I just found your site and LOVE it. My friends and I have been trying to expand our very limited and uninformed palates. I think you will be a get source for us all.

QOTD: My next wine tasting will be next weekend at my monthly Movies and Wine night. Since I am a big dork, our theme is Vampires and Vino. Vampire flicks to watch and each person brings a bottle of red wine to taste. (Each month I have a different wine theme, either a region or a vintage or some such thing.) Heck, maybe we will plan to watch a few of your videos as part of our movie viewing! Entertaining and educational!

QOTD: Probably my apartment, although a wine bar (Left Coast Wine Bar) just opened down the street from where I work so I might have to try it out!

Gary, so glad you gave the 2004 Arnoux Cotes Du Ventoux a pass. I had it a month ago and it was one of the foulest wines I have had in a long time. I got a iron finish on it. Really disgusting. I was totally perplexed by the 89 point wine spectator score. QOTD: my house!

I’m always shopping for a good value, though it’s becoming harder to find a great “everyday” wine which can both bring something interesting to the table and fall under ten-bones. The last several successful values I’ve found have all been white wines. Do you think that white “values” are more predominant than reds? We tried a blind tasting with a mix of many different price-points and the “Pinebrook Cellars, Napa” California Pinot Grigio scored better than many of the higher-priced Pinot Gris and Grigios sampled alongside. Another reason blind-tastings are fun!

QOTD - My next wine-tasting is at the restaurant in which I work. We have wine tasting parties (a pot-luck dinner for staff in which we pick a different region, variety or wine theme) once a month! A great way to learn about wine and food pairings and sample a great variety of wines with friends.

Next wine tasting is today at Chateau Montelena, followed by Caymus, followed by Robert Biale (killer zins). Yes we are in Napa, bound for your neck of the woods and NYC on Saturday, more tasting there (or rather eating and drinking!!). Excited about that… going to Veritas, BLT Steak, Porter House etc. Come join us!

Finally delurking here, Gary! I can’t say where my next tasting is, I’ll tell you about the last one (last weekend). We live in Berkeley, CA, so it’s easy to get out there, and we were spending the weekend in Healdsburg (Russian River/Dry Creek area of Sonoma, for the non-locals). But we got a head start, spending the night in Petaluma, and heading up to Philo for some tasting. Stopped on the way at Siduri/Novy in their tasting room/warehouse in Santa Rosa. (Someone’s gotta tell their pourer to pour first, then talk!). After the drive north, we went just a couple of places–Esterlina (atop an unmarked dirt road, 1.9 miles off the highway) and Husch. The next day, down close to where we were staying, went to old favorites Porter Creek and Rochioli, and first time in the new tasting room at Moshin (with a really, really fabulous rosé, of all things!). Then Sunday, the best for last: J. They only taste in a food pairing, always a bubbly (sometimes 2), and 2-3 others. Pricey ($25/pop), but well worth it–here’s the deal, though: club members are free. 2 bottles , 5x/year, but we “save” $50 each time, and more if we bring friends, who are also free. Makes for an amazing first or last stop of the day! In fact, besides being last this time, they’ll probably be first next time, they’s just that damn good.

It’s sad that you were not able to find many under $7 wines that really shine, but count yourself lucky: up here in Canada you cannot even purchase wine under $7, let alone anything that isn’t swill.

GV you did something I do at all tastings I go to, which I find very useful: Retaste the first wine I liked at the end , after sometimes 20 or 25 wines to see if the taste and my palate has held true. I suggest the technique to all I meet.

Just went to one last week at Metro9 in Natick MA. It was a Foppiano vineyard tasting. One cool thing we were able to do was taste the Petite Sirah In like 10 different years. From 1986 to 2004. Pretty cool. The 1993 was the best.

QOTD - At my restaurant. We are switching our glass-pours to focus on Southwest France (to go with the cassoulet for the fall). Great stuff - Marcilliac, Cahors, Madiran, Gaillac. All crazy, wild wines. Should be fun. Love to see you giving it up to Beaujolais Cru. Totally misunderstood area.
