And you could do it. I have no doubt. πŸ˜‰ What a great movie. I need to see it again. I want to learn how to tango!

A little Saturday humor (I just had to share this one):

A woman was sipping on a glass of wine, while sitting on the patio with her husband,
and she says, “I love you so much, I don’t know
how I could ever live without you”
Her husband asks, “Is that you, or the wine talking?”

She replies, “It’s me…talking to the wine.”

Let us know how it is!

Never had Divon either, good review!

The Turkish Okuzgozu from the Kavaklidere winery (2010) could be compared to a wine that was 3 parts Beaulojais Cru and 1 part Zweigelt, with a perhaps a little more earth than some Beau Cru’s.
Young vibrant purple color with magenta on the rim. Had just a hint of that fresh fruity carbonic maceration smell (Not sure if this one went through that or not though). Floral nose, rose petal for sure going with that fruitiness. Cranberry, grape, maybe a little plum on the palate with an old world earthiness to it. Pretty juicy with real good acid, mild tannins.

I had expected this to be drinkable at best, so I was surprised how it was quite a pleasant quaffer. For 12 bucks, it’s an easy drinking, no deep thought required wine. When you throw in how nerdy it is, I’m probably going to pick up one more to bring next time I’m with some wine geeks.

I had half the bottle leftover and brought it to a very informal gathering yesterday. While I was pouring some in a glass, my buddy walked by and could smell the wine as I poured it. He inquired if it was Beaujolais Cru. I was pretty impressed, he’s not really a wine guy.

I’m one of those guys who isn’t crazy about scoring either. There’s so many variables and like anyone else I know people who would definitely rate this wine higher and lower than me. That being said, if I had to rate it, I’d go maybe 84-85.

solid post John_I !!!! Love it. Will have to seek out a beaujolais ….. have not had one in over 5 years. Any other recommendations? πŸ˜‰

Quite proud of him but mostly for being such a “good kid” though he’s 6’6″!

  • He arrived at 730pm and left at midnight! I quaffed anyway. πŸ™‚

  • It was a great one.

Hey tennispro, can you do me a favor? Can you give your avatar a picture? I don’t care what it is, make it a tennis racket. It’ll make my life easier when I scan the admin for spammers. I know everyone’s avatar and it just will make scanning it easier for me. Thanks appreciate it.

    Mott

  • Had a glas of McManis Petite Sirah 2009 today. Charcoal and roasted oak dominant on the nose. Traces of plum, blackberry and sweet cherry maremalade and a tiny hint of sweet licorice too. The taste sweet and jammy with a smokey note. Dry yet still sweet on the mid palate and a little more red jammy fruit. Back end even more dry wood with some strawberry and pencil shaving. Oakmonster or smokemonster is the question? I occasionally like fruitbombs, which this usually are/is but this was a tad to much of , well smoke, charcoal..84-85 p today. Maybe more another day and another palate πŸ™‚

  • John__J

That’s the 1st post I think I’ve seen under the WLTV moniker.

    Hey Mott!

  • John__J

I think I probably do score lower than most compared to average. I’ve noticed that before with other people. But who knows, everyone is different.
That being said I’d rather underscore something and have it turn out better for someone I recommend a wine to than the other way around.

  • John__J

I may be reading this wrong, but you do know I wasn’t talking about a Beaujolais, right?

That being said, yes I do! I tried some awesome things today, both unique.

1st: I had a St. Laurent from Austria made by Zantho. It’s a member of the pinot noir family, and smelled as such. Light, good acid, cherry fruit, real spice on the back end, a little earth, but less than your typical french pinot. A real solid buy. If you cross St. Laurent with Blaufrankish, you get the better known Austrian red, Zweigelt.

2nd: Now this wine came as a total surprise. I put in for a sample bottle of a Valpolicella today and got this oddball instead. (I had so many samples to pull I wasn’t as thorough when I checked them.) It was from the Gragnano della Peniscola Sorrentina D.O.C. in Campania, Southern Italy. The winery was Cantina Grotta del Sole and it was made from Aglianico, Piedirosso, and Sciasinasso. It’s light, real fruity, juicy, good acid and frizzante. Think Beaujolais nouveau but a lot better and without all the bubblegum, banana, dirty earth and what not, but with some foaming/sparkling to it. It’s not complex, but perfect for summer. I didn’t serve it chilled, but I bet it would be good that way too. I read that they pair it with pizza in Italy.

But while we’re talking Beaujolais, if you’re ever going to buy Beaujolais Cru’s I recommend getting the ’09’s while you still can. It’s supposed to be the best vintage Beaujolais has ever seen. Wine Advocate gave the region 97 points for the 09 vintage.

  • John__J

I had that wine a few vintages ago and wasn’t bowled over by it. I have heard a lot of good things about that wine from people though and have wanted to give it another shot. I’m glad you put up your review.

  • Lisa S

Yeah, come on, tennispro! Don’t be shy. πŸ™‚

  • Their Viognier is pretty good. Nice review, thanks, though but I’ll take a major pazz. Needs to 88-89 range. πŸ™‚

P.S. Did you bring up the movie “Taxidermia” over at DG? If so, I watched after the Nats game on Saturday and it wasn’t as gross as purported. Just “out there” for sure.

  • Lisa S

Thanks, Anders.. I’ve also heard about this wine from a friend who LOVES petite sirah. It’s her favorite “go-to” $10 bottle of red wine. I’ve been meaning to try it for a few yrs.. http://www.bevmo.com/Shop/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=18681

I am afraid to ask what you paid for it.

  • Near the end of tonight’s show, another lighting bolt hit me of the commercialization of DG. Yes, it could be me but does anyone think a half bottle of Krug miraculously appeared via the kindness of Bar Henry for the VIG who comes in and gives his name? So who will spend hundreds of dollars to go to NY to pick up a half bottle of Krug?

Now, if the offer was to fly 1st class to have a glass of Sea Smoke with Lisa, then I’m there in a heartbeat! πŸ˜‰

    Cheers fellow Vayniacs!

  • Lisa S

That’s your son????? He’s so handsome!!!!!!! And he’s a good kid, too? You are very lucky!!!!

Well.. the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
    Thanks for sharing, Dom.

  • My man. Yeah, tennispro, get with it! Mott has spoken! πŸ˜‰

P.S. Maybe a pick of Bjorn?

  • He had one the other day. I like his other one.

  • I need to find some Tasmanian bubbles. I hear they are great and have yet to hear anyone “personally” try them.

  • Just in that mood tonight. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWptXUblA4E

I taught him that move at 1:32-1:34

  • John__J

Let me know if you do. I just bought a Tasmanian pinot. Haven’t tried it yet though.

  • John__J

I notice that too, not sure how to take it. Free stuff is nice, but when there seems to be an agenda behind it…
Just like it’s great the show is free. Not sure how I feel about the newsletter, that you have to pay for it. I can see reasons for and against it. Same goes for only giving certain giveaways like today’s which is only for those members who pay for it. Not sure I really want to think about it. Either you justify the reasons for it and you’re right back where you were before you thought about it. Or it bothers you and the show doesn’t mean as much to you. Not something I want to let myself mull over right now I guess.

  • Lisa S

πŸ˜‰ First class? Really? It has to be first class… Hmmm… You mean you wouldn’t fly coach for moi?

It’s OK, dear… I refuse to fly coach on any flight over 4 hrs. πŸ˜‰

  • John__J

On a bit of a lighter note, Lisa’s Saturday wine humor reminded of a great wine story I wish had happened to me. I read it in a wine article about 2 years ago in Baltimore mag where some people in the industry were interviewed.
We all know I’m sure how useless it is to smell the cork when it’s presented to you when ordering wine at a restaurant. (Something I would still see almost every night however when I was popping bottles for folks.)

Anyway in the article this wine steward was saying how a young gentleman was what appeared to be on a first date and was clearly trying to impress the lady he was with. The wine steward could tell that he was probably pretty new to the world of wine as well. After ordering the wine, the somm presented the bottle, opened it and laid the cork on the table beside the young gentleman. The guy clearly not knowing what to do, but trying to impress the girl, picked up the cork looked at the side that had been touching the wine and gave it a quick lick. It apparently met his approval as he then quickly gave the nod to the somm to pour them the wine. I’m sure the somm was just choking back tears of laughter.

  • John__J

    nice avatar

  • John__J

    lol that figures

  • John__J

It occurs to me now that not only would it have been fitting to have turkey with this wine, it probably would have paired really well too.

The WLTV account is what I use to admin the comments. I was too lazy to logout and use my other account. Thanks tennispro! You made my life a little easier.

  • I fly coach

  • Don’t be. 15 bones I can live with that.

  • I can get hold of these in Sweden
    Egeo Syrah
    Kavaklidere Selection
    Γ‡ankaya
    Yakut
    LΓ’l
All seem to be from Kavaklidere winery Should I try one?

  • John__J

Mine said Yakut at the top, but also said Kavaklidere with the okuzgozu varietal on the label too.
It would be neat if you got the same wine I did and posted your on review. I’d be curious to see what you think. If it was me, I’d at least seek out any of those wines that were made from varietals I’d never had.
