EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

2008 Jerome Prevost La Closerie Les Beguines BrutFrench Brut Vintage

How was it drinking age-wise? Did it seem like it still could’ve been laid done for a good while more?
I’m sitting on some ’07’s but I’ve been waiting to pop them.

  • John__J

Awesome, love Rockfish. There’s supposed to be a lot of crabs this year too…

  • John__J

Rockfish is in the bass family. White fish, firm but flaky I’d say a touch of earthiness to it -Pinot or Blaufrankish!

  • John__J

Sounds great, did you pair it with food? Or would it be too overpowering you think?

  • Lisa S

Hey Stranger, welcome back!! This was ready to drink, but it was not very complex to begin with. I have a few more 07 CdPs (higher end bottles). I may open 1 or 2 this year and hold the rest..

  • John__J

    Thanks!
Agreed I’m planning on doing the same with mine

  • Lisa S

Speaking of 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape, I tasted about 5 of them today at a shop in Palo Alto that specializes in French wine. Anders would have loved this!! The lineup: 1. Roger Perrin -Vielles Vignes 2. Le Vieux Donjon 3. Domaine Cristia 4 Vieux Telegraphe “La Crau” 5. Chateau Beaucastel. They had the Caillou and Pegau available as well, but I’ve had them before. My favorite was the Beaucastel – hands down. The Vieu Telegraphe was my 2nd favorite… different styles though. Beaucastel was fruit forward, floral, refined and elegant.. The VT was stewed fruit and complex.

Anyway the consensus was that they are drinkable and tasty but will continue to evolve for several more years.

I almost bought the 07 Beaucastel.. I think it just might be worth $100 a bottle.

  • And you did not call me?
5 07 , now I’m really jelous. Good to hear that the vintage seem to have another year or two to go.
The 3 first I have in my collection. The latter two have eluded me due to availability and price. But I’ll will try to find some when actually going to CdP i June. I’m taking my old motorhome for a long trip and staying 2 weeks in the Avignon vincinty. Saving all I can to afford to complete my collection of Cdp 07
Beaucastel with its Grenache only style sounds delish 🙂

  • Tried the whiskey treatment but It got worse 🙂

  • I wont

  • johnfarrin

Just so you could impress me when you showed up at the castle with it, right? 😉

  • johnfarrin

And while I’m here I’ll weigh in on the Resurrection! I’m still feeling like the rejected lover and think that we will need some serious couple’s counseling for me to let him back in the house. I didn’t appreciate him walking in the house one day, packing his bags and announcing that he’d found someone new who he loved a lot more. He didn’t even want visitation rights. He wanted to concentrate on his NEW family. 😉

  • Lisa S

🙂 Umm.. So how big is your motor home? Now I am really jealous!! The wine shop guy and others said this vintage could easily hold up for 10 or more yrs. The 09s are getting great reviews too. Another favorite from past tasting was the Caillou. 🙂

  • Are we talking beer or?

  • Sleeps 4 but it is small.
I can’t afford to start collecting 09, iut wull ruin me. But I’ll buy a bottle to try, of course.
10 years huh!. I think I’ll sell half the stock within 2 years and then drink the rest. It’s plan I like.

  • I also Invented the idea you came up with ; )

  • johnfarrin

    🙂 GV’s

  • but did you patent it? 😀

  • cellarrat5

    Niieeeeeeeeeeeeeceee!!

  • cellarrat5

Strange, but apt in a weird way.

  • Discovering on FB athet Gary is in sweden is a bit of a bummer. I wish he annonced that earlier so I could harass him for a wineshow in person 🙂 But instead i throw myself a wine tasting.

Chateau de Haux Blanc Reserve de propritaire 2011, Bordeaux
Lovely aromo of starfruit and white flowers with a little white. Taste fresh, with a little more tropical fruit, much more pepper and lovely acidity.

Best’s Great Westen Riesling 2010, Vic, Australia
Benzene, smoke, chalk and a little peach is the scent.
The flavor carries on with a powdery, chalky note and some white flowers and a little acid. Very strange wine. Could it go with crayfish?

Chateau de Haux Rouge, Reserve de propritaire 2010, Bordeaux
Smells a lot of caramel, vanilla, barrel and red berries. The taste is incredibly dry, and of slightly sour cherries, wild raspberries, but most of all monster tannins , like sandpaper across the entire palate. This is way to young to drink. One can only hope it will evolve during the next 10-15 years ?

Elderton Friends Shiraz 2010, Barossa, Australia
a bit of easy jammy aromas of raspberries, currants, cherries and cranberries. There is some smoke a little bacon and oak as well. The taste dry with high but nice acidity. Rerd berries and a LOT of black and chili pepper. Velvety tannins and a slight residual sweetness of red fruits. I think this will drink well with a creamy pasta with some cheese and bread 🙂

  • NWIndianaDan

Nice Anders! The two Bordeaux are right in my wheelhouse and not so much on the two Australians. I still haven’t come to liking the Syrah/Shiraz.

    Nostrovia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😉

  • If ever in this part of the world I’ll treat you to 2003-2010 vertical of the red Bordeaux ones 🙂

  • Lisa S

Happy Birthday to our friend, NWIndianaDan!
How will you celebrate? What will you be drinking tonight?
    Cheers!

  • A Pinot for you, a Rhone for me, a Bordeaux for himself? 🙂

  • Lisa S

A white bordeaux! I can’t remember the last time I had one. Nice reviews! The 2010 Bordeaux sounds painful. 🙂

  • Lisa S

Yeah, that works for me. 🙂

  • Actually this particular Chateau ( the one I own shares in) makes really good whites Sauv B and Sem blends. I’ll treat you to a bottle when you come to Sweden 🙂 and then a real surprise type of wine from the same estate.

  • cellarrat5

Might not work out so well for him if he drinks them all himself.

  • Yes, a huge birthday celebration for our man!

    Cheers!

  • I know the feeling and can still show you the scars. 😉

P.S. The King said this a week ago? Gosh, I’ve been away too long. 🙁

  • Whiskey kills me, even if I’m well.

  • Here’s a white Bordeaux I am quaffing at this very minute. Quite nice and a great QPR for a rainy Monday evening.

    Cheers!

  • Talking about Australia Shiraz make me ponder the question: When should I open my bottle of ’95 Grange? I’m trying to find an excuse. I’m guessing it is ready?

One of the few “wine friends” I have (who knows what Grange is) will be out of town during my annual Marty Party for a friend who comes to DC every year.

  • Lisa S

I say drink it now (life is short)! 🙂 I just looked it up on WSpect online: 97 points -reviewed in Dec 2000 issue:
“A massive wine, majestic in its proportions, combining power and grace in equal measure. Flavors of plum, blackberry, chocolate and pepper, with hints of cedar, licorice and mint, swirl through the exotic finish. Tannins swarm but don’t overwhelm the finish, which echoes all day and night. Best from 2004 through 2020. 9,800 cases made.”

Sounds like an awesome wine. Just be sure to post your review for us! Cheers!

  • It’s ready but can keep another 3-5 years in the bottle too. Godd record on cellartracker. http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=2978
I wish I had tasted one, have to save up to buy one day, it is a rhone aussie 🙂

  • Maybe a few of the Vayniacs will come to DC before 2020 and I’ll open it then?

  • I will be there one day. Hopefully soon.

I hear there are many RIFs coming soon to our org so I may have alot of time on my hands and what better way to spend it than with good friend(s) and good wine in a far away land.

  • I hear GV will have a business offspring in your neck of the woods . . . SF . . . so if you guys can’t get him to a Vayniac wine dinner to celebrate the momentous occasion, well, you lose.

My feelings will be hurt if I’m not invited.

  • I know you like Rhones, what about this one? First time I’ve been to The Lib in months and I was ordering wine almost daily.

BTW, where is da Mottster? I miss him. ;(

  • johnfarrin

Is he opening a West Coast branch of Vaynermedia?

As far as being invited to any of our pairing dinners, consider this to be your standing open invitation. If you ever find yourself in SF we will have one at my place in your honor!

  • Lisa S

    Ditto.. what Kingy said. 🙂

  • Lisa S

Do you think our livers will still be intact around 2020? 😀

  • johnfarrin

Easy for you to say 😉

  • Brune and Blonde , yum, would like to dive into that. Maybe I’ll find one in France. I searched in Sweden and there is 3 bottles of the 06 available at $49 but they are all in different cities and my travels are now limitied due to car repairs 🙂

  • That is a comment I can relate to. Cheers Dom. I have to plan a trip to the NY and DC area some day 🙂

  • I’m assuming you drive a Saab or Volvo? I thought they never needed repair? 😉

  • You are right. We need to open this bad boy soon. 😉

  • Lisa S

I am off to the Mendocino Coast this Sunday and Monday. Will stop along the way in Anderson Valley and check out some wineries: Goldeneye, Handley, Navarro, and maybe Black Kite. I’ll miss the Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival on Saturday, but hope to make up for it while visiting some wineries on Sunday. Love the Mendocino Coast! Most beautiful spot in CA (after Carmel/Monterey). Will report back next week. 🙂

  • Lisa S

I am drinking a cotes du rhone right now that’s pretty good.. Could use some age (glad i have a couple of more bottles): J.L Chave 2009 Mon Coeur. 🙂
