Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

  • What is the best wine for a bad back? I messed something up a couple weeks ago playing a match late at night (thankfully I won 6-1, 6-0 though played a meaningless 3rd set and won 6-0) and need some quick rehab. I’ve gone to my PT which has helped but wondered if there was a particular wine to ease my pain.

Go Novak at the French but seriously doubt anyone has a chance vs Rafa.

  • Lisa S

Chili and mango crust on salmon sounds interesting! Not much of an Albarino fan, but good review as always. Do you like white burg or sancerre? Just curious. Hurry up and get motor home running. I want to hear all about your French adventure, especially Southern Rhone. And don’t forget to pick up some good chocolate. πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

I’m intrigued by the Jermann pinot grigio.. I’ve never had a stellar pinot grigio. Will seek it out. Feel better soon. Heat wrap (or ice) should help, too. πŸ™‚

  • I’ll go high alcohol content, why not a Priorat wine, big bold and deep πŸ™‚

  • I’ve had a couple of really good white burgs and sancerres and yes I like them. Still gotta try more whites to learn more.
Forget chocolate, what, are you crazy πŸ˜‰

  • Thursday’s wine a true Bordeaux Clairet. Chateau De Haux 2011. Deep strawberry red with the fragrance of strawberry punch, hay, summer sun and white pepper. The flavors are strawberry and raspberry up front followed by a nice acidity with white peppers, dried strawberries and herbs. very structured. The back end gives you a nice thick feeling of a full bodied red wine and the nice refreshing feel of white acidic wine. The aroma of the wine jumps up into your nose from your throat and gives that summer feel yet again of fresh strawberries. Yes, it’s a lot of strawberries πŸ™‚ This served cold went very well with the crab, shrimps and white fish sandwich I served as well with the ham, roast beef, potato salad, dried onion sandwich that followed.
    It’s summer Cheers.

  • NWIndianaDan

Yes of course what really matters is that you won. Huh! Sorry to hear your back is giving you trouble. Hopefully it heals soon. Take care and that Priorat Anders suggests sounds de-lish.

    Nostrovia!

  • NWIndianaDan

MelbaLI, I just had a Marsanne, Rousanne just this past weekend and it was really good. I was surprised and delighted!

    Nostrovia!

  • could we have a name dropping incident? French, American, Australian?? everyone talking about Marsanne Rousanne makes me ache for a Hermitage Blanc πŸ™‚

  • Friday night wine. Joseph Drouhin Vosne-RomanΓ©e 2006
I bought in 08 for 42 dollars and before I seroiusly started to buy at least 2 bottles of every wine.
As with many wines I opened this one to early. The winemaker says cellar 8-30? years.
Typical pinot see through ruby red. Earthy strawberry and chalky peppers on the nose. I also smell mustard seeds deep down. Taste is dry as a bone, chalky, full of peppery sandy tannins . Pure strawbeerry flavours get mixed with nice acid cherry, hints of nutmeg, leather and dried hay. Long dry finish with streaks of mushroom and more strong pepper. There is more lush to come behind this dry external face. Opened it to soon, but alas, now its gone.
Tomorrow I?ll open another wine. Cheers friends
It seems to be for sale in the US. http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1040902

  • Lisa S

Well, of course I have to comment when you taste a pinot! This is why I don’t buy many red burgundies.. the aging issue. I don’t have proper storage or patience to age them. Sigh.. Oh, by the way, it’s sold out at K&L and I doubt they would get more. Nice review, Anders.

I just returned from a Duckhorn wine tasting. Their Decoy merlot (second label) was surprisingly good for $22. Of course, the Duckhorn merlot is always good (more structure, tannins, oak, etc) at more than twice the price. I like their sauvignon blanc, too. Cheers!

  • patience is thew operate word for me, who actually waits 20 years to drink πŸ™‚ If i were 25 now I might think of that, but, heck I’m 50.

  • Saturdays wine was Barone Ricasoli Chianti Classico Castello di Brolio 2004.
It has as a dark blue and red, bright, beautiful color. Much darker then I?ve seen a Chianti have before. One hour in decanter and off we go.. The scent gives the first tobacco and black sweet cherry, hints of anise, and some bread spices like fennel and cumin. A little of funky stable and earth tones as well, almost like an Bordeaux.

The mouth feel is velvety, tight and fruity in a dry, well balanced style. Plum and dark cherry, combined with dark chocolate and herbs. A little vanilla tones as well. It is a fresh and appealing taste. Tannins small firm, like tiny sand grains. A nice pepper flavor, back end brings a slightly bitter tone of coffee grind , dark chocolate and soft black fruit. Long finish. A really good Chianti. Paired well with the herbal grilled burger , grilled potatoes and carrot with wine reduction sauce. The wine could easily last another 5 years in the cellar. Well, I have the 05, 06, 07 and 08 of this wine so next year I?ll drink the 05 πŸ™‚

  • Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday Dearrrrr Mott, Happy Birthday to you!

Hope you have a marvelous and fantastic day filled with a nice Tokay and some good food with friends and family.

    Cheers to Mott! πŸ˜‰

P.S. I hope I got the right day?

  • Second that. Any hints from Gary when the thing up his sleeve will emerge?

  • I have not heard anything. I’m trying to keep a “low profile” and not get too anxious. I’m just enjoying the camaraderie we have here and at DG and assuming this is what we will have along with videos from Scott and maybe you again? πŸ™‚

Hope all is well over there across the pond. Your financial institutions sound? I hear you can get some good Priorat pretty cheap or is that a rumor?

    Cheers

  • All is well and Sweden is not part of the Euro cooperation so we are in a fairly good place, but really depended on export so if demand goes down, so will we . But that is the situation for every western country. For now there is no banks on the ropes, goverment budget on plus, the national debt only 35% of the GDP and decreasing.

Regarding Priorat , well, I can get some really good ones for 15 dollars

Regarding videos I try to turn out one chocolate one every monday, but a wine one? , I have to think about that, maybe, but I don’t have winestore to take from like our favourite πŸ™‚

  • wltv

Thanks Dominus! I must say I’m impressed that you remembered.

  • There he is, glad to hear all is well.

I always remember those who gave me joy and was part of my life every night for six plus years. πŸ™‚

  • Well, after three weeks of heat/ice, PT, core exercises and stretching, I will hit the courts today to just “hit” a few balls. Nothing strenuous so I won’t push it too much.

I have really missed playing tennis yet I have to see how my body holds up. I’m coming to realize there are only two things in life that would put me in the pits of despair if I was told I could not do again: play tennis and enjoy wine.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

P.S. In my book, the Jermann pinot grigio is hands down my favorite pinot. http://www.amazon.com/Jermann-Pinot-Grigio-2010/dp/B005VX23G0

    Amazon???

  • Lisa S

Amazon. What the ? Even more interesting is that there is a link to K&L on the Amazon web page. I just ordered a bottle. πŸ™‚

I hope you had a good tennis day and that your back held up. If not, Advil might be your best friend. Sometimes it helps to take it BEFORE you play (or so I’ve been told).

Agree, if I had to give up wine and ….. hmmmm… coffee, I just might jump off the Golden Gate Bridge.

  • NWIndianaDan

    HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY MOTT! πŸ˜‰
Sorry I don’t get on here as often as I used to, but I do check in from time to time. I do second what Dominus and Anders had to ay about to friendship we have formed here. Thanks for everything. I hope you had a great day on your special day.

    Nostrovia!

  • NWIndianaDan

Anders, Fredrik Jacobson doing a great job at the US Open in San Francisco. Positioned to make a run tomorrow. I am glad to see Tiger going the wrong direction. πŸ˜‰

  • You and me both. If Tiger and LeBron are losing, Dom is a happy man.

  • Happy Father Day!

  • John__J

    HEY GUYS!!
So I’m sure by now you’ve all seen this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nnq1l4h1_As&feature=g-all-u

Different website and brevity notwithstanding, this is all but 1001 of WLTV.

  • John__J

and far from me to weigh in on my two cents when it comes to the wine picked with that food because I’ve never had that food (I dont want to ruin it and say what it is if you havent sen it).
So with out trying it I woulda thought something else if it was me to try. Perhaps, rose sparkling, or a demi-sec sparkling or an off dry riesling. I could be wrong but I wouldnt have thought that wine with the way the sauce and seasoning usually is in that meat.

  • Lisa S

Hi John J. Thanks for heads up on video. So I see it’s on Facebook.
Well, It’s been many yrs since I’ve eaten at Taco Bell, but agree with GV that a bold, meaty wine like a syrah would pair well with the spicy meat.

Hopefully he had an antacid on had, such as Tums, just in case. πŸ™‚

So last Saturday, June 16th, was the Annual San Francisco Pinot Days event. I was there, along with King JF and Castello. About 170 pinot producers and each had approx 2 to 4 wines available for tasting.. From my calculation, I (we) tasted over 70 wines in three hours. Yikes! The standouts for me included: Sojourn 2010, Black Kite 09-10, Goldeneye 2009… Too many other good ones to mention (although King JF might disagree). Fun times. They had plenty of spit cups/buckets, bottled water, and snacks to keep the crowds happy. πŸ™‚ Yes, I was happy.

Tonight’s wine: Hilliard Bruce 2009 “Sun” Pinot Noir from Santa Rita Hills, CA..This is awesome. Full-bodied and Sea Smoke wine-like. A cab-lover’s pinot, but at the same time is true to pinot noir, if that makes any sense. Very elegant wine. I probably should have saved this for a special occasion, but it’s been a busy, crazy week and I needed a treat. Cheers!

  • No better way (in my book) to treat yourself after a crazy week than enjoying a fabulous pinot. Sounds like you had an amazing time with the fellow Vayniacs.

I need to find some of the Hilliard Bruce right now.

    Cheers!

P.S. Back to the tennis courts this weekend. Just hope my back is up to the task. I wish Bar was in town so she could massage it as soon as I came off the court but alas, I’ll have to be satisfied with a bag of ice. ;(

  • johnfarrin

Holy crap! I just looked the Bruce up and it’s a $55 wine. On a Wednesday? Next you’ll be Paul Giamotti in a burger joint with his Cheval Blanc πŸ˜‰

  • Lisa S

Ha! Bar?? Good luck, my friend!

  • Lisa S

πŸ™‚ Poor Miles. What a great scene from Sideways. OMG.. you’re right, except… I can’t afford Cheval Blanc!

  • That reminds Me. I have a Cheval 88. Come over and taste it with me.

  • Lisa S

Totally worth the airfare to Sweden! πŸ™‚

  • Back from a trip to Denmark. Tok the time to try to find as many wineshops as possible. Did two good buys. A Deus ex machina CdP 07 for 90 dollars ( !!!!!) http://www.wine-searcher.com/find/deus+ex+machina/2007 and a Pichon Le baron 97 for 60 dollars. And some other good buys for 10-20% off the prices in Sweden. I’m happy and hopefully rested. All I need now is a bunch of friends to try some wine with πŸ™‚ Maybe I should get me good webcamera and link up to some sort of video chatroom?

  • Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermitage La Chapelle 1997. Nice dirt, stable, red and blackcurrant marmelade with white pepper and sour cherries on the nose. On the palate nice red sour fruit with sandy tannins and a heat from white and green pepper. Nice sweet redfruit and dirt on the back end. Long finish. The white pepper heat and tannins make me wonder if I opended this 1997 one to early πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

“Nice dirt”.. A comment that only a true wine lover would appreciate. πŸ™‚ So the heat and tannins still haven’t settled down? Wow.

  • NorwayWines

    Hi everyone, and happy summer!

My wife and I will be spending a few days in the Loire Valley in August, and we’ll be visiting a few vineyards. Do any of you have any specific “must visit” suggestions in Vouvray, Chinon, Saumur or other close-by area? I can’t wait for this trip! =)

  • If you are into wierd wines, Moulin Touchais in DouΓ©-La-Fontaine, lower part of Loire . Dessert wine of Chenin blanc, if they like you at the vineyard you’ll get a good price and treatment. They often have vintages from mid 50’s up to 2007 to sell. I think 2007 is the latest release πŸ™‚

  • Happy 4.th of july

  • Lisa S

Thanks, Anders! I popped open a bottle of 07 Flora Springs “Trilogy” cab/merlot blend from Napa. Good acidity, nice fruit.. restrained like a bordeaux. Love the sniffy sniff. Gary loved this wine on WLTV back in Nov 2010.
    Cheers!

  • Friday wine Cave de Tain La Triboulette Crozes Hermitage 2008
Very grape and region true on the nose with red berries, dried herbs , a bit of smoked sausage, but there is something more, dry clay. Shouldn?t it be granite?

Nice dark red color but seems a bit lighter then Crozes usually does. Medium bodied when hitting the tounge, you get cranberries, cherries and white pepper in a mix, mid palate with dry sandy tannins but no real pepper heat that usually follow the syrah from Nothern Rhone. Back end feels even lighter and brings just some red fruit and chalk. No heat from the 12,5 alcohol. The dryness might be an indication that it can be stored a couple of more years.

I?m disapointed of this Crozes… but it only costed 11 dollars i Kopenhagen in april so who I?m OK. Have a good weekend friends.

    SkΓ₯l.

  • Cass Jenis

Very entertaining! I love the design of your intro too- very mod.

  • NorwayWines

Definitely into weird wines. I’ll see if we can make it there! Thanks!

  • Hope summer is treating you all good. Weather being just bad, bad and bad here I hope you have it nicer. After a long friday I popped a bottel of Chateau Cantin 2009 (St Emillion)

Nice food wine nose with red berries, oak, forest floor, sage and a slight hint of sand. On the palate it is very dry up front with red berries, minute vanilla streaks and nice white pepper, tannins fine grains of saw dust and medium hot. Back end dry as a desert with cherry pits and medium dark chocolate powder balanced in a medium long finish. Just had a glass without food, a small mistake, but when i had a sip with some soft salty licorice this wine sang a lovely tune that hovered long time. With milk chocolate it turned out awful, with the red meat I quickly arranged it was delicious again. Talk about a rollercoaster ride. I think I’ve gotta try more wines with all sorts of different accessories, right Gary? πŸ™‚

  • Wish you still did this in some shape or form…maybe once a week?
