EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

  • Sounds wonderful and yes it is a beautiful coastal region. Don’t forget the beers too Russian River and Firt Bragg breweries are good πŸ™‚

  • J.L Chave! 09 is a good vintage too , 08 is the only available here, so far. Good stuff πŸ™‚

  • No I can’t afford luxury cars πŸ™‚ A normal Volvo is 40 000 dollar here.
I spend my money on travels and wine.
I drive a 12 year old Mitsubishi and a 24 year old motorhome, hence the repairs

  • Yep in SF

  • zwillingswelten

I drive a Volvo and it doesn’t need any big repairs.
Wine and alcoholic drinks are much more expensive in Scandinavia but Sweden is not as expensive as Norway.

  • Var i Norge bor du?

  • I bought myself this today

  • johnfarrin

And you already know that applies to you (the open invitation)!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • cellarrat5

St. Amant and the rest of Lodi getting ready for Zinfest this weekend, should be interesting at the very least. fortunatley it is not going to be 108 degrees like it was a few years ago. Prost!!

  • Oh yeah, I’ll try to come back as soon as possible so we can taste wine and talk about life to our hearts content

  • NWIndianaDan

    Helloooooooooooo Everyone!

Just had a real nice white wine from the Loire Valley and had to share it with you.

2010 Frances Blanchet, Pouilly-Fume’ Vielles Vignes, Le Bouchot, Pouilly-Sur-Loire
    100% Sauvignon Blanc

    That’s a mouth full!

    The Color; A nice Straw

The Aroma; I enjoyed Grapefruit, Orange Peel, Peach Fuzz, with hints of Butterscotch Candy and Rubber Bands.

The Taste; I definitely got Young Peaches, Mandarin Oranges, with slight taste of Grapefruit. I had wet pebbles and a good minerality and soil on the backend.

The Pairing;I just had this a couple weeks ago and it could be a better pairing. CHILEAN SEA BASS with Miso Glaze & Bok Choy Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Scoring; 90+ I really liked this wine and I really like the Loire Valley

I am currently trying a White Bordeaux – 2010 Chateau Haut Peyruguet 50% Sauvignon Blanc 25% Semillon 25% Muscadelle from the Entre-Deux-Mers Region of Bordeaux. I will report on this one soon.

    Nostrovia!

  • Lisa S

Judging from reviews on cellar tracker, the wine was as good in 08. They sell out around here. I think I may need to try more CdR from this JL Chave dude. Thx πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

The brunello looks good and from a good producer. I’ll need to investigate the other two! Nice labels.

  • NWIndianaDan

Thank you Lisa! You are still the BEST! I had a Pinot for you, 2009 Joseph Swan. I hope you are having a great time on the Mendocino Coast. Sounds like some good wineries to be checking on. Wish I was with you! πŸ˜‰

  • NWIndianaDan

Thanks Dom! I still trying to get to the VA Beach area and if I do would like to try and get together.

  • NWIndianaDan

You got that right! πŸ˜‰ Thanks Anders!

  • Greg B.

I so do miss my //! Even if you could do one once a month. lol

  • Second that.

  • cellarrat5

I’m still alive, had an impromptu 5 person birthday party after a whole day of “professional research” at Zinfest; it was kind of rough, but we could not let my friends birthday go uncelebrated!!

  • cellarrat5

Yet another Zinfest in the bag, I think I have been involved with all of them. This getting older thing is not cool at all. Dislike.

  • why, is harder to Zinfest properly or ? πŸ˜‰

  • Todays wine: Domaine de Cassillac CΓ΄tes-du-RhΓ΄ne Villages Visan 2009
    75% grenache, 20% syrah, 5% mourvedre.

Deep garnet color. Only 20% but I get the syrah characteristcs of some game, earth, cranberry and herbs on the nose. On the palate there is more of a mix of the big and fruity aroma of red berries and herbs from the Grenache and the acid feel of the syrah. Being 09 , a good vintage it is still fairly smooth and soft but still have nice spicy elements and hints of berries and herbs. Medium long finish with black pepper as dominat ending. Het what do you expect from $13.? Nice dinner wine this day.

  • Never been to the Mendocino Coast but have heard great things about it. Carmel/Monterey . . . it doesn’t get much better than that. I have been there a few times and each time it is magical. I like to drive along the coast to gawk at those “shantys” in Pacific Grove. Wow

Have fun my dear. The Dom is not doing too much other than tennis and a friend’s house on Sunday for a cookout. I bring the wine and bruschetta. πŸ˜‰

  • Nice

I’m partaking of a cheapo bottle of Grenache on a Thursday night. Goes well with my grilled baby back ribs.

  • Not a Zin man myself though they are getting better. I do like the Haywood Los Chomizal and some of the Ridges.

Have a fun fun time in the sweltering heat! Yikes!

  • Lisa S

Goldeneye Winery, Anderson Valley, CA This is the view from the outdoor patio where you can sit back and sip some really nice pinot noir. πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

Anderson Valley and Mendocino were great! The wineries had catered food, BBQ, music and poured more wine than usual.. (in celebration of the Pinot Festival the day before, which I missed). No charge for tastings, except for Goldeneye, which charged $10 but worth every penny. I visited the following wineries, in addition to Goldeneye: “Drew” – excellent pinots. Jason Drew is a nice guy and knows his wines.. really liked his 2010 Fogeater blend and Morning Dew pinot. “Phillips Hill” really good pinot, especially 09 Toulouse pinot.. definitely the most burgundian in style. “Toulouse” – A great place, lots of fun and some good wines. On the way back home, I visited “Handley” – good chardonnay, pinot gris, gewurz, and pinot, and, lastly, Navarro..Good value pinots. They have a nice chardonnay.. Gewurz is their signature wine. I must say that I was impressed at how friendly they were at the wineries. How refreshing. Fun trip but the drive is really something. Now I know why I don’t visit more often..Could be fun if you have a cute, sporty car, which I do not. It’s a 3-hr drive to Mendocino from Golden Gate bridge.. ( 2 hrs to Anderson Valley) and 65 miles of long and winding road! Most curvy road ever (next to Lombard Street in SF) Mendocino is on the edge of the Pacific Ocean just south of Fort Bragg. Special place. Fun times. Cheers!

  • Lisa S

Thx Dom. You do the same. Have a great weekend!!

  • By the look of the photos on FB and uour post here it sounds like you had a good time. The winding roads were great to me due to the fact that then you had to take is low and then being able to actually see more πŸ™‚
If there ever is a next time for me I’ll be spending more days slowly meandering πŸ™‚ up and down those coastal and vineyard roads.

  • Wow, it seems to me to be a view of “heaven.”

Does “Goldeneye” winery have any ties to Ian Fleming and James Bond? “Skane, not stirred.”

  • Now Lisa, I expected you to be tooling around in a Boxster or an Audi TT. No?

Sounds like you had a great time. I’m jealous. For me, I’ll be playing some tennis this weekend and then going to a friend’s cookout at their new home. It is supposed to be in the 90s and she has a pool so may even take a dip.

I’m bringing bruschetta based on a Michael Chiarello recipe along with some summer-themed beer and a Merry Edwards SB for quaffing with the apps and an Argentinean Malbec (below) with grilled fare.

I’ve heard the Merry Edwards pinots are world-renowned but have not had the opportunity to try them so I’ll try her SB.

    Happy Memorial Day everyone!

    Cheers

  • Lisa S

You would think so, wouldn’t you? Love James Bond. Much sexier than ducks. So Goldeneye is part of the Duckhorn family of wines.. All of their labels are duck-related: Goldeneye, Decoy, Parraduxx, Migration. πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

What a coincidence, Dom. I have the exact same bottle of Merry Edwards SB (bought it from WL last winter). I do like her SB. I had an 06 Russian River pinot noir a couple of years ago and really liked it, but recently bought the 08 Sonoma pinot on WL and thought it was good, but definitely not great: https://winelibrary.com/wines/63199-08-merry-edwards-sonoma-pinot-noir.

Sounds like a lovely weekend with good food, wine, tennis and friends. Enjoy!

  • You have entered the “Twilight Zone.” πŸ˜‰

So cool. It should be a nice bottle. Interesting, my friend who is having the cookout is a “Chardonnay only” type of gal and her name is, get this, Mary Edwards. Mary is spelled differently but it has a nude woman on the front so it will be a nice “house-warming” gift for her and her husband.

Actually, I will buy them a “real” house-warming gift but thought this would get the party started.

These Merry Edwards wines aren’t cheap! πŸ˜‰

Their pinot is next on my agenda.

    Cheers!

  • Congratulations to the Devils for eliminating the dreaded Rangers and now they are off to the Stanley Cup Finals! I’m sure Sasha and GV (and any other Wine Lib Devil fans) are dancing in the streets and raising a nice glass of Petit Verdot.

I’m guessing Mott is a Ranger fan being a Giants fan. Hope not. πŸ˜‰

    Go Devils!

P.S. I remember watching one of the Devils games, I think it was vs the Panthers and Brodeur was absolutely horrible. I was surprised they got out of the first round. Amazing comeback. Kudos

  • Lisa S

Love it! I hope Mary appreciates Merry! I suspect that her husband will appreciate the nude girl on the label. πŸ™‚

  • I’ll you all have a good Holiday. This Monday I treated myself to some wine to dinner.

    Principesco Brunello di Montalcino 2006
A supermarket brand I found in Copenhagen. Only 18 dollars for a Brunello 06, so I had to buy it.
Color red bordering on brick, semi see through. That seems a bit light to me.
Scent is a lot of earth, oak and even pine sap with red berries beneath. On the palate its dry, earthy and have a light feel, not even medium bodied. Some raspberry, sweet cherry. Tannins of dry sandy character, a tiny bit of white pepper. Back end more dry earth mixed with red berries. Light medium long finish.

  • I filmed a “laid-back” video over the weekend to say “Thank You” to Gary V and to some of the Vayniacs; and to try and open people’s eyes about Cru Beaujolais.

  • cellarrat5

Glad you had a good time! I really need to visit that area again, beautiful coastline!

  • She did! Everyone loved it. Fun time though I wrenched my back after a tennis match, thank goodness we won, and was taking drugs and drinking Merry Edwards. Needless to say, I crawled out of there.

  • Ahhhh neat. As for James Bond, I’m a geek for him. I travelled to Paris and had to have dinner at Jules Verne in the Eiffel Tower to try and recreate the butterfly scene from “A View to a Kill.”

Yes, Tanya Roberts decline my invite. ;(

  • Have a nice weekend folks. I treated myself good today.

I actually have started my vacation, and in Sweden we often have 4 weeks of that, but somehow I must work next week anyway. I don?t mind and just to celebrate that June have come and summer might be here any moment I dig deep in my wine stash and open up Chateau Hosanna 2003.

It?s a wine from Pomerol 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.
Color is of a really dark dense bluered.
On the nose blueberry, blackberry, black currant plum, mushroom, licorice and subtle spices.
This is a full bodied wine on the palate, a nice mouth feel with loads of ripe fruit and velvety tannins. First off you find blue fruit mixed with raisins and toasted oak, then the mid palate is filled with velvety tannins with a hint of white and black pepper and more darks fruit. The back end is like a warm summers day at the beach, dry sand, dry grass and then some blackberry jam mixed in and all that topped with really dry dark chocolate powder. Nice balance finish, will probably hold for 5-7 years more without problem. Lovely wine. I bought this last fall for 130 dollars, but it looks like it that you can get in other countries for between 76!! and 175.

  • Hello everyone. πŸ™‚

Randall prodded me to try a Roussanne so I picked up a 2009 Anne Pichon Roussanne. It was about 15.99 if I remember. It was very good and enjoyable. It was on Wine Library here but it’s sold out: https://winelibrary.com/wines/62961-09-anne-pichon-roussanne

  • Lisa S

Nice, Anders! You are starting your vacation with a bang! You probably know that this is one of Christian Moueix’s wines (along with Certain de May from Pomerol and Dominus in Napa, etc.) He served the 2004 Hosanna last yr at Dominus wine dinner in SF. I think 04 was a tough year for bordeaux though. Wish I could remember if I liked it. πŸ™‚

  • 03 was also a strange vintage, it’s called the hot vintage due to an extreme hot summer. I think i showed in the warmth of the wine. On tuesday I think I’ll dig up something else πŸ™‚

  • Still not gone over to try the reds πŸ™‚

  • My trip to France seems to be postponed a few days. My motorhome have not recovered from an operation. So I guess I have to drink some wine at home instead. To the oven baked salmon with chili and mango crust served with tomato pasta I chilled Adegas Gran Vinum Nessa AlbariΓ±o 2010. Pale golden yellow color, scent of lemon, white melon, pear and a hint of herbs. Dry taste with intitial herbal and white flowwer flavour, than lemon, white hot pepper, more white fruit and a good vicosity coating the palate and revealing a boit of pear, mandarin orange and lemon zest. A slightly bitter end, sort of stem tartness making this not super duper, but good enough. Got it for 13 euro in from a wine club, I think it’s 17 dollars in the US and 89-90 p wine. I’ll say 87-88 πŸ™‚ Cheers to all friends over there and around the globe.
Tonight on to another wine …

  • cellarrat5

I love me some white wines, but you really should come over to the darker side sometime soon!

  • I bought a couple whites tonight that you may like my dear. Here’s one of them. This will be a “first” for me so don’t slam me if it’s bad. πŸ˜‰

    http://www.wine.com/V6/Nicolas-Ulacia-e-Hijos-Txakolina-2008/wine/100868/detail.aspx

I also bought a Jermann Pinot Grigio for which I can attest is stellar.

    Cheers!

  • Looks like the Kings will be hoisting the Cup. Maybe
